Newcastle Draw 1-1 – Augero Goal Clearly Offside

11:00 pm, Tuesday, April 19th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 83 Comments

When you are second bottom of the league you don’t get many breaks at all and when Sergio Aguero put Manchester City ahead after 14 minutes from a free kick he was clearly almost two yards offside as the video replays showed.

However, Vurnon Anita came back with a very good goal after 31 minutes with a low shot with his left foot past Joe Hart and Newcastle will have finished this game thinking they could have won it – and we really needed all 3 points.

One point keeps us stuck in second bottom place – one point behind Sunderland and 2 points behind Norwich, but Sunderland now have a game in hand on us and a much better goal difference.

vurnon anita scores

Vurnon Anita’s brilliant goal with his left foot

It was another terrific game at St James’s Park tonight with Newcastle giving as much as they got from a good Manchester City side and the changes Rafa has made in the way the team plays and the attitudes of our players is now there for all to see.

We now look a good side and just hope there’s still time to get the wins we still need to survive in the Premier League.

In previous games this season Newcastle may have folded after the controversial first goal, but not this team and they fought back well and it was a really good goal from Vurnon Anita to level the scored and this lad is fast becoming one of the stars of the side.

In the second half both sides went for the winner – City to get further up the league from 3rd place and Newcastle to get further up the league table from 19th place – you wouldn’t have believed this was a game between sides at both ends of the table.

Rafa tried to change the game again and pushed for the winner in the second half and on came Aleksandar Mitrovic, Georginio Wijnaldum and Rolando Aarons, but we just couldn’t get that winning goal.

Wijnaldum was denied a goal near the end of the game by a good save from England goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The Newcastle players had truly given everything they had in this game and were almost on their knees at the end – and it was great to see the lads very warmly applauded by the crowd after an all-out effort – unfortunately we just didn’t have the luck to get all 3 points.

Not surprisingly, referee Friend and his assistants were booed off the field and basically you can make a case they cost Newcastle 2 points in this game.

The Premier League officiating just has to improve the video replays were shown around the world and it was so clearly offside it was embarrassing  to the Premier League.

Somebody needs to ask the linesman what he was doing when the free kick was taken since Aguero had been in an offside position long before the free kick came over.

But we have to move on and try to get all 3 points at Anfield on Saturday and our players must turn up for that game.

Unfortunately we haven’t won a league game at Anfield since 1994 – so time to break that poor streak – obviously.

Newcastle: Darlow; Anita, Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummett; Tiote, Colback; Townsend (Wijnaldum, 80), Sissoko, Perez (Aarons, 90); Cisse (Mitrovic, 55).
Subs not used: Woodman, Saivet, Shelvey, de Jong.

Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Mangala, Kolarov, Fernando, Delph (Sterling, 68), Navas (Bony, 84), Toure, De Bruyne, Aguero.
Subs not used: Caballero, Demichelis, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Iheanacho.

Goals: Aguero 14, Anita 31
Bookings: Anita 44, Perez 56, Kompany 66, Sissoko 90
Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)

Got to dust ourselves down again and fight again !

Recently watching Sunderland and Norwich give 100% but still not really getting any points was soul destroying now we are finally getting points through our performances it should hopefully make them nervous !

Need a favour from Arsenal on Sunday !! He hates Big Sam so hopefully they get a few early goals !

  • 2 Thump // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:05 PM

@shaun: (from last) “We should def take it to the last day”

Uh… you mean, we should be able to take it to the last day? Because I really, really don’t want to take it like that. Watching the Hull match while we were playing West Ham was fscking awful last season.

@Lee: I can imagine Arsenal trying to pass it into the box, and the Unwashed getting a point (again)

  • 3 SPRINGY // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:06 PM

would it be asking to much for coutinio, sturridge and defoe to all pull hammys tomorrow and sunday?lol

  • 4 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:09 PM

Well that is my worry because they should have been out of sight against Palace before the equalizer !

Sunderland are pretty dire at the back though so will leave a lot more gaps for hopefully Sanchez and Giroud to exploit !

  • 5 shaun83 // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Thump – I mean I think it’ll come down to the last day again. Really need it to be in our hands by that time though. I just can’t see us clawing so many points back off the mackems that we’ll be four points clear (goal diff an issue) by the last game. That would be the dream though!

