I wonder which defenders Rafa has lined up. I would be happy with Skrtel. He called Klopp a dickhead so he’s okay in my book.

  • 2 Bambams // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:32 PM

I hope we do get a CB and I hope he has pace.

The championship is a difficult league to play in and you need a bit of everything.

Lascelles will benefit hugely from an experienced CB. Really rate Lascelles and was worried a PL team may have come in for him.

Just hope Rafa gets his team sorted early, if you are leaving than hurry up and find a club. If not pick a peg and let’s get on with it.

Disappointed Townsend is leaving, can’t see why we can’t just loan him out for a season. Suppose if he doesn’t want to be here than its better for the team to allow him to go.

RB and LB to come in….Still think Janmaat might leave.

  • 3 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:33 PM

I think according to some reports Benitez wants up to six players, hopefully by sometime tommorow with Gayle and Ritchie signed up that would be 3, so that would a goalkeeper, forward and a winger signed, so three players left that should be two central defenders because there’s no Taylor and if reports are true no colo, so where would the last position be.

  • 4 martoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:33 PM

I reckon they are going to officially announce Gayle and Ritchie together, tomorrow to coincide with the first day of training. That should be a shot in the arm for the returning players.

  • 5 Rotonda heights // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:33 PM

Surely that should be the other way round. Klopp seems a top bloke, while skertel is a shaven headed, tattooed, neanderthal thug.

  • 6 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:35 PM

Novo, Skrtel’s a liability on set pieces though. Closest thing i’ve seen to a human-cross-octopus 😉

  • 7 davetoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:36 PM

    This is some game

  • 8 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:36 PM

Biggest problem of all Benitez has got sort to out is that which players are we going to sign if sissoko and gini goes, hope he’s got players in mind.

  • 9 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:36 PM

    Portusgal equalised. 🙁

  • 10 davetoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:37 PM

And what a goal it was!

  • 11 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:39 PM

i think Benitez wants the new players to do a full months training, that’s why he wants them in early.

  • 12 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:40 PM

Welshie, he had Ritchie in mind before we knew Andros intended bailing out, so it’s fair to assume he’ll have every angle covered. The guy’s a workaholic and leaves nothing to chance. The past has gone mate, this is Rafa. He won’t get caught out.

  • 13 Novocastrian66 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:41 PM

He doesn’t seem to be a top bloke to me. Obviously I do not know him personally, he just isn’t my cup of tea.

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:41 PM

I’m also disappointed that Townsend has gone and can only think that it is personal reasons that he has wanted to move his lass is happier in London, it surely can’t be for footballing reasons as he is going to stagnate under Pardew. I won’t be wishing him well and saying I don’t blame him, he signed a four year deal preparing to live up here and I think he is a shallow pr!ck who is too thick too see the bigger picture. I hope Palace stay up by the skin of their teeth next year so he has to play in front of us lot.

  • 15 ShirebrookToon // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:42 PM

Rafa will have another winger up his sleeve to replace Townsend

  • 16 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:45 PM

Bobbybee – first attended SJP in 1965 if my memory serves me correctly.
Not really surprised at what players say – but when their utterings are all put together in a one time read it seems to have more impact upon the reader. Have you read the compilation yourself – I would be surprised if you did not agree with the author of the piece who suggested treachery. I can see his point.

  • 17 giimps // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:48 PM

May not be wingers as such we get, it depends how Rafa wants us to play and which formations he is going to employ.
Rafa may not know what he needs till he gets everyone back who’s coming back and sees them together

  • 18 Mister Tuff // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Jib Jibberish – have you tried to work out why you makes so many gaffes.
Have you considered getting a new pair of shoes.
Image of Jib putting his shoes on :-

  • 19 martoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:49 PM

Welsh @11 – I agree he definitely wants to get players in early so they have preseason to integrate and gel into the team. Really is a refreshing change instead of last minute panics on transfer deadline day.

  • 20 Laurent Robert 32 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:54 PM

Shame Townsend will head off to Palace. They have Bolasie and Zaha already. Will Bolasie play more centrally regularly?

I guess he didn’t read Alan’s 2 league wins in 2016 or whatever it ended up being. Happy stay as a full-back, Andros.

Looking forward to seeing how Matt Ritchie will do.

  • 21 Novocastrian66 // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:55 PM

Wow. What a fantastic summary of the first half from Ryan Giggs. ZZZZZZZ.

