Rafa Benitez Reported After Spanish Full-Back

Newcastle are being linked with 31 year-old Atletico Madrid right-back Jesus Gamez in the Spanish press.

Futbol.as.com are reporting today that Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is interested in signing a player who is now surplus to requirements at the top Spanish club.

Atletico have signed 24 year-old Croatian International right-bank Sime Vrsaljko from Sassuolo.

That makes Gamez likely to lose his place next season in the Madrid side who finished runners-up top Real Madrid in the Champions League and 3rd in La Liga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Benitez wants to sign a center-back and two full backs as soon as possible, to further augment the squad after bringing in three good signings in three days last week.

It’s going to be interesting, if this report is true, to see if Rafa can persuade the Spanish U23 International to join a second division English club after regularly playing in the Champions League over the last few seasons.

Gamez joined Atletico only a couple of years ago from Malaga and has played only 37 times for the Madrid and his contract runs out next summer, so it’s probably a good time to move on.

Here’s what some of the article in in Futbol.as.com is reporting translated form the Spanish:

“Jesus Gamez, after confirmation of the signing of Vrsaljko knows that his future lies away from the Vicente Calderon.”

“And he could end up at Newcastle with Rafa Benitez, who next year will play in the second division of England.”

“For Gamez is just one of the many players may have to move out as currently the staff is oversisized at 36 players.”

“So, with the maximum of 25 players only that can be registered , they must have at least 11 players leave.”

Gamez is versatile and can play on either side and in fact when he first joined he was played at left back by Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

Jesus was at Malaga from 2000 and in his time there the 6ft tall defender played 256 games for them with 21 assists.

We do expect Rafa Benitez to sign a couple of Spanish players this summer – we’ll just have to wait and see if Jesus Gamez is one of them.

Altough most info about him lists him as a right back – Diego Simeone has played him more often as a left back !

Jib @ 68 in a previous post last night about Manku and Mourinho … the tradition of the constant media obsession with Manku does grind with me as well but I suspect Fleet Street’s finest and those broadcast media sycophants believe they’re serving-up their predictable hackwork ‘cos that’s what their audience wants.  I think they’re mistaken – they’ve been getting the balance wrong for decades.

The hacks unhealthy symbiotic relationship with certain clubs (and Manku in particular) is, more often than not, fed by the fascination with the narcissistic megalomaniacs who populate the game, hence the Mourinho cult.  Even this morning The Guardian newspaper devoted 4/5ths of the front of the sports section to Mourinho and 4/5ths of a double page centre spread inside to the fella.  And these are big Berliner format pages, not piddly little tabloid size.  Mind, the guy gives good copy usually and I’d rather read about him than Hippo Arse Heed but even I couldn’t be arsed to read it all.

However, what really galls is the habit of constantly referring to Manku as ‘United’;  there are even nobs on here who do it.  Let’s just hope ‘the hex’ quack Eva put on Mourinho at Chelski carries over to Manku.

Seeing Sissoko play in a different team, it is clear that with good players around him he can play at the very top. Instead of being proud to have him we throw stones and think of ‘weaknesses’ to knock him. e.g. he can’t tackle, he’s a terrible goalie, etc. In a way I understand his desire to leave: play in a top league, no love lost.

Conclusion to all that: since he wants out, let out.

Now, Gini: a flawed genius, capable of the amazing, and the indifferent. Much like HBA, at a lower level. I’d really like to see him stay, hopefully Rafa can bring some consistency in our most talented player.
