Benitez Drops Wijnaldum – Cisse And Perez Start

6:47 pm, Tuesday, April 19th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 287 Comments

nufc emblemmanchester-city-crest

Rafa Benitez has just announced his team for the tough game against Manchester City at St. James’ Park tonight and Rafa has dropped Gini Wijnaldum after another poor game on Saturday against Swansea..

Teams:

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback; Andros Townsend, Ayoze Perez, Moussa Sissoko (c); Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey, Siem de Jong, Georginio Wijnaldum, Rolando Aarons, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Joe Hart; Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany (c), Eliaquim Mangala, Aleksandar Kolarov; Fernando, Fabian Delph; Jesus Navas, Yaya Toure, Kevin De Bruyne; Sergio Aguero
Substitutes: Willy Caballero, Martin Demichelis, Nicolas Otamendi, Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfried Bony

Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)

So Rafa doesn’t mess around – if you don’t produce the goods whoever you are – he will drop you as Wijnaldum has found out.

Perez comes into the starting line-up and he could play the number 10 roles behind Cisse which Sissoko could also play.

Mitrovic again starts the game on the bench but he makes a massive contribution when he comes on as a sub and that’s what Rafa will be hoping for but we need to see him on before the last 10 minutes.

And Henri Savet is back on the bench which is what Rafa said during the press conference yesterday.

If we are to avoid the drop then we need at least three more wins in our last five games – so the lads and Rafa will be going all out for the 3 points tonight.

Here’s what Rafa said about the opposition:

“When you talk about the top sides, they have enough good players to change if it’s necessary,” “I think Pellegrini was protecting some players, like Silva maybe, and I think that he will make some substitutions but they will still have a very good team.”

“The main thing for me is that we have to perform at the level that we performed the other day, and then we will have a chance.”

“If we believe, like we did from the first minute to the last minute against Swansea, we can beat anyone. Obviously City are a great team and it will be very difficult, but we have nothing to lose at the moment.”

“If we can do well, we will have more confidence, and if we get three points we will have even more belief.”

“They are really focused, and I think that they can handle the pressure. If you feel a bit of anxiety, what you have to do is run, fight, and give everything on the pitch,”

“I have seen their game against Chelsea and they did really well. “

“For us, when you play in the semi-final of the Champions League and you know what you can achieve, I think they will keep an eye on the Champions League and hopefully we can take advantage of that.”

Just less than one in three fans think we will this game tonight.

    Interesting selection…

Let’s see if it pays off.

Brave to drop Gini I would start Mitro myself. On way to match fingers crossed 🙂

  • 5 toon kk // Apr 19, 2016 at 6:56 PM

We’re playing a much stronger team than Swansea, so we’ll have to really raise our game or we’ll be embarrassed.

  • 6 AncientC // Apr 19, 2016 at 6:56 PM

Back to the 4-2-3-1 again, according to nufc.co.uk

Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Mangala, Kompany (C), Kolarov, Fernando, Delph, Toure, Navas, De Bruyne, Aguero

Subs | Caballero, Iheanacho, Bony, Fernandinho, Sterling, Otamendi, Demichelis

Perez and his slippery style, ghosting in against Mangala could be an interesting prospect.

i suppose w’ell just have to carry cisse untill he gets subbed . i hope rafa dosnt wait till the 80th minute like he did on saturday. My gut feeling is rafa will regret starting cisse .

  • 8 AncientC // Apr 19, 2016 at 6:59 PM

Cisse is bound to be due a goal. He has dry patches, but his overall goal stats are generally good.

  • 11 midweek weekend // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:00 PM

wish mitro was starting other than that im quite happy with it, regardless who we play upfront its going to be a tough game, hopefully we can still be in it at half time, cant see aguero or KDB playing the full 90, so wishful thinking but 0-0 at half time they come off and gives us a real chance, cause if we are wining at the break they will stay on until the jobs done,

im going for a very unrealistic 2-0 with townsend scoring first

  • 12 The next Mike Williamson // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:00 PM

    cities cost about 150m 🙁

  • 13 sing in the corner // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:01 PM

Ouch! Was hoping de Brunei and / or aguero would take be starting. Fix bayonets!

