Newcastle Have Already Started Their Huge Summer Clear Out

There was news just before the game yesterday in the Chronicle that Newcastle have already started their clear-out for the summer when a number of players will leave the club whether or not we are relegated.

Two of the players whose contracts end in June – Sylvain Marveaux and Gabby Obertan – are said to have already left the club.

We suppose their contracts have been paid up through the end of June, but exactly why they are being allowed to leave now we have no idea – unless they are injured and cannot participate in training for the next two weeks.

gabby obertan soutmaton first game

Gabby Obertan – signed from Manchester United

Marveaux was signed as a free agent in June of 2011 from Rennes, but he has not been a success and played only 57 times with two goals during those five years, one of which was on loan to Guingamp.

Gabby was a slightly better buy and played 69 times with three goals in the five years he was on Tyneside.

The success of players like Andros Townsend, Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow have shown the risk of buying English (British) players is much reduced from Graham Carr bringing in untested players from the continent and particularly from France.

Other players whose contracts run out in June and will not be renewed include Steven Taylor, Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic.

And players who are also almost certain to leave in the summer are Fabricio Coloccini, Manu Riviere, Yoan Gouffran and loanee striker Seydou Doumbia

Remy Cabella is expected to join Marseille for around £6M and we could also possibly allow Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote to leave.

But the form of those last two is such that Newcastle may want to keep them at the club for the last year of their contracts. especially if Rafa Benitez is still with us as manager for next season.

If we are relegated expect Moussa Sissoko, Gini Wijnaldum and Daryl Janmaat to want to leave the club.

Comments welcome.

In response to your comment previous thread, Rafa knows a dud when he see’s one I have a one word reply, ‘Taylor’?

As for Marveaux and Obertan, I think we’d have to get a decent run of games under a good manager to see how good they might actually be before consigning them to the scrap heap.

Wonder who will be in the next batch or French rejects Carr “finds” supose it will be down to the usual agency and most likley a brown envelope stuffed with cash.
If Rafa does nothing else but find a decent back room setup he will have been the best manager since SBR

had a quick scan on some of rafa’s buys
looks like he got shot of them when he knew they were no good

obatan and marveax have had the best part of 25mill in wages over the last 5 years because no1 could or was bothered to offload them

    EGB,
Taylor is not really a dud but unfortunately past it, he must have done something in training for Rafa to pick him.

Really want us to stay up, what a shambles it would be if we go down. Lose Rafa and the potential we would have had with him.

The only good thing would be to see players like Janmaat and Sissoko leave because there heart was never here in the first place. Same with Wijnaldum it seems.

Townsend has put all three to the sword, even when he’s having a bad game he never hides, his work rate is unbelievable and the passion he is showing for our club is outstanding. If we stay up it is purely down to Rafa, Lascelles, Elliot, Darlow and Townsend. With help coming from the injuries to Coloccini and ‘Janmaat’ and the captaincy being given to Sissoko.

Lascelles is really looking like the real deal and I doubt he will be going anywhere soon, even if we are relegated.

Perez has also really disappointed me this season, maybe he believes in his own hype. Hope he comes through this stronger.

I fully expect the following departures
Saylor, Coloccini, Cabella, Thauvin, Tiote, Cisse regardless. Sissoko and Janmaat if we go down or if a big enough offer came in. I’d even say Krul isn’t guaranteed to stay.

I think the new squad will be rebuilt around whatever is left. I hope whatever happens Rafa stays – the manager we should’ve had.

As I previously said, don’t be surprised if someone doesn’t put in a big bid for Lascelles even if we don’t go down.

I can just see the £ sign flashing up in MAs eyes.

It would be a real road to Damascus moment if he didn’t try to cash in.

It probably sounds like I really hate Taylor from my posts, I don’t.
As a younger fitter man he wasn’t a bad player even getting to the fringe of England selection.
But injuries and time have made him slower and not able to keep up with the modern game and playing him now is costing us points, just my opinion though.

I doubt a big offer will come in for him, he hasn’t played enough games to be a worthy risk. He obviously has the potential but he needs to show more. Il be gutted if we lose him like, he has been the centre half that we have been needing for a while. Athletic, strong and quick, Mbemba is also a great partner for him. I can’t help but think that Coloccini is the reason he looks so improved, maybe he’s coaching him behind the scenes knowing that his time is up.

