What Our Players Are Really Thinking In Training Today

12:21 pm, Thursday, May 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 75 Comments

It’s ironic that those players who let the club down by not trying too hard when the games got tough are exactly the same ones who will be talking to their agents to get them out of Newcastle just as quickly ass possible.

It’s sad but true and players like Gini Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko are almost certain to leave Newcastle this summer.

And the training at Benton today should be interesting with players talking about what to do now the gravy train called Newcastle have been relegated.

moussa sissoko

Moussa Sissoko – get me to a club who plays Champions League every season

We would not be at all surprised if these are some of the thinking or comments made at the training ground today:

  • Wonder if Manchester United are really interested in me – tell them I’m interested and available
  • Would leaving the club on Monday look bad?
  • Must rememebr not to talk about my holidays in the dressing room after Tottenham game
  • I never liked the weather here in any case – it’s too dismal
  • Wonder if Spurs would take me back?
  • I’ll stay  – it will look good – and in any case I’m on massive wages here
  • Wonder if that was true that  Juventus want me – I’d go there in a flash – their strips looks so much better than Newcastle’s
  • Never liked Rafa  – he knows too  much and to drop me – well that was a huge mistake
  • I’ll stay here for five years and take the money – I could always fake an injury or two or maybe go on loan now and again?
  • I could always y poor form was because they played me out of position

We’ve heard the comments from striker Luuk de Jong,  that one reason he was a complete and utter failure  (not his words) at Newcastle was that he was played out of position.

Well that was only because he never scored or even had a shot when he played up front as a striker.

Players have a knack of blaming other people or events for their own failures – they don’t take responsibility.

It will be no different at Newcastle this summer, as some of our players queue up to leave the club asap.

Frank de Boer left Ajax. Dreaming too early?

  • 2 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 12, 2016 at 12:27 PM

This is just a rant, Ed. Haway, fella. You can do better. As for LDJ, he was played out of position, in a team that created no chances, so even on the rare time he had up front, he never had a chance. I don’t see the logic in bring him up in all of this. There are plenty of more deserving, current targets.

  • 3 Shadow_Shearer // May 12, 2016 at 12:30 PM

Why fire any non playing staff. Just fire lee charnley. If steve mcclaren had a big hand in getting us relegated, charnley must be held responsible for appointing him, describing him as the “perfect fit”.

Charney has not only got the club relegated, he’s cost his boss over 100 million. How on earth is that not a sack able offence. But I hear if benitez leaves, it will be charnley got to find a replacement. It shows how much of a joke the club is been run by.

I think the what if’s for next season start now.

For me, we should or will get rid of Krul, Colocinni, Taylor, Janmaat, Gini, Sissoko, SDJ, Gouffran, Tiote, Townsend, Cisse, Saivet, Riviere, Doumbia.

Sort of players I’d like us to target: Redmond, Jedinak, Caulker, Rhodes, Gestede, Clark, Barton (unlikely), Dunk, Ince…….

fdb is one of the very few who could take away some of the pain of rafa leaving. I guess we all know in reality it’s agent bruce or some other 3rd rater and business and failure as usual from the chuckle brothers C&C.

    Oof, Ed has gone ultra-cynic!

i bet taylor gets another reprieve too!!! No one seemingly pays for failure at sjp.

  • 8 Our Toon // May 12, 2016 at 12:41 PM

Charnley didn’t get the club relegated, he isn’t the owner, he doesn’t make the decisions as most would like to think he does, he’s a yes man who’s climbed the ranks by kissing ass and saying yes sir. The ultimate yes man who would be nothing but a tea boy at another club. He would be one of the non playing staff that would be losing his job if he was at another club.