  • 14 sing in the corner // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:01 PM

*De bruyne… *Wouldn’t be starting. Ffs

  • 15 AncientC // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:02 PM

I would take 0-0 after 75 minutes, over us scoring and going into the lead in the first 10 minutes.

I am not sure there is enough confidence in the side to take an early lead against Man City, then expand on it and go for another.

  • 16 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Gini needs a good booting in the rear cavity so hopefully this will achieve it.

He’ll be walking home with 3 shoes on, 2 on his feet and 1 in his arse.

  • 17 LGFUAD21 // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Think he’s right to drop Gini

I think mitro should be starting.

Rafa clearly knows what he gets from cisse. Even if some can’t see it, it looks like he has a plan.

Anyone know whose wide. Perez or moussa.

If moussa is central then good. Otherwise Gini for perez is much the same. Both get lost in games.

  • 18 midweek weekend // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:04 PM

    @15

it’s an interesting one with citeh, scoring to early could actually be a bad thing, i think get to the 2nd half level and there most dangerous players will come off since they have to think about the champions league semi, which then gives us a great chance to take the lead in the last 15 and hold on for dear life, cant see it happening like that tonight but would be nice haha

  • 19 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:04 PM

What I like about Benitez is he is willing to drop players if they are not doing the business Perez has looked good in the last few games when he has come off the bench so probably deserves his chance

Would love it to give Wijnaldum the reality check he needs for him to get the finger out !

Still going to be a tough game tonight if we can get anything it will be a huge result !

  • 20 Dennis Twice // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:06 PM

    Attack Toon attack, attack!

  • 21 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:07 PM

What special skills does Cisse bring to the table? He hasn’t scored in about 1 1/2 seasons and gives possession over to the opposition too easily in the form of offsides.

Do they have offside bets at the online bookmakers?

  • 22 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:09 PM

Yes dennis! Get yourself in that changing room and give them players hell.

  • 23 TudorCrisps // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:11 PM

Like the bench by the way lads, hopefully 0-0 by the break then maybe snatch a late winner with some class subs.

any decent links without pop ups of big nobs on the screen?

  • 24 Toonacious T // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:13 PM

Happy enough with that selection given our options. I think Mitro is so slow he is better suited to coming on after defences have been stretched and tired a bit. Gini has been anonymous for several games running now so we can’t afford to have any passengers. We will be really on Sissoko and Townsend to run the channels and give the defence a break. Given the form of City, their points tally, their individual players and the fact we have suffered 12 consecutive defeats against them, it is pretty safe to say we need a massive slice of luck, our lads to play out of their skins, their lads to not be up for it, and Rafa to get the strategy and tactics spot on to even get a point. I can’t see us shutting out Aguero and De Bruyne tbh so we will need to score 3 to get anything I’m thinking but would love to be proved wrong. More than anything we need a big performance, the crowd lifted early and no major damage to our goal difference and team morale. I’m hoping and praying for a football miracle at SJP tonight but I’m definitely living in hope more than expectation.

  • 25 stuart no9 // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:14 PM

to be honest , i cant see where our goals are going to come from tonight,
On saturday we didnt look like scoring in the 2nd half untill cisse went off and mitro mugged a couple of swanseas players , can you see cisse doing that ?? not on your life, so im predicting we wont wont score untill mitro comes on ( half time i hope)

  • 39 mattyNUFC // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:32 PM

in the programme notes? that seems unnecessarily divisive, unless they were supposed to be made in jest

not criticizing jamaal, as i agree wholeheartedly with him, but rather the club. but i guess oversights are nothing new, big or small.

anyway, feel good about today. i’ll be dreaming of a win until we don’t

  • 40 Toon Tang // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:34 PM

TDS, I’ve not got any antivirus on this laptop of mine so I’ve given up on the streaming sites till I’ve sorted it. Every site I go on tries giving me full blown virtual aids.