As has been pointed out before Colo and Taylor were our centre backs when we went down. The fact they’re still here is a joke. Mbemba and Lascelles would get a game in many PL sides. Would the other two has beens?

when hogson bought smalling from maidstone he was only at fullham a season and man u bought him in the jan and he stayed till the end of that season
from maidstone to fullham to man u in a season
he hadnt played to the level lashelles has and was unknown i think and man u stumped up 10mill for him

lashelles was widely tipped to be a top centre back and there were alot of good clubs chasing him when we bought him city chelsea i think to name 2
he has also trained with the full england as hogson was looking to fast track him and other players

i can see some bids to test the water 10-12 mill and see what happens

    If we stay up:

    1. get rid of charnley and Carr and let Rafa control transfers and bring in his own scouting team

    2. Get rid of Janmaat, Taylor, Coloccini Haidara, Saivet, Gouffran, Thauvin, Sissoko, Cisse, Riviere and Doumbia.

    3. Bring in more characters, leaders, grafters. Players who could be available that we should defo snap up: Cahill, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Carrick, Redmond, Defoe/Andre Gray

Just let Rafa do his thing, Mike.

£25m, blimey makes your eyes water.

Can’t blame them though, when they were actually fit it didn’t look as though any of the incumbent managers of the time wanted to play them, Marveuax at any rate. I think Gabby would have had a good run in the team if he didn’t keep getting crocked.
Would still like to see what Rafa could do with them but as Ed said they are probably waiting for the taxi.

Sammy & Vuckic still have another year left on their contracts.

Perez is the player I would most like to see moved on if a good offer came in. Perez’s tempo, urgency, and drive isn’t exactly cutting edge, and personally I have doubts over how much he will improve. He really needs to be playing as a striker, and considering we only play with 1 upfront, that leaves his chances of playing his preferred role very limited.

If the club were to receive around 12 million for Perez, it could be money well spent on a player with a defined position. Keeping Perez and using him on the left flank just isn’t efficient.

Beer, thanks for the update, very interesting in smalling’s case. Maybe there will be some bids coming our way then. Why does he look so improved and established now then earlier on in the season? I feel like maybe he just needed a run in the first team but still he has improved massively since his red card game.

its an ilogical way to run a club the way we do it

if we are succesfull on the pitch u get more money for finishing higher your players look better and are worth more
    thats the logical way

    EGB,
I’ve been saying for a while now that he should be moved on, I prefered Willo over him. 14 games a season simply isn’t enough return for a player whether or not his pay is performance related.

Really can’t make my mind up about Gini and Perez, if we stay up I think Rafa will keep Gini and play him as a number 10, and he always seems to like a striker that will run the channels like Torres did at Liverpool, that’s what I feel Perez could become, he’s not quick or direct enough to be a winger, he’s tricky but he’s very lightweight.

rafa has us more compact and we move as 2 banks of 4
with tiote sitting there is a bit more cover
so the defence is less exposed
and i think just overall the players are trying now

Lascelles has to be our first choice CB next season regardless of whether we stay up. Mbemba has got all the attributes to be the perfect partner for him (like a Ferdinand/Vidic partnership) but he’s looked quite shaky and lacks a bit of bottle. Dummett should defo be converted to a CB, and a new left back and right back with better pace and work rate than janmaat and Dummett needs to come in, that’s why I’d bring in Arsenal duo Jenkinson and Gibbs, even if they are a bit injury prone, they are a huge upgrade on what we have. Janmaat’s defensive work rate is awful

Cahill could be available as well this summer would love him. Carrick born and bred Geordie could do a job for a free. And either Redmond or possibly Walcott/Chamberlain if available

We need more domestic players as the likes of Darlow/Jamaal/Townsend have proved that they are more reliable signings

marveax with his injury he had before we got him should never have been given a 5 year deal

i dont mind the club taking a punt but these 5 year deals are crippling the club as we are lumbered with them
i dont mind the fact we have a wage limit and budgets but when we cripple ourselves through our own stupidity it really annoys me

why on earth do we want 2 injury prone players from arsenal they might be better but its no good if there in the treatment room
we need players that are fit for 30 games a season not 10 we only have a certain amount to spend why waste it on unfit players

    Lets presume we stay up.
The players I think should go are:
Colo, Jaanmat and Sissoko, any player who has had himself deliberately sent off does not deserve to wear the shirt of any club. Taylor as he’s injury prone and not good enough anymore. Cisse as he’s not done enough for another contract. Haidara, not good enough even for a back up. Tim Krul, we can’t afford or keep happy three top keepers and Darlow looks like a new hero added to the fact Krul is to ingrained with the Ashley losing mentality and could still maybe fetch 5M. SDJ, who? Gouffran, bought as a stop gap and Leon Best was better. Thauvkn and Cabella, are they actually Newcastle’s players?

Who would you suggest as alternatives? They are english and massive improvements on what we have even if they do get injured, it’s like saying you wouldn’t have Sturridge but when he’s fit he’s such a deadly goal scorer. I’ve had enough of this foreign so called “Carr gems” who played well in the French or Dutch league but haven’t got the fight or passion for the prem. Only domestic alternatives i can think of are Iorfa from Wolves and Daniels from Bournemouth
