There’s a really good, light-hearted and maybe even true statement from Bristol City manager Lee Johnson this morning, after the Championship League fixtures were announced at 9:00 am today.
Newcastle kick off the season on Friday night, 5th August at Craven Cottager in a televised game – the very first game of the Championship season.
Lee Johnson admits he doesn’t think Rafa Benitez will even know who he is when we travel to Bristol City in late August.
Lee Johnson – Bristol City manager
But Rafa is meticulous in his planning and is a well=known workaholic and he will know more about Bristol City and Lee than they realize.
Newcastle visit Ashton Gate on August 20th and this is some of the comments Lee made to the Bristol Post about the game and about Rafa’s visit:
“I doubt Rafa Benitez will even know who I am when he shakes hands with me before kick-off!”
“I doubt he’s thinking, Oh my God, I’ve got to go up against Lee Johnson early on in the season.”
“On a personal level, I’m looking forward to the challenge.” “Every coach wants to test himself against the best and I’m no different.”
“It doesn’t get much tougher than coming up against two managers who have won the Champions’ League.”
“To have those games in the space of a week is even more exciting.”
“I know it will be down to the players who go onto the field on the day, but I’m really excited at the prospect of us playing Villa and Newcastle.”
35 year-old Lee Johnson only took over at Bristol City in February and was previously the Barnsley manager and the midfielder played for City until just four years ago; he also had a long spell playing at Yeovil Town.
Rafa will take nothing for granted in these games and we just have to get promoted back to the Premier League this season.
That’s job one.
