Report In Italy That Wijnaldum On His Way To Roma

6:12 pm, Monday, June 13th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 100 Comments

Tuttosport in Italy are reporting that Walter Sabatini, Roma’s Sporting Director, has already spoken with Gini Wijnaldum’s agent.

Roma’s Miralem Pjanic seems to be on his way to Juventus and is said to be in Turon today for his medical and Roma have for some weeks been linked with a move for Wijnaldum to replace Pjanic.

Gini Wijnaldum – Roma want him

What doesn’t make sense to us is Tuttosport are also reporting that Sabatini has told Gini’s agent to wait until the 30th of June before doing any business for his client, in order to comply with FFP regulations.

Players cannot be signed until the 1st July when the new financial year begins and the summer transfer window officially opens, but there’s no reason at all that negotiations cannot be going on before then.

That’s as long as they go through official channels like Sabatini lifts up the phone to talk to Newcastle, so we are a little skeptical of this report.

As for the fee, it’s supposed to be around €18m (£14.2M), which is around what we paid for him last July, so that’s not a surprise,  but maybe Newcastle could get even more for the midfielder.

Rafa has said if players do move this summer, it will have to be for a very good fee, because Newcastle don’t have to sell any player.

All this stuff being reported in the papers really means nothing until Newcastle are contacted and get involved.

From what we can tell Rafa Benitez is keen to keep Gini Wijnaldum at the club – and we are almost sure Rafa  will now be in contact with Gini’s agent trying to find out what’s going on – if anything.

Although he was Newcastle’s top scorer with 11 goals last season and our best player in the first half of the season – Gini  did not play well in the second half of the season.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

11 goals from midfield in a struggling/relegated side, Rafa should be able to eek a few more quid out of Roma, rather than money back I feel.

What has this to do with the Ireland game, howay, focus on what is important and interesting!!!!!!!!

Beware Ibra…he’s due to do something outrageous..

  • 5 sing in the corner // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:27 PM

Mind, that Brady is a canny player. Very comfortable on the ball.

Soz dok. Maybe Brady laces one in the top corner now!?

  • 9 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:31 PM

Come on Republic, they’re better than Sweden easily

  • 10 Hail Wor Ashley // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:32 PM

That’s why you never sit on a 1-0 and concede the command of the match. Don’t know why managers do that. In full control, Sweden not creating anything, but instead of continuing and keeping the positive football going, withdraw into own half and go defensive. Stupid.

Especially stupid when you’ve got a Villa and Sunderland CB pairing.

  • 11 funguswatty // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:33 PM

Bull window not open yet and will have to be a silly price for Raffa to let him go

  • 12 Hail Wor Ashley // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:34 PM

I’d happily take that amount for Gini.

  • 13 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:35 PM

    Keane will win it.

  • 14 sing in the corner // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:36 PM

Yep Hail, in a second! Not the correct character for the toon. Mind you he’s not alone there!

  • 15 Hail Wor Ashley // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:44 PM

Shane Long has disappointed, hopefully will have a moment like Ibra did in the final few mins.

  • 16 sing in the corner // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:44 PM

It seems strange that Ireland have ran out of steam so dramatically after an hour, or not much more than that. Aren’t these guys fit or something?

  • 17 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:47 PM

Think they’re the oldest team in tournament.

  • 18 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:53 PM

If they tire after an hour, they might struggle with Hazard, Du Bruyne and Lukaka et al running at them for 90 mins.
Decent performance though, tough group that.

  • 19 sing in the corner // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:54 PM

Wow, top quality camera work. That’ll be Sweden taking the prize for good looking lasses in the crowd then!

  • 20 Spoof // Jun 13, 2016 at 6:54 PM

I doubt that’s enough, I expect Italy and Belgium to go through and for one of the 4 best placed 3rd teams then for me they had to beat Sweden.

  • 21 Uncertain Toon // Jun 13, 2016 at 7:02 PM

Aye Spoof, Belgium have the potential to go all the way.
Curious to see how they’ll get on without Kompany.

