Three Defenders On Benitez Radar – Center-Back Signing Close

Rafa Benitez, after bringing three good players into the club over the last three days, will now concentrate on an area of the team that has been weak at Newcastle for a good four years, and in that time we have conceded a massive 255 goals in the Premier League.

Those stats alone say we should have strengthened the defense long ago, but now we have Rafa Benitez on board, watch for him start bringing in some good defenders next week.

Steven Caulker – is this the player Rafa close to signing?

The Chronicle is reporting that Rafa is already working on a deal to bring a center-back to Newcastle and that player has both Championship and Premier League experience.

We have been linked with Steven Caulker of QPR and Grant Hanley of Blackburn Rovers, who both have played in England’s top two divisions and either one would be another solid signing by the manager.

If we were to hazard a guess we’d say 24 year-old England International Steven Caulker is the player Rafa wants to bring to the club.

Local papers in Buenos Aries are reporting that Newcastle have already released Fabricio Coloccini from his contract at Newcastle after an up and down eight years at the club – the last five years as the captain.

Colo, now 34 will join San Lorenzo, but no official confirmation yet from Newcastle – but maybe today.

So with Steven Taylor already gone, Rafa needs a couple of good center-backs brought in this summer.

The former Liverpool manager is building a younger team at Newcastle, but he will not stop at just reinforcing the central defense.

The Chronicle is reporting he wants to also bring in a right back and a left back as soon as he can.

Rafa will want to bring them all in before the squad leave for their training camp in County Kildare where he will conduct an intense fitness camp between next Saturday, July 9th and the following Saturday, July 16th.

The purpose of this as well as getting the players super-fit will be to have the squad gel and build up that team spirit, which will be so important if we are to be really successful next season.

This all sounds very good to us – Rafa knows exactly what he’s doing.

Jail are you joking tell me one attribute that gouffran has over any other conference player? He works hard because he’s totally useless.

Hanley or Dunk would be much better than Caulker. Would love us to try and get Hause from Wolves

Somehow I completely missed the Coloccini news.

Best of luck to him. I know some on here seemed to hate him by the end. But I think he was a decent player in a poor team.

Definitely for the best though. His legs have gone, his enthusiasm seems to have as well. Big wages.

Onwards and upwards, lascelles would be my captain of choice. Caulker would be a great signing.

Delighted by the signing of Ritchie. Gayle I’ve never been impressed with but I’m told by people who have watched him more that he appears to be a good move so hopeful on that too. Can’t comment on the keeper, but seems to have good credentials.

I definitely think these are the players we should be going after. Star names don’t win championships, Mr dependable so do. And we know Ritchie can definitely do a job in the premier league. Can’t believe we have a winger.

Agree with Geordie157, Dunk and Hanley way way about Caulker. Caulker is a poor man’s Stephen Taylor. Although he may improve under Rafa. I would also like to see what Mbabu has to offer as a Center back, that is his natural position.

I like Caulker. He’s a threat in corners and is young, has experience and english.

Right back is the problem position now, even if Janmaat stays who is the back up for him? Anita has been used there, but it isn’t his natural position. For me Mbemba and lascelles, through luck or because of others injuries, formed a decent CB understanding at the end of the season, but I would still like to see more experience come in.

PS in future could you use the English spelling of defence in place of defense.

Personally I would have Lees and Dunk long before i thought about Caulker.