Wake up and stop blaming the puppets, Ashley is to blame, always has been and always will be, the rest of them follow him to the hilt

  • 9 roblee7 // May 12, 2016 at 12:41 PM

I can see Colo getting another year extension. In fairness, he was immense in the Championship (7 years ago!). His level I think. Wouldn’t be suprised if Taylor gets another year too, bloody hope not on both mind

  • 10 Bambams // May 12, 2016 at 12:41 PM

Everybody will be hoping Ashley comes out and makes a bold statement…

” We made mistakes and I will change the board, Appoint Rafa and make funds available to get us back up ”

No chance. Charnley will stay as will Carr because to change this will show Ashley made mistakes – he will never admit this by making sackings.

I am just hoping he has had enough and sells up. Hopefully to someone who knows more about football clubs and how to treat fans/employees.

    Won’t hold my breath

Reading the Spanish media is surreal , they put a totally different spin on things.

They are aware of Ronnie Gill’s campaign to get Rafa to stay and the board to be sacked and just cannot get their heads round it.

Their take on it is , Benitez had 10 games to get 30 points and save the Toon , he has got 10 points from a possible 27 and we are relegated , ergo he’s failed – sack him !

Just shows how important a closer view is !

  • 14 Slank // May 12, 2016 at 12:49 PM

Managers live or die by results. Far too often they are not given sufficient time and sufficient resources.

But this cannot be true of McClaren.

If managers live and die by results so should the Chairman / CEO. Charnley should resign as should Carr whose scouting has been one of the key factors in the poor performances of the team.

  • 15 Malackay // May 12, 2016 at 12:50 PM

    JAMSHA –

I hope you’re right about Townsend, but I imagine there will be a host of clubs from 7th downward in the prem who will pay £10m for him with new TV money. No way NUFC turn that down with cheaper players like Aarons in the wings and loss of revenue from relegation.

I hope we keep likes of Lascelles, Mbemba, Ayoze, Colback, etc.

We need to move on from Taylor and Colo but wouldn’t be surprised if we keep one of them and allow Mbemba to leave for c.£5m. That would be very short sighted though.

Guys, I have an old colleague who works at the SD headquarters…MA’s desk supposedly withing spitting distance. Anyone got a formal message I could maybe get my mate to pass on/print out and leave on his desk….!

  • 17 Hail Wor Ashley // May 12, 2016 at 12:52 PM

    Krul – £5m

    Janmaat – £7m
    Saylor – Airdrop into Syria
Colo – Fire out of a cannon into orbit

    Tiote – £5m
    Gouffran – £1m
    Gini – £12m
    Sissoko – £12m
    Saivet – £3m

    Cisse – £3m
    Riviere – Curly Wurly
    Perez – £12m

£60m there. Realistic evaluations given we’re in much better financial shape than most that go down and the previous reputations of some of the bigger names and perceived potential in the likes of Perez.

Even if you say £50m, that’s still enough to rebuild for the Championship.

Or 2 up top with Mitro, though I wouldn’t be sad to see the back of him.

SDJ will either go back to Holland or come to the fore and be made captain.

Might be a bit optimistic in thinking we can keep Townsend given his showing since been here, but no international tournament in 2017 and the fact he won’t get much more money elsewhere might mean he stays put for the time being.

Robertson should be a priority purchase if Hull fail to gain promotion and I suspect we’ll have Steve Bruce in that situation to make it happen. He plays 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 which would be interesting to see.

Bringing back Abeid, Barton and Tavernier would be welcome.

  • 18 shaun83 // May 12, 2016 at 12:52 PM

Repost- Rafa apparently has a three year contract. Putting a relegation release cause in there smelt a bit off anyway but I think he owes it to the club to try and get us back up next season. It’s not like the results have been there since he took over. Sunderland have out performed us. At times big improvement but at times nowhere near good enough, especially first half.

I just hope charnley and co don’t screw up, again!

Yeah but, getting 1pt from Norwich and Sunderland was all part of Rafa’s plan. Bobbybee said so, it must be true.

In 2009, everyone who wanted to go and who there was an offer for, left.
The TV deal in the Championship is £2.5m.
    This is a squeeze…..

