So Palace have had 10 penalties awarded to them this season.
How many have we had ? Nothing like as many I’m sure.

  • 2 magscar // May 1, 2016 at 5:48 AM

    Mag52
I believe we have had 2 – home to Man U and away at Norwich both scored by Mitro. From memory I don’t think we had more than a few in recent seasons. Bad refereeing at times perhaps but also our lack of play in the box in games 🙁

  • 3 Nufc-83 // May 1, 2016 at 6:58 AM

Whatsup are you a scum troll? Lucky average Elliot was out are you kidding me the guy has been player of the season and is by far the best keeper we have (although I do think even Elliot could be improved on).

  • 4 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 7:09 AM

    magscar ??

  • 5 benjohnsen // May 1, 2016 at 7:14 AM

    @mag52

To grt penalties you need to be in the box. Newcastle has for most the season stayed outside the box concentrated on possession and picking the ball out of our own net.

  • 6 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 7:16 AM

    Now I have Emoji envy.
I was attempting to agree not question magscar.

  • 7 Charlie in the Gallowgate // May 1, 2016 at 7:19 AM

    penalties
we have had 2 this season as magscar says
1 last season Away against Man Utd – Cisse scored
season before – i don’t think we had one.

Darlow’s penalty save – first save in 4 years.

Bugga I was physically and emotional drained when I got in last night

Shed a few tears at the minutes clapping when the TOON broke into ‘You’ll never walk alone

Atmosphere up and down went with the game – and the nervousness of the crowd

Great result – awful game –
Pity first half – we did not get to grip with Palace high ball hoof ball and adapted their tactics.
Second half lot better when we kept ball on the deck passed and moved.

Great Goal from Townsend – bit frustrating at times though when running across box – needs to get shot off.

MOM – I gave it to Darlow – played well saved penalty and challenged for/caught crosses coming into box.

Also: Colback had one of his best games for the TOON along with Lascalles.
And Anita who had another great game in defence and attack.

ALL in ALL graet result – but lads don’t blow all the hard work next weekend at VILLA

  • 8 will die for the toon army // May 1, 2016 at 7:21 AM

From Nottingham Forsst, I knew Lasceles was a good player. He is very composed and huge. Exprience is wat i wasnt sure of but he looks like he can handle the pressure. The big question is if we survive do we need a new CB or we develop our own Stones? coz i believe we have back up in Colo (if he stays and Dummett?

  • 9 Bambams // May 1, 2016 at 7:43 AM

The worry is which team will turn up at Villa

I said weeks ago I thought there would be a twist and we would get out the bottom three…..I just hope we can stay out.

If we survive my god we need to back Rafa. The man is head and shoulders above Smc.

  • 10 JDdubai // May 1, 2016 at 7:44 AM

Roll on Villa, if we can win there then it really turns the pressure up on the others for their midweek games afterwards. Must must beat villa obviously.

Same lineup for me but with Mitro on for Cisse, also would put Sissoko right, Townsend left and Wini in the hole. Sissoko’s touch just isnt good enough to play the 10.

  • 11 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 7:44 AM

Ha ha these MOM votes always give me a laugh. It’s hard to imagine, assuming they are not sadly toon-obsessed makems, the minds of people who adjudged Shelvey, Perez or Sissoko man of the match. F ***wits of the lowest order! 🙂

  • 12 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 7:52 AM

There’s a lot said about momentum in sport, often misplaced over-analysis, but in this type of end of season pressure situation it’s become crucial. It can swing, of course it can, but Norwich have crumbled at the prospect of the task in hand and Sunderland are floundering now. We are on a roll and undoubtably have the best fixture of the 3 next round. I think that in terms of the psychology it’s actually ours to lose now, despite their game in hand. We are still counting on the teams playing them to turn up and play. Pay attention, Chelsea and Everton in particular. Howay the lads!!

    QUESTION

do the bloggers that post during the game ever read back through there posts

must be very embarrassing for some

  • 14 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 8:13 AM

Apparently Anita played even though he was not fully fit, stiffness in both legs, I wonder if Mbabu will get a chance to start at villa.

  • 15 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 8:19 AM

    Hibbit

On the face of it that is a ‘RHETORICAL QUESTION’. But I think it shows a high degree of intelligence, charm and good looks when highlighting my own inconsistencies!

  • 16 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 8:21 AM

Watching Lascelles yesterday and on the tv rerun, we have to give promising young players their chance whenever the opportunity presents. Lascelles is young and has a lot to learn but the pace of his development is frightening. He is reading the game, leading really well, and that tackle on Whickam was nothing short of fabulous. He reminds me of a young Woodgate with more advanced leadership skills.

  • 17 Charlie in the Gallowgate // May 1, 2016 at 8:23 AM

    Lindisfarne
If Anita fit – got to start.
Settled back four got to be first choice and in the last few games have gelled well together.

thought Cisse struggled on his own up front yesterday but at the same time I would start the same team as yesterday.

And if I had to make a change it would be in midfield replace Winjanum – does not travel well with either Perez or Shelvey.

