Perez And Mitrovic Both Start At Southampton

2:02 pm, Saturday, April 9th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 346 Comments

Southampton badgenufc emblem

Rafa Benitez has just announced the side for the game this afternoon at St. Mary’s against a good Southampton side, where we really need pick up something from this game – and hopefully a win – although that looks a tough ask.

Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic come back into the side and they replace Check Tiote and Papiss Cisse who both drop down to the bench.

There is no Fabricio Coloccini even on the bench today although Paul Dummett is in the 18 man squad but Vurnon Anita is again at left back where he had a torrid time last week.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Chancel Mbemba, Vurnon Anita; Jonjo Shelvey (c), Georginio Wijnaldum; Andros Townsend, Ayoze Perez, Moussa Sissoko; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Paul Dummett, Jamaal Lascelles, Cheick Tiote, Siem de Jong, Gabriel Obertan, Papiss Cisse

Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)

Coloccini has now been out seven weeks with that calf injury he picked up during the warm-down in southern Spain after the 2-1 win against Lillestrom – and as far as we know he’s fit and been training all week.

It looks like Gini will be in central midfield with Jonjo Shelvey and it’s Ayoze Perez who may be in the number 10 role.

Gabby Obertan is on the bench so maybe he’s showing some good form in training and when he’s in form he can set up the chances from the wing.

The defense must be stronger than we were last week when we conceded three poor goals including that killer in the 3rd minute of stoppage time that had Norwich gain a full 3 points on us.

Two of the players we signed in January are not even on the bench – Seydou Doumbia and Henri Saivet – so that doesn’t say too much about our January acquisitions.

This is what Rafa has said about having more options now than when he joined Newcastle four weeks ago:

“We have Mitrovic scoring goals and Ayoze Perez is doing well,” “The good thing is that we also have Papiss Cisse back and he was good the other day so we have the quality. But this gives me a problem because I have to decide who to play.”

“Before, Papiss was injured and I couldn’t choose him but now he’s another option and the competition for places in this area is good for the team.”

“When people ask why certain players are not playing it is a positive because at least I have this option. I’m very pleased with the way Ayoze, Mitrovic, Papiss, Emmanuel Riviere and Seydou Doumbia are competing for places at the moment.”

“I’m really pleased with Mitrovic every day, not just when he came off the bench. In training he is doing very well and giving it his all.”

“But it wouldn’t be fair to single him out because every is training well and I can guarantee that they are giving it their all. We are trying to improve every day to be ready for the next challenge against Southampton.

“The team has to improve mentally and approach the game with confidence and positivity. Hopefully if we do this against Southampton we can do well and get the result that we want.”

Only one in four fans think we can win this game today.

We must go all out for the win but we have to put in a good 95 minutes to be able to do that.

Taylor, Anita and Sissoko shouldn’t be starting imo

  • 3 AncientC // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:08 PM

According to nufc.co.uk it is a 4-2-3-1; although Twitter is showing that looks more like a 4-4-1-1.

I sincerely hope it is the latter.

  • 4 JAMSHA // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:10 PM

    Why Play Anita At LB?

  • 5 manxpie // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:10 PM

If dummet is fit enough to be on the bench surely he should be starting plus De Jong must be absolutely shit in training Wat has to happen for him to get a chance

  • 6 geordie157 // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:11 PM

think I would have chanced Lascelles at left back

and that midfield 4 doesn’t offer that much protection

  • 7 AncientC // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:14 PM

Lascelles is our tallest CB. Btw, Pelle is playing.

  • 8 Ron Knee // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:15 PM

What a great derby – for a neutral.

  • 9 TudorCrisps // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:15 PM

Lascelles should be playing there is a lot of height in there team and could cost us on set plays, still sticking a flag on mitro for hatrick 66/1

  • 10 SPRINGY // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:16 PM

lascelles must not be impressing in training unless taylor age and experience is more vital then height?

  • 11 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:16 PM

is this me or rafa s selections are too Damm similar to Steve mcclaren

  • 12 MadisonToon // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:17 PM

Taylor will give commitment which is what I think Rafa is picking him on. However, I predict an early yellow from him and Lascelles on hopefully before 60.

No matter, definitely looking forward to this.

  • 15 WWSBRD // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:21 PM

How Gini still gets on the pitch is beyond me I admit but I have faith in Rafa

  • 16 AncientC // Apr 9, 2016 at 2:21 PM

    Pelle – 6ft 3
Virgil van dijk – 6 ft 3 (Set piece threat)
    vs
    Mbema – 5ft 10.
    Taylor – 6ft 1.

Busy day ahead for the CBs.

We are going to need 3 goals to win this game.

i seen today that leicester keeper has averaged just 1.25 crosses a game for leicester, shows you how hard the team works to stop crosses and defensively head the ball away.

