Newcastle Reported In Pre-Season Tournament

12:03 pm, Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 54 Comments

The Corby Town official website is reporting that Corby  along with three other clubs – Leeds United, Newcastle United and PSV – will compete for the Steel Park Cup on the weekend of Saturday July 23rd and Sunday July 24th.

Newcastle have agreed to send a side to compete in that tournament on that weekend, two weeks before the Championship season kicks off.

The two men running Newcastle – Lee Charnley and Rafa Benitez

This is what was put on the Corby web-site today:

“Supporters will enjoy two matches on both Saturday and Sunday, with one ticket giving access to both matches on a selected day for just £15.

“A discounted weekend ticket is also available for just £25 to witness the entire tournament.

“Corby Town FC 2016/17 season ticket holders will gain free entry on both days.

“The reigning champions PSV Eindhoven XI will face Leeds United XI in the opening match of the tournament at 12pm on the Saturday, with Corby Town hosting Newcastle United XI at 3.30pm.”

“On 24th July Newcastle will face PSV at 12pm before Corby Town and Leeds bring the tournament to a close at 3.30pm.”

Corby Town manager Tommy Wright said this:

“We are absolutely delighted to be able to welcome these three fantastic clubs to Corby for the second annual Steel Park Cup.

“We are looking forward to hosting the tournament, which will offer our supporters the chance to see some top sides at Steel Park before the start of the new season.”

“It will of course also provide a very competitive level of preparation for all the teams involved ahead of the new season.”

Lee Charnley is busy working on the full pre-season schedule for the club and we would expect that to be announced before the end of this week.

Comments welcome.

Interesting we don’t play Leeds (which I can understand)& Corby don’t play PSV which I would have thought would have been the biggest crowd draw for Corby!

  • 2 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 12:25 PM

    Martoon

It’s probably because Corby would more than likely get smashed of psv.

Well maybe Gini will turn up for the PSV game…then leave with them

  • 4 giimps // Jun 1, 2016 at 12:30 PM

Not a bad run out and a nice Hilton to stay in for the sat night, might be a doer

For me the squad does need strengthening and not just tweaking, we need a quality LB, CB and proven ST. People saying look how we played against Spurs, Lpool and M City, that for me should be a worry considering how poor we played at times against Swansea Palace and Villa, there aren’t any glamour teams in the Championship. Like I said earlier as well there are not enough “purples” (as much as I hate the term) in the squad. You need at least 22 first team ready players in a squad of 26 not the eleven envisaged by our ‘previous’ regime.

    Jail,

if we win this tourney, does that count to MA’s promise of winning something and then hes shot of us? 🙂

  • 7 Jib // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:18 PM

Rafa is supposed to be tracking the new David Silva .
Patrick Roberts a 19 year old winger on loan to Celtic last season from Man City.
Pep Guardiola might just see his natural progression as being under Benitez for a season in the Championship.

  • 8 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:24 PM

    Jib,
Patrick Robets cost City c.£10million last summer from Fulham. Can’t see him being allowed to leave, and if he is it won’t be cheap.

  • 9 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:27 PM

    *Roberts

  • 10 carl // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:28 PM

Jib was suggesting on loan for a season which sounds a good idea.

  • 11 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:31 PM

Roberts is still at loan on Celtic anyway, he joined on a two year loan deal.

  • 12 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:32 PM

Well, 18months. I think he joined in Jan until the end of 2016/17 season.

  • 13 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:42 PM

Corby Town are in the Conference Northern League but finished last so that may drop them back into the Southern Premier League.

So how do they manage to organize a tournament like that.
Why can’t Gateshead or Blyth do similar.

Just hope the don’t do a Leyton Orient on us.

  • 14 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:45 PM

Yup, just checked, he has a season left at Celtic. Let’s hope Rafa isn’t wasting time by tracking a player that is unavailable.

  • 15 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 1:49 PM

Wonder when they are going to have the next Fans Forum meeting. The last minutes said the end of season meeting would be in May. So a bit overdue now.
Think they’ll be tempted to wheel out Rafa for this next meeting.