  • 22 Nufc-83 // May 12, 2016 at 12:56 PM

Jail/Average what exactly did i get wrong was it stating that the club is sound financially when in fact you consider a loan to the owner of the club a reason for us to be seen as not soundly run (4th worst in prem)? The ashely loan will be paid on sale of the club and not as you say average on demand. Ashely made the mistake of paying off all our external debt while leaving the team without any investment which has ultimately (along with other stupid decisions) put us in the predicament we are now. If we had invested the 80M when we finished 5th do you think we would be in this position?? Ashley has said all along that the club will invest when the club is self sufficient and making a profit (which was too late) but that is the position we are in now as you seen by the investment this year.

Anyway I am not sitting here saying that i want Ashely to stay or he has been good for the club far from it what i am saying is the players and Carr are more deserved of the critcism this season than anyone else at the club. The palyers will go and i hope carr is gone but if not then yes its another mistake in a long line from Ashely.

  • 23 Slank // May 12, 2016 at 12:58 PM

The Spanish are far more ruthless with their managers. The ‘what if’ scenario. If it hadn’t been Benetez but say Tony Pulis would the many fans be not voicing their support for their manager but the head of their manager ?

After all it wasn’t too long ago that ‘In Carr we trust’ was the mantra.

  • 24 Ibizatoon // May 12, 2016 at 1:00 PM

I notice the calls are for people to resign, not be fired.

If we’re to believe a new dawn is possible, does the chief not need to start taking action?

So far it does seem to be a case of business as usual.

BandB…Good job our board know how to deal with financial squeezing. It’s about the only thing they know how to do.

  • 25 Our Toon // May 12, 2016 at 1:02 PM

Krul will go for a lot more, he’s classed as a home grown player so for the clubs in Europe he’ll be massive as a back up. Think we could be looking at 15m.

Obviously some players will need to be shipped out, sissoko, cisse, Janmaat, Gini, cabella, thauvin, saivet are the obvious ones. At least 35m with them

I’d get rid of Shelvey 80k for that bag of shite is ridiculous, loan townsend out but he has a buyout clause of 8m which is a bummer.

As for colo and saylor, we will unfortunately need them next season but at least they’ll be on lower salaries.

The rest we could hold on to but can’t see the likes of mitro etc wanting to stay

Krul might have to stay after a serious injury

  • 26 Malackay // May 12, 2016 at 1:02 PM

I don’t think Rafa stay with us BUT if he does surely it is a no brainer for Ashley to hand complete control of the club to him? He is a football man and knows the game inside out.

No need for Charnley – replace him with an accountant whose only role is to be the FD of the business and has no say in anything. Give Rafa a fixed budget, allow him to have final decision on Moncur, Carr, Beardsley etc. all the way down to youth level. Allow him to bring in his own scouts, coaches, physios. Make him fully accountable sure, but make sure he has total control.

Given him final control on transfers in and out, contracts, media and fans comms strategy.

  • 27 Slank // May 12, 2016 at 1:05 PM

Jamshar (or as my spell checker corrects me Jamjar !)

It’s unlikely (which may be a good thing) that we will be able to attract world class talent once in the Championship. No more ‘I want Champions League football’ being mentioned again.

The players we probably have a better chance than those other Championship clubs in attracting are the cream of our new league and lower leagues.

  • 28 Jib // May 12, 2016 at 1:05 PM

The Everton performance last was strangely evocative of NUFC’s season.
They looked a class apart from Sunderland for the first 15 minutes and I thought “wahay The Toffees are going to win here”
As soon as the unwashed launched their first meaningful assault on Evertons goal the blues asses just went !

