Newcastle Make Three Changes For Tottenham

2:02 pm, Sunday, May 15th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 164 Comments

Rafa Benitez has just announced the Newcastle team today for what could his final game in charge of Newcastle United, as we host Tottenham Hotspur in our final Premier League game for at least 15 months, after we were relegated last Wednesday night.

Teams:

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Chancel Mbemba, Paul Dummett; Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback; Andros Townsend, Moussa Sissoko (c), Georginio Wijnaldum; Aleksandar Mitrovic
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Jamie Sterry, Jonjo Shelvey, Siem de Jong, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez, Papiss Cisse

Tottenham Hotspur (4-2-3-1): Hugo Lloris (c); Kyle Walker, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Ben Davies; Eric Dier, Ryan Mason; Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son; Harry Kane
Substitutes: Michel Vorm, Danny Rose, Kevin Wimmer, Tom Carroll, Nacer Chadli, Josh Onomah, Clinton N’Jie

Referee: Anthony Taylor (Greater Manchester)

It looks Vernon Anita is injured so back comes Daryl Janmaat at right back, after he has recovered from a groin injury and he will wear a splint on the hand he smashed into the dressing room wall at Southampton at half time.

Steven Taylor comes back for perhaps his last game ever for Newcastle at center-back and Jermain Lascelles was sent home sick from training yesterday and he’s not even on the bench.

Steven may find it hard to contain Harry Kane and he will have to play a lot better than his last time out at Southampton when he was withdrawn at half time in what was at the time thought to be his last game for the Magpies.

The final change is that Aleksandar Mitrovic comes in for Papiss Cisse who is on the bench.

This could be the final games of their careers at Newcastle for Janmaat, Taylor, Tiote, Townsend, Sissoko and Wijnaldum today.

Tottenham are second top of the league and a draw would ensure they finish higher than Arsenal for the first time ever in the Premier League so they have something riding on this – Newcastle don’t other than for our lads to be professional a season when most of the have massively under-performed for the club.

If we can win this game today this would be our first double of the season after we tore Spurs apart 2-1 at White Hart Lane – but the 3 points would come too late as we are already relegated.

🙂

This is what Rafa Benitez has said about the game today:

“We know Tottenham are a good team who have done well this season.” “They will try to finish second. But we’re trying to win.”

“You can’t guarantee anything, especially in the last game and what happened on Wednesday.” “The players have trained well in the last few days. And we are trying to give something back to our fans.”

More than half the Newcastle fans think we will lose this game today.

Our toon he has had two serious injuries give the lad a chance for Christ sake could it not be down to bad look? if he was 24 with the same number of games I would be worried!!

  • 7 rozehnal // May 15, 2016 at 2:14 PM

We should be win this game. Benitez hopefully to stay because of the reception he will receive and Townsend deserves a good reception too, only player in my eyes that has given 100%, hope he scores today.

3 Nil to the Toon Mitrovic 2 and Townsend 1

  • 8 anthc // May 15, 2016 at 2:15 PM

Yes Steven Taylor what a joke. Obviously his swansong hopefully although being a cockney he’ll probably get another year. With him in the team that’s a defeat coming our way!!
Also daryl janmaat another who couldn’t care less. Rafa must be putting him in the shop window to get rid of him hopefully along with a few other of the starting 11.

  • 9 Our Toon // May 15, 2016 at 2:18 PM

    Nufc 83

Did he not have injuries last season as well?

  • 10 Jib // May 15, 2016 at 2:20 PM

Reading between the lines , Jamaal has told a few home truths to some of the w@nkers (we know who they are) he knows won’t be here next season .
For the sake of unity in a meaningless game Rafa has separated him from todays events.
    I wouldn’t like a slap off him

  • 11 anthc // May 15, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Have to agree with our toonabout about aarons. I think is is heavily overrated after less than half a dozen decent performances. God help his body when he gets older! No use being the best talent in the treatment room.

  • 12 BeeGuy // May 15, 2016 at 2:21 PM

Colbeck will have given up by minute 2. Taylor will flounder. JanMaat will look disgusted. Mitro will never see the ball. Sissiko and Winni willbe in the wrong place at the right time. Tiote will get a card. No one will pass to Dummitt. It is all so sad.

  • 13 bettyswallocks // May 15, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Jail……. Thanks for the update. I’m sure you’ll agree it ‘s prudent to notify someone of your movements for security/ health and safety reasons. Be careful and enjoy your day.

