Benitez In For Spanish International Defender

9:56 pm, Saturday, July 2nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 53 Comments

Newcastle have been linked with 33-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa all summer and there’s news tonight that we are in for the right back but AC Milan are also interested in him.

Arbeloa’s contract ran out at Real Madrid on Thursday and he is currently without a club and a free agent.

Alvaro Arbeloa

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa

A report in Football Espana says that Benitez is keen on bringing him to St. James’s Park as the local news today is that Rafa wants to bring in two full backs and a center-back over the next week.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez signed 33 year-old Arbeloa for Liverpool back in 2007 and Alvaro stayed for two years before rejoining his former club Real Madrid in 2009.

Rafa coached him again at Real Madrid for the first half of last season.

Arbeloa can play in either full-back position so he is versatile as well as having played at the highest levels during his career.

As well as AC Milan there is an unnamed Premier League side interested in signing the 33 year-old, but they are not named.

Arbeloa played 238 times in total for Real Madrid and 98 times for Liverpool and he’s also a hugely experienced player in Europe.

And of course Rafa Benitez wants to get Newcastle back into Europe just as soon as he can.

Arbeloa would be a great signing for us and he would add both experience and leadership to the Newcastle side.

Comments welcome.

    Isn’t he a bit old?

  • 2 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:01 PM

Jib – todays tip – look listen and learn.

  • 3 jimmysmith // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:03 PM

…..and a bit too good. By the time he’d squandered the last decent year of his career, we’d in an ideal world have just come back up. Can’t see it, much as I’d love to.

  • 4 Jail for Ashley // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:06 PM

Not for a year and if Rafa rates him. Colocini would have been perfect if it wasn’t for his total lack of respect for the club that has made him a multi millionaire.

  • 5 Rafa Revolution // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:08 PM

Fair point and we need cover in all defensive positions. Colo needs to be gone, his heart isn’t in it and he’s been poor

  • 6 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:12 PM

Jib Jibberish – your link is an American Home Decor site – I’m sure they are not the best to clarify what is a game bird in the UK.
Like I said Game Act 1831.

If you still have doubts I can provide links to numerous shooting/conservation sites.
    Accept you are wrong (again).
    Stop wriggling.

  • 7 SA Toon // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:16 PM

Don’t worry about his age, he’s world class and would bring incredible experience to the team. Just not sure the Rafa factor would be strong enough to bring him to SJP at the moment.

  • 8 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:17 PM

Jib Jibberish – whilst you are probably scrabbling around Google re game birds – in the meantime I’ll leave my card.

  • 9 Jib // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:20 PM

Tuffty you should really learn how to read a full Act of Parliament – it really is interesting.

Probably too many big words for you like !

Protection of Birds Act 1954 as an amendment to the Game Act 1831
Exceptions to s.1 with respect to certain wild birds.
    (c)in the case of wild duck and wild geese in or over any area below high water mark of ordinary spring tides, the period in any year commencing with the twenty-first day of February and ending with the thirty-first day of August;

  • 10 davetoon // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:20 PM

He’s probably off for a final payday in China

  • 11 davetoon // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:22 PM

Looks like penalties again. Not even sure why they bother playing extra time.

  • 12 Jib // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:24 PM

    Jib // May 26, 2016 at 2:22 PM

Alvaro Arbeloa isn’t training with the Real Madrid squad in Milan.
With Rafa in charge I’m starting to get the most ridiculous fantasies.

  • 13 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:25 PM

Jib Jibberish – oh dear you are such a clot – the Protection of Birds Act has got nothing to do with the definition of game birds.
A little knowledge is very dangerous.

Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa have both made a bid for Newcastle’s Yoan Gouffran for £2.5m #swfc #avfc #nufc…

Words of wisdom are wasted on deaf ears

  • 18 Munster Mag // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:38 PM

Jail i’m not banging a rafa snare drum. He’s doing well but we have lost our top attacking threat to pardew ( who said that would happen – credit to pardew for his sales ability) and we will also lose our other top 3 players. Ritchie is a downgrade on townsend. The other two are progressive but gayle doesnt have a great scoring history. We need more players, the useless beardo and co are still here. The facilities have improved. We have added medical staff before without change so reserve judgement there. So pluses and minuses IMO. Have a good feeling for gayle to be fair. Whither arma bobby?

  • 19 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:38 PM

Game Birds from the Crown Prosecution Service site.
    Game Birds
    Grouse (muirfowl) and Ptarmigan
Black game (black grouse or Heathfowl)

  • 20 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:42 PM

Lesh – I’m afraid you are right. Anybody involved in shooting or generally knowledgeable about wildlife knows what game birds are.

Jibs’ hands over the ears, screaming “nanananaa – I cannot hear you” – really does not contribute to an honest exchange of information.

  • 21 jane // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:44 PM

    rubbish pens!

  • 22 jane // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:48 PM

    better now!

  • 23 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 10:55 PM

    Jib is playing substitute Jane.
He’ll be rubbing some anti inflamatory cream on his flabby buttocks to lessen the effect of the damn good thrashing he’s just received from my jacksie thwacking cane.
Jib I’ll leave my card again :-

  • 24 jane // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:04 PM

    sorry you’re discussing geese yes?

  • 25 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:05 PM

indeed yes – geese yes you know wildfowl – not game birds.

  • 26 jane // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:08 PM

    does this help..

    Goosey goosey gander,
    Whither shall I wander?
    Upstairs and downstairs
    And in my lady’s chamber.
There I met an old man
    Who wouldn’t say his prayers,
So I took him by his left leg
And threw him down the stairs.

  • 27 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:08 PM

    jib/jane – better explain.
wildfowl – is not a footballing term meaning a wild/outrageous and unlawful tackle but a group of birds of differing species.

  • 28 Mister Tuff // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:10 PM

Hahahaha – Jibs being doing some Google searches about geese and the only thing he can come up with is goosey goosey gander.
    What a plonka!

  • 29 Jib // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:18 PM

Arbeloa would be brilliant but I think it impossible for even Rafa to talk him into playing in the Championship after Real Madrid.
Fat Sam managed it with Ivan Campo but it’s a different world now.

  • 30 jimmysmith // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:19 PM

Imagine standing over a spot kick for a place in the euro semis facing either one of Manuel Neuer, or even worse, Gianluigi Buffon. I watched it in bed, and was weak at the knees. I’m still a bit wobbly.

  • 31 Jib // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:20 PM

    Good evening Jane
I see the village idiot has us as the same person again .

  • 32 jimmysmith // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:21 PM

If he has coaching or managerial aspirations, it might just be on the cards.

  • 33 geordie157 // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:24 PM

Wonder if we are looking at many free transfers….distin is old but a leader and could do a job for a season. At the other end of the scale there is Nick Powell who man utd released, struggled to live up to the hype but still only 21 I think

  • 34 Jib // Jul 2, 2016 at 11:42 PM

Arbeloa and Rafa do have the same agent .

  • 35 BandB // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:03 AM

There are no females in Jib’s world.
    It’s all gender neutral.
    Male, female, gay, welsh.
All we need is a great big melting pot.
    They are avatars.
Barely sentient life forms kept alive by a keyboard.

BandB…..In his defence.. He has some game birds in his world.

  • 37 BandB // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:08 AM

And the odd shitehawk for company, betty.

  • 38 Jib // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:10 AM

Tuff and BandB a union made in heaven.
One thinks he’s clever and is thick as a bulls lug.
The other knows she’s clever and has wasted it.

