Benitez To Get Huge Transfer Budget At Newcastle

1:07 pm, Wednesday, May 25th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 99 Comments

Rafa Benitez has agreed to remain as the Newcastle United manager and the news in the Telegraph today is that he will get a huge transfer budget in the summer and next January.

That’s in order to be sure the famous Newcastle club get promoted straight back to the Premier League and then the real business of making Newcastle great again can start.

Rafa will have total control of all transfers into and out of the club, but the other major agreement is the level of transfer funds he will receive.

jurgen klopp rafa benitez 343

Rafa Benitez – no wonder he’s smiling

Rafa will get cash to spend after Newcastle owner  Mike Ashley seems (very) willing to give Benitez carte blanche at the club.

Chief Scout Graham Carr will leave the club and Rafa will bring in his own scouting team.

The other news with transfers is that anything the club get in from transfers out – like selling Moussa Sissoko and Gini Wijnaldum – will be given back to Rafa in order to bring new (replacement) players into the club.

For that to be possible it seems that Newcastle must be in very good financial position  – at least for one year spent down below –  and we received just less than £73M from the Premier League yesterday for the season just ended.

And it could even be there will be no layoffs of the non-playing staff.

Since it’s completely the club’s fault we were relegated – that would be a good gesture.

And this all looks like a very good reaction to what was a very bad situation when we were relegated for the second time in seven years – exactly two weeks ago today.

Do you still have everyone’s predictions from last season? That would be fun.

Did anyone see us getting relegated? I still find it crazy that we went down.

  • 11 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // May 25, 2016 at 1:19 PM

What’s funny Is Mcclaren getting rejected by Rotherham.

  • 12 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 1:20 PM

Bobbybee – we wanted Ashley to stay out of football? When was that? Even if that was true, we certainly didn’t want him to take the football with him. The idea was that he should buck up his ideas and start appointing people who knew what they were doing in a business they knew all about. Ashley then waited until we got relegated twice and let’s not forget they waited until we were fairly certain to go down, to do something radical to save his business from catastrophic decline.

Faint praise is all that’s forthcoming, we would be yawning at the appointment of another also ran bod head coach or even retaining McCardew if we had scraped into staying in the PL.

  • 13 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // May 25, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Yeah I still cant believe we went down I assumed Mclaren would get us mid table like Pardew but a lot better to watch never thought it would be such a disaster !

Would be good to see us start giving teams a spanking at St James’s next season its been a while where teams no they are going to get a doing when they come to our ground !

  • 14 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // May 25, 2016 at 1:21 PM

£80 Million and he took us down, like how are do you even be that bad?! Charnley was a first class idiot.

  • 15 El Sleeve // May 25, 2016 at 1:21 PM

It’s crazy we went down but not at all surprising.

Now I’m really exited for this upcoming season. The goal has to be to beat our 102 points total!

  • 16 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Fat Mike might get a doff of the cap if we come back to the PL with a vengeance and he doesn’t start his old tricks and play silly beggars again.

  • 17 El Sleeve // May 25, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Which players are coming, what are the rumours, apart from Agger?

  • 18 Hail Wor Ashley // May 25, 2016 at 1:23 PM

    OOT!

    Krul – £5m

    Colo – released
    Saylor – released
    Janmaat – £7m
    Haidara – £2m

    Sissoko – £12-15m
    Gini – £12-15m
    Thauvin – £7m
    Cabella – £6m
    Gouffran – £1m

    Cisse – £3m
    Riviere – £1m

£60m raised and with Marveaux and Obertan added you’re talking a wage bill £25-30m lower so I’d say £50m of that money could be used for transfers and £10m to fill any financial hole.

    Remaining players:

    GK: Darlow, Elliot, Woodman

    RB: Anita, Mbabu

    CB: Lascelles, Mbemba, ???????, ???????

    LB: Dummet, ???????

    CM: Tiote, Shelvey, Colback, Saivet

    RW: Townsend, ??????

AM: SDJ, Perez (would rather see him as a ST though)

    LW: Aarons, ??????, Sammy

ST: Mitrovic, Armstrong, ?????? (proven goalscorer)

6-8 players needed I’d say. £50m should be plenty for a rebuild especially if that includes 1 or 2 free agents.

What’s happening with the Premiership play-offs? Are Hull favourites to go back up?

  • 24 giimps // May 25, 2016 at 1:29 PM

Rafa is apparently allowed any funds fro player sales according to the chronic, that would be good, £30-40 mil for Sissoko, janmaat, cisse and Gini…..should be a few decent buys for that….I would go after Lee Hughes and see where we are in January, I think Rafa will be buying players able to step up in preparation, Rafa may want go keep most of the squad and save his powder till January, it starts now ?

