Newcastle were said to be keen to try to get 26 year-old Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs in January, but as it turns out we were not successful in boosting the defense at all in the last transfer window.
But there is news coming out of London that Newcastle will make a move in the summer for the 10 times capped England International full-back, if we can avoid the drop under Rafa Benitez.
The news is an exclusive from Football Insider, but it was probably a decent guess we would go after the full-back if the news in January that we were interested was indeed true.
Kieran Gibbs – Arsenal and England left-back
Kieran is a vastly experienced player and he has played over 200 times for the Arsenal first team and he finds it difficult to get a first team starting place these days.
Spanish International Nacho Monreal has occupied that position at Arsenal this season.
Kieran is English and would be able to produce the goods immediately at Newcastle and we wouldn´t have to wait for any settling-in period that we have in the past, when we bring in players from the continent.
Arsenal are said to be willing to listen to offers for Gibbs this summer and the likelihood is he will leave the club he joined as a 14 year-old from the Wimbledon Youth Academy in 2004.
Gibbs is rated at around £12M and Newcastle must strengthen their defense this summer if we do stay up.
Left back has been a problem position for Newcastle this season and we would expect at least a left back and center-back to be drafted in during the summer.
Since Gibbs was a target before Rafa Benitez arrived it would depend on whether Rafa wants Gibbs during the summer, since the new manager will now control all transfers at the club and not Chief Scout Graham Carr.
And of course this is all dependent on Newcastle staying in the Premier League.
We still have to win our last three games starting at home against Crystal Palace tomorrow.
That´s the only thing that really matters at the moment.

A couple of thumping results’d go down very well thank you.
We’ve got to and will go for broke but I can’t see Rafa leaving our defence exposed.

Comment #3bit of a non-story this…but with his injury history why would we want gibbs?…we have enough crocks without adding and paying for another one….not for me.