  • 14 Essex Geordie Bill // May 15, 2016 at 2:28 PM

I think it’ll be a miracle if we win this game, I can see Spurs slicing though a static defense like a hot knife though butter. Be nice to be wrong bur as I said to a friend, who is a Spurs fan, the season ended last week as far as I am concerned, roll on next season!!!

  • 15 Ron Knee // May 15, 2016 at 2:31 PM

    EGB

If we can survive the first ten minutes without conceding it’ll be a miracle!

  • 16 bettyswallocks // May 15, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Jib……. Was it the telling of the home truths that made him ill?

  • 17 Essex Geordie Bill // May 15, 2016 at 2:38 PM

Frankly I cannot see how anyone can say Aarons is overrated, or for that matter underrated. He hasn’t had enough injury free on field time to make that sort of comment either way.

  • 18 MacToon // May 15, 2016 at 2:47 PM

Old Trafford evacuated due to an “incident”

Going to be one of those days! Can’t believe I’m going to watch the likes of Taylor and captain fantastic Sissoko again.

Possible 45 minute delay to all games?

  • 20 Bambams // May 15, 2016 at 2:55 PM

    We are worried…..

  • 21 Mag52 // May 15, 2016 at 3:00 PM

This would be the game for the home fans to show their disgust at how Ashley and his cronies have led us to this ignominious relegation.
However, we’ll have plenty of occasions to do this in the future if Rafa leaves.
Today is the day we must show to Rafa Benitez just what it means to NUFC fans to keep him at our club for at least another season.
No matter what the result, a wall of sound in support of our manager is the absolute priority for today.

  • 22 davetoon // May 15, 2016 at 3:03 PM

  • 23 Jib // May 15, 2016 at 3:03 PM

The last time I recall a player being sent home ill from training on a Friday – it was Steve Taylor when Andy C broke his jaw after an argument over a bewer !

  • 25 toon kk // May 15, 2016 at 3:05 PM

Steven Taylor can only be given a game to say goodbye and good riddance.
Good job we’re not relying on him to save us.

  • 50 swemag // May 15, 2016 at 3:47 PM

    Good to see some fight.
Good to see some players caring.
Sad to see what could have been.

Use next year to get Armstrong, Aarons, Darlow and Lascelles cemented in the team.

Don’t seel Townsend, loan him one year to some foreign club.

Rafa stays, we are in Europe in three years.

  • 51 davetoon // May 15, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Dont think it wouldve mattered if we won last week anyway

  • 52 Hail Wor Ashley // May 15, 2016 at 3:48 PM

An half that perfectly demonstrates we have assembled a bunch of talented bottlers. Mentality more important than ability.

  • 53 ilovetoon8788 // May 15, 2016 at 3:50 PM

This lot simply couldn’t play with pressure. Once pressure is off they are OK. Mclaren was simply shi*..

  • 54 davetoon // May 15, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Well if Ashley and the clown cant get Rafa to stay now there will be hell to pay.

  • 55 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // May 15, 2016 at 3:54 PM

Wow, where would we be if we got Rafa when he was sacked? Look how we play under no pressure, how the hell did Mcclaren make us look so poor. Why the hell did we get Mcclaren? Baffles me so much.

  • 56 AncientC // May 15, 2016 at 3:55 PM

Another half like that, and it may just swing Benitez’s decision in favour of staying. The club should offer to allow Benitez to take the Spain job if Spain want him, it wouldn’t take up huge amounts of his time, and he could dictate to his coaching staff during periods he would be away.

  • 57 Ron Knee // May 15, 2016 at 3:55 PM

This team continues to confound me. I thought we’d get demolished. To get angry when your team is playing well. How weird is that?

  • 58 chicousa // May 15, 2016 at 3:56 PM

Spurs are asking themselves, “who ARE those guys?”. Toon fans asking the same thing….fantastic first half. Where has this team been all season? The cynic in me is thinking quite a few players are putting themselves in the shop window and a ticket out of the Champioship!

  • 59 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 3:58 PM

Some of these players …Townsend, Mitrovic, Wijnaldum and Mbemba….owe us and Rafa to come out straight after this match and say “I will stay if the boss is staying.”

