Here’s Why Newcastle Will Try To Do Transfer Deals Early

3:11 pm, Tuesday, June 14th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 81 Comments

The news today in L’Equipe is that Hamburg SV had bid around £9.6M for Moussa Sissoko and there have been later reports in some outlets that Newcastle have told the German club to up their bid by £2M to £3M and it’s a deal.

Where that later report has its origins from we have no idea, but the Chronicle is reporting today it’s their understanding there has been no contact with Newcastle from any club for Moussa Sissoko so far this summer.

That includes Hamburg SV.

rafa benitez 876

Rafa Benitez – wants players in and out early

There have been enquiries for other players, but they do not include Moussa – who still has that burning desire to play for a top Champions League club like Arsenal – for instance.

His view is a world-class player should be playing Champions League football every season.

One of the problems Newcastle may have this summer is that with the Euros going on until July 10th, there will not be many players leaving the club early.

If some of our top players do leave, it’s likely to be in August and possibly late August at that.

One problem is if we do sell late in August there may not be time to bring in new players, which Rafa Benitez would insist on.

So in order not to get into that situation, Rafa will only accept offers for his top players if he can replace them this summer.

That hasn’t always been the case in the past, when money was king – but now the squad is king with Rafa in charge.

So if a deal for Sissoko, Wijnaldum or Janmaat is to happen this summer, presumably it will have to be in time for Rafa to bring in a replacement for the player leaving.

For players coming into the club, it looks like Rafa wants them in early and we’d be surprised if we haven’t signed our first new arrival by the time pre-season training starts in a couple of weeks time.

What do you think?

I’ve hesitated posting this because it seems too far-fetched but several recent links between Nico Gaitán of Benfica / Argentina and Rafa.

It could be old stuff from early last season when he was managing Real Madrid – just being regurgitated.

Get rid of sissoko now, not even worth 9 million.

  • 3 clinath@ed // Jun 14, 2016 at 3:42 PM

perfect. stick him in the middle of nowhere to be forgotten about.

  • 4 lesh // Jun 14, 2016 at 4:22 PM

There’s a risk we might be stuck with those keen to get out, but we should get replacements in for Gini, Sissoko, Thauvin, Cabella and Janmaat before pre-season.

  • 5 lesh // Jun 14, 2016 at 4:26 PM

    Jib

Are your Spanish Journo friends not around to clarify the situation?

Maybe a couple of glasses grappa might just help loosen their tongues?

    Is grappa not Italian?

Whilst checking out that Russian Ultra site yesterday I noted there was an image of an Englishman under the heading English Twitter Hooligan.
Reckon the Ultras must have compromised UK football blogs and discovered the picture . I reckon it must be Ian Toon/Carl/Jack Root. It was as I have always imagined him/them.

Anyone like to see kick-off countdowns at SJB
    as in the Euros?

  • 9 NUFCPaul // Jun 14, 2016 at 5:27 PM

Charlie in the Gallowgate – nah, not for me. I’ve been back to SJP only twice since I moved to the States in 2008 and hearing the theme from Local Hero right before kick-off still sent tingles down my spine. A Euro style countdown just wouldn’t be the same for me personally, but others will probably disagree!

  • 10 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 5:39 PM

No concrete offers yet Edd for any player. So much for the early business.

  • 11 NUFCPaul // Jun 14, 2016 at 5:40 PM

There’s another link for those in doubt about clubs being able to sign players before July 1st. That’s the last one, I promise.

  • 13 NUFCPaul // Jun 14, 2016 at 5:45 PM

jazzyp – do you mean we haven’t made any concrete offers? Or that we haven’t received any? And how do you know for sure that neither of those things have actually happened? All sorts of contact could be happening between clubs via fax, phone or email that we have no idea about.

  • 14 NUFCPaul // Jun 14, 2016 at 5:48 PM

Charlie – and the other half that are there to do the countdown would struggle to count backwards from five to one!

    Jail

Grappa is produced in Italy but so it is also made in Spain.

Surprised Jib didn’t pounce on to provide a link!

  • 17 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 6:24 PM

    Nufcpaul

What I mean by that mate is we have not signed anyone yet.
West Ham and Manure have made early break through’s in the transfer market….Mansfield town have 2 new players in already.
I don’t see any concrete info on any players yet to come in for the new season

  • 18 Jib // Jun 14, 2016 at 6:35 PM

    Wrong again Lesh.

Getting a bit tedious this is.

