Newcastle Reported In Move To Sign US International

11:32 pm, Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 26 Comments

The Mail is reporting that Reading’s Danny Williams is a target of Newcastle United this summer.

Williams has been one of Reading’s best players over the last three years and had an excellent season last term.

He was born in Karlsruhe, West Germany and brought up in Germany and is the son of an African-American father and a German mother .

He was therefore eligible to play at the senior International level for either Germany or the United States.

Danny Williams – US International who plays for Reading

After getting a US passport in 2011 he was called up by the United States team for two friendlies in October 2011, and made his first appearance for the USA on October 8, 2011 in a 1–0 victory against Honduras.

That was a few months after Jurgen Klinsmann was appointed manager of the USA team.

According to the report in the Mail Aston Villa and Sunderland are also said to be interested in the player.

He has played 20 times for the US with two goals and seems to be in demand at the moment, with Newcastle having already contacted Williams’ representatives concerning a possible move to Tyneside.

He has played 109 times with 11 goals for Reading and in total has made 234 first team appearances with 15 goals in Germany and in England.

Danny is another Championship player we have been linked with this summer, but Rafa Benitez is still to make his first signing ever for Newcastle.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Help me understand why Williams’s dad’s colour got to do with the fact that he’s American?

    Why = what

    Bobbybee, Shirebrook

Yup, the similarity between two of your posts was uncanny.

Is this the same Danny Williams that topped the UK charts with a cover of Moon River?

If it is, we should sign him. At worst, he could provide the half-time entertainment!

It’s a pity that Wales and Northern Ireland have to meet at this stage.

Agree lesh. Italy and Argentina are normally my fav teams in tournaments but i have had great times in wales so delighted they are doing well.

Top 8 EPL quality? Isn’t that at least the type of signing we really need, otherwise what’s the point.

  • 10 jimmysmith // Jun 23, 2016 at 1:11 AM

I think we need players that have at least the potential to be part of a top 8 EPL squad, otherwise we’d be better off with the likes of Gouffran and Rivierre.

    Tiote’s replacement.

  • 12 expatmag // Jun 23, 2016 at 6:15 AM

Rafa will have his work cut out. It is fairly evident we will lose Sissoko Wijnaldum and probably Townsend and Janmaat too. That should raise much needed significant revenue.

However we are crying out for on field leadership in key areas down the spine.

1…..An experienced preferably british style big man and mouth in defence.

    2….A Kevin Nolan type captain.

    3….A creative central midfielder

    4… A proven goalscorer

5….At least two very quick widemen who can cross a ball.

These may not be readily available or cheap.

Expat thats potentially 7 players. We dont need that many IMO but we do need a lot. Maybe 4 first team and quality reserves. Striker, centre back, full back, winger for sure. Rafa needs to get a move on. I cant imagine he will be shopping at the euros…

Maybe not at the moment but once Rafa ships out more deadwood like Colocconi Ameobi Vuckic Bigi to join the likes of Taylor Obertan and Marveaux, there will be plenty of spots up for grabs.

The likes of Cisse Tiote and Saviet could also go and Doumbia will need rracing roo

    Replacing too

Isn’t Roo a character in Winnie the Pooh?

I hope cracks don’t start appearing in the Charnley/Rafa friendship when Rafa is saying we need to pay xM for so and so and Churners is on the phone to Mikey being told to pay a quarter of that and trying to offload Sammyobi for 5M in to the bargain.

    We’ll know soon enough!

  • 19 martoon // Jun 23, 2016 at 7:31 AM

Munster Mag @13 – I heard an interview this morning with Rafa. While players may not be at the Euros he said that a lot of club officials and agents are which makes it difficult to do deals at the moment!

  • 20 jimmysmith // Jun 23, 2016 at 7:34 AM

As things stand he needs to replace Obertan, Marveaux, Doumbia, and Taylor, none of them particularly imposing players, and might just draft in the likes of Armstrong, Sterry, Good and Ameobi if he can’t get the targets he really rates. They’ll be looking at lots of deals, but that doesn’t mean they’ll get done. We are probably a decent shout at picking up two or three good loanees though.

The same day (24th July) as Peter Beardsley’s kids play PSV Eindhoven in the Steel Cup at Corby.
The big boys will be in Eastern Flanders , Belgium

    What position does he play?

  • 23 Jib // Jun 23, 2016 at 7:57 AM

I can especially recommend the Bruges beer festival.

  • 24 Jail for Ashley // Jun 23, 2016 at 7:58 AM

Rafa, unlike McCardew was not desperate for this job. Rafa, like McCardew knew exactly who and what he was dealing with and the flaws in the system. Rafa, unlike McCardew has outlined what was wrong and has set out to change it in order to be successful, if, despite assurances Mikey decides to fcuking it up, like Ron Knee says, we’ll know soon enough.

  • 25 Jib // Jun 23, 2016 at 8:00 AM

    Attacking mf / winger

  • 26 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 23, 2016 at 8:15 AM

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I just don’t feel at ease while Charnley is still around. I trust him about as far as I could throw Ashley and he roped together. Mind you, if I had them roped together, some petrol and a match…..