  • 6 jordijohnty // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:11 PM

Still think were going down as we will run out of matches. However, Rafa’s first few games he continued with the same players as mclaren, gradually working out his best team and formations and prepared to mix it up, hence the improvements. mclaren/pardew/carver would just play the same “top” players ad infinite. shame weve got him too late

  • 7 jimmysmith // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:11 PM

Liverpool will be just as tough, because it’s away. It is a great fixture even ordinarily though. Liverpool consider it a big game and one with great history and often with plenty riding on them, this one in particular for us. Another point would be very good, and then we can go into the final three matches all out for wins.

  • 8 Thump // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:11 PM

Come to think of it, maybe a point could prove to be a good result for us. I mean, we could have won the game, and it was misfortune that largely dropped points — although we really need to cut out those daft free kicks, or at least get better at defending them.

What the team might have just realised is that we can take the game to the big boys… which might just give us the confidence to kick on at Liverpool. Again, I’ll be happy with a good performance against and a point (especially if the other two drop points), but I fully expect to go down so…

  • 9 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:12 PM

Excellent point which we would have all taken before the game but afterwards i can’t help feeling we should have beaten them. Through on goal twice with only the keeper to beat plus their goal was 2 miles offside.

On another day we would have grabbed a goal at the end.

On another day they would have grabbed a goal at the end.

    I’m happy.

  • 10 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:14 PM

I can see Rafas brain ticking over as the games have came and gone. Looks like he knows what he’s doing this lad haha

  • 11 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:14 PM

to get the goal difference down and the 6 points cut to 2 is a brilliant result and means we have a good chance again even if we lose against liverpool
as norwich have arsenal and man u next
    so should lose against both
sunderland have arsenal next plus stoke which ain’t easy

we are still in it anyways and i didn’t think that a week ago thats for sure

  • 12 Tsunki // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:15 PM

I noticed we tried a few creative set pieces today, which nearly came off a couple of times. There’s something funny going on in training. Rafa mustn’t have read the pamphlet McClaren left behind.

  • 13 Thump // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:15 PM

@Lee: Yep. I honestly wouldn’t put my money on it to be honest. It always seems like the big boys switch off against that lot down the road at this stage of the season, but hopefully you’re right about the space at the back.

@Shaun: Ah, I’m with you. I don’t see GD as too much of a problem, actually. Had we have won by one goal tonight, we’d have been out of the relegation zone. Still, this was our game in hand, and we’d have taken a point had we have played them last.

My heads all over the place. This is what Newcastle giving me a good show does!

  • 14 will die for the toon army // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:21 PM

we jst have to win our games thats all. Positive winning.

Its still puzzles me why Rafa benched Lasceles but that is in the passed we move on.

  • 15 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:24 PM

Buzzin. How good was Cheik tonight? Outstanding.

Another top performance from Lascelles. Anita, Dummett, Mbemba and Townsend were all very good. Shinsoko drives me mad with his poor touch, although not as much as Cisse. At least they both put in a shift.

  • 16 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:25 PM

tsunki, rafts using it as roach paper hahaa

  • 17 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:26 PM

    Rafa sorry

  • 18 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:27 PM

    Darlow good too.

Well done Rafa. Great showing. And correct call to drop Shelvey.

I knew before their goal that the lino was not fit for purpose. Stupid fat old fart. We’ve suffered from poor officials all season.

  • 19 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:29 PM

    Or a coaster, who knows

  • 20 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:30 PM

    Cracking atmosphere. Rafa Benitez…Rafa Benitez

  • 21 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:30 PM

That save from Darlow was goalie porn

  • 22 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:31 PM

It was such a gallant effort Old Blackas’ hands are sore with clapping.

  • 23 archaeomag // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:31 PM

We have to stay up – just so we can keep Rafa!

  • 24 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:33 PM

It still puzzles me why so many bloggers wanted Lascelles benched.

  • 25 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:34 PM

Rafa’s shown he’s got the plums

  • 26 shaun83 // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:34 PM

Thump – I just referenced the goal diff as it prob means we’d need to be 4 points clear of Sunderland for it not to come down to the last day. Unless we can thump (see what I did there) a couple of teams and same happen to them.