    Well done Jail

Grappa is now a protected name in the European Union. To be called grappa, the following criteria must be met:
Produced in Italy, or in the Italian part of Switzerland, or in San Marino.

There is a version of Grappa in Spain called Orujo – it’s much cheaper, stronger, and better tasting.

  • 19 NUFCPaul // Jun 14, 2016 at 6:40 PM

jazzyp – fair enough. Just confusing when you said ‘concrete offers’, which is not the same as ‘concrete signings’! Not meaning to be picky, just explaining why I wasn’t following what you said 🙂

  • 20 lochinvar // Jun 14, 2016 at 6:41 PM

£20 m each for Moussa and Gini from European based clubs – that has to be good business. If the Premier League clubs want then it will cost them more by our valuations because of the TV money.
Wonder what the players are thinking ?

“Moshiri wanted to make an appointment that would demonstrate the scale of his plans for Everton and Koeman fitted the bill …….
…… there is now a “northern powerhouse” of managers within 40 miles of each other with Koeman at Everton, Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.”

And Rafa breathing down their necks from 100 miles further north !

  • 28 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 7:54 PM

Just received this club statement lads!
“Due to the many complaints directed to the club about the Belgian midget strikers, we have now agreed to accept a pygmy striker from the Congo on a trial basis.”
    I think that’s only fair……

  • 30 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 7:59 PM

Also the rumours about Phil Gristle losing his place in the U-18 squad are completely untrue. Rafa recognizes real talent. Harrumph……

  • 31 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:03 PM

Are the club planning on releasing anyone else? I suppose it would have been done by now. What about Manny Riviere? Can we get anything for him? He’s 26 and looks like a billy goat. Is anyone interested in a non goal scoring striker? If so please contact the club immediately……

  • 32 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:05 PM

I’ve got me Thong of Gloom cleaned and pressed and ready to put on if we don’t do well against Wales. It’s just a precautionary measure……

  • 33 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:14 PM

How about a straight one for one? Manny Riviere to Millwall for Shane Ferguson. Joe Kinnear thought he looked like a decent player after all…..

  • 34 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:29 PM

Again, my apologies to beermonkey who thinks Riviere hasn’t been given enough chance. It would be a terrific boost if he were to come good under Rafa.

  • 35 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:32 PM

    G2
I would say Riviere has had as many chances as Goufran has bud.
Both need to be moved on

  • 36 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Current market value of Shane Ferguson: 750K euros. Worth 1.5M euros in 2013. A decent left side utility player but probably not in Rafa’s target list.

  • 37 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:35 PM

It’s a fair point jazzyp. I would say Gouffran played more often but neither were exactly awe inspiring. Gouffy was played out of position quite often by Johnny C. and Steve McMuffin. Hard to say what can be done with either at this point.

  • 38 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:37 PM

What do we do with Saivet? Is he worth keeping on? Looked average at best to me but the Championship is a different kettle of fish.

  • 39 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:39 PM

Keep saivet as we’ve not really seen much of him since he arrived in January 🙂

  • 40 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:41 PM

He could become a very useful player in the championship and premiership should we go up at the first time of asking

  • 41 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Saivet’s current market value is 2.5M euros. And he has 14 caps for Senegal. Just don’t know what Rafa will do with him. His market value fell by half from 5M euros after his season with us. Hmmmm.

  • 42 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:43 PM

But what about Dr. Evil with Colback and Tiote Shirebrook? Does Saivet fit into that ferocious threesome?

  • 43 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:44 PM

We paid 6M euros for Saivet. I hope his wage isn’t too high.

  • 44 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:47 PM

It provides a good competition for a starting spot as Gru has been poor since joining and copper top and Mr T have been the best of a bad bunch

  • 45 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Personally would sooner keep Mr T for another season in the championship and clear the likes of Saivet,Gouffy, Riviere,Haidara out.
I wouldn’t expect much in the way of transfer money,But would release places for incoming players that will be much needed for the riggers of the Championship

  • 46 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:50 PM

Anita would be a better shout as well

  • 47 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:52 PM

Anita is better at RB imo

  • 48 Jib // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:55 PM

Saivet is off to Nantes according to French media.
Apparently the only point of discussion is whether it’s a sale or a loan.

  • 49 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:55 PM

Some very pointy points there Shirebrook mate. So you’re saying keep Saivet but not Gouffy?

  • 50 jazzyp // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:57 PM

    Shirebrook
Maybe so mate but Saivet played under 2 managers at Newcastle and didn’t feature under any really, Even when we needed every man and his dog to try and stave off relegation.