  • 60 JamesToon // May 15, 2016 at 3:59 PM

So the players finally turn up and play their best performance all season, creating chances, dynamic football, tight defence, good pressing, fight, shame it’s all too late, should have been putting in performances like this all season. Convenient that sissoko and Wijnaldum suddenly putting in performances…put themselves in the shop window.

    PLEASE STAY RAFA

  • 63 firebug666 // May 15, 2016 at 4:01 PM

This team would never have been relegated if Rafa had been given more time to work with them. I think that given our relegation and under McClaren we would have just given up.

Rafa must stay, and if he does we will be back in the prem at the end of next season. With players who have this passion and desire for the game.

Today we have nothing but pride to play for, and Rafa has given the team that pride, for the first time this season we are seeing a team that is playing for each other, a team that has desire, and a team that is showing us pride.

More of the same second half will do nicely thank you.

  • 64 lukes26 // May 15, 2016 at 4:03 PM

i dont think efforts been the problem this season

i just think injuries took a huge toll. particularly in CM and fullbacks

also, carr let us down in a big way this year. more so than previous years

  • 65 davetoon // May 15, 2016 at 4:03 PM

    Very sad really.

  • 122 Cool Hand Luke // May 15, 2016 at 4:44 PM

Im happy for Townsend though, he pus a shift in every game. I wish him well wherever he ends up.

  • 123 lukes26 // May 15, 2016 at 4:45 PM

    Lolllllll!!! amazing

  • 124 Bambams // May 15, 2016 at 4:46 PM

I will NEVER understand our club

  • 125 NoahJ // May 15, 2016 at 4:46 PM

we need to keep aarons. he will start for us next season

  • 126 lukes26 // May 15, 2016 at 4:46 PM

Are our players putting themselves in the shop window.

  • 129 WheresSholaNow // May 15, 2016 at 4:49 PM

Is it wrong that I’m more angry today than happy? Complete joke where have these players been?!

  • 130 Jib // May 15, 2016 at 4:50 PM

Hail Wor Ashley // May 15, 2016 at 4:26 PM

We’ll lose this now. Spurs were already getting on top and we were showing signs of frailty.

    😀

  • 131 Sir Braveheart // May 15, 2016 at 4:50 PM

    What. The. Flock.

    ????

How much have I had to drink??

  • 132 lukes26 // May 15, 2016 at 4:51 PM

this is a greek tragedy. we finally get the players and manager needed for success & we get relegated

  • 133 Hail Wor Ashley // May 15, 2016 at 4:51 PM

No pressure, players (apart from Mitrovic) playing with smiles on their faces and we win 5-1.

    Baffling.

  • 134 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 4:51 PM

This club is a basket case.

  • 135 Hail Wor Ashley // May 15, 2016 at 4:53 PM

    Jib

Yup, couldn’t have been more wrong. Spurs were getting on top before the dismissal, then THEY capitulated.

Possibly the strangest match and atmosphere I’ve witnessed.

  • 136 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 4:53 PM

If EVER there was a fork in the road, this moment is it.
    What to you do Mike?.
Do you go with it? Believe in it?
Or do you start packing away?

  • 137 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 4:54 PM

    I am demand the DVD!

  • 138 clinath@ed // May 15, 2016 at 4:54 PM

Lost for words. Wife just told me to have a season off, to watch my blood pressure….as if I have a choice.

  • 139 MacToon // May 15, 2016 at 4:54 PM

Very sad end to the season and the comment about Mitro earlier was maybe not as bad nor as disgraceful as the leg-breaker tackle, but still nonetheless uncalled for.

  • 140 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 4:54 PM

    I demand the DVD!
    fcuk fingers 🙁

  • 141 rhandy // May 15, 2016 at 4:55 PM

    Unreal.

Three goals against a top three team while a man down. Couldn’t get a point from AV.

  • 142 Thump // May 15, 2016 at 4:55 PM

    Well, that’s Newcastle for you.

  • 143 toon kk // May 15, 2016 at 4:55 PM

What a shame we’re going down, went out with a bang though.

  • 144 MacToon // May 15, 2016 at 4:56 PM

All smiles as we wave goodbye….. unbelievable.

  • 145 manxpie // May 15, 2016 at 4:57 PM

    Very strange they’re all smiling

  • 146 swemag // May 15, 2016 at 4:58 PM

    Must repeat.

