Somebody’s Buzzing After Signing For Newcastle United

9:07 am, Sunday, July 3rd, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

25 year-old Dwight Gayle was the second signing of the summer for Newcastle on Friday and he immediately took to Twitter to tell everybody he was buzzing about joining a massive club.

It’s massive alright and he’s going to find out soon what it’s like playing for a club with the fantastic support of Newcastle United.

Not only is Newcastle a massive club, but it’s very well run these days by a certain Rafa Benitez – and that’s a nice change.

Lascelles and Mbemba made a very effective central partnership. It would be a difficult decision to breakup that partnership should Rafa bring in an experienced centre back.

But experienced centre back at what level ?

The Championship is going to be rougher and tougher than the Premiership and very much more demanding due to more games. Also we will be the team that all the others will strive to beat.

Therefore bringing in a player from a lower foreign league may not be the answer. We got lucky with Mbemba but it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the rough and tumble of the Championship.

If it was a choice of who should make way I would say Mbemba as Lascelles is now the most experienced defender we have. He has the t-shirt.

Just because I don’t think Gouffran is as shite as you do does not mean I know fcuk all about football. Considering Villa and Sheff Wed have reportedly bid for him, two clubs aiming for promotion where as Sammi Ameobi can’t even make Cardiff’s first eleven would show his value to a squad. As for my sticking up for Danny Simpson in not being as bad as people made out, well his PL winners medal kind of proves that point. My scenario of bringing Gouffran on to close a game out is only irrelevant IF we had someone better to bring on, Gouffran will be replaced in time, unless there is wholesale clear out it won’t be this summer.

    Jiberish is not carl/Ian etc.

  • 4 Nufc-83 // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:17 AM

Let’s see who gouffran signs for before you start using supposed bids to support your argument.

On Simpson any player would have slotted into that Leicester side at rb and done a job it doesn’t mean they are even premier league quality. Leicester showed how great organisation from a manager and team work with a few world class players can do really well although that won’t happen again in our lifetime

I would have no problem with Rafa pushing Chancel forward into the stopper role in a 4-2-3-1.The lad has shown he can pick out a pass.
Even if Tiote stays we’ll get nothing like 60+ games out of him.

Not feeling as cranky as i did last night so happier now about the team. We need more players and that may include a striker if cisse goes. To say nothing about defenders. I think dummett could be a very good centre half but do we have enough quality in there and is caulker an upgrade on lascelles or mbemba? Bobby i think we both said that we should be buying established premiership players as class would rise to the top. I wud have preferred to see beardo and co thrown out with their loser mentality but trust that rafa has a close eye on him. If thauvin stays and does well i will be amazed. Hopefully 3 more players to come as we will have lost loads by the time the season starts htl

Unless we have a better replacement lined up I hope he doesn’t go anywhere. I never once said Simpson was world class just not as bad as people made out. You are honestly suggesting that a team that pretty much just walked the Premiership is made up of players that aren’t PL quality. Mmm let’s think, who here knows fcuk all about football.

Jail i agree re simpson. He got dogs abuse on this site but i always felt he was a proper defender. Only Fifa football fans feel that full backs in a flat back four dont need to be defenders first and foremost. That said, janmaat wud do well for us because of the possession we should have. That said he’s another fraud in the sissoko mould. Although at least sissoko didnt make a speech at an awards night on tyneside and then continue to play rubbish.

  • 9 Munster Mag // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:34 AM

Jib,rafa likes tiote a lot. I hope he stays. We need him fit as he is an enforcer and we need that. Jib mbemba isnt talented enough to play in midfield consistently imo.

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:37 AM

If Sissoko leaves I’d have Tiote as captain.

  • 11 Slank // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:39 AM

    Jib & Munster

Would a formation of 3-5-2 work with Mbemba flanked by Dummitt and Lascelles ? I think Dummitt is a better central defender than a left back.

Our recent lack of goals has been our Achillies heal using Mitro as the single striker. I’m sure we would be more effective with two strikers, possibly Mitro and Gayle but only if our midfield can deliver.

If we packed the midfield it would give the flexibility to support our strikers.

However, I’m not a student of Rafa so don’t know whether he has ever tried that formation before.

Opinion needed guys and hope this isnt a dumb question. Should i bring my 10 year old angel of a daughter to the Bohs game? Im thinking about the pub beforehand…. Id like to meet the geordie masses as its been too long but the wife reckons there will be too much industrial language. I told her (wife) to hadaway an shite and want to bring the kid. Will many Mags travel? Fugit i’m bringing her!

I find it unbelievable that people are still trying to justify their argument by continuing to slag off Danny Simpson. He’s proved that he is quite a decent premiership defender (not world class but decent) buy playing in a premiership winning team. Saying any player could have played their in that team is ridiculous – when they beat Man City they still had to defend against Silva etc.

  • 14 Munster Mag // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:42 AM

Slank i think rafa isnt flexible enough to move off 4231 to be honest.

  • 15 Nufc-83 // Jul 3, 2016 at 9:52 AM

Most premier league managers who shipped out the likes of Simpson would agree with me Ranieri has done an amazing job. Put Dummett in that Leicester side would they have still won the league the answer…. Yes they would. I don’t believe dummett is a good premier league full back for one minute

Gouffrann was a poor to average winger in France. He was however and exceptional striker.

he would be a good addition to a championship team.

Danny Simpson is a great fullback. People that don’t rate him usually don’t see the finer things in football. It was Simpson who organised the back 4, who shouted at Taylor, Williamson and Collo time and time again.

His positioning was spot on and allowed wingers to do their jobs and not have to track back as much. He wasn’t tha fastest around which is why he got caught out the odd time but usually his experience and positioning would get around that.

The same ones that don’t rate Simpson usually don’t rate Tiote either because they just don’t understand the jobs and roles the players they have to do.

They usually dont get that players underperform when played out of position but they do understand what a player does when on the ball and judges them fully on that.

Munster I agree about buying established premiership players but the majority wont want to come.

They say Joe Allen is available for 12 million. That would be a bargain but IMO there is absolutely no chance he would want to come.

    Thats the problem we have.

  • 18 funlovingexpress // Jul 3, 2016 at 10:19 AM

Munster the thing about RAFA’s tactics is that on paper it looks like he plays 4231 and he does kind of, but during the game his teams adopt 433 and 442.

He has already alluded to the fact that Newcastle will have to play a different way in the championship. Whether he means sit back and draw them out or a different starting tactical formation is anyones guess. Pre season should tell us a lot

Slank……you say rougher and tougher? For one, if the championship was tougher than the prem then there’s obv something wrong with the divisions. Prem strikers are far better than champ strikers so I would hazard a guess that the prem would be ‘tougher’. And you say rougher……that’s an old myth in my eyes. Teams in the champ now actually play football, long gone are the days where it’s ‘long ball’ and kick the shi*e out of players. But that’s just my opinion….
