It’s interesting that we failed to put the chances away today – wasn’t it a proven Premier League striker that we were going to sign last summer?

  • 2 WheresSholaNow // May 7, 2016 at 5:40 PM

The only players who should be guaranteed a place next season are Darlow, Lascelles, Mbemba, Armstrong and Townsend – I don’t think there are any others who we couldn’t do without

  • 3 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 5:40 PM

    mbembas cross…..highlight!

  • 4 Ron Knee // May 7, 2016 at 5:41 PM

Townsend will be the first out of the door.

  • 6 welshgeordie9 // May 7, 2016 at 5:42 PM

Ed, don’t ask us to pick our best player.

  • 7 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 5:43 PM

    wheresshola
lascelles will be picked up by a premier league for his end season performances, possibly mbemba as well, townsend has a clause to leave for certain fee and armstrong just a youngin who may not be good enough….went off the boil towards the end of the season

  • 8 Bri // May 7, 2016 at 5:44 PM

I just hope next season when we are in the Championship we invest in players who are committed and actually give a damn. And as for you Graeme Carr, fcuk off.I don’t want anymore recommendations from you regarding players, otherwise it will be another relegation fight.

  • 9 WheresSholaNow // May 7, 2016 at 5:44 PM

    RK

I’m sure he will be, that’s what makes it even more depressing haha

  • 10 Jib // May 7, 2016 at 5:46 PM

    Stuart
Dick Advocaat exchanged Defoe for the Canadian who wanted to go home – Jerzy Altidore – the Mackems got lucky

  • 11 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 5:47 PM

Watching everton now and it doesn’t augur well for them – or us – on wednesday. Still, stranger things have happened so let’s see what Wednesday night brings. If a miracle happens we can still go into the final match, at home, with a chance. A highly unlikely scenario, but this been a highly unlikely season. We ain’t down yet, but could be on wednesday night, so fingers clinging tightly to that distant hope. Gutted doesn’t do it justice.

  • 12 manxpie // May 7, 2016 at 5:48 PM

Lilo the can’t have it both ways comment wasn’t directed at you tbh but others who have just blamed the managers
But today I do have blame on the set up and selection for this game
they didn’t worry us once not once!
Having 2 DM’s wasn’t right for me we needed to win

  • 13 lochinvar // May 7, 2016 at 5:49 PM

Everton are in no mood to win any games and 1-0 down at Leicester it’s hardly likely they are going to make a fight of it at Mackemland midweek. They also have ambitions of grabbing Rafa which is even more galling.
Just hope that Rafa and his team are men enough to pick up the challenge of getting us back up – if they stay until Xmas and decide on their futures then that would be significant.
If he’s not going to stay then we better get Pearson in before Villa do.
I’m no longer angry just washed out.

    Lowlights*

  • 15 manxpie // May 7, 2016 at 5:51 PM

Martinez probably hates us as I do him due to the abuse he has got since “that” tackle and his team looks shocking so no chance of them beating the scum,
    So relegation it is

  • 16 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 5:51 PM

    bobby
they will be so up for it wed they could tear everton a new one….was never confident our players had it in them to do enough….i hoped but never confident…sad to say but it looks like i might of been right…..one hope left

  • 17 Small World // May 7, 2016 at 5:52 PM

Today Townsend & Anita looked OK if not setting the world alight. If (when) we go down, they’ll be gone.

Never mind we can always slot in Janmatt and Sissoko instead, errr……..

Looks like more of a rebuilding job than we imagine – and we thought we had problems down the left side!

  • 18 davis_toons // May 7, 2016 at 5:53 PM

Shelvey coming in will leak goals and when worst when he doesn’t produce what is required of him..the hollywood passes.

With him leading the team it ended with all defeats. Thats Shelvey. The player what we should have bought was his team-mates – JackCork or the Korean that runs the midfield Ki Sung-yueng.

Why Shelvey? As yourself why townsend (the guy that comes with him), Cheick Tiote (the forgotten one), Colback (the hard worker) and any other forgotten players are ahead of him?

Shelvey is a shit player. Sorry to be direct.
SteveG runs for the team like crazy. Shelvey waits for his mates to run for him. The nature is just not in him.

If we cant even afford Hatem Ben Arfa. We surly cannot afford Shelvey.

