One of the many problems Newcastle have had this season is that some of our players don´t seem to be too bothered in tough fixtures and especially in away games when some of them don´t even turn up for the games.
The worst two offenders this season have been Moussa Sissoko and Gini Wijnaldum, who are both current International players for France and the Netherlands respectively, but they have been poor for Newcastle on the road this season.
And they will be the first two out of the door if we do get relegated this season.
Gini Wijnaldum – Benitez talks about his case
Rafa yesterday addressed the form of Gini Wijnaldum and takes Gini´s case to make the general point that until he gets 100% effort from every single player, Newcastle are not even at the starting gate.
With top teams that Rafa has managed in his impressive career – Valencia, Liverpool, Inter-Milan, Naples and Real Madrid to name some of them – it is a given the players will always give 100%.
This year Gini has not played well for us after a great start to the season in which he scored 9 goals and often looked our best player.
Benitez says he is pleased with Gini´s work-rate in training as he addressed the case of Wijnaldum:
“When you have players with international experience, players that can make the difference, you want to see them winning the games.”
“When you see him in training, you can see he has so much quality that he can be the difference and we will support him to do that.”
“What I want to see from every player is effort.”
“They have to try and they have to give everything and if they are doing that they are good enough.” “If they do that, and they have a little bit of luck, then you will see the quality they have.”
“There is that question of giving them confidence, but we are asking them to give everything on the pitch.” “The senior players they can help with experience. We have some players with quality too.”
“We will give them some ideas and put everything together and you can see a team that is capable of winning.”
“I have seen this team twice come back from losing against Sunderland and Norwich, and for me this is really positive.”
“You can see they are still really fighting.” “So for me that is the positive thing for the fans.but we are trying.”
Benitez is relying on players with experience to try to save Newcastle this season – and he has talked individually to most of the players to explain what he is trying to do over these final crucial games of what has been yet another disastrous season for Newcastle.
We really hope Rafa can do the job, but it´s looking very difficult at the moment.
Bu we must see 100% effort from every single player this afternoon at St, Mary´s – that has to be a given if we are to get anything at all out of this tough game.
