Benitez Springs A Surprise For First Newcastle Signing

12:14 pm, Tuesday, June 28th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 17 Comments

We had reported earlier today that Newcastle had been linked with 24 year-old Belgium U21 goalkeeper Matz Sels,  who plays at Gent and he was reported in the Belgium press as on his way to the north-east to sign either for Newcastle United or Middlesbrough.

Since then things have really been moving fast and in fact Matt is now in Newcastle taking his medical with the agreed fee said to be around 6M which is around £5M now with the weaker pound since the Brexit result.

We had wondered why Rafa would sign another goalkeeper – unless Tim Krul was leaving.

Matz Sels – first summer signing

It looks like Tim may be on  his way to Everton as a replacement for the departed Tim Howard and he could be joining new Dutch manager Ronald Koeman there.

The news in Belgium is that Tim has refused to sign a new contract at the club he has been at for 11 years and that may have forced Benitez’ hand.

Southampton, Middlesbrough and Champions Leicester are other clubs said to have been keen on signings Matz, but it looks like Rafa won out against all three Premier League clubs.

Nothing official about Tim’s future yet and he is still recovering from a serious ACL injury.

The other shoe about to fall is almost certain to be Tim’s transfer to Everton.

Certainly Newcastle should have no goalkeeper problems for the forseeable future.

So Rafa has sprung a bit of a surprise, but even if Tim leaves we have three good experienced goalkeepers fighting it out for the number one goalkeeper position in Matz Sels, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot when he’s fit again.

That will allow Freddie Woodman to go out on a season long loan deal and get the first team games he desperately needs to continue his development.

Freddie is an excellent young goalkeeper prospect at Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

TK is injury prone, horribly so, when he was at his best he still missed chuncks of actions left right and centre

The Krul situation had to be sorted out as first order of business, we cannot have him running down the last 12 months of his contract.

Krul has either refused terms of a new deal, or the club isn’t offering a new contract, and believe they can sell in the upcoming window.

The goalkeeper merry-go-round has affected the club’s points tally in the previous 2 seasons, it will be great business if we can shift on the sick-note goalkeepers and end the running saga every weekend, of checking who is fit to play in nets.

If Tim is on it’s way he has clearly had Newcastle in his heart and put in some outstanding performances over the years.
His last injury must have hit him quite hard and certainly given him time to reflect on last season. If he decides it’s time for a change then so be it – good luck to him.

    Sels height is 1.88m = 6.16ft

Seems on the short side, but it is the same height as Hugo Lloris, who isn’t troubled with his size.

How long has this Bentiez been at the club?

  • 8 G // Jun 28, 2016 at 12:38 PM

Krul is an excellent shot stopper, but his distribution is terrible anyway. Lets hope Sels is decent at both, worst case scenario is we have at least 2 keepers with the relevant attributes for the Champo in Darlow / Elliot, and with a bit of luck Sels is better than both.

Benitez did say the first one needed to be sorted then two or three more would follow. I think that was making sure we had the Krul replacement (this) and then Krul could be sold as could maybe another one or two along with their replacements. We’ll see but I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a flurry of activity.

Given I hadn’t seen us linked with Sels before this, the others could also be relative unknowns or at least players not linked before.

    Benitez joined us 11th March.

Sane has joined Liverpool for £30+ million lol. After spending that amount on Benteke, you would think they would have learned. I would be surprised if that is a Klopp signing.

I reckon Mane is a Klopp signing. Tricky fast forward player. He’s in the mould of Reus, Aubameyang in style and position if maybe not ability.Quite like him, hes a livewire but 30m+ is robbery. I remember him from Salzburg when most teams in the bundesliga including klopps Dortmund wanted him but were all priced out as 11m for a player from the Austrian league is an obscene risk!

I said it would be madness to get rid of Krul unless they were planning to get another keeper, which they have done. I couldn’t believe the amount of people thinking it was OK to sell him with Elliott, Darlow and Woodman holding the fort. I think a fresh face was needed at the back as Krul has become accustomed to picking the ball out of the back of the net.

I haven’t posted for a while but read the blog. You constantly mention a host of bloggers including me in an insulting way. Just stop and I will stop mentioning you at all.

    Bye eye !

Well I never saw this one coming. However thinking about it Krul & Elliot may not be fit for the start of the season so it sort of makes sense or we may sell Krul as others have speculated.
I wouldn’t fancy the Southampton job – they are selling there best players before the new manager even gets appointed!

  • 16 AncientC // Jun 28, 2016 at 1:09 PM

jayphoto – BBC are reporting the fee for Mane is £34 million, rising to £36 million, probably based on appearances.

I would have expected Klopp to get better value for money, rather than splurging similar to last summer when Liverpool paid £30 million for Firmino & £30+ million for Benteke.

Liverpool were interested in Matip before Klopp was installed, but signed after Klopp was in place.

It all looks like a familiar theme for Liverpool.

You should start train spotting pal. Mane is outstanding worth the 30 odd million all day long