My rope a dope days with you Jib are long gone 🙂

  • 40 manxpie // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:16 AM

munster i wouldn’t say ritchie is much of a downgrade on townsend and certainly not in the championship
last time he was there he scored 15 with 18 assists
townsend was nowhere near that with his loans there
its a great buy imo, a few more signings like that in defence and we’ll be in a great position

  • 41 bettyswallocks // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:17 AM

Just looked up shitehawk in the urban dictionary.:- A useless going nowhere idiot who talks crap. A tad harsh but the the hawk reference keeps it on theme so I’ll take

  • 43 nufc 11 // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:40 AM

A hardened pro from the championship is what we need Richard keogh or Grant Hanley.

I’m off to catch up on my misogyny. How many misogynists does it take to change a lightbulb? None , let her do the dishes in the dark.

  • 45 manxpie // Jul 3, 2016 at 12:45 AM

its great we are actually getting players that have earn”t there careers in the lower leagues and also experienced the prem as they know the championship and will be hungry to get back
surprised so far by wat we have spent tho 25 mill and we still need at least 3 more and thats without anymore going

  • 46 Rafa Revolution // Jul 3, 2016 at 1:00 AM

I still think we need a leader though aside from Lascelles I can’t see another player who will captain us

  • 47 Bobbybee // Jul 3, 2016 at 1:03 AM

Now den Munster, you old hooligang. 😉 As far as Arma goes, I trust Rafa to make his own mind up on the kids ability, because it’s his decision that matters. Bearing in mind how long I’ve followed Arma’s progress closely, I believe he’s still the most natural striker on our books and consequently believe Rafa will give him his chance. That’s my opinion and Rafa ain’t no mug, i expect he’ll see the quality and make him even better. He’s blown the league beneath away already, in a pretty poor Coventry team, so there’s no point sending him there again. If he gets a full pre season in, I expect him to play a big part in our promotion. No point speculating yet really, but imo he’s already better than what we’ve got up front finishing wise, so I’ll leave the decisions up the Rafa. I’m confident this kid is destined for greatness and Rafa can push him in the right direction. 😉

“As well as AC Milan there is an unnamed Premier League side interested in signing the 33 year-old, but they are not named.”

So you’re saying we don’t know the name?

  • 49 Nufc-83 // Jul 3, 2016 at 7:59 AM

Jail you said something along the lines of winning 2-0 Perez is tired gouffran is good to come on as he works hard! Why not bring somebody on who works hard bit actually has a little bit if quality and something in his locker!!! Gouffran does not have one good attribute and will look shocking in the championship while the likes of Sammy ameobi will at least show flashes of being a player.

The fact you said how many on here said Simpson was terrible to use in an argument shows you know f all about football.

  • 50 Nufc-83 // Jul 3, 2016 at 8:12 AM

If Jaanmatt is staying then priority position is a left back. I doubt Jaanmatt will so we need both. I think de Jong really needs to be given that attacking centre role if we can keep him fit he will be a class player for is. Also want to see Aarons on the left he will rip the championship up (again if we can keep him of medical table). Also like to see Armstrong given more game time and non of this padew tactic about bringing him on for the wing played up top.

  • 51 Jib // Jul 3, 2016 at 8:14 AM

The San Lorenzo squad for next season with the comment that they are just waiting for FC to return from England.

  • 52 Jib // Jul 3, 2016 at 8:16 AM

Loads of pics of the players on their first couple of days. They all look lean and mean – even Shelvey !,,10278~5696544,00.html

  • 53 giimps // Jul 3, 2016 at 8:31 AM

IMHO, janmaat will leave and we will need a right back unless mbabu or Anita I settled for there, Dummet and Haidara are good enough if we can keep them both fit.
Haidara is the more forward thinking but relies on cover when he attacks, Dummet has been more defensive and has already shown Rafa he can do the job in the premier , in the 6 game unbeaten run at the end of the season when he was back from injury.
If we are playing with wingers, I would go
    Mbabu ,lascelles,mbemba Dummet
    Ritchie Tiote shelvey Aaron’s
Assuming gini, moussa and janmaat do leave