  • 51 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 8:58 PM

Goufs time is up at Newcastle United G2

  • 52 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:00 PM

Have we given Haidara enough of a chance with all the injuries? He’s still young as well. I can see parting with Gouffy. He’s 30 now and won’t play much under Rafa I don’t think. Do we bring in a LB? Dummett seems to be improving and can step in at CB when needed.

  • 53 cyprus // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:02 PM

    Ed my man
The challenge stands. Don’t mention the words Rafa or Benitez in a single article in the next two months, you win. You can do it 🙂

  • 54 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:03 PM

When Janmaat goes we’ll need an understudy for Anita at RB won’t we? He did a very decent job there at the end of the season.

  • 55 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:04 PM

Jazzy I think maybe because he lacked experience in the Premiership and Rafa may have seen him as not yet up to pace with premiership football, I don’t know. Just think we’ve not really seen a lot of him to make a clear cut decision on the lad

  • 56 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:04 PM

And don’t mention Steve McMuffin either. He still thinks he did a wonderful job for us……

  • 57 cyprus // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:05 PM

    G2
You were able to assess Saivet in those two minutes we saw him? I’m impressed

  • 58 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:06 PM

If janmaat leaves I’d like to see us go for Cyrus Christie at Derby. Very good RB with pace and strength

  • 59 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:06 PM

I like Gru for Shelvey. It fits him better than Dr. Evil. How about The Wildebeest for Tiote?

  • 60 ShirebrookToon // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:07 PM

    Come on Iceland!!

  • 61 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:08 PM

I think it was more like 20 minutes total cyprus mate. It’s not a lot and I would be willing to give him more time but we may not have it. Rafa has a lot of decisions to make quite quickly.

  • 62 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:17 PM

What about Bigi and Vuckic? Are they still in with a shout? We have so many midfielders. Somebody would think our board and scouts can only really see midfielders as important players…..

  • 63 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:18 PM

Not to mention Remy Cabella, Stefan Brocolli and Liam Smith….

  • 64 GeordieTwo // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:20 PM

Manny Riviere: 26 appearances, 1 goal. He’s just warming up. This season he sees himself getting 2 goals……

  • 65 willowdalerez // Jun 14, 2016 at 9:22 PM

12 million for Sissoko? 30 million for Widjnaldum? Where were those figures reported? The Beano. There’s little between the pair. 15 for Sissoko and 20 for Widjnaldum seems far more reasonable, and only if you accept we’d take less for Sissoko because he’s given us 3 and a half years, we haven’t delivered as promised to him, and he wants to go.

On a side note. The hard core hooligan element needs to be strictly policed sadly. Surely we know that by now. The scenes we saw at Marseille occurred because a minority were given the latitude to do so. No alcohol for sale in the vicinity before or after, and a greater police presence at matches with a higher likelihood of crowd trouble are a necessity. That they weren’t that is the fault of the organisers unfortunately.

Putin won’t make the same mistake at the World Cup on “his” own home soil. He’ll make the opposite ones, and probably even throw a few ringleaders and prime suspects into detention for the course of the tournament. One or two might even disappear altogether.

    He knows this how exactly?

    It is highly plausible though.

There is of course a strong correlation between alcohol and violence, in all social interactions, and of course it’s not just ultras who can become violent at football matches.

  • 75 SPRINGY // Jun 14, 2016 at 10:22 PM

    evening all,
i would like to see mbabu at right back,as long he can remain fit..him,lascelles,mbemba and dummett would make a young strong powerful backline once they’ve played together for a while, that could possibly grow to be pretty solid as a unit…given time.

  • 76 jimmysmith // Jun 14, 2016 at 10:26 PM

Mbabu, Mbemba, Lascelles, and Dummett, are all decent players, but together they really do have the look of a Championship defence about them, when what need is one with more of an EPL one. I’d be very happy to keep Janmaat and get that big quality CB we’ve been missing in.

  • 77 outside the box // Jun 14, 2016 at 10:33 PM

springy and jimmy yep my thoughts as well….mbemba …..lascelles ,,,ano….dummett….with mbabu and hairdrier as back up ..if janmatt stays perm any 2 from 3 for centre backs …

  • 78 jimmysmith // Jun 14, 2016 at 10:39 PM

Rafa can go a long way to calming down the wantaways by making a major signing early. Very tough to do it from the Championship, but one real quality addition at CB, or CF, would almost guarantee this group come roaring back, and then, onwards and upwards.
