A person who knows Rafa Benitez very well both professionally and personally is his biographer, Paco Lloret, a sports journalist in Valencia. who came to know Rafa very well when he was at Valencia for three years from 2001.
He wrote a biography Rafa Benitez back in 2005 after Rafa had left Valencia for Liverpool.
Paco has been interviewed today in the Chronicle in a Q&A session about Rafa.
Paco was asked if Rafa has always wanted full control at a club and is it something he thinks he needs to be successful.
This is how Paco answered that question:
“This is something Rafa has been looking for; he has craved it for a long, long time.”
“He wants to be in charge; he wants to be the boss and be in control of everything he believes he needs to be making decisions over.”
“In one way, he wants to be like Sir Alex Ferguson was at Manchester United.”
“The pair clashed over the years, but Rafa knew Ferguson had control.”
“This authority is exactly what he’s been looking for.”
Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal were given full control of football matters at their respective clubs and have been pretty successful as football managers – the best two managers ever in the Premier League for sure.
As well as being a coup for Newcastle to get somebody as good as Rafa in to manage the club, it’s also very good for Rafa, because not only is he loved by the Geordie fans as he was at both Valencia and Liverpool, but he has been given almost complete control at Newcastle.
This could really turn out to be a win-win situation for both Newcastle and Rafa and we hope the manager stays on Tyneside a long long time.
What do you think?