  • 29 Jib // May 12, 2016 at 1:07 PM

  • 30 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:10 PM

    Mbabu, Lascelles, Mbemba Dummett
    Roberts, Shelvey, Colback, Aarons
    Mitrovic, Armstrong.
Combine these with incoming players bought with the money raised from Wijnaldum, Townsend, Sissoko, Janmaat etc and you have a side capable of bouncing straight back up, whether we keep Rafa or not. It’s been our so called big players that have let us down, not our kids. Those above will be a lot stronger for this traumatic experience and will suffer no harm from a season in the Championship. Now, all we need is to lose Charnley and Carr – sadly Ashley owns the club and will only go when he finds a buyer – and have a complete shake up of the backroom staff. Until Rafa makes his plans known, there is little point in speculating over his future, or lack of it, with us. Early days yet.

I’d always enjoyed watching martinez teams previously, but that is another clear example of losing the dressing room, a la SM. Don’t know what happened they used to be great to watch.

  • 33 Malackay // May 12, 2016 at 1:14 PM

Bobbybee – I like the team and theory on paper, but in reality there isn’t really a player in that team with any sort of experience in getting out of the Championship and most are under 25. I thnk we’d be making a huge mistake if you don’t bring real seasoned Championship players.

  • 34 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:15 PM

Hail, i said you were a dick. That must be true also. 😉

  • 35 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 12, 2016 at 1:18 PM

    Martinez is one dimensional imo.

Attacking stuff is great, but as soon as it stops working, his teams fold like a bad poker hand. They either win well, or get stuffed.

  • 36 Hail Wor Ashley // May 12, 2016 at 1:19 PM

    Our Toon

Aye he is homegrown, but he’s also coming back from a lengthy injury and will be entering the final year of his contract.

Shelvey needs to be put on an intensive fitness regime, has the talent of a top PL player, but has the stamina and mobility of a lower league journeyman. Bit like Huddlestone in that respect. Maybe a year in the Champ playing every week is what he needs to become a PL level athlete. Either way I can’t see a team willing to give us £10m+ for him and pay him what we are.

I sincerely hope you’re wrong about Saylor and Colo, they’re already 3 years overdue their departures. Mbemba, Lascelles, Dummet and 1 experienced CB brought in will put us in great shape in that position.

Mitro I’m really not sure. Blows hot and cold with his hold-up play and is never going to be a Shearer so he should wave that dream goodbye. Not a natural finisher and not much better with his head.

Much prefer Armstrong with a clever player that will help get the best out of him, like SDJ, supporting him.

    GK: Darlow, Elliot, Woodman

    RB: Anita, Mbabu

    LB: ?????, ?????

    CB: Lascelles, Mbemba, Dummet, ???????

    CM: Shelvey, Colback, ???????, ???????

    RW: Townsend, ???????

    LW: Aarons, Sammy

ST or AM: Armstrong, SDJ, ??????, ??????

£50m on 8 players at least and not a white flag wielding surrender monkey in sight.

  • 37 BandB // May 12, 2016 at 1:20 PM

    You know,

    We’ve just been relegated.
But you can still look at that picture of Charnley with his thumb up and Ashley hugging himself with glee and think….”Well, that’s still the dynamic…
“. a little snap shot that captures the truth about this club
    “Nothing has changed.
    “And no-one cares.”

  • 38 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 12, 2016 at 1:22 PM

That is a decent basis for a championship side (although will we still have mitro and mbemba?). Malakay is right, though, we could do with a hand full of older experienced players to build a championship SQUAD that could get us back up.

  • 39 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Malakay, I thought I’d covered that with incoming players bought with the sales money? We obviously need experience and hopefully we’ll buy that. The Championship isn’t better than the PL. It should hold no fears for our young players who will more than hold their own. Getting the right players isn’t my job, so I can’t decide who comes in, but we can use our muscle to persuade players to come – we’re still an actractive proposition to a lot of players.

Bills, get your arse on this blog and defend this diabolical hiarchy at our famous football club I’ve ate a lot of humble pie u just cannot defend the ludicrous desicions, that this club continually make, managers that should have not been within a million miles of our club, chef execs that are totally incompitant chief scout who is deplorable.

Players with no backbone or heart.

