The Sun is reporting today that Rafa Benitez is interested in Derby County’s young star Will Hughes, and we were first linked with this talented midfielder three years ago when he was a young sensation playing for Derby.
Will hardly played last season at all, because in the opening game of the season against Bolton, he damaged his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) in his right knee and was ruled out for more than six months.
Will didn’t return to the team until last month, so he has basically missed a season with the serious knee injury – the same one that our two goalkeepers Rob Elliot and Tim Krul are currently recovering from.
Will Hughes – Derby County midfielder
Hughes started the final five games of last season and didn’t look any the worse after recovering from his serious injury.
Hughes is listed in the Sun report along with Leeds central midfielder Lewis Cook and Brighton center-back Lewis Dunk, who we were first interested in four years ago – as being three players the Magpies are interested in.
All three players have been tracked by Chief Scout Graham Carr in the past, and they are former targets playing in the Championship – and Rafa has recently said he may bring in some Championship players this summer.
Maybe that’s why we are being credited with an interest in these players?
Will is a skillful and creative player and it would be great to see how Rafa Benitez could improve the youngster, who only turned 21 last month.
Will has played 145 times for Derby County with 10 goals and 14 assists since making his debut in November, 2011 against Peterborough United, when he was just 16 years-old.
He has played 17 times for the England U21 side with a couple of goals.
