Unchanged Team For Vital Game At Aston Villa

2:02 pm, Saturday, May 7th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 371 Comments

aston villanufc emblem

Rafa Benitez has just announced the team to play Aston Villa this afternoon and it’s an unchanged side from the side that beat Crystal Palace 1-0 last Saturday – with Gini Wijnaldum holding his place in midfield.

Aston Villa (3-5-2): Mark Bunn; Alan Hutton, Ciaran Clark, Joleon Lescott (c), Kevin Toner, Leandro Bacuna; Ashley Westwood, Carlos Sanchez, Idrissa Gueye; Jordan Ayew, Scott Sinclair
Substitutes: Brad Guzan, Micah Richards, Jordan Lyden, Carles Gil, Jack Grealish, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Adama Traore

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Vurnon Anita, Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback; Andros Townsend, Moussa Sissoko (c), Georginio Wijnaldum; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Jonjo Shelvey, Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Referee: Robert Madley (West Yorkshire)

Daryl Janmaat returns from injury and as expected takes his place on the bench with Anita continuing at right-back.

Rafa has gone with a team in form and our bench is strong for this game too.

This is what Rafa has said about the game today:

“It’s important, this message that we’re giving to them – no complacency. Concentrate,”

“We have seen Aston Villa’s last game and they were doing well against Watford. They did really well, so it’s really important.”

“We will play against Tottenham in the next game, but I think that the most important is this one.”

“If we win this one, we’ll approach the next one with the fans behind us and it will be easier to keep everyone on their toes and motivated.”

“But for this game, we need to be sure we’re focused and we cannot lose our concentration.”

“Villa are a good team, but they are in a bad position and they have lost confidence, but they still have some good players and the work rate is there.”

For us, that is the main thing – that we will play at our level.”

“If we win, it will be because the players are working as hard as they are working now. If we cannot, maybe it will be because Aston Villa have done well, but I have the confidence that we can win.”

There is real confidence amongst the fans that we can win this game.

Wow that Villa team is something isnt it

  • 2 Ibizatoon // May 7, 2016 at 2:05 PM

I still haven’t seen much from Cisse to understand why he’s starting, but over the 90 minutes and with subs the team has been doing the job, so in Rafa I trust.

I guess it’s more to do with Mitro doing better as a sub, rather than Cisse being a better starter.

Pleased to see Anita starting and not Janmaat.

  • 3 one fine day // May 7, 2016 at 2:12 PM

    ibiza
think give him 45 tops to pull them around and then bring on mitro
looks like man u are already on the beach
    simply awful to watch

  • 4 Mister Tuff // May 7, 2016 at 2:13 PM

Surerly Gini and/or Cisse must be due a goal.

  • 5 AncientC // May 7, 2016 at 2:13 PM

Hutton playing as a wing-back, what are they thinking lol.

  • 6 Ron Knee // May 7, 2016 at 2:14 PM

How much did LVG have to spend on this team?

  • 7 Ibizatoon // May 7, 2016 at 2:14 PM

one fine day…I guess so. I just find him totally frustrating these days (well, for a while now).

Unless they’re going to serve balls to him in the box to shoot, he doesn’t generally offer a lot.

It has been working though, overall.

Not watching the Man U game. What a bunch of [insert colourful word here]! Still, go Man U!

  • 8 Belfast // May 7, 2016 at 2:14 PM

Think we’ve been getting away with it for a few weeks now starting Cisse. Let’s hope it continues today.

Still can’t see why he’s starting though lol

  • 9 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 2:15 PM

Why change something that’s working. Like you, ibiza, i would like to see mitro start, but you can see his point. Let cisse tire them out, then bring on the big lad. I’d have liked to see Aarons get a run. Get in, manure!!!

  • 16 EllaGuru // May 7, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Armstrong could be in for a lot of playing time next year, regardless of what division we are playing in. I think Benitez likes a forward who can turn defences and get in behind them.

United have done us a massive favour here! Get In!

  • 17 Offkey // May 7, 2016 at 2:18 PM

Hopefully mata’so ex-teammates can help out as well

    Goooaaaalllll

  • 19 Ibizatoon // May 7, 2016 at 2:19 PM

Bobby…Personally, I’d think Perez would do that better than Cisse, plus offer something else.

I think we should keep this up tbh. Surely it’ll lead to Cisse scoring a worldly to prove us all wrong.

Bit odd that Aarons isn’t even on the bench.

