Matz Sels Passes Medical – Will Sign Five Year Deal Today

Matz Sels passed his medical yesterday at Newcastle and has agreed terms on a five year deal according to Belgium outlet Sports Wereld.

The deal could not be announced yesterday since there were still some details to work out,  but it’s expected Rafa Benitez’ first signing will be announced by Newcastle some time today.

Matz Sels – will join Newcastle today

Sels has been in excellent form for Gent over the last two seasons and he has starred in the Champions League for the club and has attracted Newcastle as a goalkeeper who takes control of the penalty box.

The Belgium outlet comments that Newcastle is a surprising choice for the 6ft 2ins Belgium U21 goalkeeper,  since the club has only just been relegated to the Championship in England.

They also say that Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper Tim Krul is now expected to leave the club.

Everton’s new Dutch manager Ronald Koeman has certainly been interested in the player, who is recovering from a bad ACL knee injury.

There are also expected to be more signings this week with 25 year-old Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle expected to be one of the players coming in.

However, Crystal Palace are expected to themselves make a £13M bid for Newcastle’s England winger Andros Townsend – maybe even today.

There are reports the former Tottenham winger is even leaning towards leaving Newcastle, so he can get back to playing Premier League football next season, which gives him a better chance to play for England.

That would mean he has been at Newcastle for a very short six months, when he looked to be one of our best players.

Townsend leaving so early in the summer would be a big loss for Newcastle and for Rafa Benitez, but Newcastle are pushing Townsend for an early decision, so that if he does leave the manager will have ample time to bring in a suitable replacement.

Hope Rafa is on board with this five year deal malarky it’s not done us much good as a policy in the past. A big risk of getting lumbered with dross.

Bit of a coup by all accounts though I wasn’t that impressed by the highlights clip I saw time will tell

Look forward to the rest coming in still a lot for Rafa to sort out

Matz Selz and Dwight Gayle in, Andros Townsend and Tim Krul out. Why am I not feeling excited here? I guess that’s the way it goes for a second tier team.

Gayle in, Townsend out? What a hugely uninspiring start to the transfer season. Palace chase the 30 mill Brazilian and we chase Gayle. How we have fallen . It will disappoint Rafa hugely, and knock him back I’m sure, if he cant keep some of his top players, and Andros seemed like a Rafa/Toon loyalist. Hope this is wrong but there’s nothing to say its nonsense.

    The overrated Frenchman

People didn’t rate Elliott or Darlow at first.

I remember folks saying that Townsend was being sold by Spurs because he wasn’t very good and they wanted to get rid of him.

And yes that’s the way it goes for a second tier team.

That puts your howler/fact ratio to 1/-10. You’re getting nearer to redemption.

Last season Krul and Elliot got injured in the first couple of games each time the replacement looked shaky and we dropped points as the opposition bombarded us at Norwich and West Brom away !

If we had been better prepared with a more experienced keeper who didn’t look like a bag of nerves we probably would have got 6 points rather than 0 ! Would have kept us up !

Munster – I was just thinking that. It’s going to be an awful lot of pressure on Rafa if the team is stripped of it’s better players and replaced by unproven/inferior ones. He’s a manager not a miracle worker. With the grubby little fingers of Charnley and Carr still in the pie I am fearful.

I don’t think he will be overly disappointed as he is a realist. He knows the situation he signed up for. Top players want top clubs. I believe players are only loyal to themselves with the odd exception.

We have to accept that not every player will be as keen to take on a Championship club in the way our saintly manager has done. The targets we would have had if we’d stopped up will simply have to be different to the ones we have now, it is the extra hurdle of attracting players to the club and then finding a balance sited to the Championship and being good enough to step up.

Given the heroics that Elliott and Darlow performed in goal we would have been dead and buried weeks, possibly months before the final game.

Those two keepers did not get us relegated.

The reason we were relegated was the lack of goals. There were too many games where we lost one nil or drew one all.

I personally don’t see what Gayle is going to bring to the squad that we havent already got.Arma banged in 20 odd goals for Coventry,So surely would do the same for Nufc.
As many have said a very uninspiring start to the transfer window

Oh yeah totally agree the lack of goals over the season was a contributing factor as well as conceding goals and injuries being the other ones….but in those games where Darlow had to come in and looked shaky it cost us 6 points. Fine margins!

Having to play midfielders at full back and all the other weird formations because we never had a left winger cost us points and also meant our team was unbalanced so couldn’t create enough chances because every attack came down the right wing.
