Wijnaldum Starts For Newcastle Against Palace

nufc emblemCrystal Palace .svg

Rafa Benitez has just announced his Newcastle side for the important home game against Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace this afternoon and as we had expected in comes Gini Wijnaldum for Ayoze Perez as the one change to the team that did so well in fighting back last week against Liverpool.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback; Andros Townsend, Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko (c); Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Kevin Mbabu, Steven Taylor, Jonjo Shelvey, Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Crystal Palace (4-2-3-1): Wayne Hennessey; Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Damien Delaney, Pape Souare; Mile Jedinak (c), James McArthur; Jason Puncheon, Yohan Cabaye, Yannick Bolasie; Connor Wickham
Substitutes: Alex McCarthy, Adrian Mariappa, Martin Kelly, Joe Ledley, Bakary Sako, Dwight Gayle, Emmanuel Adebayor

Referee: Mike Dean (The Wirral)

Gini will now have this game to prove to Newcastle fans just how good he is as an attacking force and hopefully he can add to his 9 goals this season – all scored at home.

It’s not rocket science but we thought Gini would come in for Perez this week.

It also looks like Gini will be playing in the number 10 role with Moussa moving to the wing – but of course they can interchange too.

Wilfried Zaha is out injured and former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye returns to Newcastle for the first time since he left for PSG over two years ago.

This is a game we can win today and it’s a complete sellout – and that’s terrific – and one good way to keep Rafa at Newcastle next season – whatever happens.

This is what the manager has said about today’s game:

“Obviously we have to win.” “Crystal Palace will try their best but at this stage of the season everyone wants to win and knows how important it is.”

“The last few games we have seen the team spirit and the character – that is why everyone has more confidence.”

“Hopefully we can score the first goal and get the fans behind the team. Hopefully we will see that until the end of the season and into next season in the Premier League.”

“Everybody knows what it means to be in a final,” “It’s so hard to get into a final and once you’re there obviously you have to be careful.”

“Their players will be thinking about the final, in the back of their minds they will not want to pick up any injuries but also want to prove themselves.”

“But we have to think about our own situation and try to win. We’ll have the fans behind us and we have to give everything.”

“They were doing really well earlier in the season so we know that they have a good team that are well organised and play good counter attacking football.”

“Now they are more or less safe. You have to do the maths but, for me, they are safe.”

“When you prepare for the game you look for weaknesses in the opposition and unfortunately there aren’t too many.”

The main thing now is concentrating on our team so that we can win.”

A whopping 85% think we will win this game this afternoon.

Just knew Ed would have moved on as I wrote

    Repost
Someone mentioned Jimmy (Jinky) Smith yesterday a great player for us and I was privileged to watch him regularly back in the day.

However he also could be infuriating ( an adjective that often goes with comfortably with talented) and wasn’t always trusted by then Manager Joe Harvey because of his waywardness and Bob Moncur ( yes that one) would often be shouting at him.

A memorable game for me was V Wolves ( early 70’s?) and Jinky had already nutmegged Mike Bailey ( an old fashioned bruiser of a midfielder and Captain) twice and it was clear that he was chasing back after Jinky and giving him some advice about not trying it again.

Cue Jinky looking for an opportunity throughout rest of game and it finally came Jinky completed his hat-trick of nutmegs , took a blow to the face and Bailey was walking before Ref could get out red card.

Great fun at time and we won but he was I believe distracted from the game by his personal challenge and it probably wasn’t professional 🙂

Still one of my favourites and a joy to watch.

Happy enough with that, Perez hasnt really done much playing wide left. Hopefully thr dropping has kicked some life into Wini, he played his best for us out there.

Would still like Mitro in for Cisse.

Hope Tiote and Colback dont get carried away trying to kick Cabaye when the fans start booing him, cheap yellow card or worse.

Just got to hope this has given Wijnaldum the kick up the backside he needed !