  • 41 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 19, 2016 at 7:34 PM

Just seen that from Lascalles and to be honest watching Shelvey every week its kind of true….

If Lascalles keeps playing the way he did at Swansea and his abuse gets the others to start performing then keep it up big man!!

    We look decent but unsure.

Colback is ge main candidate. He’s just delaying with his decisions and bring pressure onto us.

Tiote looks good. He’s not ben bad at knocking it round either which is weird.

Dummet still isn’t a left back. He’s our best left back but not in the future. He’s too one footed. Is shows when he advances.

Cisse isn’t doing too bad but he needs to be getting into the box on attacks. He’s useless to us outside the box.

Dunno if that was necessary Anita. Mbemba was getting there first every time.

    Sure that wasn’t out either.

    Sub the linesman into retirement.

  • 129 LGFUAD21 // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:30 PM

Cisse is capable of some nice touches on the counter.

I think that may be why rafa picks him. He moves a bit more than mitro.

Oh. Linesman can spot it when we’re offside and the ball goes out but not for city.

    Who is this jerk?

    Good half.

Played against 12 men and drawing.

  • 137 Krul To Be Kind // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:32 PM

I’d change colback for Shelvey at half time and ayoze for gini on the hour and big motto shortly after… He will tear those city centre backs a new one, they do not like the ball in the air at all!

  • 139 toonincheek // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:33 PM

I reckon that lineman will be demoted after this game.
    Clear offside missed.
Not like things were happening quickly.
Aguero was STANDING offside when the freekick was taken.
And that ball where Sissoko was just starting a run – NEVER out.

  • 140 dok - the horrid colonial // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:33 PM

  • 141 colwell // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:34 PM

Cisse I mean what the fcuk our shitest player by a mile get him off offers nothing awful touch gives it back every time.

  • 142 LGFUAD21 // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:34 PM

Tiote has been a baws today.

    Not one foul.

Just as I was saying earlier. On form tiote should be one of the first on team sheet.

His passing has been much better today as well.

    I cant really fault anyone.

Du met needs to stay sharp as they are targeting him.
Colback needs to sharpen up too. He’s running the risk of a few misplaced passes and dilly dallying on the ball.

    Top marks
    Tiote
    Vurn
    Sissoko

All of whose I think have been class. Even with the chance squandered by moussa.

  • 143 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:36 PM

can refs be talked to at half time?
as surely we should show how bad a decision that was!

  • 144 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:36 PM

Mitro and Gini for Cisse and Perez around 60 to 65 if still level.

Against a tiring defence their combo of power and acceleration could be key to obliterating them.

Placing more responsibility on Sissoko seems to have had the opposite effect it had on Shelvey, definitely an improvement.

  • 145 LGFUAD21 // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:38 PM

    Toonincheek

That’s what bothers me the most.

It’s not as if aguero just ran a little to earlier and it got missed.

He was offside before the ball was kicked. You’dve thought the linesman would’ve seen it pre whistle and watched it.

I don’t agree with the Cisse bashing. He’s not been great but he is contributing to the build up. Just not looking like he’s gonna fill his primary role of scoring.

He’s made a fair few interceptions.

And I think if team mates were more in tune with him they’d see there’s been a few times he’s tried something quite smart to put players through but they haven’t been ready or expecting it.

  • 146 dok - the horrid colonial // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:39 PM

  • 147 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:39 PM

Hopefully that’s the end of janmaat. When Tiote is on form we look good. He offers so much protection.

  • 148 Sir Braveheart // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:40 PM

Just when you start to accept the inevitable…just when you’ve come to terms that were awful and we’re going down…this…

I don’t recall a first half as good as that all season. Can’t fault anyone (except the linesman) and there’s certainly room to kick on from here.