Mitro – I don’t know if their is 90 minutes in him yet – but by-gum he is brilliant coming on second half – Let the BEAST OUT!!!!!.

old HIPPO HEED allerdyce did’nt look happy last night

  • 18 Laurent Robert 32 // May 1, 2016 at 8:34 AM

Nice to see Lacelles have a jog round towards the fans’ direction to clap and cheer our contribution at the end. He was genuinely and positively elated. He certainly looks to be revelling in his status as a more regular Premier League player.

He’s done a really good job so far. As I mentioned a while back, he’s the best to jump and head the ball than we’ve had in a while. His couple of headed goals have been big contributions to the team. His ariel presence is a very welcome attribute for the team, especially in defence.

  • 19 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 8:35 AM

    Charlie
Yeah Cisse was so frustrating yesterday. Obviously if we had any proper options he would be well out of the picture. he’s at his best in and around the box pouncing on loose balls or ricochets. Let’s face it he is never going to be any good slightly isolated up front with the way we play. But at times he just loped around, incapable of holding up the ball or even controlling it. Maddening!
Rafa seems to see Mitro as limited to battering tiring defences, and still not able to last a full game!

  • 20 Laurent Robert 32 // May 1, 2016 at 8:35 AM

    *Lascelles

  • 21 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 8:38 AM

    Charlie

    I agree about the backline.

Cisse has got a poor first touch unless he is in front of goal, but Mitro does not do very well from kick off either. I would consider starting Perez as the lone striker as he is struggling with playing deeper and can actually distribute the ball.

I am not comparing Sissoko to Cabaye but I like them in the #10 position as they can drop back and bolster the midfield.

Aarons would be another option to replace Wijnaldum as Shelvey still does not fill me with confidence and we have improved without him starting.

    Allerdyce can swivel.

  • 22 AncientC // May 1, 2016 at 8:42 AM

Ed’s strange reaction to Asprilla’s strange reaction, interesting article.

  • 23 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 8:48 AM

Just woke up after a heavy night on the sauce and had to make sure it wasn’t a blurry alcohol induced dream I had yesterday…

…but we did WIN, the mackems did get a SPAWNY DRAW and Norwich did LOSE…and it doesn’t get much better than that!

Never thought we’d get in this position so soon

When do the mackems play their game in hand and who is it against?

  • 24 Charlie in the Gallowgate // May 1, 2016 at 8:48 AM

    Lindisfarne
Shelvey – when he came on – played like a headless chicken look a yard off the pace ran around fouling everyone.
Perez when running with ball – got to get head up had a great chance to get a second goal if had found pass to Townsend.

Never mind – as I say lets not blow it at Villa

  • 25 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 8:50 AM

Ancient…I was thinking the same…what’s so strange about the reaction????

  • 26 AncientC // May 1, 2016 at 8:50 AM

Colback was the best passer on the pitch yesterday, according to the stats. (Both sides)

  • 27 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 8:51 AM

The trouble with trying Fergie-esque mind games is that you look a total mug when it doesn’t come off.
Sam looked a bit desperate in his post game chat. Hope he’s starting to crack. He talks week in week out about those keeping their nerve prevailing. We came through another test.
Rafa remaining the coolest of the cool.

  • 28 AncientC // May 1, 2016 at 8:51 AM

Sparky55, no idea. It sounds like Asprilla was abroad and woke up to some good news…

  • 29 Ron Knee // May 1, 2016 at 8:52 AM

    According to Mark Douglas:

“Newcastle United are prepared to cede serious control of club affairs to Rafa Benitez in an attempt to persuade him to stay at St James’ Park.”

    However:

“Would Benitez really be prepared to manage in the second tier? It still seems unlikely.”

  • 30 Jail for Ashley // May 1, 2016 at 8:53 AM

Great atmosphere yesterday, I don’t see how the crowd transmitted their nerves to the players, we started really poorly and Palace, unlike Swansea wanted to win or draw. The crowd obviously reacted to tge lack of quality. Also the fact that Palace’s 2K supporters out sung the whole Milburn stand is not helped by the fact the normally £50 Platinum club is populated by Chinese students, Scottish boys football clubs and Dutch stag do’s.

  • 31 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 8:54 AM

Ancient…hardly strange though!…perhaps ED just woke up and didn’t get it!

  • 33 Nufc-83 // May 1, 2016 at 8:57 AM

Jdubia I don’t think we should be moving Townsend from left to right considering the contribution he has made from the left. I would take cisse out and put mitro or even Perez (if he wants more mobility). Socks and gini frustrate the hell out of me and we can’t seem to get them in the game I think Aaron’s has to come in for gini as he’s just not offering anything over 90 mins. I would like to see SDJ in the hole but not sure if I would drop socks or bring him off after 50-60 mins. SDJ looks much more intelligent in possession and can hit them from distance aswell

  • 34 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 8:59 AM

    Beermonkey

So does that mean Norwich and the scum both have two matches in the last week???

If so that could be helpful and also helpful for us would be if Leicester win the league before spurs come to us.

It would seem the stars are aligning 🙂

  • 35 Jail for Ashley // May 1, 2016 at 8:59 AM

I think we could stay up. Will I be called a hypocrite for thinking we will definitely go down after the Norwich and Soton defeats.

