Wijnaldum Starts For Newcastle Against Palace

2:01 pm, Saturday, April 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 275 Comments

nufc emblemCrystal Palace .svg

Rafa Benitez has just announced his Newcastle side for the important home game against Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace this afternoon and as we had expected in comes Gini Wijnaldum for Ayoze Perez as the one change to the team that did so well in fighting back last week against Liverpool.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback; Andros Townsend, Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko (c); Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Kevin Mbabu, Steven Taylor, Jonjo Shelvey, Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Crystal Palace (4-2-3-1): Wayne Hennessey; Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney, Pape Souare; Mile Jedinak (c), James McArthur; Jason Puncheon, Yohan Cabaye, Yannick Bolasie; Connor Wickham
Substitutes: Alex McCarthy, Adrian Mariappa, Martin Kelly, Joe Ledley, Bakary Sako, Dwight Gayle, Emmanuel Adebayor

Referee: Mike Dean (The Wirral)

Gini will now have this game to prove to Newcastle fans just how good he is as an attacking force and hopefully he can add to his 9 goals this season – all scored at home.

It’s not rocket science but we thought Gini would come in for Perez this week.

It also looks like Gini will be playing in the number 10 role with Moussa moving to the wing – but of course they can interchange too.

Wilfried Zaha is out injured and former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye returns to Newcastle for the first time since he left for PSG over two years ago.

This is a game we can win today and it’s a complete sellout – and that’s terrific – and one good way to keep Rafa at Newcastle next season – whatever happens.

This is what the manager has said about today’s game:

“Obviously we have to win.” “Crystal Palace will try their best but at this stage of the season everyone wants to win and knows how important it is.”

“The last few games we have seen the team spirit and the character – that is why everyone has more confidence.”

“Hopefully we can score the first goal and get the fans behind the team. Hopefully we will see that until the end of the season and into next season in the Premier League.”

“Everybody knows what it means to be in a final,” “It’s so hard to get into a final and once you’re there obviously you have to be careful.”

“Their players will be thinking about the final, in the back of their minds they will not want to pick up any injuries but also want to prove themselves.”

“But we have to think about our own situation and try to win. We’ll have the fans behind us and we have to give everything.”

“They were doing really well earlier in the season so we know that they have a good team that are well organised and play good counter attacking football.”

“Now they are more or less safe. You have to do the maths but, for me, they are safe.”

“When you prepare for the game you look for weaknesses in the opposition and unfortunately there aren’t too many.”

The main thing now is concentrating on our team so that we can win.”

A whopping 85% think we will win this game this afternoon.

Just knew Ed would have moved on as I wrote

    Repost
Someone mentioned Jimmy (Jinky) Smith yesterday a great player for us and I was privileged to watch him regularly back in the day.

However he also could be infuriating ( an adjective that often goes with comfortably with talented) and wasn’t always trusted by then Manager Joe Harvey because of his waywardness and Bob Moncur ( yes that one) would often be shouting at him.

A memorable game for me was V Wolves ( early 70’s?) and Jinky had already nutmegged Mike Bailey ( an old fashioned bruiser of a midfielder and Captain) twice and it was clear that he was chasing back after Jinky and giving him some advice about not trying it again.

Cue Jinky looking for an opportunity throughout rest of game and it finally came Jinky completed his hat-trick of nutmegs , took a blow to the face and Bailey was walking before Ref could get out red card.

Great fun at time and we won but he was I believe distracted from the game by his personal challenge and it probably wasn’t professional 🙂

Still one of my favourites and a joy to watch.

Happy enough with that, Perez hasnt really done much playing wide left. Hopefully thr dropping has kicked some life into Wini, he played his best for us out there.

Would still like Mitro in for Cisse.

Hope Tiote and Colback dont get carried away trying to kick Cabaye when the fans start booing him, cheap yellow card or worse.

Just got to hope this has given Wijnaldum the kick up the backside he needed !

Would like to see every time Townsend has the ball that Wijnaldum is sneaking into the box behind the full back trying to get on the end of crosses

Team to play Sunderland: Haugaard, Bardsley, Cameron, Shawcross, Pieters, Whelan, Imbula, Shaqiri, Adam, Arnautovic, Crouch.

Subs: Muniesa, Joselu, Diouf, Walters, Wollscheid, Krkic, Bachmann

At least Stoke have some players back from injury come on Hughes get the victory!!

    MAUTITOON from previous.
The difference between me and alot of others is I say it how it is, it’s called being realistic. I know what we’re capable of, we’ve been the same for a long time.
We’re playing with flaws in our squad, no proven striker for a start, hence the lack of goals from them.
I’ll always give credit when it’s due though.
We can only live in hope though.

As you rightly say, Jinky was a joy to watch but only when he was on his game.

