One of the things Rafa Benitez agreed with Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley before committing to Newcastle for the next three years was having decent transfer funds available for this summer and for next January to ensure the Spanish manager can build a good enough squad to get us promoted back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
Rafa will have been given a cash amount – maybe £20M(?) – plus the transfer funds of any players sold this summer.
One of those that are definite is the transfer of Remy Cabella to Marseille after being on loan there for all of last season.
Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager
Marseille newspaper La Provence reported last week the deal was done and dusted for £7.3M and so that money goes into Rafa’s transfer funds for this summer.
Since the new financial year beings on July 1st that’s the day the deal will be formally completed, but everything has been agreed with the French club.
It looks like we may have got almost all our money back on Cabella although exactly how much Newcastle paid for the winger has never been officially disclosed.
It’s been reported in the Chronicle today that Rafa turned down the chance to take a look at Cabella in pre-season and since Florian Thauvin is very much like Cabella in stature and playing style, it seems Rafa has already decided he doesn’t need Florian at Newcastle.
It’s a pity we cannot get a straight cash deal done for Thauvin this summer and it looks like he will go on loan at Marseille or some other club, if the south of France club cannot afford to pay Florian’s wages in full.
Now we are looking forward to some good players arriving on Tyneside – the first one hopefully before next Tuesday when the players report back for pre-season training.
