Townsend Not Moving To Sporting Lisbon

4:38 pm, Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 35 Comments

There’s a report from ESPN today that sources close to Newcastle winger Andros Townsend have said the report in the Portuguese Dailey Record that he has traveled to Lisbon and may even be having a medical today before signing on at the top Portuguese club is simply not true.

Andros is not in Portugal.

Don’t go to Portugal son

However, there are still concerns among Newcastle fans that Townsend may leave the club this summer, with a reported £8M release clause in his contract, after Newcastle signed him for £12M from Spurs in January.

There seems something wrong – even for Newcastle – to put a clause in a contract that could see them lose £4M in a short six months.

But Newcastle can never be accused of being a well-run club – well not up to this point.

But if Rafa Benitez signs on as expected later this week as the Newcastle manager with carte blanche, that could all change very quickly.

Andros has been in great form for Newcatsle, especially since Rafa appeared on the scene on March 11th – and Townsend has been a real star performer for the Magpies.

Because of that excellent form Andros made the England 26 man squad preparing for the Euro 2016 Tournament in France next month.

Not only has Townsend scored four great goals for us, but he runs at the defense and he works hard in tracking back to help out the defense.

He’s looking more and more like a complete player in the last few games for Newcatsle in the season just passed.

However, Newcastle – even with the heroics of Andros – couldn’t avoid a second relegation in just seven years.

Comments welcome.

“…because I just realised I jumped the gun and posted up a rag spoof as fact, oops”

  • 2 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 4:41 PM

    Sorry Ed ha ha 😀

There will of course be World Cup qualifiers to play at the back end of the year. If Hodgeson is willing to select players from a lower division who play every week, then Townsend might still stay. It would understandably worry him if other players have a full season of quals to freeze him out of the side.

  • 4 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 4:42 PM

Europe Out! Or In!, whichever way you prefer.

  • 5 Hail Wor Ashley // May 24, 2016 at 4:43 PM

This supposed clause is just another fabrication that has been repeated often enough to now become the truth. No substance behind the claim.

  • 6 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 4:46 PM

I remember when we were just an island off the coast of Europe, and weren’t actually IN Europe. It did us alright in the 1940’s though. 😐

But then Edward Heath signed a bit of paper with that bloke off day of the jackal and suddenly ice cream doubled in price. That was my depth of understanding of economics back then. Nothings changed much I have to admit.

  • 7 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 4:47 PM

Hail so you’re saying the Relegation Clause is the same as his brother, Santa?

  • 8 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 4:48 PM

Well I think I’ve done enough damage for now…

  • 9 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 4:49 PM

    Tsunki, that’s “better”. 😉

Hail, it does seem to be a bizarre clause if it is true. Has it actually been confirmed, by anybody at the club or in Townsend’s camp? Surely any get out clause has to benefit both sides, and this one doesn’t!

    Apologies Repost.
    Mister Tuff // May 24, 2016 at 4:49 PM

See there is a story doing the rounds that Wally Brolly has been knocked back by Cardiff and Rotherham. Clearly they have better assessments of managerial candidates than Penfold and Mr. Tubbs – and some folk on here who were giving it large about Wally Brolly – Wally is the man, Wally will save us, Maccas Bwave New World.
Talk about swapping horses – you all should reveal why from backing Wally you now back Rafa.
Yee kna who yees are – noo stop practicing the King Percy Goal Dance and explain yasells.

Trust me, there is no way Andros Townsend is leaving NUFC for any club at £8million – NO CHANCE

  • 12 Mister Tuff // May 24, 2016 at 5:01 PM

Couple of folk getting mixed up about the origins of the Townsend story.
It is from the Portuguese paper “Record” and nothing to do with any UK papers.

  • 13 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 5:09 PM

I think it’s one of those papers that come pre-puncjed with a hole in the corner for the string. Mystery how Ed jumped on it as fact though, then go to do a retraction article to follow. Oh…wait…no no, it’s not a mystery. 🙂

    Sorry Ed. Again. 🙂

  • 14 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 5:09 PM

    Pre punched. Doh

  • 15 Tsunki // May 24, 2016 at 5:15 PM

I can imagine occasions where you might want to leave a line out of your CV about a former unfortunate bout of employment. Like a bad tatey picking week where you let the farmers tractor tyres down for not paying you enough, or free paper delivery round where you stuffed the whole bundle in a bin, but imagine having to magic marker out a whole season managing a PL club? Sheeeesh. 😐

  • 16 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 5:16 PM

Wow! UFO landed on the whitehouse lawn!

