Andros Townsend Decides To Leave Newcastle – So Be It

4:28 pm, Thursday, June 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 43 Comments

The Telegraph is reporting that Newcastle have lost the battle to keep Andros Townsend on Tyneside and after the 24 year-old made positive noises about staying at Newcastle at the end of the season.

The news is that he will sign on for Crystal Palace for £13M in the next couple of days as Palace have activated the release clause in his contract.

You cannot win them all and we would have loved to have kept Andros on Tyneside but he wanted to leave – and given that’s the case – so be it.

Andros Townsend – will leave Newcastle

The Chronicle is reporting Newcastle tried to get a one year loan deal arranged but Palace insisted on a permanent deal.

Rafa Benitez is very busy in the transfer market at the moment as he tries to build a dominant squad that can win the Championship at the first attempt next season, while at the same building the foundations of what can become a powerful Newcastle side in the next few years.

With the transfer activities of the last few days the odds of Newcastle winning the Championship have dropped down to 15/8 and we remain clear favorites to win the thing – like we did seven years ago when we were first relegated from the Premier League.

Those are the lowest ever odds on a team to win the Championship ever.

Here are the latest odds from Betfair for clubs to win the Championship next season:

Newcastle 15/8
Aston Villa 8/1
Norwich 9/1
Derby County 12/1
Brighton 14/1

Certainly Rafa Benitez is having a huge impact at Newcastle United and it’s great to have a world-class manager on Tyneside after our last few managers have been mediocre at best.

Comments welcome.

still a big gap in quality defenders we wont win it if we go with what we have

  • 3 Veltmann // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:34 PM

    Ya, he came,he saw,he left..

The Chronicle understands that a move to loan Townsend to the Eagles for a season long deal also fell through after Palace made it clear they wanted nothing but a permanent deal.

fck towns END if he don’t want to play for NEWCASTLE UNITED especially now then I don’t want him anywhere near my team let him go and take all the other whining players who don’t want to be here and help us get back

  • 7 Belfast // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:41 PM

    Yer right Veltman!

  • 8 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:46 PM

    You a Yarpie mann ?

  • 9 MadisonToon // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:55 PM

So Townsend worked his socks off and almost kept us up (not on his own but he did a lot more than most). We sell him for slightly more than we bought him for and we don’t have to pay him Prem wages in the Championship and we don’t have to up his wages significantly beyond what we would want to pay him to keep him here this summer (likely only way to keep him)? I’d like his quality crosses next season, but we knew he was very unlikely to stay and that might be the right move for the club.

The overall impact of Townsend on Newcastle over the last 6 months – good playing, reinvigorating the fans, made us money as we are selling for more than we bought – is a really good piece of business for Newcastle. Maybe not what fans want, but much better than transfer dealings of the previous few years.

    June 30th 2016

Forever to be known as the day of treachery.

Gove stabs Johnson in the back.

90% of the Parliamentary Labour Party stab poor Jezza in the back.

Andros Townsend turns his back on the man who revived his career.

  • 11 Veltmann // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:14 PM

For the record,I’m not complaining about Townsend.I already accepted his departure few days ago.

Jib – don’t insult me if you are.My heart this morning told me u are my favorite person:)

  • 12 davetoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:15 PM

Rafa must have known he was going and also a few others. That explains the influx of players and rumours of players.

  • 13 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:16 PM

Jib…… And you stab Veltman in the bollox with the most derogatory insult that exists if he is from S.A. Maybe he deserves it though, he has been very negative.

  • 14 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:20 PM

I’m glad Boris has gone. The guy is passionate and smart enough under that facade but he just doesn’t present well. He just needs a red nose and a balloon on a stick.

  • 15 Jail for Ashley // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:23 PM

I have to ask to clear this up. Are you aware that we were relegated at the end of last season.

  • 16 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:24 PM

Townsend was standout in a very poor team but not everything he did worked. He’s good but not great and anyway who can blame him – PL footy even with Pardew’s desperate tramps is still PL footy. He did a job, and if we turn over good money then it’s good for all concerned, so thanks, andros ( waves bye bye).

Also it’s worth considering that he might have stayed if a decent offer was on the table here, but Rafa might have decided he’s not crucial after all and let him fly the coop.

  • 17 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:26 PM

Mmmmmm Boris and Jib – comedy double act – has potential.

  • 18 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:26 PM

Job you might have just cast off your number one fan…..well…er… your fan…

  • 19 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:27 PM

    Job? Jib.

