Newcastle Move In For £15M West Ham Wonder Kid

The Sun is reporting today that Newcastle United have joined the race to sign West Ham United teenage sensation Reece Oxford, who plays as a defender and usually at center-back.

And the report is that the Magpies think they can convince the 17 year-old England U19 International to join them, because they will be able to give him first team football in the Championship next season.

But it’s not surprising that a youngster so good has some of the big clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal interested in him, after playing 12 times for the West Ham first team last season in all competitions – but only 7 times in the Premier League.

Manchester United have already reportedly bid £15M for the youngster – an initial £10M rising to £15M based on performances bonuses..

Reece Oxford – 17 year-old West Ham defender

It’s got to be a long shot for Newcastle to sign this top young player either permanently or on loan, since we are  now in the Championship – well at least for next season.

But it shows the new ambition at the club under Rafa Benitez, that we are reportedly trying to persuade a top young player to join us and to pay out maybe as much as £15M to get him.

He was born in Edmonton, in the north London Borough of Enfield and he supported Arsenal as a boy, but then joined the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, but was released in 2011.

It was then as a 12 year-old that he joined the West Ham United Academy.

Oxford made his debut for West Ham at the age of 16 years and 198 days, making him the club’s youngest ever player and he is considered one of the best young players in English football at the moment.

The young defender already stands 6ft 3ins tall and has turned down a new deal from the Hammers worth around £12K/week and it seems he wants to leave the east London club, but he still has two years left on his current deal.

Oxford played in West Ham’s first game of last season against Arsenal, but then he couldn’t hold down a regular place at the Hammers, so he wants to be playing first team football somewhere next season, but maybe in the Premier League.

Reece is obviously extremely ambitious and maybe the best chance Newcastle have is to have Rafa Benitez talk to him about the top side he is building on Tyneside.

The young center-back, who turns 18 in December can immediately be part of that new side.

Maybe a loan option is a possibility for Newcastle, which is one thing the Sun reports is a decent possibility.

What do you think?