    Remaining fixtures

    Liverpool away
    Palace home
    Villa away
    Tottenham home

    Arsenal home
    Stoke away
    Chelsea home
    Everton home
    Watford away

    Arsenal away
    Man utd home
    Watford home
    Everton away

    As it stands

    Norwich 31pts -25 goal diff
    Sunderland 30pts – 18 (game in hand)
    Newcastle 29pts -26

Unfortunately with nothing to play for I can see the mackems picking up points against Everton Stoke and Watford. I don’t think Norwich will be the problem

  • 27 The overrated Frenchman // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:36 PM

Sissoko was good I thought. Townsend has surprised me, he’s been a worthwhile addition to the team. Couldn’t help thinking tonight though what a shocking waste of money the last two transfer windows have been. Only he and M’bemba in the starting eleven after spending £80mill.

  • 28 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:37 PM

tiote coming into form amazingly has changed every thing tbh
infact the most important thing at the minute especially seen as he looks so slow generally but then is on crack at the important times
so blaming mclaren for everything is very premature again

  • 29 Average_Contents // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:38 PM

    Lmfco at goalie porn.

What a fcuking result that was.

Need to do the same at Annfield at the weekend and hopefully we’ll come away with something.

  • 30 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:39 PM

    just got in from match
Tough when 12 play eleven- ref and assistants joke – got nowt from them just bookings.
Agadoo’s goal looked a mile offside from the Gallowgate – positioning of linesman f**in joke

MOM Tiote by a mile – absolute outstanding followed by Anita then Lasclles and Darlow.

Lascalles – future interntional – just got to cut out the silly mistakes

BUT I am angry got the players but why for F**ck sake have they not shown the same commitment for the season

  • 31 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:40 PM

If we play like we did tonight in our remaining fixtures they all become very winnable.

This is toon though eh, we’ll probably beat L’pool and Spuds and get ribcaged by Palace and Villa.

  • 32 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:41 PM

Throwing this out there but Liverpool away is a good game for us, they have Everton tomorrow and will play full strength team. Then they have Villareal away next Thursday, that’s the only route to CL for them a must win game. I can see a similar team to the one that played Bournemouth on Sunday against us

  • 33 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:42 PM

The way Rafa has recently got the lads organised and playing is commendable.

  • 34 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:42 PM

Ps Man City fans a joke – 300-400 there you’re having a laugh

  • 35 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:43 PM

AC, the harder stuff eh hhaha

  • 36 Average_Contents // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:44 PM

    Yeah tiote was immense.

Motm for me followed closely by big vern and lascelles (who I thought organised the defence and made the difference)

Mention for Townsend too. I was one of his biggest critics before and after we signed him but he’s been pretty good so far and proven me wrong.

    Long may it continue.

  • 37 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:45 PM

Charlie, when they scored it were silent. I know they’re up with the gods but you could see the tumbleweed roll past..

It’s just a pity that the officials are a bad joke

  • 41 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:47 PM

look at last week having a go at the starting lineup
and now this week a good feeling over it even tho there was only 1 change and then in hindsight saying well why didn’t mclaren play lascelles he did and gave away a penalty and got sent off
its very easy after the event at the end of the day the players havent been good enough this season thats it! the problem has obviously been leadership on the pitch and its taken a 22 year old prem rookie to expose that!

  • 42 Harley // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:49 PM

Just back from match. Heard from my mate and a lot on here that Aguero was offside. Also hear that it was a pen when he went down, so that evens it up.
Great performance and result, I had us down for a loss so I’m over the moon.

The big problem is Sunderland play Arsenal and Chelsea who are imploding. Stoke and Everton who have packed up for the season and then Watford on the last day who could be in the FA cup final.

We need 8 points from our last 4 games to survive. That’s a tall order.

  • 43 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:49 PM

Well let’s get a point at the weekend against Rafa’s adoring Kop and mark down Pardupe for a thumping shall we? Oh how I’d love to thrash Palace 5-0, the fans mocking him from the stands, him visibly shook – would be fantastic!

Then avenge our relegation at the hands of Villa.

  • 44 Harley // Apr 19, 2016 at 11:50 PM

Oh and the linesman tonight was the worst I’ve ever seen. It was embarrassing how much he got wrong.

