Rafa Benitez Really Rates Striker Dwight Gayle

Assuming he passes his medical, Newcastle should announce the signing of 25 year-old Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle for around £10M today and he will be the second signing in two days for Rafa Benitez.

News today that Matt Richie is on his way to Newcastle this morning after Rafa made his first signing of the summer yesterday when Newcastle signed Gent goalkeeper Matz Sels.

Rafa Benitez has been the driving force behind all three acquisitions.

Dwight Gayle – next through the door at Newcastle

News today in the Northern Echo that Benitez identified Dwight Gayle very early in the summer as a target and the lad has speed and movement.

He has scored 24 goals in 71 appearances for Palace over the last four years and that’s even though he has been used sparingly by former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew,  since he’s been at the London club for the last eighteen months.

When Dwight was at Peterborough from November of 2012 for the rest of that season he scored 13 goals in 29 appearances for them in the Championship, before he joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2013 for £4.5M.

Before he left Dagenham & Redbridge for Peterborough in November of 2012 – initially on loan – he had scored 7 goals in 20 appearances for them.

So in season 2012-2013 he scored 20 goals in 49 total appearances for Peterborough and Degenham.

Dwight has shown he can score goals in the Premier League and in the Championship, so in that way he’s just the type of payer Rafa said he wanted to sign this summer.

He has speed and natural goalscoring ability and Rafa will make him into a better player on Tyneside.

The striker is understood to have already agreed  personal terms and the signing is expected to be announced shortly.

Dwight was reported yesterday to be keen to join Newcastle after talking with Rafa Benitez.

We never rated Dwight much – but if Rafa rates him – we’ll just have to think again.

Obviously we hope he does great on Tyneside.

Comments welcome.

We really need a solid defensive midfielder.

    Don’t worry Blofal

I think we may be getting Ozan Tufan from Fenerbahce in exchange for Siem de Jong plus cash !

He does pop up with goals on a fairly regular occasions, and I was a bit worried about that when he came on against us which is a decent sign.

Pinocchio has been playing him on the wing when he’s eventually played him hasn’t he? Aka second full-back.

I rate Gayle. Palace played him wide mostly and as sub. All 3 of his former clubs create very few chances yet hes still a reasonable goal return.
If pardew doesn’t want him he’s probably world class

Palace fans on twitter all seem to think Gayle is decent and hasn’t had a fair crack under Pardew. Seems a popular player with them all wishing him luck and they seen alot more of him than us

benny has/will have goals and creativity from all sides.
if he plays ritchie and townsend onthe wings as both can play either wing with rola as cover and shelvey in cm with another.
up front he has a lot of different options now wiht nitro a powerfull no9 with little speed / gayle a fast no9 pushing the back 4 and perez/arma deeper playing no10s looking to run in and support.

Would like see us make a double move on Leeds for Charlie Taylor and Lewis Cook, both young with potential but also have played plenty of games in the championship.

Abeid returning would also be a good option.

Will be interesting to see which centre back Rafa is after.

Different manager’s prefer different types of striker, Pardew prefers a target man as does Allardyce, Rafa however prefers a quicker/more mobile type of striker, so not performing for a Pardew side isn’t a surprise, I’m sure Gayle will do well for us, don’t forget that the side will be engineered to allow Gayle to get his goals as I see him being the number one striker ahead of Mitrovic bearing in mind that Mitrovic is a target man so naturally Gayle will be preferred, I do fear for Mitrovic as I can see him getting frozen out.

Firstly, I cannot see Gary Monk getting rid of 2 of his best players when taking on the Leeds job. Likewise with Pearson st Derby re Hughes Kendrick rtc

Abeid will not be coming back. It was a mistake to sell him in the first place.

Finally, Csulker and Hanley are targets for centre half

expatmag @15 – You’re spot on – it is difficult enough to attract top players while in the Championship and our promotion rivals are certainly not going to sell us their best players – some of you need to get real!

Gayle needs to improve his one in three strike rate and hopefully under Rafas guidance and good players around him he will.
I’m considered a footy know nowt by the fountain of knowledge Jib,yet we have posters on here complaining that we’re not buying top internationals and others saying we don’t need to buy anyone. The same posters that called me a “neggar” for speaking out as Ashley tried his best to relegate us are now moaning as we’re starting to look like a club again.