A highly talented player but sooooo infuriating when he would try to be clever once too often.

I remember one game when the lads turned out in our then Brazil-like away strip – it must’ve been a testimonial or the like at SJP – and they really played to the gallery. It was almost like an exhibition match.

But, back to Jinky… there was talk of Joe Harvey making him lap the pitch a few times, presumably to sweat out the beer and Jinky, who had a couple of cans tucked away somewhere would have a slug when he knew Joe wasn’t there to see him!

Such a character and in my view, he was worth every penny of the £100k they paid Aberdeen to get him.

And let’s not forget Tony Green who came in fir £140k from Blackpool – same gait as Dalglish when he was on the ball and such a pity his Toon career was cut short by injury. He came in within days of SuoerMac, another where £180k was money well spent.

Ahhh but back to today, it really shows how short we are of defensive talent when Saylor’s on the bench.

Anyway, Lawro fancies us at 2-0, but I’m going for 4-2……. Everything’s crossed.

at times we tend to ignore the realism i think just because of the love and passion for our club.we’ve been through a lot but i myself had already given up on this club after the everton loss but from somewhere there seem to be a glimmer hope that has managed to crop up, but i hope we give it our all and if we have to go down,we go down as warriors.

fortunately we are playing other teams in next 2 matches with flaws in their squads so with a better quality manager than they, who is gradually improving us there is room for some optimism.

Trouble is it is a harder fall from optimism than from realism /pessimism if it does go pear shaped 🙁

We were blessed in those days but often took some hidings the embarassing turn out at FA cup final v Liverpool in 74 still haunts me after thinking we would excel on a big stage 🙁

Talking of which – in suggesting players the other night, who had gone on to better things I left out Supermac as I wasn’t sure whether he would qualify in that criteria or not given his career curtailing injury? Another favorite player who now irritates ( punditry) along with Beardo and Moncur.

  • 33 Mister Tuff // Apr 30, 2016 at 2:42 PM

Seems to be a bit of leeway afforded to Jinky Jimmy. (in comparison to HBA) Probably saw most of his games. Skilful -natural footballer and as stated his party trick of nutmegging apponents – no flukes as he constantly did it.
Beer, dames and gambling was his downfall.
Used to work in the Toon and would regularly see him coming out of betting shops,
Also exitting pubs – probably not after having a swifty – but staggering all over the place – not once or twice but regularly.
    A talent wasted.

I’ve supported and watched us play for many years, like every fan. But what is evident is our unpredictable performances, meaning occasionally we are excellent. But as soon as this season was a couple of games in I could see what we’re were all about, quality was missing and there’s a contagious lazy attitude which Rafa is struggling but just started to sort out.
Just hope it’s not too late.

What worries me is that we should dominate the game
but we haven’t had much success at finding the net

Palace on the defe3nsive, 10 players back, could be

Benitez done a lot right since he has been here…….but playing Cisse on his own up front is killing us. Same as first half last week, cant get hold of the ball, no focal point in attack, his touch is soooo bad.

1 up front needs to be Mitrovic, Cisse needs Mitro next to him or someone Bellamy-esqu to run the channels and strecth the defence to make space for him in the box.

Benitez is clearly a top guy, how can he not watch the ball bouncing of Cisse everytime????

  • 100 Jib // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:52 PM

Rafa’s brains trust are looking very thoughtful.
I wonder what they’ll come up with 2nd half

  • 101 SPRINGY // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:53 PM

The balance is not right for us this is why Sissoko cant play in the centre every week he goes missing the space for him would be on the right wing

Rafa will ring the changes at half time we need more movement into the box as its going to be the only way to break them down

Just had the Stoke game on in the background and they have had lots of chances against Sunderland they should be in front

  • 103 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Expecting Cisse to kick-on after his goal, but looks like he’s gone backwards. Not as lively and as ever his touch is abysmal.

Mitro on for him I think, but he needs to show more energy than his last few sub appearances.

    Lacking urgency overall.

Lascelles easily our best player so far. Faultless and a natural defender.

Need more from Sissoko and Gini, Townsend trying too hard and hesitating with crosses and shots for some reason.

  • 104 colwell // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Fcuking useless cnuts this is exactly why we’ll go down. All the players know we need the 3 points yet aren’t put no where near enough pressure on Palace.

Pull that useless tw@t Cisse off, fcuked up every time today at least Mitro gives us a target. Tell Wini he can play if he wants and stop hiding, fcuk it really doesn’t matter we are down anyway.

  • 105 Toon XI // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Poor first half. If our play does not improve Palace will win this one.

    Townsend looks shocking to me.

Colback is inept in front of net.

Cisse and Sissoko are worthless today.

Typical Toon. No show against clubs in bottom half of table.

