Newcastle Linked With Creative Championship Star

12:27 pm, Friday, May 27th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 15 Comments

The Sun is reporting today that Rafa Benitez is interested in Derby County’s young star Will Hughes, and we were first linked with this talented midfielder three years ago when he was a young sensation playing for Derby.

Will hardly played last season at all, because in the opening game of the season against Bolton, he damaged his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) in his right knee and was ruled out for more than six months.

Will didn’t return to the team until last month, so he has basically missed a season with the serious knee injury – the same one that our two goalkeepers Rob Elliot and Tim Krul are currently recovering from.

Hughes started the final five games of last season and didn’t look any the worse after recovering from his serious injury.

Hughes is listed in the Sun report along with Leeds central midfielder Lewis Cook and Brighton center-back Lewis Dunk, who we were first interested in four years ago – as being three players the Magpies are interested in.

All three  players have been tracked by Chief Scout Graham Carr in the past, and they are  former targets playing in the Championship – and Rafa has recently said he may bring in some Championship players this summer.

Maybe that’s why we are being credited with an interest in these players?

Will is a skillful and creative player and it would be great to see how Rafa Benitez could improve the youngster,  who only  turned 21 last month.

Will has played 145 times for Derby County with 10 goals and 14 assists since making his debut in November, 2011 against Peterborough United, when he was just 16 years-old.

He has played 17 times for the England U21 side with a couple of goals.

Comments welcome.

If Pearson goes there, we wont be getting Will Hughes. I have a strong feeling Rafa isn’t going to but more than 3-4 players which will dismay some of us. He will probably want Tiote ( whom he loves ) and Shelvey as his first choice midf. Dummett and Mbabu Sherry and Janmaat as fullbacks. Probably buy an experienced centre back, he has two good centre backs for this level, a fit (?) Taylor as back up ( great!! ) a right winger ( assuming sissoko goes) and a big fast striker. That might be our lot. And the useless back up staff who produce useless young teams all stay. Sorry but I want to see a lot of change with at least 6-10 guys slung out.

Genuine question… what’s Rafa like at bringing through youngsters?

Those three players will be really good for us, add to that Ross McCormack and Caulker and we have the makings of a very good team.

if we are depending on s taylor staying fit god help us !!!

Hibbitt I want a clear out. rafa is a good manager but it can be hard for the leopard to change spots. I cant see some of our lazy guys doing much, and lets write off the Spurs game as a one off. As for the likes of Beardsley and Co , gimme a break. Of course it may have been agreed at negotiation time that these guys would stay and Rafa may have accepted that.

I wouldn’t mind an overhaul myself although it is rarely a complete one. The decent players must be kept. I include the two most bashed lately, who are arguably our best players. I too was disappointed in them but they are very good nonetheless and I think Rafa will make sure they stay.

    Ron Knee,
No I’m being directed to the offocial site and they want my money 🙁

Will Hughes wouldn’t get in our first team as things stand. As for signing a player coming back from a long term injury, really? after the season of injuries that the squad has just endured. I think not.

Hughes is top notch and is a must buy. He’s the best midfielder to come out of that division since rob lee.

  • 13 Shadow_Shearer // May 27, 2016 at 2:56 PM

Good young player, but coming back from a year injury, there’s a chance he may not be the same player.

  • 14 Bradley // May 27, 2016 at 5:58 PM

    Cook 8m
    McCormack 8m
    Dunk 8m
    New left back,
Janmaat will leave so new right back!
    Redmond maybe???
    And Hughes 10m

6-10 slung out, a bit harsh!!!

    Who????

    Taylor

    Colo
    Gouffran

    Obertan, marvaux have already gone

That’s about it..albeit sissoko attitude is w@nk but under rafa he may get to his best.. id probably loan gini, Janmaat n sissoko out abroad… the rest can stay and if we add to it we will walk the championship and be more than ready for premiership.. bit like keegans 1993 team..
