Newcastle May Now Bid For Prolific Scottish Striker

3:48 pm, Thursday, June 30th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 20 Comments

The Mail is reporting today the release clause in the contract of 29 year-old Fulham striker Ross McCormack for £12M is due to expire tomorrow.

But the news several weeks ago was that release clause was for £15M and not £12M – so there’s a little confusion there.

Ross McCormack – Fulham striker available

The report is that clubs like Newcastle United and Aston Villa may now go after the Scottish International and attempt  to get a deal done with Fulham.

The  prolific striker was at Leeds United for four years before signing on at Fulham two years ago..

The £12M or even £15M fee seemed a lot to pay for a player who turns 30 in August, even though he has scored 42 goals in 100 appearances for Fulham over the last two seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Norwich are other clubs interested in signing the striker.

While at Leeds United Ross scored 58 goals in 154 total appearances,  so he’s scored a lot of goals in the Championship.

Newcastle are expected to announce the signing of Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle today, so whether Rafa Benitez thinks he needs another striker is a good question.

But scoring goals was a big problem for us in the Premier League last season and that combined with our defense are the two big areas that Rafa needs to fix this summer.

We’d love to see Newcastle go after the Scottish International and then we could have McCormack and Aleksandar Mitrovic as two excellent central strikers.

Note that Dwight Gayle with his speed can also play out on the wing.

At the very least it’s an interesting development with Ross McCormack.

Comments welcome.

I think Townsend getting back in the England reckoning at the end of the season was probably a bad thing now lol

That probably ended our chances of keeping him.

Mr T he’s already nailed Wile E Coyote I doubt if his body could take any more of it

Townsend cameo for us was designed to reignite his career, and if it has, he’s been a very clever boy.

I would love for us to go for this guy dor under than £10m. That would be our strikers sorted after we ship out Cisse. Then a couple of wingers to have as backup and replace Obertan and a couple of beasty CBs in Dunk and Caulker and we’re ready for the season I think.

  • 11 Belfast // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:13 PM

Yep, he came, he saw, he left.

  • 12 Veltmann // Jun 30, 2016 at 4:16 PM

So how come people think we are doing good business? It was Palace who are doing smart moves.Taking Townsend from us and giving us one of their flops.Consider it as us being fooled.
They Made their future and Premier League status healthier, while we are moving step back.
Well done to Palace and Pardew.
Gayle is some kind of swap deal, where as,Ritchie is Townsend replacement.Laughing stock springs to mind.

Well you can’t really complain about selling Townsend when we don’t have any power to stop it. He has a release clause unfortunately.

So where the hell is Matt Ritchie is he in Newcastle now or not and why is the Gayle transfer taking so Long.

    veltmann

you sound like a makem, i,d wait till townsend actually goes before you say anything, the lad has just bought a house in newcastle so if he had any intentions of going then why would he do that ?
if the media was right then we would of had a team worthy of beating barcelona over last few seasons with all the rubbish speculation, also it would be ritchie that would be replacing townsend not gayle and i would,nt say thats a back step, the guys a grafter like townsend, tracks back, loves going forward, with more assists than townsend last season , townsend only really had a screamer of a game when the pressure was off and we were relegated so you can,t really judge on that, even gini looked good then

    Mr Tuff doesn’t “do” irony.
Surprised at you though Tsunki !

McCormack is also very versatile. He can play deeper or out wide. I’d see him as an insurance policy in case Mitrovic falters.

  • 20 JAMSHA // Jun 30, 2016 at 7:03 PM
