Report – Townsend Still Keen To Stay At Newcastle

Sportsmail’s Simon Jones has reported today that Newcastle winger Andros Townsend may not be leaving Newcastle after all and still wants to stay at Newcastle.

But that news is in a throwaway line when Simon is discussing the imminent transfer of Palace striker Dwight Gayle to Newcastle, but it seems to have caused a Twitter storm online with Geordie fans very anxious to see Andros stay.

Andros Townsend and Rafa Benitez

This is the piece in the Mail on Wednesday that is leading to Twitter being on fire with the potential good news:

Staying with Newcastle…

Sportsmail’s Simon Jones brings us an update on the future of Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, who has been linked with a move away:

Newcastle have held further talks over a £10million move for Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle.

Sportsmail reported at the weekend that Newcastle had revived their interest from earlier in the season and are pressing to get a deal agreed ahead of pre-season training.

Gayle also has interest from Fulham who see the 25-year-old as a direct replacement for Ross McCormack.

McCormack has interest from Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull and Newcastle and can leave for £12M.

Gayle scored seven goals last season and signed a new long-term contract but has failed to cement a first team place under Alan Pardew.

Newcastle are expecting Palace to trigger Andros Townsend’s £10.5M release clause though the winger is keen to stay with Rafa Benitez.

That’s all we can find from today and other bits on Rafa Benitez trying to get Andros to stay are from earlier  this month when Rafa reportedly met with the former Tottenham winger.

It does seem an odd move for Andros to want to move to Crystal Palace, who had a club-record £32M bid accepted by Marseille for Belgium forward Michy Bathsuayi two days ago – but it looks like he will move to Chelsea.

Maybe the way Palace can attract Andros back to London so soon is to offer him huge wages – but like QPR did to derail the Newcastle deal to buy Remy Cabella back in January 2013.

The Chronicle reported earlier this week that Andros had recently bought some property in the Newcastle area – and that was taken as a hint he was staying.

Crystal Place are still expected to launch a bid for Townsend and it’s been assumed Newcastle’s pursuit of right winger Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth was as a replacement for Townsend.

There are even reports that no deal for Townsend will be done until Rafa gets Ritchie signed – hopefully before the end of the week.

So it’s not clear at all if Townsend still wants to stay on Tyneside.

Comments welcome.

Delighted if he does stay, if he must play in the Prem this season, not against him going on loan.

Townsend has no clause in his contract. All the reports that teams have triggered the clause on his contract is non sense.

What makes you think that. Keith Downie from sky sports says there is a release clause

I guess it makes sense that Townsend could be on his way and Ritchie would be a replacement. Awful to lose Townsend though and deffo a puncture in Rafa’s balloon

Absolutely chuffed to see Gayle on his way here, and amazed that Ritchie might be joining him. Two very well established Premier League players, who will be outstanding in the Championship.

If we could add Robbie Brady to those two, I think we’d be pretty much unstoppable. A few days ago I would have thought that impossible, especially after his displays in the Euros, but maybe not now. Hendrick would be another I’d go for, and Ings or Rodriguez for another option up front. Keep them coming Rafa!

I think the best news of the night has to be the fact Southgate doesn’t want the England job.

I’d let Shearer have it all day long. He can’t do any worse than the previous yes-men chumps.

I posted earlier today that until we hear from Rafa or Andros that he’s leaving, it’s still just paper talk. We’ve signed three players, none of whom were mentioned as targets by the know all press. If there is a release clause, it doesn’t mean that whoever triggers it signs the player. All it does is allow the team to talk to said player. Andros ain’t a mug. Why would he choose Palace – potential relegation fodder – when better offers are likely? Be coached by Rafa, or Pardew? Of course, he might choose the PL over us, but until I hear it from Rafa or Townsend himself, I’m simply not having it. Rafa has just persuaded two PL players to drop down a league to join his project. Don’t underestimate his powers of persuasion, that’s all I’m suggesting. Pardew wouldn’t pick HBA either, and look at him now. He wouldn’t pick Gayle either, but he finished up their top scorer. If Andros goes, he goes, but right now he’s still our player and is fully aware what Rafa did for his career.