Money spent “yes” but given to the wrong people to spend it 100 per cent, that fool Charnley still at the club that back hander taking scout still at the club, it’s a downright insult what has went on down on Barrack road, man up and hold your hands up, it is indefensible and inexcusable what has happened to our club.

    Explain yourself.

  • 42 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:26 PM

  • 43 Ibizatoon // May 12, 2016 at 1:26 PM

BandB…I’m sure they’ll give themselves a good telling off and then a reassuring arm around the shoulder whilst they plan for next year.

Bobby…Ashley finding a buyer is not the only solution, however, with that in mind, can fans not give him a reason to actively look for a buyer, rather than just sitting on his backside?

    Now relegation is confirmed.

Clear out the losers but make sure we get value.

    Moussa – £12m
    Townsend – £8m
    Cisse – £3m
    Tiote – £3m
    Colo – £1m
    Cabella – £6m
    Thauvin – £5m
    Janmaat – £7m
    Perez – £15m
    Gini – £15

    That’s £75m raised.

    Go buy Robertson at LB
    Redmond at LW
    Ince at RW
    Carrick on a free
    Nahki Wells

  • 45 Hail Wor Ashley // May 12, 2016 at 1:29 PM

Ross MCormack – Fulham’s parachute payments drying up fast and they already posted losses last season that had them placed under a transfer embargo – £10m should get him. 21 goals and 9 assists this season in a struggling team. Proven Champiosnhip ST hitting his peak at 29.

Last 3 season he has 142 appearances with 72 goals in middling to poor Champ teams. Exactly what we need.

  • 46 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:29 PM

YCMIU, Mbemba and Mitro signed long term contracts without bail out clauses, so I imagine they will stay, unless we get silly money offered for them.

Always forget about Tahuvin and Cabella, another £12m with those sales.

We’re gonna have 1 shot at the Champ where we’ll have a very big advantage in terms of finances due to our sales and initial parachute payments. Carr and Charnley cannot be in charge of it.

Hibbett, agree marra, Rafa will let us know asap, he has no reason to delay and will want this sorting either way quickly. I think he might stay, but am prepared for him to leave. It’s a no brainer for Ashley to hand the club lock stock and barrel over to Rafa to restructure as he sees fit. Not that that means he will, but that’s Ashley.

  • 54 Malackay // May 12, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Bobbybee – Fair enough, as I say, that was a good side on paper but we all seem to agree much more experience is needed to compete in this league.

The championship may not be as quality as the premiership but it will be a much longer (more cup and league games in shorter period of time) and tougher season which young players may struggle with both mentally and physically. Also, they’ll undoubtedly get the rough treatment from a lot of teams as we will be a huge scalp for teams.

Also, if Rafa stays, I don’t think it would do him any harm getting someone on his coaching staff who knows the league. Just as important staff understand the league as the players.

  • 55 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 12, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Yeah i know you were not saying those 11 were enough. Was just adding to the conversation really about the players we buy being experienced.

Thats good news about mitro, and especially mbemba. Him and lascelles could be a strong partnership.

And is that true about Martinez? Not entirely surprising.

  • 56 dok - the horrid colonial // May 12, 2016 at 1:36 PM

mitro may fare well for us next season, get his touch better in the championship, remember the lads only 21… but id say keep our core of young players, the hungry ones… lascells, mitro, mbabu, and bring arma on…

We live in a world where Raheem Sterling costs 45m and Jonjo Shelvey costs 12m plus his 80k salary… 15m for krul would be the going price. We will be getting 20m or 30m in parachute payments along with 10m for playing in championship. Whole changes not needed.