Use next season to get Aarons, Lascelles, Darlow and Armstrong cemented in the team. Hopefully Mbemba stays and we have a strong backbone for years to come.

  • 147 clinath@ed // May 15, 2016 at 4:59 PM

Rafa blanked mitrovic and cool towards sissoko

  • 148 2_goal_tino // May 15, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Looks like after today’s game is the first time the players have realised what is happening. Janmaat, Sissoko and Wijnaldum all look like they can’t believe it. Colback and Dummett crying.

  • 149 davetoon // May 15, 2016 at 5:00 PM

Swear I saw Townsend telling Rafa he had to stay and pointing at the crowd

  • 150 Ketsbaia9 // May 15, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Lol if we would’ve beaten Sunderland 2-1, we would’ve stayed up. 1 goal has cost us.

  • 151 firebug666 // May 15, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Only one phrase it worthy of today………

    Too little Too late!

  • 152 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 15, 2016 at 5:02 PM

Nice to see our Big Time Charlies putting themselves in the shop window…

    Gutless. Spineless. Disgraceful.

Precursor to dominating the Championship? Not on your life.

  • 153 BandB // May 15, 2016 at 5:03 PM

Very shrewd of Rafa to deny Wijnaldum a chance to sign off with a hat trick and curtail Sissoko’s shop-window display once the game was safe.
I’ve rarely seen Jaanmat try harder either.

  • 154 Bambams // May 15, 2016 at 5:03 PM

I don’t think Mitro will be here next season. If Rafa stays I simply do not think he is good enough for Rafa to take the risk or more red cards.

The way Mitro stared at the ref was stupid.

I like him but we can’t carry anyone

  • 155 toon kk // May 15, 2016 at 5:04 PM

    Firebug
Very true phrase, to little to late.

  • 156 MacToon // May 15, 2016 at 5:04 PM

Howay Ruddy, you can’t come on here spoiling the mood. We just beat Spurs 5-1!

  • 157 chicousa // May 15, 2016 at 5:06 PM

I love Mitro, but that red card was bad. Other than that a great performance all around! Especially from the fans! HWTF!!! Stay, Rafa, Stay!!!

  • 158 toon kk // May 15, 2016 at 5:07 PM

One thing, we’ll always be remembered for our stylish departure from the premier league.
Just hope for a quick return, with Rafa.

  • 159 catchy in norway // May 15, 2016 at 5:08 PM

can you believe it, 5-1 , I say 5 ffffing 1. and a double over Spuds to boot, so sad,

got to say well done to Sunderland, they wanted it more than us, but to be fair, if rafa had the time Sam had, im more than sure he would have had us safe a long time ago.

    have a safe summer everyone

  • 160 Ketsbaia9 // May 15, 2016 at 5:09 PM

Don’t think Mitrovic should’ve been sent off. Looked a fair challenge. Can see why he was complaining.

  • 161 Thump // May 15, 2016 at 5:11 PM

Ah, Kets. Always fishing for the bite.

  • 162 qtoon // May 15, 2016 at 5:11 PM

We need to sign up Rolando Aarons as a priority. No doubt Sissoko wants to leave. Wijnaldum is too good for the Championship. But two genuine wingers in Townsend and Aarons with pace and the ability to create and score goals would be awesome.

We still have some really talented young players (Mitro, Perez, Armstrong, Mbemba, Lascelles) if we can keep them together under Rafa we can really have a good go at the Championship.

Coloccini needs to go. Our defence has been hugely better without him and he isn’t captain material. If Janmaat goes, Mbabu is a more than capable replacement. A few signings with physicality and experience with the cash from Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Cisse, Tiote, Riviere (if anyone will buy him), and freed up wages from Colocini, Obertan, Marveaux and we’ll be rocking. In Rafa we trust?

  • 163 Hail Wor Ashley // May 15, 2016 at 5:11 PM

Think when the dust settles, feeling cheated by the players will be the lasting impression.

Standing ovation and smiles all round for the same lot that put us in this position.

If Rafa doesn’t stay, this will go down as the most major opportunity missed in NUFC history.

Sign him up a month earlier and we would be possibly preparing for take-off now.

Needs a better word, ambivalent doesn’t do it justice.

  • 164 Jib // May 15, 2016 at 5:13 PM

    Ha ha ha
The Prem will miss us more than we miss them.
2016/17 will be another 100 pointer season