Martoon – maybe the shiny new medics won’t prevent injuries, more likely the 4g resurfaced training surfaces, and the training techniques that aren’t rooted in English boot and sprint football of the 50’s.

It looks like Palace are agreed with Nu to trigger his release clause but Townsend has not decided on his future yet. What I don’t understand is Palace already have Zaha and Blaise on the wings so why do they need another winger?

On the subject of Gayle,Me and couple of others were suggesting that we could have signed a better player with that kind of fee.The guy is not favored by 3 palace mgrs.Couldn’t hit the first team for 2 or 3 seasons and is 25 or 26,hardly going to improve. They tried to sell him/loan him many times, but no takers. He is physically small and runs with his head down like headlines chicken.Poor signing and is about to get 5yr contract. The best business would have been to get him on loan.Poor move by Rafa & his team.

We could probably have signed a better striker if we were still a oremiership team…….but we arent so we havent.

Next best thing is a couple if british born players, mud 20s, proven championship records and premiership experience……not to be sniffed at.

Matt Ritchie; never saw him but still for 12m,
we can bring a better player like Antonio Valencia oxlade-Chamberlein,Jordan Ibe etc etc. That agn looks overpaying for a player who is untested at a higher level.I would like to be proved wrong ofcourse but still hardly inspiring move.

The most interesting bit here is “Newcastle revive their interest from earlier in the season”. We were linked with him in January and it obviously now seems there was some truth in that. It would therefore suggest this is a Carr signing rather than a Benitez one. I would suggest it’s the same for the other two as Carr scouts a lot in Belgium.
So Rafa is not picking all the players then.

Can some please explain to Veltman that we’re in the Championship and that Valencia might not only want to not come here but also might not be up for Doncaster away on a Tuesday night. The players we have bought serve a dual purpose, the fees are high because the PL has just got even richer. As for Pulis, Warwick and Pardew not rating him, three notorious hoofball dinosaurs, says it all.

wake up sonny. We are NOT a premiership team therefore we CANNOT expect to attract top quality players.

Talk of Palace trying to get rid of Gayle for a number of seasons is nonsense. They priced him out of moving if you bother to examine the facts. He turned down a Bristol City move. As for those saying that they haven’t seen Ritchie play but it’s not a good signing then likewise.

What do you mean by untested at a higher level, he managed 36 out of 38 games in a Bmouth team widely expected to face the drop and surprised everyone with a gutsy campaign and good football.

Pardew did rate him but wanted to play a defensive form of 4-2-3-1 with Wickham or Adebayor favoured. Their best football for months was in their last home game when they beat Stoke 2-1 with Gale playing alongside Wickham and scoring both goals. Mitro and the pacy Gale would be a good pairing.

The new manager of San Lorenzo – the Uruguayan Diego Aguirre has had informal contacts with NUFC (probably a phone chat with Rafa) – they seem to still really covet Fabricio Coloccini.

The phrase you mention may indicate that we were interested in Gayle in January when it seemed McClaren was directing transfers. Whilst Carr remains he is no longer the main man (nor Charnley) when transfers are being targeted. Even if Rafa is looking at players scouted by Carr he would be stupid to simply ignore his own judgement because of that.

On wider points I am not exactly overwhelmed with the level of player we are being linked with (and buying) but as Expat and Jail point out we are in Championship and have to cut our cloth accordingly.

My faith in Rafa’s judgement is unimpaired and I trust that he knows what he is doing.

Of course our faith in Rafa is not necessarily mirrored by every potential target of his whilst we face next season away from the bright lights of PL. Next January if riding high or next Summer if promoted then let’s see what difference that makes.

I also trust him to deal with any want away players for the benefit of the Club – if they do go then it will be when he says and at a price commensurate with his rating of their worth.

If Townsend does go then it will be because of an apparent clause (reasonable when he was bought?) but not of Rafa’s making.

No need for panic as yet.