  • 62 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:41 PM

Ibiza, are you not aware that Ashley is looking for a buyer, and has been for some time? He’s invested a lot of money into the club whether we like that or not and calling him names is not going to get rid of him any sooner. It’s a business and he will sell it when he gets the right offer. He knows already what we feel about him, we’ve made it plain enough, but the hard reality is he will only go when he gets the right offer. He doesn’t care what we think. Have you not worked that out yet? If you think he will walk away because we call him more names, after the money it’s cost him, then you ain’t in Ibiza, you’re on cloud cuckoo labd! 😉

Barton and Carrick both available on frees. Would be great if we could get both to go with Shelvey and Colback, however I can’t see any reason why Barton won’t be at Burnley given his vital role in their promotion, plus his past here means it’ll always be stretching the imagination to see him back.

Carrick will have offers from a lot of PL clubs and despite being from the area, he’s never come across as dyed in wool Geordie, or ever expressed any affinity for the area, so again, can’t see it. Would be a great signing though.

It is ironic that when the club spends more money in one window than ever before , we have also one of the worst seasons on record.

Ashley allowed Charnley and Carr to appoint McClaren and sign those players. McClaren convinced Charnley that things were on track but more time was required and Charnley convinced Ashley the same. That’s the stupid leading the blind leading the delegator.

None of them could ever accept that relegation was a possibility in fact the word was not allowed to be used. Weak leadership across the board is to blame and as Freddie Shepherd said this morning a fish rots from the head down.
Unless Ashley sells which is unlikely then the only way forward is to employ an experienced manager with a successful CV, backed up by an active club chairman with a knowledge of football who will compliment the manager.
The coming days will tell us if there is any ambition in our owner or is he going to continue as a failure and a loser.
Come on Mike you know now what needs to be done. Just do it.

Everton would appear the perfect choice for Benetez. New owners with big injection of cash, some world class players, in the Premier League and possibly more importantly for him and his family he lives locally and knows the area and its people.

If Everton come calling I doubt he will turn them down.

    Taxi for Rafa ?

Anything less (interested party with 200m at dubai) Ashley won’t even want to see you face.

Ashley is the only one that could make Rafa stays.

    ..but he has no intention.

FDB has expressed interest in the everyon job already. Koeman and pellegrini also linked

    Everyone??? *Everton

Rafa is way out on the betting

  • 71 Bobbybee // May 12, 2016 at 1:50 PM

With Rafa’s Liverpool connections, why oh why would he go to Everton? How long would his relationship with Liverpool last if he did that? In his eyes, Everton’s a small club anyway! 😉 Seriously though, I think we can safely write off Everton as a destination for Rafa.

Slank…Not to be rude, but I don”t care what Everton do next, was only pointing out that clubs apparently do act quickly when they recognise someone isn’t doing the job they were hired for. Meanwhile at Newcastle…

Bobby…I don’t believe I suggested we call him names. I didn’t actually suggest ahy particular action, nor do I plan to. Merely opening a dialogue to discuss our options (of which there are likely a fair few).

Ashley has been looking for a buyer for some time? I’m not aware. In fact, didn’t they come out just over a year to go to say it categorically wasn’t for sale (at any price I believe)?

He’s invested money. So have you and other fans. Yes, it’s his call ultimately, all I’ve suggested is we try and make him factor in people like you when making decisions.

Does he know what we think of him? I don’t. I think he thinks we like a good whinge and then we’ll just go with the flow. Hard to argue with really.

Of course he cares. That myth was blown out of the water following the hiring of Keith Bishop and the PR overdrive that has followed.

If Ashley wanted a good experience manager. He would have already got it…but he doesn’t.

..ALL THIS YEARS..Don’t tell me Ashley don’t have the time to get a decent manager? And when 1 finally turn up…wont you want to sign him up for LONG…LONG…LONG Term???

Simple. He CLEARLY Don’t have the intention to Sign Rafa up.

Or do you think we should ask Rafa to beg Ashley for him to stay instate? (Maybe some on here would think this way around)

    The Best Time is NOW.

Gives Ashley some stick…you will be in “Ashley Trap” if you think not and all that.

Remember he will not Sell! (400m or No Deal)

  • 75 davis_toons // May 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM

Player are easy to sell and let go but Quality Managers will be hard to find.