Southampton (4-2-3-1): Fraser Forster; Cuco Martina, Virgil van Dijk, Jose Fonte (c), Ryan Bertrand; Victor Wanyama, Jordy Clasie; Shane Long, Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic; Graziano Pelle

3 foot anita to get mauled at lb again, gini to pull his greatest ever ‘invisible man’ impersonation to date, sissoko to stroll around barely able to make a simple 2 yard pass and janmaat to get caught about 50 yards out of position etc etc etc

Jib, i’ve forgotten more about football than you will ever know you sad halfwit. Rafa got it wrong with mitro, as i clearly said pre game. The fact that he explained his choice doesnt make it a correct one. Thats why mitro is in today you silly little man. Go learn some tactics. moving on from the halfwit jib, i think we can get something today. Not sure i wud have chosen wiji who has done little in recent times besides the cross for the goal v makems. Come on rafa, 90 mins please.

We’ve had some terrible defenders at this club over the years. Janmatt over the last few games is up there with the worst of them, Boumsong, Rozenthal, Bramble. The dumbest player we have bar Sissoko.

Got worse under Rafa. He takes just a small bit of the blame though.

The derby was everything and the players knew it. Since then they’ve slung in the towel. Exact same attitude being shown as when we went down last time – they don’t care and are already plotting their moves away.

4231, give me a break. We were crying out for somebody to come in and play 433.

Janmaat probably faked it to get off. Many of these players are cowards. Top clubs will not buy this load of crap players, they can’t even pass a ball.

We have won something like 2 games all season playing this formation, and I include preseason in that.

Wake the hell up, 4231 does not work with this set of players.

jimiley – I respect your optimism and I tried to keep my hopes up that we could get out of this mess but now I have to accept that we’re doomed with this bunch of players. We didn’t get the boost of a new manager that most teams get, and Rafa must be wondering what he’s let himself in for here.

I hope you’re right and we beat the drop, but do you seriously think these players are suddenly going to start winning games after what you’ve seen in the past few weeks?

Pardew is bad but gets newcastle 5th place, a decent europa league run and consistantly manages to keep survival.ranieri comes in and takes leicester city all the way to probable title winners. Cappello comes in does awful with england, garde arrives at villa and fails to help them and Rafa arrives but can get a newcastle win.

Proves to all that a manager can be as great as morineo or as crap as league 1 managers it still won’t ensure a team will perform well because that is down to how much commitment will be provided by players themselves and right now we’ve got absolutely nothing.

its you who is the fool mate,

just because he is not in his fave position, dosnt mean he can not make runs, will we get the best out of him ? no, but can he offer more than that, YES!

Townsend, 2 goals, yes, great goals, but hasnt been a team player, goes missing for huge parts of games, strikers can do that and kind of get away with it, but not wingers, they have 2 main jobs, support the forward, which his main aim is always to cut in, ( selfishly ), and be cover for the fullback, which he rarely is.

and the 3rd player im very disappointed in is Gini, he looks like he is sulking out there.

Fair but I still really don’t think there was a lot Rafa could have done. But if I was manager and appointed before the leicester game I would literally just setup in a simple 442 and get them to do the basics right first, that might very well be what Rafa is trying to do but the players just cannot get it right and just don’t care.

Janmaat faked his injury and bailed out I reckon

  • 324 GeordieTwo // Apr 9, 2016 at 5:15 PM

That first half was from another planet. Saylor’s play was interesting. When did he join Southampton? I don’t think we’ll see him again this season. Janmaat got himself out of there right sharpish as well. Non-existent back four. Sissoko hopeless again. The only attack came through Townsend. They had 10 corners by the time we had 1. 11 chances to 1 in the first half. The numbers are overwhelming. They ran through us so easily time after time. Rafa must be cringing. Will we even win 1 with him in charge?

The lack of organization at the back is shocking. Saylor has never played worse I don’t think. Turned so easily by Long. Suicide back pass to Darlow. Strange clearances ending up in corners. The man was a complete write-off. Anita was horrible at LB. Completely lost there. Janmaat got himself sent off. An embarrassment to watch.

    SPRINGY

You’d think we could do a little less worse at home but …

The stench coming out of our dressing room is beyond belief. What has happened to Sissoko? Can’t cross a ball. Couldn’t get a shot anywhere near the net when their keeper was caught out of position. Failed miserably. The same with Wijnaldum. What a pair of internationals they are. Go home you two. Take some of the other idiots with you.

shitty thing is we play palace in a few games if things go as bad as they have been, pardew could be the one to put us down….then u’ll see smugness.

    g2
i’ve never been a fan of right footers on the left and vice versa, yes townsend scored today by cutting in and rattling one in but i believe playin this way restricts players like mitro, and stops the flow of the attack.

    Fuc**n shite
Benitez good manager – maybe – but what the fu*k did he play Taylor in front of Lascalles

I DO NOT WANT TO SEE TAYLOR AND JANMAAT play in a TOON shirt again – pathetic, shit, crap, clueless – bloody embarrassment

At least Townsend gives us a threat Springy mate. He has pace and he can shoot. How many of our players can you say that about? It’s still shocking to me how bad we are. What is Charnley doing still in charge? Any other club and he’d be long gone. He didn’t deserve to stay after that pathetic second half of last season. Now he’s been in charge while we wasted most of 80M and gotten us relegated.