Does anybody think Danny Ings on loan would be worth a shout can’t see him getting much time at liverscum

  • 17 barkel // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:05 PM

this tournament will be youth sides, a mix of our u-18’s & reserves

  • 18 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:34 PM

Ok. Something to break the silence… just wondering what kind of fan/supporter you considder yourselves to be. To show younwhat i mean, i will go first…

I Probably fit the profile of an armchair fan, but do not consider it a bad thing. I have never owned a seson ticket, but have been to a handful of games. Try to watch them on tv whenever I can. Used to by a shirt, every couple of seasons, but not while wonga is on it. As a rugby fan first, i am often irritated by over paid diving cheating buggers and also the need for some fans to make rivalries overly bitter. I also don’t think anyone who is a fan of NUFC in any way should be placed in a pecking order of how valid an opinion they have, because as a Geordie born and bred, Football is still very much in my blood.

  • 19 carl // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Yes but the competition had a number of high profile players last summer with Coutinho and Emre playing for Liverpool.

  • 20 clinath@ed // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:43 PM

    youcouldnt….
my own profile follows yours almost exactly, other than the rugby front. Because of my son I have become more and more interested in that sport, and as the physical contact is so much more, have become disillusioned with the softness football has developed.
I will never stop supporting Newcastle, as its my first sport love, but the game itself hold little fun for me anymore. I am genuinely hoping the championship rekindles that lost passion.

  • 21 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:43 PM

    Dok

I doubt that, I think he’s stuck with us for a lot longer. 🙂

  • 22 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:47 PM

Do I detect a hint of Facebook creeping into the blog? 😉

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:47 PM

    Clinath

Aye i hope so, too. For the sake of all nufc fans everywhere. I still feel more optimistic than i have in 10 years, due to the Rafa effect.

  • 24 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:48 PM

    Essex

Nah, i don’t want any pictures of cats 😀

  • 25 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 2:51 PM

Essex @22 – how do you mean/in what respect?

  • 26 Back Door Man // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:16 PM

Mr Tuff – maybe he means awash with potted biographies.

  • 27 manxpie // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:23 PM

Well it looks like there is gonna be 2 champion league winning managers in the championship next season pretty mental like especially since the likes of pulis and fat Sam are managing in the prem!

  • 28 carltoon // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:31 PM

just got my season tickets transfered to one seat in the platinum club. having sat in the gallowgate for ten years and other parts of the ground for over 50 years. will now be eating prawns sandwiches.

  • 29 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:32 PM

    Manx

We have the better of the two, though. RDM had a ready made team when he won it, rafa won it with his own team and his own style.

  • 30 manxpie // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:42 PM

Oh aye not disputing that i think i could’ve won it with that Chelsea team just think it’s amazing that it’s actually happening
When you think it’s the equivalent of mourinho, simeone or pep doing the same
probably more likely shows how crazy the money now is in England
Must be set up now for the best championship season ever tho

  • 31 clinath@ed // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:44 PM

Don’t want to tempt fate, but unless Villa spend the summer in Hogwarts they’ve got no chance of challenging next season.

  • 32 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 1, 2016 at 3:51 PM

I hope we give villa a couple of horcruxes right in on thier phillosophers stones on the way. Hoping that, in at least one of the games, we beat them by a quiditch score.

  • 33 illusionerx // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:05 PM

SDJ, Colo, Taylor, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Gouf, Obertan, Marveoux, Rivierie, Tiote, Janmaat, Krul, Townsend

Beside Obertan & Marveoux , there are a total of 11 players need to be replaced, the only player that need to retain is Townsend. If Townsend agree to stay, a total of 12 players(including Obertan & Marveoux) to be replaced. I hope Rafa do his transfers asap, from what i see there isn’t much time left.

  • 34 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:09 PM

BDM – potted biographies – my God that would stir things up a bit. I suspect their would be more tall tales than facts.

