Newcastle Favorites To Sign England International Center-Back

12:29 pm, Saturday, July 2nd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

The Daily Record is reporting that Newcastle United appear to be in the lead to land center-back Steven Caulker, but it’s not clear whether QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is willing to sell the once capped England International outright this summer.

QPR are reported ready to let the England international leave the club “in some capacity” this summer, as they want to bring down their running costs after failing to get promoted back to the Premier League last season.

New Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is also interested in taking the lad to Glasgow, but the famous Scottish club would not be able to cover Steven’s wages of £30K/week.

The report indicates Newcastle are willing to do that, so maybe QPR are only willing to loan Caulker out for next season?

Brendan had the defender on loan when he was at Swansea City and Steven had a great season in south Wales back in 2011-2012, when he played 26 times for the Swans.

Steven’s once promising career has been in decline over the last year or two and he is said to be keen to join Rafa and Newcastle to get things back on track.

So here seems another player who is anxious to join the Rafalution going on at Newcastle and Rafa Benitez is said to be an admirer of the defender who has put in some top class performances earlier in his career.

We expect Rafa to try to get a permanent deal set up to bring Steven to Tyneside early next week – and if QPR are only willing to do a loan deal then take him on loan with an option to buy.

We don’t think Rafa would be too willing to take Steven on a loan with no option to buy because then when he makes him into a better player, QPR could take him back and say – thanks Rafa!

We saw last season with many players over a short 10 game spell – including Andros Townsend – that the former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager can very quickly get the best out of players.

This report in the Record is consistent with the Chronicle reporting today that Rafa is in negotiations for a center-back who has played in both the Championship and the Premier League.

Apparently Newcastle are after three defenders and Rafa is hoping to sign a center-back and a pair of full-backs before the squad leaves for their training and fitness camp in County Kildare, Ireland next Saturday.

Caulker has played in both of England’s top two divisions and so had Blackburn Rovers center-back Glenn Hanley who Newcastle have also been linked with this summer.

Comments welcome.

I’m of the same school of thought as jail on this one, gouffran isn’t good, he’s not a starter by any means but he’s a energetic player to have waiting on the bench at the end of games who can come on and use that energy to pull the opposition defense around a little and sap their energy levels. He will help see out games in my opinion. Should never see the starting 11 though.
Also bear in mind we are in a lower league too, he may have more joy down here.

Can’t see this one myself. He’s went majorily down hill from he first came on the scene.

Dangerous ground having the same thoughts as yer man ppb.

Would rather have Hanley to be honest.

  • 5 Belfast // Jul 2, 2016 at 12:39 PM

Would actually rather we signed a good left back and played Dummett centre back.

I’m sure we are chasing defenders but knowing Rafa it will be someone left field that has never been mentioned like Dominic Iorfa from Wolves.

I was very impressed with Mbemba – Lascelles combination. I wouldnt want to break it.

    Pardew priceless

Got to disagree there mate. The sooner the likes of Gouffran Riviere cisse coloccini are out of this club the better. Gouffran is just a nothing player now and I feel for him partly because his ability has been torn to shreds by McCardew. He doesn’t have any pace, energy, decent shot, cross I remember him struggling to make a 5 yard pass. I don’t think he really cares and I think he’ll want to look for a move, back to France probably for the best. Sorry but even at this level, I don’t think he’ll cut it and he hasn’t got the stomach for it. Give some of our younger English players a chance

Being played all over midfield when he used to be a dangerous striker his career has just been on the decline ever since he arrived

  • 11 expatmag // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:09 PM

    Yes it is.

Unfortunately, Sissoko Wijnaldum and probably Tiote will be on their bikes along with Janmaat Krul and Thauvin by the time September 1 comes round

Nightmare for the commentators, Lascelles and Caulker are like doppelganger’s

will die for the toon army
You are right it is a good pairing but we would have to be very lucky for them both to remain uninjured for the 60+ games of next season.

  • 14 Belfast // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:18 PM

Expat I can’t wait till they all leave. Probably the only plus point of relegation getting rid of the ones who don’t give a shite.

Replace them all with delighted to be here players Ritchie, Gayle etc and well be far better off.

  • 15 Belfast // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:19 PM

Just hope most of them have moved on before the season kicks off.

You’ve just mentioned him though so that rules him out.

  • 17 welshgeordie9 // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:28 PM

I’m sure I saw report yesterday that we are close to signing a defender and we could get him by this Monday coming.

  • 18 expatmag // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:28 PM

and a few more can go too over the next couple of windows

I dont think there will be to many changes. Rafa knows that if he sells many good players he will have buy new ones next season. he already has them why sell.

Charnely said they made a mistake for Townsend deal (who was well replaced by Matt Ritche) so for the rest of the players i think it will be hard for them to be sold. Rafa knows he has a team that went 7 games unbeaten. Playing Man City, Liverpool and Spurs in those games. We already have a good team we jst need some new faces for back up mainly.

  • 20 expatmag // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:30 PM

The defender is Caulker. He nanager wants to keep him but he is being ivrr ruled by his board apparently.

Celtic are in for him too. QPR want his wages of their books

  • 21 welshgeordie9 // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:32 PM

Depends if and when someone goes think that’s it for midfield and up front, think Benitez will now just concentrate on the defence, I’m sure he wants to do all the transfer business before pre season matches start.

  • 22 expatmag // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:32 PM

Experience shows that there is no point in keeping unhappy players and if we want to go straight back up, we need comitted players and not sulkers.

  • 23 welshgeordie9 // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:33 PM

Do think he will join us or go to Celtic.

  • 24 expatmag // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:35 PM

Dont know. He may be enticed hy the size of our club but he may also be enticed by champions league football at Celtic too

  • 25 welshgeordie9 // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:43 PM

I forgot about champions league, although they hardly going to win it.

  • 26 welshgeordie9 // Jul 2, 2016 at 1:44 PM

But then again look at Benitez, he’s dropped down a league so anything could happen.

Don’t know if he would be my choice he has had chance after chance and never got where he needed to be. Rather a Hanley or Richard keogh as back up to mbeama and lascelles
