Newcastle Reported In Pre-Season Tournament

The Corby Town official website is reporting that Corby  along with three other clubs – Leeds United, Newcastle United and PSV – will compete for the Steel Park Cup on the weekend of Saturday July 23rd and Sunday July 24th.

Newcastle have agreed to send a side to compete in that tournament on that weekend, two weeks before the Championship season kicks off.

The two men running Newcastle – Lee Charnley and Rafa Benitez

This is what was put on the Corby web-site today:

“Supporters will enjoy two matches on both Saturday and Sunday, with one ticket giving access to both matches on a selected day for just £15.

“A discounted weekend ticket is also available for just £25 to witness the entire tournament.

“Corby Town FC 2016/17 season ticket holders will gain free entry on both days.

“The reigning champions PSV Eindhoven XI will face Leeds United XI in the opening match of the tournament at 12pm on the Saturday, with Corby Town hosting Newcastle United XI at 3.30pm.”

“On 24th July Newcastle will face PSV at 12pm before Corby Town and Leeds bring the tournament to a close at 3.30pm.”

Corby Town manager Tommy Wright said this:

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome these three fantastic clubs to Corby for the second annual Steel Park Cup.

“We are looking forward to hosting the tournament, which will offer our supporters the chance to see some top sides at Steel Park before the start of the new season.”

“It will of course also provide a very competitive level of preparation for all the teams involved ahead of the new season.”

Lee Charnley is busy working on the full pre-season schedule for the club and we would expect that to be announced before the end of this week.

Comments welcome.

Interesting we don’t play Leeds (which I can understand)& Corby don’t play PSV which I would have thought would have been the biggest crowd draw for Corby!

It’s probably because Corby would more than likely get smashed of psv.

For me the squad does need strengthening and not just tweaking, we need a quality LB, CB and proven ST. People saying look how we played against Spurs, Lpool and M City, that for me should be a worry considering how poor we played at times against Swansea Palace and Villa, there aren’t any glamour teams in the Championship. Like I said earlier as well there are not enough “purples” (as much as I hate the term) in the squad. You need at least 22 first team ready players in a squad of 26 not the eleven envisaged by our ‘previous’ regime.

Rafa is supposed to be tracking the new David Silva .
Patrick Roberts a 19 year old winger on loan to Celtic last season from Man City.
Pep Guardiola might just see his natural progression as being under Benitez for a season in the Championship.

Patrick Robets cost City c.£10million last summer from Fulham. Can’t see him being allowed to leave, and if he is it won’t be cheap.

Jib was suggesting on loan for a season which sounds a good idea.

Corby Town are in the Conference Northern League but finished last so that may drop them back into the Southern Premier League.

So how do they manage to organize a tournament like that.
Why can’t Gateshead or Blyth do similar.

Just hope the don’t do a Leyton Orient on us.

Yup, just checked, he has a season left at Celtic. Let’s hope Rafa isn’t wasting time by tracking a player that is unavailable.

Wonder when they are going to have the next Fans Forum meeting. The last minutes said the end of season meeting would be in May. So a bit overdue now.
Think they’ll be tempted to wheel out Rafa for this next meeting.

Ok. Something to break the silence… just wondering what kind of fan/supporter you considder yourselves to be. To show younwhat i mean, i will go first…

I Probably fit the profile of an armchair fan, but do not consider it a bad thing. I have never owned a seson ticket, but have been to a handful of games. Try to watch them on tv whenever I can. Used to by a shirt, every couple of seasons, but not while wonga is on it. As a rugby fan first, i am often irritated by over paid diving cheating buggers and also the need for some fans to make rivalries overly bitter. I also don’t think anyone who is a fan of NUFC in any way should be placed in a pecking order of how valid an opinion they have, because as a Geordie born and bred, Football is still very much in my blood.

Yes but the competition had a number of high profile players last summer with Coutinho and Emre playing for Liverpool.

my own profile follows yours almost exactly, other than the rugby front. Because of my son I have become more and more interested in that sport, and as the physical contact is so much more, have become disillusioned with the softness football has developed.
I will never stop supporting Newcastle, as its my first sport love, but the game itself hold little fun for me anymore. I am genuinely hoping the championship rekindles that lost passion.

Oh aye not disputing that i think i could’ve won it with that Chelsea team just think it’s amazing that it’s actually happening
When you think it’s the equivalent of mourinho, simeone or pep doing the same
probably more likely shows how crazy the money now is in England
Must be set up now for the best championship season ever tho

SDJ, Colo, Taylor, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Gouf, Obertan, Marveoux, Rivierie, Tiote, Janmaat, Krul, Townsend

Beside Obertan & Marveoux , there are a total of 11 players need to be replaced, the only player that need to retain is Townsend. If Townsend agree to stay, a total of 12 players(including Obertan & Marveoux) to be replaced. I hope Rafa do his transfers asap, from what i see there isn’t much time left.

Villa – could have the “potential” to outspend everyone.
The new owner/anticipated owner is Tony Xia – a Chinese Billionaire – nobody seems to know his exact wealth – but he clearly is worth a bob or two.
Currently he is awaiting the results of the fit and proper person test (also his directors) from the football authorities here.
So a lot depends on how much money he is going to commit.
