Benitez After This 25 Year-Old Former Liverpool Center-Back?

The Sun reported yesterday that Middlesbrough have offered a new contract to their central defender Daniel Ayala to fend off interest from other interested clubs.

Newcastle have just signed three good players last week and Rafa Benitez is targeting three new defenders in the coming week and one of the players he wants in is a center-back.

Since Newcastle were reported interested in Ayala a few weeks ago, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Newcastle have made another enquiry about the player signed by Benitez for Liverpool back in 2007.

Middlesbrough will not want to lose a player who was one of their star men last season and he was selected in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for last term.

Newcastle were told Daniel would cost them a massive £15M if they wanted to sign him, but it may not be that much if Ayala is a Rafa Benitez target.

The Newcastle manager last week somehow persuaded midfielder Matt Ritchie to move to Tyneside from Bournemouth, even though the south coast offered him a bumper deal to stay at the south coast club.

Matt said he was very keen to join Rafa at Newcastle because he thought he could improve him as a player and that Newcastle was still a massive club even though we are now in England’s second division.

And therefore it’s not impossible the same thing could happen with Daniel Ayala, especially since he has already worked with Rafa before at Liverpool and he is also Spanish.

Ayala is said to be considering the new offer made by Middlesbrough, but it would be timely for Rafa to move back in and see if he can tie up a deal for the 25 year-old Spanish center-back.

Newcastle do not seem short of money and the club have £7.3M from the sale of Remy Cabella to Marseille (yet to be ratified officially) and £13M for Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace.

Any transfer funds from outgoing sales this summer can be used by Rafa to bring in new players to strengthen the squad.

That’s in  addition to transfer funds made available to him as part of the agreement he reached with the club before sign a three year deal in May.

If Rafa really wants Ayala it could be that he’s trying to make a deal for him this week.

Ayala joined Championship club Middlesbrough from Norwich on an emergency loan deal in October of 2013 and the following January Ayala penned a 3.5 year deal for a fee of around £350K.

His current contract has only one year to run. and he could even become a free agent next summer.

The impressive 6ft 3ins defender has played 96 games for Middlesbrough with 11 goals and 3 assists.
