Tuttosport in Italy are reporting that Walter Sabatini, Roma’s Sporting Director, has already spoken with Gini Wijnaldum’s agent.
Roma’s Miralem Pjanic seems to be on his way to Juventus and is said to be in Turon today for his medical and Roma have for some weeks been linked with a move for Wijnaldum to replace Pjanic.
Gini Wijnaldum – Roma want him
What doesn’t make sense to us is Tuttosport are also reporting that Sabatini has told Gini’s agent to wait until the 30th of June before doing any business for his client, in order to comply with FFP regulations.
Players cannot be signed until the 1st July when the new financial year begins and the summer transfer window officially opens, but there’s no reason at all that negotiations cannot be going on before then.
That’s as long as they go through official channels like Sabatini lifts up the phone to talk to Newcastle, so we are a little skeptical of this report.
As for the fee, it’s supposed to be around €18m (£14.2M), which is around what we paid for him last July, so that’s not a surprise, but maybe Newcastle could get even more for the midfielder.
Rafa has said if players do move this summer, it will have to be for a very good fee, because Newcastle don’t have to sell any player.
All this stuff being reported in the papers really means nothing until Newcastle are contacted and get involved.
From what we can tell Rafa Benitez is keen to keep Gini Wijnaldum at the club – and we are almost sure Rafa will now be in contact with Gini’s agent trying to find out what’s going on – if anything.
Although he was Newcastle’s top scorer with 11 goals last season and our best player in the first half of the season – Gini did not play well in the second half of the season.
What do you think?