  • 36 hibbitt // May 1, 2016 at 9:00 AM

    Ron Knee

if they give what he wants i think he will stay even IF we go down

all we can do is keep winning AV next another win would pile the pressure on the other 2 clubs

we can do this keep the faith

  • 37 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 9:01 AM

    Jail

    Aye! 🙂

That would be at least me and you together though! 🙂

  • 38 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 9:03 AM

The next major effect I would like to see from Rafa is to somehow get the team to START quickly. I agree that the start was very poor, hesitant. Next week we need to start on the front foot, Villa completely bereft of confidence..so we need to put the foot on their neck and keep it there. We must not let them grow into it, let’s not make it harder ffs. Get into them Rafa!

  • 39 Jail for Ashley // May 1, 2016 at 9:04 AM

On better views. I didn’t even know why the penalty was given yesterday and after MoTD I had to wait until the anylisis to find out.

  • 40 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 9:06 AM

Who cares who was right or wrong lads! We can do it!! The thrills and spills of being a toon fan! I’m still buzzin after the game yesterday!! (Can you tell??). 🙂

  • 41 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 9:08 AM

    Jail
Spot on. Me neither. But I’ll never forget the stunned, deathly hush all around for what seemed like half a season while Mike dean walked round tapping his hand and pointing to the spot!!

  • 42 sparky55 // May 1, 2016 at 9:09 AM

Corner…you’re right mate but you just cant coach confidence. the lads are nervous, no-one wants to be the one the makes a mistake that leads to the opposition scoring,no-one wants to caught out of position, no-one wants to give the ball away so everything is safe and un-penetrating.

Hopefully they’ll have more confidence after this win but Rafa will be telling them Villa will be the hardest game and that it’s a must win so lots of pressure.

Who knows if a confident team will turn up…but they’ve doing great and we’ve not got a real chance of staying up 🙂

  • 43 beermonkey // May 1, 2016 at 9:10 AM

  • 47 hibbitt // May 1, 2016 at 9:15 AM

    Ron Knee

got to go to villa and win do that then we have a chance
the odds are swinging in our favour

we can do this keep the faith

  • 48 martoon // May 1, 2016 at 9:15 AM

JFA I’m probably biassed but I’m not convinced it was a penalty however I’m not sure why Sissoko has his hand in the air like that so maybe it was who cares now 🙂
Sparky they effectively have 3 games in one week Saturday, Wednesday and Sunday it just might help us!

  • 49 Jail for Ashley // May 1, 2016 at 9:18 AM

I thought we’d been in the bottom three since Christmas, Ed says we’re out of the bottom three for the first time in eleven games?

  • 50 Lindisfarne // May 1, 2016 at 9:19 AM

The morning after vibes on here are thick with self satisfaction and a hint of afterglow.

  • 51 martoon // May 1, 2016 at 9:21 AM

If we could beat Villa and the makems lose to Chelsea then they would be under tremendous pressure to get something from their extra midweek game otherwise they’ll be down – that could really work to our advantage 🙂

  • 52 jimmysmith // May 1, 2016 at 9:22 AM

He didn’t really try to head the ball, and it flicked his extended hand, putting off the Palace player, who was fairly trying to attack the ball. It was a stupid pen. I’m surprised he hasn’t received greater criticism, despite the win.

  • 53 Bambams // May 1, 2016 at 9:23 AM

I still think we will need a result on the last game of the season.

  • 54 martoon // May 1, 2016 at 9:24 AM

JFA according to BBC since 1st Feb who are we to argue with the beeb and Ed!

  • 55 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 9:25 AM

Yep,he’d have been strung up had the pen gone in. If I was him I’d be buying Darlow a wee present.

    Sitc@41

The award made be feel that the fates were still against us but the save then made me feel we are going to do it. A change of emotion in a few seconds. But that has been the way of late as Jail refered to earlier – and no you are not a hypocrite 🙁

One thing that struck me again that after another poor nervous first half Rafa even without substitutes had effected a change in composure and attitude after half time.
How long since we had a manager who could react effectively to situations.
Would rather he didn’t have to but relieved he can!

  • 57 sing in the corner // May 1, 2016 at 9:28 AM

    Lindisfarne
Afterglow…certainly! But Self satisfaction? Not in my view. Maybe just drunk on a rare bright spot in another agonising season. We’re entitled to that surely?

  • 58 Spoof // May 1, 2016 at 9:32 AM

Just seen the highlights again on motd, Danny Murphy is right, why was Lascellas over-looked by Macca when Colo was so obviously poor, he is tall, strong, quick and a threat when we have a set piece, and an added bonus is that he will kick arse when others are slacking, this is the defender that we have been crying out for for many seasons and when we finally have him the numpty previous manager doesn’t play him, SM, hang your head in shame.

  • 59 lesh // May 1, 2016 at 9:33 AM

In the spirit of fairness, let’s hope that fate is even-handed and Sunlun and Norwich don’t suffer any more injuries or sendings off than they deserve. 😀