Let me check that…. oh no, it hasn’t. 😉

  • 17 reilly // May 24, 2016 at 5:19 PM

this all started on twitter by a makem called doglayer.
he posted a pic of townsend at the airport and then 1 on the plane saying he was on a flight to lisbon with his mate.
a little bit of digging on the internet would of saved you the hassle of 2 threads.

  • 18 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:24 PM

Wally had done well elsewhere in the past. Even though he hadn’t done so well recently, he had a decent enough cv to warrant a chance. I was willing to give him a chance, saying “if a non-english manager had the same cv, everyone would be screaming for him”(this isnt the same as ‘maccas bwave new world’ whatever that is). It should have been clear by xmas, however, as it was to most on here, that any usefulness he once had was gone. If he had been replaced in january, when rafa first came available, then maybe we would not be in this predicament

  • 19 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:27 PM

There was also a picture of a bloke holding up a sign (a very scary looking bloke) that said “Townsend, Andrew”…. so unless they were waiting for the rubish commentator, the spectacularly fu€ked that up 😀

  • 20 reilly // May 24, 2016 at 5:29 PM

    aye a seen that 1 😆
the pic of townsend on the plane was doing the rounds when we were linked with him.

  • 21 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 5:30 PM

YCMIU, most fans are prepared to back the manager, regardless of who it is. It’s what we do. Everyone deserves a chance and we gave him one. He blew that chance. It’s only an issue for someone looking for a row, so much that he reposted it, after everyone ignored it first time round. 😉

  • 22 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:33 PM

Its like the auf weidersehen prem aeroplane thing. Literally translated, that means “see you again, prem” Stupid mackems need to research better.

  • 23 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 5:33 PM

YCMIU, i know, would you get in a taxi with him? I think not! 😉

  • 24 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:38 PM

Yep.Backing him and hailing him as a saviour are two very different things.

  • 25 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:40 PM

He looks like he has prople burried under his patio, thats for sure…. and probably one or two in the walls 😮

  • 26 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 5:41 PM

Comedy gold on talksport. A city fan saying Chelsea has been a circus the last few seasons. The biggest joke of the season has to be City’s farewell to the season and their show of gratitude to Pelligrini, who had, after all, brought them trophies. They thanked him and the team by emptying their stadium before they came back out. Class. 😉

  • 27 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 24, 2016 at 5:44 PM

Some fans are spoilled, Bobby. Like those poor wee bairns at man u who only have one trophy in 3 years to shout about. Well deserved sacking of van gaal 😉

  • 28 GeordieTwo // May 24, 2016 at 5:46 PM

This just in! Townsend not moving to Athletico Madrid either. We’re going to do this one club at a time lads so remain patient.

  • 29 Bobbybee // May 24, 2016 at 5:50 PM

YCMIU, that about sums it up matey. City fans used to be pretty loyal and, like us, grateful for any little glory, but they’ve changed for the worse. Top four, CL semi finals and the odd domestic trophy not good enough for them anymore. As for manure! Not even worth talking about them. 😉

  • 30 GeordieTwo // May 24, 2016 at 5:51 PM

And now this! Townsend not going to Wolves either…..Although he may visit Woverhampton to visit his granny.

  • 31 GeordieTwo // May 24, 2016 at 5:54 PM

Too much money at the top in the Prem. Ridiculous now. Thank God for Leicester. I hope another club finishes first next season outside of the usual suspects. Maybe some of the foreign billionaires will get bored and leave. Would like to see City and ManU in the bottom 10 for a while, followed by Chelsea. Those are the 3 I dislike the most.

  • 32 GeordieTwo // May 24, 2016 at 5:56 PM

There’s always a bit of a skunky smell following Chelsea around. I think they’re still in shock following their crap season. They always steal half of the available youngsters every season. How many so-called youngsters do they have either loaned out or in development squads. Wasting away.

  • 33 toon22 // May 24, 2016 at 5:56 PM

Can you rememmber when Manu used to bleet on about not replacing you manager bla bla bla..

  • 34 JP...from The Rock // May 24, 2016 at 5:59 PM

Good news on Townsend. He’s the quality winger we’ve craved for years and we should do everything to keep him.

On Benitez I really hope it it all sorted and confirmed that he’ll stay tomorrow. Starting to worry.

  • 35 microbar // May 24, 2016 at 11:38 PM
