Benitez After This 25 Year-Old Former Liverpool Center-Back?

4:32 pm, Sunday, July 3rd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 22 Comments

The Sun reported yesterday that Middlesbrough have offered a new contract to their central defender Daniel Ayala to fend off interest from other interested clubs.

Newcastle have just signed three good players last week and Rafa Benitez is targeting three new defenders in the coming week and one of the players he wants in is a center-back.

Since Newcastle were reported interested in Ayala a few weeks ago, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Newcastle have made another enquiry about the player signed by Benitez for Liverpool back in 2007.

Daniel Ayala – Middlesbrough center-back

Middlesbrough will not want to lose a player who was one of their star men last season and he was selected in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for last term.

Newcastle were told Daniel would cost them a massive £15M if they wanted to sign him, but it may not be that much if Ayala is a Rafa Benitez target.

The Newcastle manager last week somehow persuaded midfielder Matt Ritchie to move to Tyneside from Bournemouth, even though the south coast offered him a bumper deal to stay at the south coast club.

Matt said he was very keen to join Rafa at Newcastle because he thought he could improve him as a player and that Newcastle was still a massive club even though we are now in England’s second division.

And therefore it’s not impossible the same thing could happen with Daniel Ayala, especially since he has already worked with Rafa before at Liverpool and he is also Spanish.

Ayala is said to be considering the new offer made by Middlesbrough, but it would be timely for Rafa to move back in and see if he can tie up a deal for the 25 year-old Spanish center-back.

Newcastle do not seem short of money and the club have £7.3M from the sale of Remy Cabella to Marseille (yet to be ratified officially) and £13M for Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace.

Any transfer funds from outgoing sales this summer can be used by Rafa to bring in new players to strengthen the squad.

That’s in  addition to transfer funds made available to him as part of the agreement he reached with the club before sign a three year deal in May.

If Rafa really wants Ayala it could be that he’s trying to make a deal for him this week.

Ayala joined Championship club Middlesbrough from Norwich on an emergency loan deal in October of 2013 and the following January Ayala penned a 3.5 year deal for a fee of around £350K.

His current contract has only one year to run. and he could even become a free agent next summer.

The impressive 6ft 3ins defender has played 96 games for Middlesbrough with 11 goals and 3 assists.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I was rather hoping we could trade Krul for him.

If it was me I would play a 442 with Krul or Sels in goal. Back four of jaanmat Mbemba lascelles and dummet (would like a new lb and rb if jaanmat goes obv). Ritchie coldback shelvey and Aaron’s in midfield with gayle and mitro up top rotated with Armstrong and Perez.

Makes perfect sense, sign him up Rafa.

  • 4 Belfast // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:13 PM

Not worth anywhere near 15 million.

  • 5 Jail for Ashley // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:13 PM

I’d have Tiote in there as captain and I’d have a top youngster in on loan at LB if we don’t sign a permanent one. Not sure how Rafa rates Haidara but he hasn’t looked good at all in the rare times he’s been fit. Dummet needs to get used to being a sub.

Why is everyone under the impression Mbemba is staying? Did he say he was staying or something? Think he’ll be offski myself.

    Belfast,
Unfortunately because of all the money floating about I think that’s what you have to pay to clubs that don’t really want to sell.

They want 15 million but it won’t be that much if Rafa wants him ??

Is he going to hypnotize them or what? 🙂

  • 9 Jail for Ashley // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:18 PM

    Belfast,
Because he’s under contract and can’t go anywhere if we don’t want to sell, same goes for those lazy pair of “top stars” we have on our books.

He’s going to wave his hand and say “that’s not the price you’re looking for”

  • 11 Jail for Ashley // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:20 PM

That’s after his turning water in to wine trick.

    Aye

Look in my eyes, look in my eyes, now let’s lose that one in front of the five please.

    Mister Tuff
    July 3, 2016
Could be a good week ahead.
    Couple of more players signed.
Taffies to get knocked out of Euros.
Misery Guts Andy Murray to get knocked out of Wimbledon.
Tony Bliar (Champagne Socialist) to get done for war crimes.

Taffies get knocked out of Euros, is that right grumpy, you know what, jealousy is a terrible thing.

    Ha ha ha

If we lose Janmaat, I would like to have Chris Gunter from Reading replace him.. he’s had a really good euros with Wales

  • 15 Belfast // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:24 PM

You could probably loan a young centre back from one of the top six that would be equally as good.

  • 16 StevoNorthShields // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:30 PM

They need a keeper… Swap him for krul….. My mate from work raves about the spanish kid for them?

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Jul 3, 2016 at 5:43 PM

    Stevo,
To get in to the team of the year means you’ve got something about you, it might be harder to persuade him than the other two as he’s waited a long time for a return to the PL and probably wants a run playing at your Old Traffords etc.

Jail I agree actually Tiote if he stays is better than coldback.

Belfast I don’t think Mbemba got much praise last season especially as we were considered poor in defence and went down. I think us fans who watched him could see he had bags of ability but it’s definately gone under the radar. If he was to go we would want big money and no side will pay it as I say for someone who has supposedly not impressed all that much. Maybe I’m not giving other clubs scouting network enough credit but that’s my take.

Ha ha.. It amuses me when our supporters say.. He’s not worth that much… It has to depend on the context that you look at it. If Ayala cost’s £20 Million and he clears a ball off the goal line in the last minute of the last game and it means we are promoted , he is worth about £160 Million as that is how much we will get back in the Premiership.. Then the flip side is we ask £15-20 Million for Sissoko..?? . Geez..Get real.. He sure as hell is not worth that… I would let him go for what we paid for him just to make sure he was gone, no point in having players around the place with a face like a slapped arse… Wants to join Arsenal…pmsl… Didn’t realize they were looking for turnstile opperators coz I doubt he would even warm the bench… Lazy tw@ ..

Rafa surely doesn’t want to take a loanee from the Prem. Isn’t he recruiting with a view to developing a team that’ll go towards a squad fit for the Prem?

Shane Duffy at Blackburn at 2million is a snip 26 years old, if not for John stones he would have came through at Everton. 1st choice cb for Ireland an played the euros aswel.