Ha ha oh yes. Marketing at its finest. But do you remember back in the 80s in the Gallowgate when Exel crisps decided to send a load of hot pants n small white t shirt clad beauties out to walk round the perimeter of the cages hoying free bags into the crowd. Very messy ‘appreciation’ from the fans. Well, it was the eighties…

Ah i just go wherever now, no longer have a season ticket. But the east corner, where the flag flew, was where I served my time as a kid late 70s onwards..

  • 33 lesh // Jun 13, 2016 at 7:33 PM

If Roma have been talking to Gini or his agent without having been given permission to do so, then surely they must be reported for doing so.

  • 34 lesh // Jun 13, 2016 at 7:39 PM

    England Germany final

  • 79 cyprus // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:05 PM

Italy surprising how solid they were. Deserved win made Belgium look pedestrian.

On transfers, possibly our two best players, ginei and Sissoko will be out early July.

  • 80 G // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:06 PM

@shirebrook, about as much chance of that as there is as my Mrs becoming thin and attractive.

  • 81 cyprus // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:07 PM

That young Belgium Liverpool player surely isn’t the best Belgium have on hand. Is he?

  • 82 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Impressed with Italy – played as a team – players knew their jobs – a lesson for NUFC don’t need be the best but goes along way playing as a team and for each other

  • 83 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:10 PM

@G I can’t see us beating Wales or Slovakia

  • 84 G // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:13 PM

@83, to be honest Ive never seen a tornament where my expectation level has been so low? After Brazil WC, with Woy still in charge 2 defeats to go wouldnt really surprise me.

  • 85 G // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:14 PM

I have Iceland in the sweep at work, I thoroughly expect them to perform better than England.

  • 86 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:15 PM

can see Milner starting against Wales

  • 87 G // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:17 PM

As thier full backs both play in League 1, he should do ok there, however, England will be predictable and complacent. 2-1 to the Druids I think?

  • 88 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:21 PM

i don’t want him to start as he was partly at fault for the Russian goal. Should keep the same team but play vardy instead of sterling

  • 89 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:27 PM

Belgium were a mess tactically. None of their attacking players were on the same wavelength coming forward. Haven’t seen them play recently, surprised by how disjointed they looked as they have done in the past. To be fair Italy were well organised and very cohesive, but Belgium were disappointing.

  • 90 Tsunki // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:27 PM

When Miller plays you know we have nothing left.

  • 91 Tsunki // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:28 PM

  • 92 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:28 PM

Yes Belgium were very one dimensional tonight.

  • 93 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:30 PM

@Tsunki agreed re Milner but woy loves him so you no he’s gonna feature at some stage in the game

  • 94 Mister Tuff // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:32 PM

Italy game was pretty good. Belgium never turned up really despite some of their big name players.
Better match to watch than the mechanised/robotic play of the Germans.

  • 95 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:33 PM

I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve never ever rated Milner for club or country.

  • 96 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:35 PM

I still can’t get over the fact that Giaccherini played at the stadium of shite for the unwashed!!

  • 97 Mister Tuff // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:35 PM

TOF – not so – since his days at Leeds Milner has never reached a higher level. He is a workhorse with a good engine – will cover well for other players and that is about it.
No great skill or creativity – I really do not see what others see in him.

  • 98 welshgeordie9 // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:37 PM

  • 99 ShirebrookToon // Jun 13, 2016 at 10:39 PM

Good evening to you too welsh!!

  • 100 jimmysmith // Jun 13, 2016 at 11:02 PM

Milner is a consistent 7 to 8 out of 10 EPL player, who does everything quite well. As a winger he can go past a fullback on either side and deliver a dangerous cross or cut back, as well as get up and down the flank. In the middle of the park, he shuts down players, gives and goes, and gets box to box. He’s a top pro, without being a standout player like a Rooney, or Alli, or Sterling. The criticism always surprises me.
