With our first win in eight games yesterday against Swansea, following a terrible run of getting just one point from seven games, it was not only a huge relief but also brought back a feel good factor on Tyneside.
Now we have to somehow set up a winning streak which can take us clear of both Norwich and Sunderland and every single game of the five remaining – three at home – are going to be so vital.
Rafa Benitez on the sidelines yesterday
Rafa has talked about the players gaining some confidence and belief, but he has said to do it Newcastle will also need some luck in order to survive:
“After the games you watch the table and it’s a little bit better so we have more confidence. Hopefully we can keep the momentum.”
“We said before playing at home could be massive for us, we have another three games at home so hopefully we can play at the same level with the same intensity and be lucky – as sometimes you have to be.”
“It was important to give them confidence before the game.” “The game plan, the ideas that we were practicing in training sessions this week you could see they were trying and trying.”
“Sometimes going well, sometimes not so well, but in the end we won and the team has this feeling that working hard and working together with the fans behind us we can beat anyone.”
“I think that they are now thinking that we can do it and they believe they have this feeling, like all the fans, watching the team working hard, everybody thinks we can do it.”
“I say a lot of times ‘we will fight until the end’, but now we are closer it will be easier for me to give this speech.”
The news on the injury front is that Daryl Janmaat may be able to play on Tuesday with a cast on his hand, and he wants to play.
But Vurnon Anita played well yesterday as he’s done before at right back and is likely to keep his place?
We lost six of the last seven games against Swansea with other one drawn so we broke that bad streak yesterday.
And we have lost 12 successive games against Manchester City in the league – so obviously it’s time for a win.
Our overall record against City is simply horrendous so time for a change – a big change – and we did take them apart last season 2-0 at the Etihad stadium in the League Cup and that was essentially a reserve side we fielded.
After all it was a cup game …….
We can win this game on Tuesday – we must win this game on Tuesday.
