French newspaper L’Equipe is reporting that Newcastle have approached French club Nice about a deal for their 21 year-old striker Alexandre Mendy – maybe one for the future at Newcastle.
This seems a rather strange report to us as the news is that Mendy would prefer to join small French club Guingamp instead of a potential move to England.
21 year-old Nice striker Alexandre Mendy
One thing Rafa Benitez is trying to do this summer is to bring on one or two experienced strikers to Newcastle, but this seems to have been somebody that Graham Carr has been watching.
We were supposed to be turning away from recruitment in France to a large extent, because of some very poor buys over the last few years – the last two being wingers Remy Cabella and Florian Thauvin, who were both disasters at Newcastle.
L’Equipe are reporting that Newcastle have made a formal approach to try to sign Nice striker Alexandre Mendy and so have Bristol City, who are also in the Championship.
It seems the youngster is not keen at all on a move to England and seems more comfortable playing in his county of birth – and joining Guingamp who finished 16th in Ligue 1 last season.
He has played only 21 times for Nice and scored 6 goals and has had two loan spells at Olympique Nîmes where he played a total of 17 times with 3 goals.
The striker was born in Toulon, France and stands just over 6ft tall.
Seems a strange story somehow.
What do you think?

Comment #4A good way to write a bull s*** story. A team tried to buy a player, player turns it down. The deal didn’t get over the line.
In truth there was no deal at the first place. He’s turned us down even before we’ve offered anything for him.

Just what we need another young, relatively inexperienced, unproven striker! We already have Mitro, Ayoze, Armstrong, Toney and if we can’t sell him, Rivi. So yeah, lets bring in this lad Mendey… Thankfully I doubt Rafa would sanction such a deal. An already proven scorer please! 😉

Comment #6I remember when we were well in pursuit to sign Kingsley Coman when he was still at PSG.No idea how he ended up at Juventus and was surprising because considering he was still 18 or 19 that time, going to be difficult to get regular games at Juventus that he was seeking for.And As expected, that happened and ended up on loan at Bayern, where Pep do something to him and turned him.Why haven’t we pushed for him again,no idea.Same goes for Payet when he was young and at St.Ethiene.I’m guessing Rafa will sign players that are recommended by Carr still. No change there i suppose. It will have been great if Carr resign but hey ho,if he thinks Carr is still handy,we just have to wait and see the next possible caliber of players..

A 21 year old Andalucian born striker who plays for La Segunda side Gimnastic of Tarragona will be signed by Benitez according to the radio/tv station Cadena Ser in Valencia.

Villa , Betis , Celta Vigo – have all enquired – he has a €3 million buy out clause – but he has been recommended by his manager to join Rafa in the Championship.
He was a sensation in the Spanish 2nd tier last season.

Comment #11The BBC in Italy are saying a Roma representative is meeting with NUFC (relations are good between the clubs after Yanga-Mbiwa and Doumbia ) to discuss Wijnaldum.

Roma are talking €18 million for Wijnaldum.
Most feel €25 million is NUFC’s bottom price.
Edin Dzeko has twisted at moves from Roma to Besiktas and China.
He’s 30 but would chew up the championship.
Food for thought ?

yeah he would do for me but I doubt that he would for Rafa as he does seem to prefer a more mobile striker over a target man striker, his short time here also makes me feel that his view is as it was seeing that he preferred Cisse over Mitrovic when Mitrovic did to most people and certainly to me appear to be the more effective of the two.
You do need options and players who can change a game but with us already having Mitrovic I am expecting a more mobile type of striker, although I think that McCormack is over priced I can see how he could appeal to Rafa and his preferences.

Comment #15I would rather go for Danny Ings, we know he can tear the championship up as he has already done it and with Liverpool probably targeting the top four would they risk having Ings seeing as Klopp hasn’t had the opportunity to see him play, a years loan could suit all, do us for a season and give Klopp a chance to see him whilst having safer options at Anfield.

Comment #16Robert Lewandowski is a bit unsettled at Bayern Munich and has said that he is open to a move to the PL, seeing that some of his best days were at Dortmund under Klopp a deal could be had, could that open the door for us regards Ings, just a passing thought, but for me Ings would be ideal.