    Thanks Man U!

    strange days

  • 21 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 2:22 PM

As i was saying, before mata rudely interrupted me by scoring, Villa are vulnerable to pace and Aarons down one wing, with townsend down the other could’ve brought results. Still, in Rafa we trust. First hurdle looking good – can’t see norwich winning now. One down, two to go. Beat villa, chelsea beat scum and happy days. πŸ˜‰

I wonder if we can convince Mata to join the blog? πŸ™‚

  • 24 WWSBRD // May 7, 2016 at 2:25 PM

If Gini doesnt show up that Villa team then he should walk back to Newcastle

Their fans are not impressed by their team, I honestly dont see the thinking behind it but hey ho lets see what time brings…I dont see Townsend having much issue running at their defense though (also wouldnt be shocked to see a Hutton red card today because no way will he keep up with Sissoko or Townsend if they run at him)

Difficult to tell whether it’s by design or not. Don’t think it is today, just poor. Can’t see the benefit of cutting the time you have to score in by half, when you know a win is needed and GD could be crucial.

  • 143 Bambams // May 7, 2016 at 3:50 PM

Cisse has done nothing other than play a position until Mitrovic comes on.

He got his goal against Liverpool but I don’t remember much else in his 7/8 games.

Sissoko is so frustrating, his final pass is always terrible.

We are just not creating anything.

  • 144 colwell // May 7, 2016 at 3:50 PM

Perhaps these useless cnuts will know the scum are losing and go all out to win a draw is not enough

  • 145 AncientC // May 7, 2016 at 3:51 PM

It should be a very different 2nd half… Rafa’s strategy reminds me of ‘negative splits’ in running, where you run faster in the 2nd half of a race. The opposition should be at their most vulnerable when they are tired.

  • 146 MAUTITOON // May 7, 2016 at 3:51 PM

    bring on ayoze and siem

  • 147 Magtoonpie // May 7, 2016 at 3:52 PM

  • 148 lukes26 // May 7, 2016 at 3:52 PM

i thought before the game this would be a good game to have Shelvey play in…think we’ll see him soon

cisse hasnt done much. i wonder who wins a 100 meter better him and Mitro..I suspect it would be close. announcers keep saying he’s pacey

  • 149 colwell // May 7, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Second half Rafa normally gives us a chance by playing 11 players, takes Cisse off who is fcuking awful again bangs Mitro on. Who knows we may start him one day.

  • 150 Jail for Ashley // May 7, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Not sure what needs to change, Rafa does though and that’s why he’s a top manager. Must have given them a massive boost hearing the mackems result

  • 151 Tsunki // May 7, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Not much happening up the left, villa content to hold on for the draw if they have to. Mitrovic would cause these problems the odd few crosses we put in are causing them problems with defensive positioning but we aren’t exploiting it. I can see the mackems getting a draw and us too.

  • 152 chicousa // May 7, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Cisse’s first touch is as bad as ever and Sussoko’s end product failing. Hope we bring more calmness and better attack in second half. Thank goodness Chelski doing their part!

  • 153 Bobbybee // May 7, 2016 at 3:54 PM

The plan is not to concede and so far so good. We’ll pinch a goal second half and all will be well. πŸ˜‰ Rafa knows what he’s doing more than anyone else. Mitro will come on and hold the ball up and change our pattern. Everything else is going our way. Deep breaths. All will be well. πŸ˜‰

  • 154 TikiTakaAcca // May 7, 2016 at 3:55 PM

Not sure why people are slating Wijnaldum?
He’s not been involved that much because we never attack down our left side because Dummett can’t get forward.
He’s also put in a shift defensively.

People want to look at Townsend. This is why I don’t like him. He’s seen so much of the ball but he just runs into corners and gets tackled everytime.

  • 155 ilovetoon8788 // May 7, 2016 at 3:55 PM

I’d take a shi* half and a magic townsend free kick now.

  • 156 Essex Geordie Bill // May 7, 2016 at 3:57 PM

So long as his master move isn’t to bring Taylor on although after all the stick he’s had in would funny if he scored the winner.

  • 157 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // May 7, 2016 at 3:57 PM

The problem having Sissoko in the middle he does have the odd good game there but in this particular game the space is out wide so he would be better there !

Wijnaldum would be a better option up front than Cisse has pace and a good touch

Should get De Jong , Perez and Mitrovic on as we need to win this

Sunderland have done well but I think they will run out of steam 2nd half and Chelsea will get another 1 or 2 goals

  • 158 Tsunki // May 7, 2016 at 3:58 PM

Ancient – we seem seem have done a lot of containing and letting especially tough opposition do all the running and wear them out before bringing on a thug like mitrovic to hurt them when they are tired. Seems to work though! πŸ™‚

  • 159 JP...from The Rock // May 7, 2016 at 3:59 PM

We just love making things harder for ourselves don’t we? All results are going our way except ours. WE NEED 3 POINTS! Or else we are doomed. If we can’t beat Villa we have no chance against Spurs.

We are taking too long to form attacks and when we are we’re being predictable by always passing it long to Townsend. We need to mix it up and Cisse needs to come off. He offers nothing at all. Wijnaldum had been disappointing also.

