Ashley Holds Two Hour Positive Meeting With Benitez

2:42 pm, Monday, May 16th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

Peter Graves of Sky Sports is reporting the meeting last night with Mike Ashley, Lee Charnley and Rafa Benitez lasted for two hours.

A smiling Rafa Benitez – after the game yesterday

The meeting took place in the Newcastle Boardroom at St. James’ Park and it does seem positive that Lee Charnley has continued meeting with Rafa today.

It seems like they are trying to tie down Rafa to a deal as soon as possible.

We hope that’s true because that’s exactly what they should be doing – it’s case of strike when the iron is hot.

Newcastle cannot screw this one up.

It would be a crime against (Geordie) humanity if they cannot get this deal completed – and quickly too.

    Toothwhistle Carr Out!

    Ex – Legend Moncur Ou..er……

    Whatever.

  • 4 Tsunki // May 16, 2016 at 2:47 PM

That last line, Ed – I have a theory, based on ten years track record…..

I think, out of the prem jobs potentially available, none would really appeal to rafa.

I think there is only one job he would knock us back for….Spain. I think they will want to line up Del Bosques replacement before the euros, so they can slot straight in after the tournament. Raffa surely has a shout at it. It’s probably the only job that would not p1ss me off if he took it. He has basically been and done everything else. Just my thoughts on it.

  • 6 Tsunki // May 16, 2016 at 2:50 PM

One hour of it would be Rafa shaking his head and saying –

“You let Charnley make overriding football decisions? Charnley? Charnley???”

  • 7 Jail for Ashley // May 16, 2016 at 2:51 PM

    Slank,
From early this morning, on the contrary, Rafa can make any reasonable demands he wants, he is not applying for the job we are applying to him, if one of his demands is having Lee Charnley isolated from any footballing decisions then so be it !

    Tsunki,
    Whoa spooky

  • 9 Tsunki // May 16, 2016 at 2:52 PM

Tbf griffing off your national side for championship hopefuls with the contenders for worst board of a PL Club would seem a bit suicidal.

  • 10 Tsunki // May 16, 2016 at 2:54 PM

I think it’s the consensus Jail. The Pencil Sharpening Wheezy Fat Kid has to get back in the copier room.

  • 11 Tsunki // May 16, 2016 at 2:54 PM

Sorry Lee, I forgot to add – No Offence…

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // May 16, 2016 at 2:54 PM

    Slank,
In fact I stand by that as one of the first demands he should make as having Lee Charnley decide that Thauvin is worth 13M yet Kone is not worth 5M is why we’re in the mess we are in right now, or at least a good part of it!

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // May 16, 2016 at 2:56 PM

    Tsunki,
Not according to Tory man Slank, Lee is the boss and Rafa should do as he’s told or he might not get the job.
    Seriously.
    Around 07 00 this morning.

I think standing by Wally “judge me after an infinite and unspecified number of games, cup bow-outs and Division drops” McCardew gets well up into the top five mind.

just hope this is sorted sooner rather than later
if Rafa is staying great if not he needs to say
chumlee wont have a plan B it will be back to the drawing board and another month going through the 80 applicants

Moncurs time on the board is coming to a natural end

  • 16 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 16, 2016 at 2:58 PM

    Tsunki

Yeah, thats pretty much how I see it. Appart from them, i can’t see him wanting to go anywhere else. Back to Madrid? An Italian club? Mid table Prem club? I dont think he would be interested in old stuff. The Toom challenge is something new.

Jail brb taking a peek now….

  • 18 Jail for Ashley // May 16, 2016 at 3:00 PM

    hibbitt,
It’s going to take at least a week I think, Rafa knowing Ashley will want this contract so watertight that you could smuggle it out of Shirebrook in your underpants.

  • 19 JW1992 // May 16, 2016 at 3:04 PM

Bit off topic but whats the situation with Rolando Aarons contract, watched the sky highlights and they said it could be his last appearance, when does his contract expire? i thought it was next year

  • 20 lesh // May 16, 2016 at 3:10 PM

No doubt Rafa and Ashley have agreed on key principles leaving Charmless to discuss details, which will no doubt focus on Rafa’s role and his part in the unfit for purpose operating structure. That’s likely to be the stumbling block as the board model was Charnley’s. He is potentially under threat if he screws it up.

Were I in Ashley’s shoes, I’d feel inclined to remove Charmless from his MD role as and at the very least, he seems to have little or no idea about respecting his colleagues, listening and accepting their wisdom and advice. He’s an arrogant megalomaniac who hides behind his title and whether Rafa’d put up with that’s questionable.

Again, if I were Ashley, I wouldn’t trust Charmless to run an errand let alone lead Newcastle United to becoming an ambitious, successful club.

Surely churners only task at these meetings is to supply the fig rolls?

  • 22 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 16, 2016 at 3:18 PM

Although even that might be beyond him.

    “Lee, these are rich tea”.
“Sorry, i couldn’t get fig rolls over the line, so this is nearly the same….isn’t it?”

  • 23 dok - the horrid colonial // May 16, 2016 at 3:29 PM

Lee’s only advice should be how to teach rafa to shave his head clean, if he ever decides too, and even then hed screw that up…

  • 24 AndyMac // May 16, 2016 at 3:30 PM

“Newcastle cannot screw this one up”

Altogether now “Oh yes they can”.

  • 25 hibbitt // May 16, 2016 at 3:34 PM

    Jail for Ashley

i think Rafa will have a legal team who are aware of what has gone on in the past and will be covering all bases nothing will be signed till they are happy the contract is watertight and Rafa is covered for every eventuality
its not just us that know Ashley and his reputation

  • 26 TacoFlavoredKisses ForMyBen-arfa // May 16, 2016 at 3:37 PM

i think this actually sets up pretty nice for mike. He gives everything over to Rafa who acts as Manager and GM(behind the sceenes) and penfold gets to keep his job but as a figurehead only. Rafa has total control. win win win

    YCMIU
Tell us another Charnley and the biscuits joke .
They are really funny and original.
    I never tire of them.
    😎

  • 28 Jib // May 16, 2016 at 3:50 PM

    YCMIU
    Go on tell it again
This time you could switch the rich tea and the figrolls around.
    That would work
    It may even be funnier
    Go on
    😎

  • 29 Jib // May 16, 2016 at 3:51 PM

    Go on go on

  • 30 Moonraker15 // May 16, 2016 at 4:00 PM

At the end of the day there’s only about 5 clubs bigger than us in England even when we’re in the Skybet or whatever it’s called nowadays. Rafa stays but demands we get rid of Wonga! Charmless makes an excellent espresso so he can stay! Moncur can stay if he stops talking about 1969 and Carr is Rafa’s new dog walker! Happy days!

  • 31 goommy // May 16, 2016 at 4:41 PM

It’s ok. LC was kind of “Ok, we will do as you say”. So he will accept everything Rafa offer. XD

  • 32 microbar // May 16, 2016 at 4:41 PM

For Fruck sake mike dont leave this in charnleys hands.
    He will fruck it up.