    Manx,
Fair enough, the managers here have copped a lot of flak when others should have taken blame. I gave Pardew stick because I didn’t fell he got the most out of players and he bored me to tears with his style. We got 3 or more goal defeats because of his setup and style. Still, even under Pardew the players ably demonstrated their ability to mix it up with better sides when the mood took them. So surely they have to take the blame, you can’t blame Pardew for only being able to motivate against the big clubs.

Today was poor, and I agree we needed to get at them more. I think Mitro is our top scorer since the turn of the year. He has only completed 12 games all season in the league. Against teams like Norwich, Sunderland and Villa today he has to be involved from the beginning as in all of those we knew we had to win. He rescues us against Sunderland, did his best with 2 goals against Norwich, but couldn’t today. Cisse hasn’t been able to trap a bag of sand for weeks.

Still, even starting Cisse and using Mitro as a sub, we needed to win, so why like for like. I think it’s over, would take a serious implosion from Sunderland ad Spuds to change that.

  • 20 Newcastle for alltid // May 7, 2016 at 5:55 PM

So I guess it`s more or less over now. To be honest, we could have scored the winner both against Man City, Liverpool and today. If we did, we`d probably be safe, more or less.

Margins, margins, but in the end you can`t escape the fact that we just haven`t been good enough this season, and the players don`t have anyone else to blame but themselves. Mcclaren should have been sacked earlier. But it`s no use dwelling on that now.

I don`t think we`ll be bouncing straight back up this time, as the team doesn`t possess the same leaders and characters that we had in 09/10. The strategy of getting rid of the “older” characters and replacing them with raw, foreign talent for future cash-in was ultimately the downfall that lead to this.

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // May 7, 2016 at 5:55 PM

Martinez is a poor poor manager. Relying on him to keep us up (other than when it is his team we are competing against) is little more than a fools hope.

    10 Jib // May 7, 2016 at 5:46 PM

Re: Defoe. Sometimes you make your own luck. It appeared as though he was being touted to us on a regular basis before Sunderland (and also before his move to Canada). I don’t think he fitted in with our recruitment policy……

  • 23 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 5:56 PM

leicester having a canny party….they’ve earned it…congrats and enjoy it leicester,we have the 7th highest wage bill in the premier….but lowest quality and commitment in the premier league

  • 24 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 5:58 PM

Sunday needs to be all about Rafa and trying to get him to stay. If there’s any chance we have to keep him. If he stays we bounce back and start again. I think he wants to stay, but no doubt his agent might see it differently. Being his own man, he’ll make his own mind up and that might be the difference. It’s been a crap season, only brought to life when he came in, albeit to late.

  • 25 Lilongwe Geordie // May 7, 2016 at 5:58 PM

The ability is there in our players. The guts and attitude are seriously lacking and have been for several seasons. Players coming in have been affected by this.

People argue that this is top down, and Ashley’s lack of ambition and policies. Probably fair to a point, but if you lack any sort of personal pride then you get seasons like this, regardless of the clubs policies.

  • 26 Jib // May 7, 2016 at 5:59 PM

    You think you know stuff
    But you know sfa really
I thought we’d smack Villa and Chelsea the same on Wearyside.
    Quite shocked really

  • 27 GeordieTwo // May 7, 2016 at 6:00 PM

A cruel blow. If we do end up going down it’s all due to the executives from the owner on down. Complete failure there and a complete failure to do anything about it until it was too late. First out the door should be Charnley and Carr.

    stuart no9 // May 7, 2016 at 5:48 PM

colback, cisse, gini, soko and to be fair , if we are going to start from scratch , mitro- need to be on their way . we need to get back to basics , up and coming kids WITH TALENT and get raffa to gel them into a team FIT for the prem , Too many ”so called ” big players not good enough fot the championship never mind the prem

  • 29 Jib // May 7, 2016 at 6:03 PM

    I thought
    Jolean Lescott aged 33
    Alan Hutton aged 31
were 2 of the best players on the park today.

  • 30 GeordieTwo // May 7, 2016 at 6:03 PM

I thought Wijnaldum was extremely poor once again. And Cisse was absolutely hopeless. Shocking really. The defense held fast and have been steadily improving under Rafa. We missed some decent chances that would have given us the points. Colback, Mitro and I think Wijnaldum even had one. Rafa did all he could. Failure to sack McLaren early enough was the biggest mistake of all.