Damn you for giving me hope…

  • 149 LGFUAD21 // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:40 PM

    Manx

Refs will know the mistakes they made at half time.

Doesn’t change anything. It’s not like they can swing a game back by allowing us an offside goal.

This is why we need video refs. Would’ve sorted that issue in 10 seconds. So crucial when so much is at stake. Screw the old guard with their undermining refs bollocks. Even Howard Webb has agreed with technology.

  • 150 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:40 PM

Cisse’s started because he’s obviously more mobile and better capable of defending from the front. Looks a damn sight more lively than he has done in recent times, which can be said for a lot of them.

It’s working and there are copious options on the bench to make an impact.

  • 151 Average_Contents // Apr 19, 2016 at 8:41 PM

Tiote was unbelievable tonight, plenty of fight protected the back 4 very well!! Well happy with that point

  • 250 sparky55 // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:41 PM

Well done lads…even if we’d had rafa for just two more games we’d have definitely stayed up…but that point could be priceless if we take performances into the next 4 games

  • 251 sparky55 // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

like that into the next four games!

  • 252 MacToon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

Lascelles has grown the last few months, this years most improved player.

  • 253 Jail for Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

So nearly there with Wijnaldum at the end. Unfortunately very much in the mackems hands. If ever we need a result at Anfield and after that I think we could get one.

  • 254 toon kk // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

We actually looked like a premier league team, great point.
Shame the board stuck with Macca so long.

  • 255 jimiley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

    Three things stand out:
    Taylor must play
    Colo must play.
    Cisse must play.

  • 256 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:42 PM

Agree on the offside but they could have had a pen as well so that went our way. Overall we got more than I thought we would….excellent team performance

  • 257 midweek weekend // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:44 PM

great performance that, great watch, just a real shame there goal stood, they go on about the pen but hes so far offside its just sickening how has he not seen that!

we look good though, if we can take this form into liverpool and palace we could stay up yet keep the faith lads

  • 258 catchy in norway // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:44 PM

worst thing about the game, the commentators. wow, waxing lyricle about City. had to watch the goal 3 times before he admitted it was offside.

match officials totally robed us there.

Anita MOM, goal and good performance,, not one player out there under a 7 tonight..

    proud of them all

  • 259 jimiley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:45 PM

Sack Penfold and Carr now. I said on his appointment that Rafa could win us something but we will get relegated before he has the chance. We will get relegated. His appointment has come six games too late. Should have been the manager at Xmas instead of brolly man taking team for holidsy.

  • 260 Jail for Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:45 PM

    Sparky,
It is fcukin pi$$ boiling knowing that he could have been here before the Stoke game.

  • 261 AncientC // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:46 PM

Lascelles with the highest pass succession.

Tiote won the most aerial battles, by far…

Anita & Townsend made the most tackles.

Perez was the most dispossessed player.

  • 262 sparky55 // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:46 PM

9 more points should be enough looking at norwich’s and the makems remaining fixtures…I think we can do it

  • 263 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:46 PM

ourtoon have a look again all mbemba does is put his foot down and aguero leaves his leg behind dangling constantly
he orchestrated it its not a penalty

  • 264 toon kk // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:46 PM

I thought Tiote,Anita and Townsend had a very good game. Sissoko was a bit of a let down at times.

  • 265 benjohnsen // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:47 PM

Immense effort from the players today. Looks like they ran more this match than 10 games under McClaren. Irony would have it, but the last two matches we have had very little possession, but got 4 points. Just saying.

  • 266 Carr Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:48 PM

tiote was a beast tonight………..very much like Kante

  • 267 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:48 PM

    Manx

I love my team but I’m not blind enough to claim something that isn’t there. Look at the replay and you’ll see mbemba dives in with his leg which then leads to the trip. Aguero didn’t hang his leg out. It was clumsy but mbemba defended so well he deserved to get that go his way

  • 268 jimmysmith // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:48 PM

    The rafalution has begun. C’mon!!!!!!