  • 25 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // May 25, 2016 at 1:29 PM

Mike deserves no praise, he’s only doing this to save himself and his business. Wouldn’t suprise me if Ashley sacks him after we are promoted to get him off the wage bill. But, let’s see what happens.

  • 26 Bobbybee // May 25, 2016 at 1:30 PM

Tsunki, the reality is nobody knows what happened and why. Not me, not you – nobody. All we know is that Ashley has agreed to everything Rafa wanted and the future looks bright. How we got to this position has been decided behind closed doors and couldn’t have happened without Ashley’s say so. Why anybody on this blog wants to search for reasons to be bitchy on this auspicious day is beyond me. For all the things he’s got wrong in the past – and rightly been lambasted for it – like it or not, he’s got this 100% right.

Bobby if that was the case you would have been going back last season after that £80 million was spent. Lol.

  • 36 MadisonToon // May 25, 2016 at 1:38 PM

    HWA

Great reading of what needs to be done and fair valuations on those players. I’m not sure we’ll get quite that high for Janmaat, but I think some clubs would be willing to pay that for him as in the right side he would be quite good. 6-8 players is the right number as well. I think we’ll probably get a couple of free agents and 4 of the players that we need now and then keep filling things out in January and next summer.

    Highest priority holes to fill:
    1) a player who can play CB or LB
    2) a player who can play LW or RW
    3) a striker
    4) Another CB/LB
    5) Another winger

If we get versatile players for 1 and 2 then the flexibility that gives us for 4 and 5 is great. I rate a striker as farther down on the list as what we have (Mitro, Armstrong, Perez, SDJ) would serve us well without additions in the Championship IMO. We also have larger and more immediate gaps at CB and on the wings which should be prioritized.

Obviously we’ll need better than the current strikers in the Prem and getting someone in for a year to bed into the squad would be ideal but we also are unlikely to get a high-talent player to come play for us in the Championship. It’s more likely that we’ll get an up-and-comer (a la Mitrovic last year) which would be great. A speed merchant would be ideal as we don’t currently have that option with the current striking corps.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to seeing what Rafa will do transfers-wise and rebuilding and am quite excited for the summer/start of next season. The only question I have is how am I going to watch any games living in the US?!?

At last something positive to latch onto and some genuine hope for the future. It’s great to feel the positive energy emanating from the fans after years of suppression. Since SBR the ground has never been rocking with the manager’s name sung throughout the match.

Toon fans instinctively know what’s right for the club , like a sixth sense. When we’re not sure there is a strange atmosphere which maybe doesn’t transmit that positive energy to the pitch. This appointment is so right and people can feel it deep down. The momentum will gather now.SJP will become a fortress again and Rafa will be a hero and a legend HWTL

    Mautitoon

I really like Darlow. I actually thinknhe is the most ‘natural’ goalkeeper we have had in ages. He seems to do the right things at the right times without thinking about it. Krul is an excellent shot stopper, and elliot is a well rounded keeper, but i think darlow will go on to become better than both of them. Some may think I am mad for saying that.

If there was even the slightest chance of that, we’d be mad not to. Even if he can only manage 75% of our games, it would give us a huge advantage. Thing is, would we stretch to his probable wages?

Sorry Bobbybee @26 going to have to stay disagreed with that totally. Ashley has only got it 100% right through 100% necessity, not because he swung into decisive action before disaster struck. it’s knee-jerk at best, but having the guts to go for Benitez desperate a move as it may be, gas to be credited.

And we DO know what happened to get Benitez to this table, the whole embarrassing sorry decade long saga.

And thus is the praise Ashley deserves IF it was him and not just Charnley who hot this deal going.

I don’t see the need for a huge transfer budget this season. It’s about spending as little as possible but as much as necessary to get back up. Then next year when we can attract top top players we should be up at the 80m-100m again

  • 71 Bobbybee // May 25, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Tsunki, i don’t care how the decision was reached, i’m simply happy it has been. We’ll probably never know, but Rafa is happy to work with those in charge and that’s good enough for me.

I reckon Jack was the closest.

Gerrard would be class for a couple of seasons.

Id happily have him here. Wages though would be a stumbling block deffo.

  • 76 Jail for Ashley // May 25, 2016 at 2:27 PM

    Swallocks,
I rang the box office as soon as I read NUFC.com. They’re not on sale yet.

  • 77 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 2:30 PM

Bobbybee @71 agree with that tbf. it’s onward and upwards I suppose. Perhaps having a tutor like Benitez might be the tipping point for these fumbling slack jaws to find that light bulb moment about what a club should run like.