  • 31 wolfshead@toon // May 7, 2016 at 6:03 PM

    lilo

look at the players pardew had to pick from his 2nd best defender was mike williamson ffs are you saying mclaren and benitez had a worse squad

  • 32 Jail for Ashley // May 7, 2016 at 6:04 PM

Too inebriated to look through all the previous posts. Were people actually blaming Rafa, as much as I like Mitro he simply isn’t good enough yet. Colback was free. We had two very chances and didn’t score. It’s what happens when you gamble!

  • 33 manxpie // May 7, 2016 at 6:04 PM

Lilo well i just find it funny that now we have a top manager the players are finally getting the brunt of it when I’ve been saying ir for years that’s all

let’s face it there’s a huge number of reasons why we are where we are and ultimately it’s Ashley Wat a kernt!
And to see Leicester now is unbelievable and heartbreaking at the same time

    – Best comment on here for along time!

Re: earlier remarks about Mitrovic. Although Rafa has used him sparingly, he has actually turned him around and he’s been quite celarly coached to face the goal, as opposed to him backing in and chesting the ball down.

SBR did soemthing similar with Shearer when he came to the club, with brilliant results. Unfortunately Mitro isn’t in his class.

  • 35 Novocastrian66 // May 7, 2016 at 6:04 PM

If Defoe was playing for us we would be safe. Cisse was an embarrassment today. I would go so far to say Armstrong would have put away Cisse’s chances.
Mitro and Amstrong next season will be a potent force.

  • 36 Lilongwe Geordie // May 7, 2016 at 6:07 PM

Anyway, moving forward…… I do think we are down now. I held onto hope until the Norwich defeat. Thoughts started creeping back in, but in the back of my mind it felt like prolonging the agony. I thought (and still think) the players are good enough to stay up. They just don’t have the attitude. Looking at those in and around, I’d take Redmond, then possibly Cattermole and/or Defoe. I think what we have is better than the rest, ability wise, maybe just not attitude wise.

A clearing of the decks was needed last year, this year we will get it, whether by our own choice or not. I’d happily see quite a few of the so called stars head out the door. We need a blend of graft and application. That will largely depend on the transfer model changing I guess. Plus not a small amount of luck – hopefully Ashley isn’t making his own this year…..

On the positive side, could be a beneficial learning curve for players like Arma, Mbabu, Aarons, Sterry, Heaney. To an extent Woodman, although I’d anticipate Krul leaving and Darlow battling it out with Elliot.

Can we go back up? Yeah, course, the league is competitive, but it isn’t good. A lot will depend on Ashley and who he decides to be in charge on and off the field.

  • 37 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 6:08 PM

Springy, i know marra, just trying to stem the tears. 😉 Everton look as clueless as us! But then, in this crazy season, you just never know. It wasn’t not beating villa that sent us down, it was the whole season. Bad transfers. 80m blown. We all knew what we needed, but the clowns in charge did it their way and now must pay pay the price with their jobs.

  • 38 davis_toons // May 7, 2016 at 6:08 PM

Both Cisse and Mitro are just not good enough. That’s just how MC got his sacking. Many a times when we were playing decent football and creating so many chances. They miss time and again.

Mitro is always a starter for MC but he misses too many chances. When strikers don’t score goals the whole team suffers. They need to bury it.

  • 39 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 6:10 PM

    lil
not convinced there is a lot of ability…all season the players passing has been poor, decision making poor, shooting poor, control poor…..finishing poor,i know confidence is a big part of any players ability but look at leicester….worst percentage of posession of any champions but effective, not what you call a star filled team but graft, pressure and have desire to not get beat……they say if you dont have talent, then all you can do is work hard….our players dont…i think they believe they are better then what they are….some of them anyway.

  • 40 nearly // May 7, 2016 at 6:10 PM

    Lochinvar @13

Why Pearson I really don’t understand why people want him ,premier manager I don’t think so

  • 41 Moonraker15 // May 7, 2016 at 6:32 PM

    Jib
Lescott and Hutton are both crap we made them look good that’s how bad we really are. I think it’s sad but relegation will be a relief. Maybe this is the start of a new era! or not !