Would like to see every time Townsend has the ball that Wijnaldum is sneaking into the box behind the full back trying to get on the end of crosses

Team to play Sunderland: Haugaard, Bardsley, Cameron, Shawcross, Pieters, Whelan, Imbula, Shaqiri, Adam, Arnautovic, Crouch.

Subs: Muniesa, Joselu, Diouf, Walters, Wollscheid, Krkic, Bachmann

At least Stoke have some players back from injury come on Hughes get the victory!!

Not entirely but it would be immensely preferable. As long as we win it is still on, getting harder but not yet impossible.

    Palace’s team any surprises?

The difference between me and alot of others is I say it how it is, it’s called being realistic. I know what we’re capable of, we’ve been the same for a long time.
We’re playing with flaws in our squad, no proven striker for a start, hence the lack of goals from them.
I’ll always give credit when it’s due though.
We can only live in hope though.

As you rightly say, Jinky was a joy to watch but only when he was on his game.

A highly talented player but sooooo infuriating when he would try to be clever once too often.

I remember one game when the lads turned out in our then Brazil-like away strip – it must’ve been a testimonial or the like at SJP – and they really played to the gallery. It was almost like an exhibition match.

But, back to Jinky… there was talk of Joe Harvey making him lap the pitch a few times, presumably to sweat out the beer and Jinky, who had a couple of cans tucked away somewhere would have a slug when he knew Joe wasn’t there to see him!

Such a character and in my view, he was worth every penny of the £100k they paid Aberdeen to get him.

And let’s not forget Tony Green who came in fir £140k from Blackpool – same gait as Dalglish when he was on the ball and such a pity his Toon career was cut short by injury. He came in within days of SuoerMac, another where £180k was money well spent.

Ahhh but back to today, it really shows how short we are of defensive talent when Saylor’s on the bench.

Anyway, Lawro fancies us at 2-0, but I’m going for 4-2……. Everything’s crossed.

at times we tend to ignore the realism i think just because of the love and passion for our club.we’ve been through a lot but i myself had already given up on this club after the everton loss but from somewhere there seem to be a glimmer hope that has managed to crop up, but i hope we give it our all and if we have to go down,we go down as warriors.

fortunately we are playing other teams in next 2 matches with flaws in their squads so with a better quality manager than they, who is gradually improving us there is room for some optimism.

Trouble is it is a harder fall from optimism than from realism /pessimism if it does go pear shaped 🙁

It is win or bust today. Regardless of results elsewhere imo. If we do win, then Villa is the same. Spurs may be a different story depending on where things stand.

We were blessed in those days but often took some hidings the embarassing turn out at FA cup final v Liverpool in 74 still haunts me after thinking we would excel on a big stage 🙁

Talking of which – in suggesting players the other night, who had gone on to better things I left out Supermac as I wasn’t sure whether he would qualify in that criteria or not given his career curtailing injury? Another favorite player who now irritates ( punditry) along with Beardo and Moncur.

Seems to be a bit of leeway afforded to Jinky Jimmy. (in comparison to HBA) Probably saw most of his games. Skilful -natural footballer and as stated his party trick of nutmegging apponents – no flukes as he constantly did it.
Beer, dames and gambling was his downfall.
Used to work in the Toon and would regularly see him coming out of betting shops,
Also exitting pubs – probably not after having a swifty – but staggering all over the place – not once or twice but regularly.
    A talent wasted.

I’ve supported and watched us play for many years, like every fan. But what is evident is our unpredictable performances, meaning occasionally we are excellent. But as soon as this season was a couple of games in I could see what we’re were all about, quality was missing and there’s a contagious lazy attitude which Rafa is struggling but just started to sort out.
Just hope it’s not too late.

What worries me is that we should dominate the game
but we haven’t had much success at finding the net
    when we have been dominating.

Palace on the defe3nsive, 10 players back, could be
a very very tough nut to crack.
