Rafa Benitez Wants To Be Like Sir Alex Ferguson

5:41 pm, Monday, June 13th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 18 Comments

A person who knows Rafa Benitez very well both professionally and personally is his biographer, Paco Lloret,  a sports journalist in Valencia. who came to know Rafa very well when he was at Valencia for three years from 2001.

He wrote a biography Rafa Benitez back in 2005 after Rafa had left Valencia for Liverpool.

Paco has been interviewed today in the Chronicle in a Q&A session about Rafa.

Paco was asked if Rafa has always wanted full control at a club and is it something he thinks he needs to be successful.

This is how Paco answered that question:

“This is something Rafa has been looking for; he has craved it for a long, long time.”

“He wants to be in charge; he wants to be the boss and be in control of everything he believes he needs to be making decisions over.”

“In one way, he wants to be like Sir Alex Ferguson was at Manchester United.”

“The pair clashed over the years, but Rafa knew Ferguson had control.”

“This authority is exactly what he’s been looking for.”

Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal were given full control of football matters at their respective clubs and have been pretty successful as football managers – the best two managers ever in the Premier League for sure.

As well as being a coup for Newcastle to get somebody as good as Rafa in to manage the club, it’s also very good for Rafa, because not only is he loved by the Geordie fans as he was at both Valencia and Liverpool,  but he has been given almost complete control at Newcastle.

This could really turn out to be a win-win situation for both Newcastle and Rafa and we hope the manager stays on Tyneside a long long time.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Seen a few posts saying we dont need wingers !?!? What?!!?

We have got rid of 3 this summer from the squad and operated the whole of last season without a left hand side which played a big part in us not being able to break lesser teams down which helped send us down!!

Teams will park the bus at St James’s so we need attacks from both wings and the middle to open teams up !

We need wingers , creative midfielders as much as we need defenders and strikers !!

We were poor at the back , poor at finishing and poor at creating chances so every part of the squad needs upgraded !!

Yes Munster! Your lads giving as good as they get against Sweden and really should be one up. The watchable games just continue to flow. Could be one of the best Euro’s since 96.

I was loading the Ireland game onto my cell to watch, when my boss walked in, shaking his head… Elliot had put up a tweet about the game so I replied to him, saying my boss wasn’t happy… he replied back to me and said to tell my boss that he okayed it 🙂

Probably jinxed the other matches now saying that, starting with Belgium vs Italy.

    Gwaaarn Ireland!

Robbie Brady backing up why I’ve always been a fan and have been bleating about buying him for our LB spot for a few years. Lots of quality and work ethic, give him better players around him, a target man like Mitro and his class will show.

Only team who haven’t played well is Northern Ireland unfortunately.

I have to say the atmosphere is terrific again. That roar from the Irish was a huge noise. The football in these championships hasn’t disappointed up til now.
Irish marshalling Ibra fairly well, but there’s a lot of no way to go!

It was only a couple of days ago Sweden beat Wales 3-0, how the hell did Wales lose that Match.

  • 16 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:15 PM

Aye, was always going to be difficult for Northern Ireland.
Dread to think what Germany will do to them.

  • 17 Spoof // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:20 PM

Ireland are now sitting far to deep, they are inviting Sweden on to them, get a grip and do what they’ve done all game and peg them back.

Hell no. The club doesn’t need one who manipulate PGMO and the media.
