It´s not often that Paul Merson has any praise for Newcastle United and he is usually criticizing the Newcastle fans.
But after yesterday´s classic encounter against Crystal Palace and all 3 points – Paul praised Newcastle.
Paul had praise for our best two players yesterday – Karl Darlow and Andros Townsend – who is turning out to be a tremendous acquisition for us from Tottenham.
This lad was born to play at Newcastle and he scored another sensational goal for us yesterday direct from a free kick after 59 minutes to put us in the lead.
It could be the goal of the season for us.
Paul Merson – praise for Karl Darlow and Andros Townsend
And Karl Darlow is quickly becoming a hero on Tyneside and he made just an unbelievable save after the Townsend goal when he saved a Yohan Cabaye penalty.
St. James’Park had gone deadly silent after Moussa had given away the penalty from a corner but the crowd erupted when Darlow moved quickly to his left to block the shot and the ball was cleared for a corner.
This is what Paul Merson said on Soccer Saturday about Darlow:
“He was outstanding,” “He didn’t do anything wrong. I remember the game at West Brom where he was probably at fault for the goal, but he paid Newcastle back today.”
“I am well pleased for him, you make one mistake as a goalkeeper and you’ve had it, but today he had a great game.”
“The one thing I do like about Andros Townsend, he always gets on the ball.”
“Some of his passing in the first half wasn’t great, he was giving the ball away cheaply, but he always gets on it.”
“That’s what you need at Newcastle, you need big players.”
It was a very tough game for us yesterday and credit to Palace for playing so well – especially in that first half when they were the better side and but for three excellent saves from Darlow we could have been in some trouble.
But our lads held together to get the win – our 8th of the seaosn – which could yet save us from the drop with just two games to play.
Comments welcome.

Comment #1That’s worrying, Merson talking positively about Newcastle. The man doesn’t know his arse from his elbow when it comes to punditry, methinks.

Comment #2we need a win at Villa. crazy but
i aint scared on Spurs we are at
home and Spurs will give us a
chance to counter which i
believe we r good at.

I think Lasceles had earned it at Everton though we lost 3-0 he played so well gave away the pen but that was ok. he wld learn but Mcca threw him away.
This time around we shld thank Taylor for getting injured Rafa had thrown him too but he had still earned it at Leceister and Mackems
I think it was experience both managers were scared of not ability but he came out right

Comment #10A year in the Championship ideally for Arma, who has done well, but not so well as to warrant a place in the side or bench at the beginning of the season. Still very young.

Comment #11Bambams from the previous thread,
You said something which made me think, which is dangerous as my thoughts will almost certainly get me shot to pieces, but anyhow here I go……..
Why sack Penfold, seriously you have not misread those three words as I did actually say them, or right them as the case may be, we all know his image and his standing amongst the majority of fans, and it may be duly deserved, but then again if you look at prior to Penfold we had JFK and before him it was Dracula, what was the club then, a cash cow for Ashley without any hoipe what-so-ever, can we say that now, I don’t think we can due to the fact that since Penfold took over Ashley has for the first time spent some money, granted Penfold allowed the wrong man in Graham Carr to spend it but it is quite possible that Penfold has realised the owner’s and his own limitations and has realised what we all knew, that being that Carr was a tosser so he has acted and is prepared to hand all footballing matters over to Rafa who is obviously a very good and knowledgeable manager, we now have a good manager and an owner who will spend, hopefully Penfold hasn’t left it too late when replacing SM, but if we do survive and keep Rafa which is what both club and fans seem too want then surely we have to take our hats off to Penfold, it is quite possible that he has played a major role in transforming our club into the type of club that we long for.

Comment #13Lascelles would have to have a great pre season to make a restructured Benitez first 11in the EPL, wouldn’t you think? A side that has had say 150 million spent on it over 3 windows. We know we’ll be in for a top notch centre back, considering at the minute we have Colo and Taylor. And Lascelles ahead of Mbemba seems unlikely.

Comment #14Yeah, sure, if we are relegated Arma will definitely figure, you’d think.