It is the curse of the Toon. As soon as we get a top manager we lose him. Not as inspirational as Kevin but a better tactician. He would have won us something. You cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear in 10 games but he is trying. I think he will fail. Too many weak players who are responding too slowly to a top manager. Pulis is next. Happy days.

am i missing something jim?? has rafa resigned??

still upset with citys goal . i know its gone and we move on but its crap decisions like that from incompetant officials that could make or break a team , that has to be the worst decision in the premiership this season . You cant stand 2 yrds offside for 30 seconds score a goal and expect it to stand . no f”’ing way, what was he looking at ?? the mind boggles

  • 54 manxpie // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:10 AM

just watching the re-run who the fusk is the co-commentator? he didn’t even know perez was on the left then takes 5 replays to see aguero is offside for the goal and then says its a defo pen!!

  • 55 Toon Tang // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:11 AM

We need ManU to win later on tonight and Ars to lose on Thurs night. They will then be within a point of dropping out of champs league spots albeit for GD.

Ars will then need to beat Mackems more than ever.

    Piece of piss

  • 56 lochinvar // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:13 AM

Aquero knew he was offside because he turned rounded to look at the blindsman expecting to be flagged

Even from where we were yards away behind the free kick we could see he was offside

Will the FA demote that numpty to lower league games now – doubt it.

  • 57 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:13 AM

Just watching it again now. That is rank incompetence of the highest order. That lino should be sacked. He looked like a creaky, old fart even before the goal. We don’t half get the raw end of officials’ incompetence.

  • 58 Toon Tang // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:14 AM

  • 62 Geordiedownunder // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:21 AM

Can’t help thinking the PL fall into the hypocritical category.
It’s fine with them if a player commits a misdemeanor during a match, and on review is then punished. Now look at the atrocious act of incompetence by the linesman….
It could mean relegation and all that entails to a club, the fans and the City’s overall wellbeing for the foreseeable future….. And what happens to him?
There has to be something introduced to short circuit this, and Video is the obvious answer, but in the meantime, how about using goal line assistants? Nothing else is acceptable to fix this unfair system whereby the guilty escape.

Lasceles got booked at Everton but for me at that game he had shown that he was good enough to start. He was so composed until the red card. He organised the defence very well and he balances our defence with his height. them we keep losing and shipping goals we keep taylor on pitch, weird to Mcca and Rafa. But i said all is forgiven and for the first time Toonbrother was right abt Lasceles and Mbemba being the best partnership. big up man.

  • 71 Toonacious T // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:43 AM

I agree with other posters here. We need a minimum of 8 points from 12 to stay up and given our 22 year wait on a victory at Anfield and the visit of a rampant Spurs last game that is highly unlikely. Literally, we need both Norwich and the Mackems to implode and Sunderland in particular look capable of getting 7 points from 15 remaining available. Charnley should have got Rafa in after Stoke game. He must be fired at the end of the season.

  • 72 Blackley and Brownlie // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:43 AM

Andy Hinchcliff couldn’t see the offside and was blaming Darlow, saying Aguerro should’ve had a pen, Perez was offside .. what a biased tosser. It was never a pen. Aguerro was trying to cheat one.

  • 73 manxpie // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:44 AM

the fact the one offside result he gave us was that they were actually on says it all!!
that seriously is the worst offside i have seen in a long long time i just wish henry had the balls to say it instead of just laugh at it because it surely makes a much better sound bite!

  • 74 manxpie // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:46 AM

god why didnt wiji pass good save but an open goal for colback

  • 75 jimmysmith // Apr 20, 2016 at 12:58 AM

We need to play well in the run in and at least not be unlucky. I think we are now as well placed as the other two, and the best team of the three thanks to Rafa. We have a 1 in 3 or better chance of staying up now.

  • 76 asl123 // Apr 20, 2016 at 1:43 AM

An act of criminal from the linesman, its so obvious Aguero was there even before the ball kicked. Utter nonsense. Tiote back to him oldself. Perez was tireless and put nice football skills to watched for. Sissoko should be stuck right there commanding the midfield, he just need to be sharper. Coldback added stability and positioning very well. Cisse was poor, seems tired and often losing aerial battle. Townsend just average. Back four sometime making sloppy errors that would have cost us more than a point. Rafa decision to drop Shelvey and Wijnaldum on the bench is a brave call and it worked. It is either Shelvey, Wijnaldum or Sissoko. I am pleased Sissoko does not played on the left wing.