  • 269 sparky55 // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:49 PM

Jail…yep…single biggest mistake the management made hanging onto Maclaren like that…he should been shoved before xmas but hanging on til March was fcuking ridiculous and shows without any doubt the management are clueless fcuking inbreds

  • 270 WWSBRD // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:49 PM

Great performance, robbed by the linesman but that team will stay in the league

That defense shouldnt work but it was great, Townsend, Tiote, Sissoko and Colback were cracking

    Optimistic is what I am

  • 271 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:49 PM

Think it wall all hinge on the final day and we really need Spurs to be playing for nothing. Won’t be able to live with us and won’t want to with the Euros on the horizon, should we play like that.

  • 272 Bambams // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:50 PM

    Sparky

I hope you are right mate.

Thought Lascelles continued to look very good….Tiote did great bar a couple of fouls…Mbemba was great… Townsend put a great 80 mins in but Anita was excellent.

Whether we stay up or not we have improved under Rafa.

It would of been a hammering under SMC

We have again given ourselves a chance

  • 273 WWSBRD // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:51 PM

Even Anita was great and he is barely a footballer! Rafa is magician

  • 274 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:51 PM

ourtoon i have and i can’t believe you are saying it tbh
    was vardy tripped then?

  • 275 Jail for Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:52 PM

    Jmiley,
I think he should have went after the four games in a row in Dec/Jan but could see the sick sense of those in charge thinking throwing 30M at him would sabe the day. Not sacking him after Chelsea was gross negligence.

  • 276 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:53 PM

Sissoko is one that’s had a lot of stick, he was clearly suffering with cramp in that second half but he kept battling away. Well done for finally showing some passion and fight

  • 277 Carr Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:53 PM

if only we had Rafa in February…………

  • 278 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:55 PM

    Manx

Vardy throws his leg out mate and takes a dive. A blatant dive by vardy, it was nowhere near the same as aguero…..for starters aguero wasn’t running onto the ball. Maybe you need to make a real comparison mate haha!!

  • 279 manxpie // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:55 PM

i think people are forgetting about certain injuries!

  • 280 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:55 PM

Sissoko is clearly liked by managers because he does make things happen, just needs to convert more of those nearly moments into something productive.

Ran with the electricity of his debut at times, which showed in his cramping at the end.

  • 281 Tsunki // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:56 PM

Big performance from the back four especially Anita, Tiote imo is the big difference in front of our defence, glad Rafa resisted the urge to change him for shelvey. Sissoko immensely frustrating, blew hot and cold but better usual. Wijnaldum should have passed to mitrovic standing clear on the spot. Perez ran himself ragged, he’s not brilliant but he doesn’t half cover ground.

  • 282 davetoon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:56 PM

Can only hope we are still alive on final day as our recent record against Spurs is good unlike Citeh. That was our first point in many years.

  • 283 Our Toon // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:57 PM

It was clumsy, the ref gave them a lot tonight so surprised he didn’t give that

  • 284 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 19, 2016 at 9:58 PM

    Our Toon

Mbemba did nothing wrong. Aguero initiated the contact and should have been booked the cheating little git. Mbemba merely stood his ground.

  • 285 sparky55 // Apr 19, 2016 at 10:00 PM

i just hope spurs cant win the league by the time they come here cos if we need to win to stay up and spurs need to win to win the league then the quality spurs have will too much for us…we need a deflated and beaten spurs on the last day of the season

  • 286 TudorCrisps // Apr 19, 2016 at 10:06 PM

if only when mclaren said judge us after 10 games we judged and said piss off, had raffa for longer we would not be close to the position where in, but with the bottle we showed today i think we could win a world war, more of the same a see 3 poits v the bin dipers and palace and villa

  • 287 TudorCrisps // Apr 19, 2016 at 10:09 PM

sparkky if by that time sprs cant win the league am sure ashley can influence the game with his bottemless pockets afterall the two owners are arse buddies