  • 35 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:14 PM

Villa – could have the “potential” to outspend everyone.
The new owner/anticipated owner is Tony Xia – a Chinese Billionaire – nobody seems to know his exact wealth – but he clearly is worth a bob or two.
Currently he is awaiting the results of the fit and proper person test (also his directors) from the football authorities here.
So a lot depends on how much money he is going to commit.

  • 36 Graeme // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:37 PM

Mister Tuff – Tall Tales eh!! I’m 6’8″ is that tall enough lol

  • 37 Munster Mag // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:45 PM

    jeez what rafulution?

  • 38 Spoof // Jun 1, 2016 at 4:51 PM

    Tuff

the last I heard was that the deal to purchase Villa is almost certain to fall through.

  • 39 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:05 PM

being descended from the gods I would hesitate to post my potted biography on the blog for fear of provoking the goddess Invidia or the god Zelos.

    So I won’t.

  • 40 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:07 PM

Villa may well outspend us with a new billionaire owner but do they have Rafa.

  • 41 Ron Knee // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:08 PM

    New news, I think:

“Newcastle United will play a pre-season friendly against Dublin-based League of Ireland side Bohemian on July 16, The Chronicle understands.”

  • 42 Belfast // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:11 PM

Something very fishy about the new Villa owner. I think after his early bluster they found out he didn’t own a load of companies that he said he owned.

Probably another Cellino, well fingers crossed anyway.

  • 43 lesh // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:22 PM

If anyone’s planning to go to any of the games at Corby, they’d better get in quick for tickets. Steel Park’s capacity is a massive……. 3893.

  • 44 Belfast // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:24 PM

I think any prospective new owner turning up and claiming they’re going to spend 50 million in the summer after relegation should be treated with suspicion lol

  • 45 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:29 PM

Dr. Tony Xia eh? Hmmm. We’ll have to have a look into this beermonkey.

  • 46 lesh // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:29 PM

If Xia the Villa’s got plans to outspend anybody, he’ll need to consider the FFP rules.

But in saying that, could it be possible to overspend massively, be promoted, pay the overspend penalties and make a fortune from a club’s newly acquired Prem status.

If it is then the rules are jo deterrent at all – unless sanctions are introduced that either deny promotion to the offending clubs or impose big points deductions.

  • 47 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:33 PM

Sold Teamax for 450M. Owns more companies. Trained at Harvard, MIT, and Oxford (showoff). Likes footy and played as a striker during his Oxford days. Who knows about this lad….. He’s not a proper billionaire like our pinhead though.

  • 48 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:35 PM

spoof – it is unclear what the latest position is re Villa. The bloke has apparently set up UK Bank accounts and got the necessary paperwork in last week. If he’s got not much in his new UK accounts it will be off.
Should find out this week I guess.

  • 49 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:35 PM

And he’ll have to prove he’s as bad at ownership as Ashley is before I welcome him to The Club of Pinheads. Harrumph…..

  • 50 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:37 PM

He has put the 54M pound deposit down though apparently Mr. Tuff mate. I will induct him into The Club of Pinheads if he gets Villa relegated twice more in the next seven seasons.

  • 51 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:39 PM

Make that 430M for Teamax. But that will be committed to other investments. He claims to be ready to give the new manager 50M to start. Sniff….. Still not impressed…..

  • 52 Mister Tuff // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:42 PM

G2 – £50 million seems paltry now -even more so when you consider Mr Tubbs was going to put in £200 million – then backtracked.

  • 53 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:46 PM

It does indeed Mr. Tuff mate. And paper talk is just that. I think it will take him a while to get things going there but we’ll keep an eye on him. Are they up to the fight? Are we up to the fight? It’s all still to be done. Not sure I understand the value of the tournament we’ve signed up for. Good for the young’uns I suppose.

  • 54 GeordieTwo // Jun 1, 2016 at 5:53 PM

Are the Corby Town Cheesecutters any good then? They just got relegated apparently. Are they owned by Ashley by any chance? No that’s against the rules isn’t it?