  • 22 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 8:56 PM

Mr tuff, when we first went there was loyalty, that was rewarded with a testimonial, but times have changed beyond belief. They don’t need a testimonial anymore, with their wages. It stinks sadly. The only loyalty nowadays is from the fans and the occasional local player. No doubt i would agree on the treachery, nothing shocks me re players anymore. I wasn’t having a dig marra, and i get your point entirely, i was just surprised you were surpried! They’re mainly money grabbing mercenaries and have been for years now.

  • 23 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:00 PM

Would still like to see us sign another striker / forward someone like Ings , Rodriguez or Mccormack as we need more goals and strength in depth

Also need more creativity in the middle especially if Wijnaldum and Sissoko are leaving as well as they do create lots of chances at home

  • 24 cyprus // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:01 PM

So one down two to go. Sissoko and Gini. Sissoko wants out he should be let to go. Hope we can keep Gini, he’ll be amazing with Rafa. Now for a CB and one more speedy winger

  • 25 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:03 PM

Really should look to be getting Robbie Brady and Will Hughes

Should have got Brady ages ago when we had the chance hes getting better every season and was class at the euros

Also wouldn’t mind Pritchard from Spurs to add some depth

  • 26 Novocastrian66 // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:06 PM

Bobbybee; Cannot blame the bloke for wanting to play in the top flight. I’m disappointed he has gone but he done his best for us while he was here, unlike some, even though he knew he had a get out clause. He could have took the money and not tried and bailed out. I believe money isn’t his motivation, he wants to play at the top level.

  • 27 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:07 PM

Hearing that Leicester are lining up a £15m bid for Yannick Bolasie #LCFC #CPFC

From Soccer Sauce so basically Townsend would be his replacement if that rumour is true

  • 28 hibbitt // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:09 PM

what about the the back 4 ???

  • 29 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:09 PM

I believe Roy not picking Townsend will have ultimately effected his decision massively to leave us

  • 30 jimmysmith // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:10 PM

Well Palace are a London club, and also ambitious, and its a great atmosphere at Selhurst Park, so it’s understandable. Pardew likes his wingers, and there’s the money of course.

He is well placed to sniff the wind and so the decision may well reflect a strong wider desire among “star”players to go, and so he’s gone first, because it’s easier for him than others due to the release clause.

A clear out wouldn’t be the end of the world, but t’s most unlikely to strengthen us in the short term.

  • 31 FollowFollow // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:11 PM

I’m cool on Townsend. He’s just an impact sub at prem level.

Do you think Rafa prefers your stand and deliver wide man (like Beckham, Nobby, Ritchie?) over runners like Townsend? Although Townsend comes inside and doesn’t get to the by line.

  • 32 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:11 PM

I dont think you will have to worry about that Rafa will get the defenders we need we wont be doing as much defending this year as we will hopefully be dominating teams ha ha

We do need better attacking options though because every team will park the bus at St James’s and our current lot struggle with that kind of game so we need people who can unlock defences !

  • 33 Jib // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:11 PM

  • 34 shearer4pm // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:13 PM

Wouldn’t mind hendrick, thought he was superb for Ireland in the euros

  • 35 one fine day // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:16 PM

    JFA @14
    Agree totally
decent player but is passing up the chance to play under a world class coach .Zero loyalty .
And we wonder why these members of England’s over pampered ” elite” get turned over by teams like Iceland ?
And why a Leicester eased up the premier as a proper team over teams full of superstars more interested on there Twitter accounts and other selfish agendas ?
I too hope we see him at st James again ,hopefully either back stagnating on the bench as per his Spurs days or even better playing left back

  • 36 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:29 PM

Novo, i can understand his wanting to play at the top level, but seriously? Palace? Not really top level and could easily get relegated. No, my point was about the bollox they come out with and kissing the badge one minute and asking to leave the next. Loyalty – or the lack of it.

  • 37 Jail for Ashley // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:36 PM

I feel let down by him as it just doesn’t seem to matter what bollox they come out with. It will be very interesting to hear is reasons on joining Palace. If I could be arsed I’d like to do a one of those what he says against what he means. It can’t be for the money or trophies he has left,

  • 38 Jail for Ashley // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:38 PM

Actually I hope Palace get relegated and we get Palace at home in the fifth round of the FA cup!

  • 39 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:39 PM

I think the reasons are London and not getting picked for the Euros ! New England manager probably wont pick championship players !

  • 40 jimmysmith // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:40 PM

A footballers career is short. Newcastle are three seasons minimum from reestablishing themselves as an epl club. Loyalty is a word bandied about by fans, but the club is to blame, mismanagement took us down, and Townsend did more than anyone to try and save us.