  • 78 hibbitt // May 25, 2016 at 2:30 PM

    shaun83

sure Rafa will know what / who he wants
i think Rafa’s team will be working away as we speak trying to sign the player Rafa wants and needs

  • 79 bettyswallocks // May 25, 2016 at 2:32 PM

Tsunki…… I do accept that it’s harder for some than others but at some point we will need to draw a line under the past and move on. It does appear that lessons have been learnt albeit the hard way and as a result of downright failure. We now have Rafa , half a decent squad , a commitment of money to spend , a great stadium, and the best fans in the world so my glass is half full. Fill that sherry glass son and join the Rafalution.

  • 80 hibbitt // May 25, 2016 at 2:35 PM

hoping for a good nights sleep tonight never had one for weeks

  • 81 Bobbybee // May 25, 2016 at 2:35 PM

Tsunki, you never know. Once he realises how a club should be run, i doubt he’ll go back. To be fair, from the very outset, he had nothing but shyt advisors telling him how they’d do it. Now he’ll learn how it should be done properly, let’s hope for all our sakes it will be lessons learnt.

  • 82 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 2:39 PM

I was way out on your list Martoon. Thanks for posting that again 🙁

I was really interested to see how Pokat got on, couldn’t see his name scanning down there though…..

    😉

  • 83 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 2:41 PM

Bobby – the big lesson when running a footy club is that no matter how well the figures are looking, never take your eye off the ball. Literally, figuratively, whatever.

  • 84 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 25, 2016 at 2:43 PM

Nothing yet on ssn appart from the white news block at the bottom saying what we already know.

  • 85 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 2:44 PM

Betty – as a youngun’, my first experience of sherry was also my first and last experience of my Dad’s old army ‘cure’ for inebriation, that of downing a glass of salty water. Vicious, but fair.

I tend to steer clear of both those drinks these days. 😐

  • 86 bettyswallocks // May 25, 2016 at 2:44 PM

Jail ……… When you go for the tickets if you see a tent, a couple of oil drums cut in half with a fire smouldering and a torn and dirty Ashley Out banner. That’ll be Ruddies picket line, but don’t be intimidated when he calls you a scab.

  • 87 Bobbybee // May 25, 2016 at 2:46 PM

Tsunki, i was miles off marra! 😉 But then, i am the eternal optimist and despite the evidence, i always fancy us to pull off a surprise. This seasons predictions might well see a lot more optimism as well. 🙂

  • 88 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 25, 2016 at 2:47 PM

I agree with the “draw a line under it” sentiments. If the appointment of rafa can’t at least unite us on the important matters, nothing will. Past is past. It doesn’t really matter who was right about something at 8:16pm on december 5th 2013.

    HWTL, HWTF
    and mash…..don’t fcuk it up.again!

  • 89 martoon // May 25, 2016 at 2:55 PM

No problem Tsunki – I don’t think many people were anywhere near. I will do it again just before the season starts although I’m pretty sure I will get a lot of 1st position predictions 🙂

  • 90 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 25, 2016 at 2:55 PM

I am.starting to think people have gone to see what was said at 8:16 december 5th 2013….

  • 91 bettyswallocks // May 25, 2016 at 2:56 PM

Tsunki…….. Maybe you’ve already encountered it but there is a superb white wine that originates from Galicia,”Alburino”. You should have access to it on the island . Must be served very cold but absolutely superb.

  • 92 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // May 25, 2016 at 2:59 PM

Might celebrate with a bottle of Cava, later…. but not John Cava.

  • 93 bettyswallocks // May 25, 2016 at 3:04 PM

Can you believe that Carver applied for the Everton job. What a plonker.

  • 94 Average_Contents // May 25, 2016 at 3:08 PM

    Betty

    Best laugh all fcuking day!

He’s got some balls I’ll give him that, even if they do form part of his face.

  • 95 Bobbybee // May 25, 2016 at 3:09 PM

Betty, run down manager to a run down shit hole of a stadium… maybe not such a surprise! 😉

  • 96 clinath@ed // May 25, 2016 at 3:11 PM

do you think winning the championship counts on MA’s list of achievements/requirements for selling up..?

  • 97 Tsunki // May 25, 2016 at 3:15 PM

Are @88 who was it? It wasn’t toonbrother was it?

  • 98 WLtoon // May 25, 2016 at 3:19 PM

    @22 Hibbett
yes , we hold the record attendencw over a season for the championship.
Its around 45500, but i think we.ll beat that next season

  • 99 Lilongwe Geordie // May 25, 2016 at 3:20 PM

So… is it official official, or just media say it is official? Either way seems very promising.

Now, to try and sort out the squad ASAP, and have the majority of what we want in place for the start of pre season. Robertson, Trippier and Redmond would be 3 I’d want. Robertson will heavily depend on if Hull go up. Trippier and Redmond would be great signings and both have Prem and Championship experience. Then an experienced goalscorer, centre mid and centre half to shoulder the burden and responsibility at this level.

Plenty to go out from the squad with players more able to fight and challenge for a place coming in, and some of the alleged stars heading out.