  • 106 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:57 PM

    JDubai

It’s about shape. Mitro often switches off and allows defenders to bring the ball out with ease. Though Cisse has definitely gone backwards in that respect today after looking very sprightly recently, also Mitro’s hold-up play is very hit and miss. Can be formidable at times, but also just as ineffective as Cisse is 100% of the time in that regard.

  • 107 Jib // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:57 PM

Watching the replay of Cabaye’s shot from the right – Darlow did really well getting his right hand up to it – Elliot or Krull would have conceded

    Very poor so far.

Need significant improvement if we are to win.

  • 111 Nufc-83 // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:59 PM

Cisse can’t play on his own if Rafa wants him on then he needs someone alongside him as he’s useless at hold up play.

People slating Townsend he is not having the best game but at least he’s having a game!!! The point being he wants the ball he’s trying to get space for the shit while players like Gini and sissokho don’t want the ball they are hiding not making any runs and making it impossible for players to give them the ball their cowards and should be booed of the pitch!!

  • 112 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 30, 2016 at 3:59 PM

We need someone on the left wing everything is coming down our right hand side as Wijnaldum has went missing

Aarons would have added pace but hes not even on the bench so it will have to be Perez again I guess

  • 113 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 30, 2016 at 4:00 PM

No-one could have offered less than Cisse has done today. And the first half last week. 1 header after a keeper error doesnt equal things out.

Must MUST have Mitro on at ht. Id also switch Townsend to the left, Sissoko to the right and play Wini in the hole.

  • 115 SPRINGY // Apr 30, 2016 at 4:02 PM

move townsend left sissoko right dejong thru the middle, townsend not having much luck on the right today and gini…as u say missing.

  • 116 davis_toons // Apr 30, 2016 at 4:02 PM

    Players should stop giving interviews.

Townsend what wrong with him now? He have created good runs and changes are there for him to shoot but he is not just didnt.

Just let it fly. And that gives his mates more confidence to attack.

  • 117 Mister Tuff // Apr 30, 2016 at 4:04 PM

Lascelles – why wasn’t he given a debut earlier.
Cisse – as expected done nowt – should have sold him 2 seasons ago.
We know Mitro will be coming on – but mediocre bench accepted has Rafa seen any chinks in tactics and will he act.
Shelvey has been a thorough disappointment I think he might bring him on.
Their defence are having a walk in the park at the minute.
    Q. Has Rafa seen anything he can exploit -has he the cojones to change things/early. Mega mega mega decision time.

  • 122 Average_Contents // Apr 30, 2016 at 4:06 PM

Well it looks like that hope of the palace players not wanting it is a hope too far.

Look dangerous on the break and likely to score every time.

We look disjointed and shaky at the back.

Wish we’d of got the early goal to settle it down but all we can hope for is a better showing in the second half and a couple of goals.

Townsend and cisse need to sort their shit out. So frustrating to say the least.

It looks like every time Rafa has a talk with the players they do better things.

jesus mate when you sent that i thought scum had been given a second penalty in the same game had my head in hands for 5 mins

  • 239 Oleg G // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:00 PM

And they’ve lost the game in on the 90th minute?!
    Shocking.

  • 240 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:01 PM

    classic scumbag dive from defoe

  • 241 Nufc-83 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Gave coldback a lot of stick prior to the match but thought he was excellent today along with our future captain lascelles

  • 242 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Need Arsenal to turn up against Norwich now and give them a demoralising whooping.

  • 243 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:02 PM

    one fine day
Sorrry!! insane crazy finish, hard to get keep together and get it down in writing@! HUGE WIN FOR US. I dont see scum winning another game. 3 more for them and 3 more for us should do it.

If wenger doesnt win today, he has to go.

  • 244 Oleg G // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:03 PM

Arsenal must show they have at least some balls after the horrible game against Sunderland last week.

Chelsea need also to do their job next week.

And Everton and Watford won, which is good.

  • 245 shaun83 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Typical Sunderland nicking a point, could prove vital that. Great result for us, scrappy and nervy but it was always about 3 points.

  • 246 one fine day // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:04 PM

    TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa
made it an interesting few mins lol
right arsenal get your fingers out

  • 247 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Anita brilliant today. Townsend motm. Excellent display. Great escape is on. But still out of our hand. We need to beat villa.

  • 248 davis_toons // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:04 PM

“Perez so slow on fresh legs”

If Perez was slow how do anyone describe Shelvey? Coming on at last 5mins.

  • 249 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:05 PM

Not of primary importance, but Townsend has to be coming back into the Euros picture and with Roy a big fan, can see him making it.

  • 250 Rotonda heights // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:05 PM

these refs make me sick. 90th minute dive from Defoe and they buy it every time. beautiful day up till then.