  • 41 Novocastrian66 // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:44 PM

Bobby; I know what you mean mate, I was trying to point out that I don’t think he was influenced by money. I think he would have been better served by waiting for a bigger club than Palace. I’m sure another club would have come in for him. I also agree he should have stayed here but the lure of the Premier League is too great for him.

  • 42 jimmysmith // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:46 PM

Money will have influenced his decision for sure, but that’s not to say we didn’t match it. EPL, London, International prospects and money.

  • 43 martoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:47 PM

I must say I am really disappointed with Townsend, I thought he would stick around for 1 season to help us get out of the Championship after we revived his career. I could understand if it was a top 6 club or even West Ham but Palace?
I think Tuff called it right – his Z list girlfriend from Big Brother probably wanted to move back to London!

  • 44 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:50 PM

Excuse me, but is the right place for toonbrothers’ party? I have brought some cans of LCL, a few babychams and a bag of toffee popcorn.

  • 45 martoon // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:52 PM

Tsunki – Yes we’ll miss his rants about Coloshitty – NOT 🙂

  • 46 Jail for Ashley // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:54 PM

You’d think he’d read in to the Nolan, Barton scenario, I don’t give a shite if Wijnaldum, Sissoko or Jaanmat leaves as they’ve never given any indication that they want to be here in the first place, a few soundbites from Wijnaldum about the stadium before disappearing. But Townsend has give it loads about the fans, Rafa, the future, can’t wait to be in the Gallowagate singing section when we see him next!

  • 47 Nufc-83 // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:54 PM

Follow follow you must be on drugs calling Townsend an impact sub he was quality for us and quality when playing regularly in a poor QPR side. If anything he performs badly as a sub which is why he didn’t do much at Tottenham because he was in and out the side.

Also people saying palace are rubbish and will be battling regelation have they not just been taken over or had a massive cash injection? (I suppose with the clown pardew in charge it won’t matter).

  • 48 Tsunki // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:56 PM

Townsend is just another indicator of what’s wrong with the English game. It sits atop the richest leagues in the world and players aspire to be recognised by the national team selector not so much for the honour of wearing the white shirt with 3 lions on, but for the lucrative image rights and brand marketing national recognition brings, that will provide fuel for their career, not in football, but in merchandising.

  • 49 j.tudor // Jun 30, 2016 at 9:57 PM

I doubt you’ll see any loyalty even from homegrown lads .There will always be the lure of the bright lights.

  • 50 jimmysmith // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:03 PM

Townsend has made a tough decision for personal and professional reasons, that’s life. One went our way with Rafa, but you wouldn’t have blamed him had he moved on. Townsend is little different, he simply didn’t handle it as well. He should have kept similarly schtum. I’m sure he regrets that now.

  • 51 Bobbybee // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:04 PM

Or clubs cash in on them. It’s a dirty game really. Need to shut up, I’m putting myself off the game i love!! 😉

  • 52 brklyngeordie // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:06 PM

not crying over Townsend yea he gave it his all for us and i did appreciate that but not exactly the best winger we had in recent years and also makes you appreciate a man like Guti when he was here…

That said will motivate Aaronns even more to try and make that spot his hopefully can fill his shoes and some and then extend before January and commit to the Rafalution those who dont want to be part of it well i dont ant no part of them..

Ritchie is a class signing and feel Gayle may surprise those who didnt see the point..

Incoming players so far obvously suggest the end of Krul,Townsend, and Gini with Colo and Taylor gone and hopefully Moussa will leave us still with work to do not that any of those last 3 are big shoes to fill

  • 53 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:15 PM

Despite the Welsh players pi…ng themselves and giving it large when we were getting humiliated by Iceland, I will remain patriotic to the home nations team and support them to beat the Belgians tomorrow .

It shows how clannish and two faced they are though .

  • 54 cyprus // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Off subject. Ronaldo is a super player but I doubt his Portuguese team mates really like him. He must’ve ran the least, pulls faces when his team mates don’t do exactly what he wants.

Best player ever, yes. But he isn’t putting in the effort.

  • 55 cyprus // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:18 PM

Prediction for final. Repeat of the very first game. Italy Belgium. Italy pulls off a double.