  • 77 Novocastrian66 // Apr 20, 2016 at 2:00 AM

I dreamt of a win. I hoped for a lucky draw. I never thought it would be them thanking a dodgy decision. Thing that got me was once again TV coverage focused on a non event penalty and not the offside.

  • 78 Bobbybee // Apr 20, 2016 at 2:09 AM

From where I sit in the NW corner it was impossible to see that Aguero was offside. The linesman, however, doesn’t have that defence. What annoys me most is that at no time in the build up was he onside. Took up an offside position and never budged. I find it impossible to believe he missed it. Had a good view of the so called penalty though and Aguero kicked our defender, not the other way round. Yes, I’ve seen them given – wrongly imo – but if you swing a boot and catch the defender, forcing you to go down, you only have yourself to blame. Don’t think he dived though, he just tripped himself up.
That apart, I thought we played well against a very good City side. You can see what effect Rafa is having now, with the organisation he’s brought into the team. Lascelles is going to be a giant at the back, teaming up well with Mbemba. He and Darlow now looking like excellent business from Forest. Let’s hope the bin dippers have an eye on the semi final and we can catch them cold. Just a warning to anybody thinking of taking up any seat described as ‘restricted view’ at Liverpool. It’s a lie. Restricted means no view in this case. Shouldn’t be allowed to give those tickets away, let alone sell them. It’s going to be very difficult from here, but with Rafa at the helm anything is possible. Crying shame he came in so late, but I’m not giving up until the maths say it can’t be done. Howay the lads, keep believing and fight till the end.

Very impressed & pleased with the performance
    last night,after a long while.Well organized,
compact and some swift movements from the players.I thought we were hopeless but after last night’s display,I’m very encouraged. Also very impressed with individual performance of Townsend,Anita and Tiote.Especially Tiote, what a game he had.Outstanding in central mf.And yes Rafa’s effects started to show now.Definetly agree with that. I hope it will not be too late.He deserves more time to show what he can do.I Wana apologize to him for slagging him off couple of times.I was wrong.
The linesmen were terrible last night. Not only on the Agueros offside goal but also in numerous other offside decisions and ball out of pitch decisions.Even Kevin Friend does not had a good game. That free kick should not have been awarded in the first place.Good one point at the end.Though Wijnaldum Should have passed the ball or could have scored late on.Very pleased again.I was written everything off few days or weeks ago.Now my hope is sky high.
One more thing I forgot, Darlow looked shaky in goal.Eventhough he made couple of good saves.
A bit worried on him because he looked nervous even without any pressure.Well done Rafa!!!

Also Pleased Townsend started to show how good he is and what he can do when fit. Some good crosses, esp one that should have been headed in to the net by Mitrovic, some quick movements, good work rate and good link ups.If we were playing with other team,he could have nicked a goal by shooting from out side the penalty area. When you see that impressive performance & recognize the missed oportunities by Sissoko and Wijnaldum,a point disappoints u.

    Looking at it

Norwich have a tough run. I can see them maybe getting 1 win from everton.

I think Sunderland are the worrying ones. They don’t have an easy run in either but they have fight.

Think we need 7 points minimum from the last four games.

You can see the rafa effect is now taking control. He’s organised us well and has us playing as one team. Ironically by shoring us up defensively we are creating better chances.

Proves that Steve wasn’t approaching it right.

I love how townsend is successfully managing to fulfil his defensive and attacking duties.

Nice change from the pardew school of defensive wing forwards and the Schteeve school of “don’t worry about defending mate”

    On a completely unrelated note.

Thinking about it, I have high hopes for mitro if he stays.
He scored 8 in 30 which as a first choice striker isn’t enough.
But, we forget he’s new to the league and only 21. That’s not a bad goal return.

    LGFUAD –

AND – he’s done that in a struggling team that creates very few chances.

Some of his goals have been outstanding efforts, not just a hit-and-hope screamer.