  • 251 Bambams // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:05 PM

    COME ON…..

    NEVER A PENALTY!

I haven’t seen it yet but will put my neck out here…bet Defoe pen was never a pen !

Dean always does this to us !

  • 252 toon kk // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:05 PM

Phew 3 great points. The last five minutes were on a knife edge

  • 253 Hail Wor Ashley // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:06 PM

    Davis

Aye, but some think Perez a quick player when he really isn’t. Everyone accepts Shelvey is a slouch.

  • 254 Bambams // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:07 PM

    Lascelles was immense today

  • 255 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:07 PM

We should’ve made it 2 at the end there. We have a chance, but we need Sunderland to lose against Chelsea and us to win the next 2 matches.

  • 256 toonking // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:08 PM

another 3 points for us meaning we are out of the bottom 3 and whilst the scums penalty might feel annoying I’d rather have them scoring it and palace missing than palace scoring and scums missing.

I don’t yet see survival being totally in our hands but that should change next week because I expect us to get victory against villa and scums to get defeat against chelsea meaning We’ll go 4 points ahead of the scums and will go into survial sunday knowing a home victory against spurs ensures survival even if sunderland do win at watford.

  • 257 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:08 PM

Wijnaldum was awful again today. I actually think Colback did ok today. Probably his best game for us. Man of the match was Townsend and Darlow. If Norwich lose today, we’ll have a great chance.

  • 258 davis_toons // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:09 PM

    Extra Time
Mike Dean 1st give half 3 mins and the 2nd half 5 min.

Mike Dean trying his best to sabotage us.

Apart from his blunder interception to give us the ball breaking down CP attack.

  • 259 benjohnsen // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:11 PM

What a nerve wrecking win, but a great one. I have to say Darlow and Lascalles can become some very decent players for us.

Anybody else noticed how slow Shelvey and Perez are, with fresh legs? No wonder we have been losing games. When Shelvey runs it looks like he is not even trying.

  • 260 shaun83 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:12 PM

Got a feeling Sunderland will get 4 points from the next 3, meaning we’d need something against Spurs, gutted they nicked a point.

  • 261 toonbrother // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:12 PM

i have a sinking feeling we are going to make it to 39 points and still get relegated

Sunderland have found form as well

How I wish we dropped colo for lascelles earlier in the season we’d be on 40 points by now

  • 262 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:12 PM

If Craig Bellamy came on in his prime, we would’ve made it 2 nil at the end.

  • 263 bettyswallocks // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:13 PM

Geeetttt innnnn. That was pure stress. Fkn Jammy Mackems.

  • 264 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:14 PM

    @Kets

Not as quick or experienced but Armstrong would have been perfect to bring on when sitting on a lead !

  • 265 one fine day // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:14 PM

Horrible last 15 to sit through
Only this club can do this to you.
    Anyway great result

Enjoy the night boys and girls
    SH@T ON THE VILLLLLAAAA

  • 266 lukes26 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:14 PM

even though sunderland got a point, newcastle in a much better position after todays game

  • 267 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:16 PM

I can see Sunderland getting between 5-7 points, so we need to win our last 2 games, which we can.

  • 268 davis_toons // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:17 PM

At 24, Cheick Tiote coming to Newcastle after playing a few games got himself a long term contract and glue himself to starting 11.

Even til now, the team needed his interception. when bolasie was running strong into the box CT come to our rescue to intercept his strong run giving Colback a chance to clear away..

Give CT a 1 year extension. We need him badly. Until we get a real replacement.

  • 269 Ketsbaia9 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:17 PM

Norwich will probably win the next 4 games.

  • 270 ilovetoon8788 // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:17 PM

We need 6 points for survival. I expect Sunderland to get a shock win at Chelsea and draw 1 and lose 1.

  • 271 Douglas // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:18 PM

When was the last time an NUFC keeper saved a pelanty? Sorry, I’ve been listening to Waddle to much

  • 272 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:18 PM

To be honest I had both games on a stream and Stoke pounded Sunderland I cant believe they got a point !

Chelsea will destroy them playing like that and I think Everton are better away so they could end up beating them as well which meant if we beat Villa Sunderland would be down before the last game

  • 273 JamesToon // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:18 PM

Townsend, Darlow and Lascelles our 3 best players today.
Fantastic result, onto villa and we cannot get complacent for it, as they are starting to play well without any pressure

  • 274 Veltman // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:20 PM

Over the moon with the win & out of the hole.
What a stunning screamer from Townsend. .
    Howay Darlow!

  • 275 Ron Knee // Apr 30, 2016 at 5:21 PM

    Andros Townsend:
“Palace set up to relegate us, from minute one they were time wasting. Sunderland dropped points which is another bonus for us. We live to fight another day and now we prepare for Villa.”