I saw this game as a banana skin and I am just praying I am wrong.

    Come on Newcastle!!

  • 160 curmon // May 7, 2016 at 4:00 PM

    sissoko and cisse need dropping

  • 161 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // May 7, 2016 at 4:01 PM

Villa know we are just going to pass it to Townsend so we need to change it up

If Townsend was wide left I think he would terrorise Hutton and someone like Sissoko or Janmaat could go wide right so we can stretch the play and get some crosses into the box

A goal will be all it will take for Villa to crumble we need to get it

  • 162 lukes26 // May 7, 2016 at 4:02 PM

maybe we’ll see sissoko go back to playing LW or Ayoze..something needs to change though

  • 168 Hail Wor Ashley // May 7, 2016 at 4:04 PM

Some feisty types needed. Mitro and Shelvey for Cisse and Gini would be a good move.

Shelvey at least tries to unlock the door when he gets it. Everybody was playing it safe with their passes which became very predictable and Villa had the measure by half-time.

Get Cisse off NOW! Shite! If he isn’t scoring them he isn’t doing anything.

Trusting our bottling bunch to blow hot consistently like they haven’t done for years whilst needing Sunderland who always show fight and stay in games to mess up massively, was always pure delusion.

Crunch game, Villa with nothing to play for and a litany of problems showing more determination than our limp lot until the last 10.

All those fans that thought Mitrovic was awesome when he signed off the back of his record and Youtube, didn’t see that in that crappy league he missed 5 a game before he got 1.

does anybody actually think we have good players though? i see most of the unable to make a 3 yard pass without giving it away.

there are very few i would keep. our players think they can beat people with skill and they cannot, they lose it every time.

drives me mental watching sissoko thinking he will be 5 people, he won’t and doesn’t.

it is too late but somebody should be telling them football is a passing game, skills are not that important.

there is one single reason the other team will stay up and that is defoe. you buy a striker like that and he will score.

what do we have? cisse is rubbish and mitro tries his best but is poor. he has no idea how to hit the target.

if we had defoe today he would have scored.

The most devastating thing is is that there was hope and belief we could stay up, but the players coward out, not at all Rafa’s fault, entirely the players fault for not trying enough and Ashley charnley and Carr for not bringing in the right players, getting Rafa earlier and not signing a proven natural goal scorer (one of the main differences between us going down and Sunderland staying up)

  • 329 SPRINGY // May 7, 2016 at 5:05 PM

  • 330 Ketsbaia9 // May 7, 2016 at 5:06 PM

Townsend was trying too hard today. We’ll not get out of the championship with players like Colback and Dummett. I expect the following players to leave:

    Mbemba
    Anita
    Sissoko
    Siem De Jong
    Wijnaldum
    Townsend
    Shelvey
    Perez
    Mitrovic
    Krul

  • 331 lochinvar // May 7, 2016 at 5:06 PM

    Inept.
Villa were taking the p&ss – no threat to our defence yet we couldn’t work their defence.
Colback will have nightmares over his miss and Mitro could have done better.
Why De Jong and not Shelvey – at least he has attitude
Up to Everton now to win at Roker Park and then Watford to get a draw just leaving us to beat Spurs.
Thanks Chelsea – anyway you can now buy Sissoko but he won’t get Champions League. Shame that.

  • 332 chicousa // May 7, 2016 at 5:07 PM

I think after 53 years watching and supporting the toon this is the worst team ive ever seen, we have seen it all before but people cant blame other clubs for it as we all know the buck stops at the owner and then the monkies down the line of play but its obvious these players do not have any loyalty towards the club and the supporters at all really, the downfall to many French players not enough English players that has done the club in big time mind I will blame carr on everything that has gone on I think a jumped up so called top talent spotter really shouldn’t be running a pro club like he has been I think id be investigating carr and his dodgy dealing in france and Holland and other countries

  • 335 magpie6699 // May 7, 2016 at 5:07 PM

The opinion on here seems to be we should have gone for it all out.
Difficulty is we simply don’t have the players to take on a game like that.
No strikers on form/good enough. No pace in attack.
Like Palace Villa probably set up to relegate us. last week we got the break with a wonder goal.
Should have followed McClarens advice and judged him after 10 games.

  • 371 Very Terry // May 7, 2016 at 5:38 PM

I don’t see our players as lazy, they looked like they tried hard to me, just Villa picked today, after 11 losses in a row?, to give it a go. Ffs. I do see our management as inept and the root of the problem- after the trauma of last season and MA releases funds and gives “the board” free reign they pick Steve F’ing McClaren. “He’s the one for us”. We lost to Portland Timbers reserves in pre-season and the writing was on the wall for all to see but nothing was done about it. You couldn’t make it up. At least we should win a few next season and we won’t have watch Steve with his clipboard and annoying hair-island.