  • 20 Moonraker15 // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:30 PM

I’m surprised Townsend’s choosing Palace over 1 season in the fizzy pop. London obviously, but I’ve got them down for relegation next season with King Percy at the helm. He will drift back into obscurity down there.
Still he was good for us just too late! Move on!

  • 21 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Tsunki………. Was the fly the coop comment intended as a chicken reference ?

  • 22 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:30 PM

Not fussed about Townsend – he wanted away and so be it – back to London.
Pardew will Pardew him and there will be arguments about him playing in a role he’s not comfortable with.
Better having folk who want to play for the club – he did not only problem is we do not have an additional forward (Gayle just replaces Townsend).

  • 23 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:37 PM

Betty you obviously have never been to the Karoo.
I worked in Kimbereley for two years.

If Yarpie is an insult , I played rugby with a lot of Boers who loved insulting themselves.

  • 24 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:39 PM

Betty it can be if you want it to be. It was just my poultry offering.

  • 25 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:39 PM

Townsend probably would have benefitted personally by being coached by Benitez -clearly not sufficient to make him stay. He will I’m sure rue the day he made this decision.

  • 26 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:40 PM

Jib…. I think they must have been addressing you as a Yarpie as it is definitely very insulting.

  • 27 Goromagpie // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:40 PM

I think Gayle is sh!t.But Richie might be good squad player.
I hope caulker is not on the transfer list.
    Dunk exites me.

  • 28 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:40 PM

So we letting Townsend go to palace for a medical even though we haven’t signed Ritchie yet, that’s if we after him of course, what a load of crap, so we are replacing and not adding to the squad, ffs.

  • 29 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:41 PM

I think Vltmann must be Dutch.
There was loads of Veltmanns in the North Cape.

  • 30 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:41 PM

What’s this about poultry – I can give loads of tips.
For instance – a broody hen – get her underparts cooled with some iced water – usually does the trick.

  • 31 ShirebrookToon // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:44 PM

Bye bye andros. We’ll wave to you on the way past at the end of the season

  • 32 Goromagpie // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:45 PM

Congo man , Wales are performing well. They have a tuff task ahead !

  • 33 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:45 PM

Betty everything is insulting theses days.
I was reading the other day that a radio station had to apologise for playing “Melting Pot ” by Blue Mink because it was rascist – what a farce !

  • 34 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:46 PM

Townsend’s a fool if he goes to Palace.

Pardew’s renowned for ruining players and it’ll not be long before it’s Townsend that’s being asked to play wing-back!

Daft move but there we go. At least Townsend’s agent’ll make something out of it – as the pariahs always do.

  • 35 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:46 PM

When wer eyou in SA sweatybetty ?

  • 36 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:49 PM

Not feeling optimistic at the moment with which players we are going to sign.

‘The name may be occasionally used as a mildly derogative ethnic slur or nickname for (particularly white, rural) South Africans, in which instance it is also spelt as it is pronounced: yarpie. This comes from the Afrikaans term plaasjapie, meaning “farm boy”.’

    from wiki

    mildy derogaty

    like the phrase

“shit stirring troublemaking blogposter who persistently insults the Welsh and should get a life”

  • 39 Goromagpie // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:53 PM

Sky sports also reporting Townsend having medical at palace

  • 40 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:54 PM

    derogatory even

  • 41 JamesToon // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:55 PM

Losing Townsend is a big blow, nobody can debate that. His directness, weak foot ability as well as his left foot and his work rate will be missed, however Matt Ritchie is the best replacement we can ask for. He may not be as direct/quick as Townsend, but he ticks all the other boxes, and is proven at both levels

  • 42 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 5:55 PM

There’s no way Pardew’ll take Palace down.

Sure as hell if Palace are near relegation by Christmas or earlier, Percy’ll be sacked. The owners won’t pi$$ about like Charnley did with us.

  • 43 ashleysmate // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:49 PM

The townshend case just about sums up what’s wrong with football at present
6 month ago he was praising Rafa and Co for giving him a new lease of life after the doom and gloom at spurs.
But as soon as he gets a chance to return to the smoke he can’t sign quick enough for pards…who by the way will be in the same position as us come next may
Some of these kids have no loyalty and can’t see past their nose
That’s why after 50 yrs of watching football… sorry. soccer. I’m becoming bored and less interested with these shallow individuals who will eventually ruin the globes most popular sport… my opinion