  • 56 Munster Mag // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:23 PM

Lets be frank here lads. A few weeks ago we all scoffed at the idea of Townsend going to Palace, what with being “pardewed” and them having wingers. Well sadly we were wrong . Pardew has obviously done a fine job selling a vision to Townsend. I don’t blame the guy. He nearly got to the Euros ( should have) and now wants to kick on, and he Championship is not the place for that. Ok Palace are toss, but its London for him and they will have some searing pace in their team now. We’ve lost our best player and replaced him with a guy who couldn’t get into the Bournemouth side at the end of the season. Ritchie may be good, but he’s not at Townsends level. Not a good day for Rafa or us. That said, I think Gayle and Ritchie will both be effective, but we were all hoping Townsend would be loyal to Rafa and he hasn’t been at all.

  • 57 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:26 PM

As Palace appear to be the only club in for Townsend and both they and clearly him, wouldn’t entertain the idea of taking him on loan, then he’s best away.

I hope he doesn’t expect a warm reception next time he appears at SJP. He’s walked; he’s burned his bridges and I hope gains the success he’s hoping for.

  • 58 Belfast // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:27 PM

They should definitely scrap extra time in this tournament this is woeful

  • 59 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:30 PM

Where will the next signing be played? Left back maybe?

  • 60 NUFCPaul // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:31 PM

Come on Portugal. Late winner. Massive pet lip on from Ronaldo. That would absolutely make my day. Failing that, let’s see him miss a penalty and it be the one that knocks them out.

  • 61 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:42 PM

Of course Pardew’s sold Townsend his vision but as we all know, Pardew could sell ice to eskimos. But only once when they realised they’ve been conned.

Pardew can talk the talk but…..

  • 62 Belfast // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:51 PM

Piss take that Portugal are still there. They’re bloody rubbish.

  • 63 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:54 PM Somewhere in Wales

So the English aren’t clannish and two faced ? You surely heard old sour puss’s comments after he resigned 🙂
And WTF has the referendum been about ?

  • 65 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 10:59 PM

You really don’t like us Welsh do you, like i frigging care what you think or say.

  • 66 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:00 PM

i take it that you will be supporting Wales tomorrow.

    Ha ha ha

  • 67 Yo-yo // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:00 PM

Did you hear the TV discussion earlier about what was wrong with English football ? Giggsy really laid into the star culture. They were pretty much unanimous that wanting success and wanting to be a star were totally different ambitions.

  • 68 lesh // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:02 PM

    The media?

The Daily Mail, which until tonight has lauded Johnson, has now declared Theresa May as the country’s saviour.

Just says everything about the media!

  • 69 Munster Mag // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:04 PM

Betty, so what if the Welsh laughed at the English. So did the Irish. The English players are a bunch of knobs. Great article in the Independent ( the English one) the other day about how up their arses the English players are compared to other nations. Bollocks to ye and the knacker fans in your midst getting kids in the street to drink alcohol and goading the cops with your stupid arms out gesture. Even your hooligans aren’t top boys, like they used to think they were. I mean, whats to like about a tosser like that Liverpool striker with his stupid dance? Howay the lads, that’s what I care about in English football. And the prem stars can go and get stuffed. Sadly though, the clubs there have moved miles ahead of us in development and financial terms

  • 70 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:04 PM

Yo yo……. The Home Nations fans have all supported each others teams that’s why it was strange to see the Welsh players cheering fanatically when England were getting beat by Iceland. I haven’t seen any other examples of disloyalty.

  • 71 Munster Mag // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:06 PM

Welsh, John Hartson was on the radio this evening here in Ireland. Verrrrry confident that you will beat Belgium. He came across as a bit of a windbag mind. Would be amazing for welsh football if you keep this up. See u in the WC quals. Pints in Dublin!

  • 72 Munster Mag // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Betty, Home nations? You wont even have a Britain soon. If the home nation rule applied, surely English club teams fans would support each other in Europe. It doesn’t happen. So what? Man U wont cheer Liverpool and they are both English. Wales wont cheer England. Its the way it is. We are a bitter bunch though, us celts :). I’m actually softening towards England. I was worse when I lived there cos it was wall to wall “England expects” . Yawn.

  • 73 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Munster…… The point I was making is that it was nice to see the home nations loyally supporting each other until the Welsh players spoilt it.

  • 74 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:13 PM

John Hartson is a really nice guy and he will stay to have a chat.

  • 75 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:13 PM

Welsh…… Of course I’ll be supporting the Welsh against Belgium. Why wouldn’t I , they’re in the UK as are all of us.

  • 76 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:17 PM

I’m asking because you keep having a dig with your bs sheep jokes.

  • 77 welshgeordie9 // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:20 PM

Anyway hopefully when I wake up tomorrow both Gayle and Ritchie have signed for us, then on to two central defenders.

  • 78 bettyswallocks // Jun 30, 2016 at 11:22 PM
