The Watford Observer are reporting that no offers have yet been received from Newcastle for the 27 year-old Watford and Northern Ireland center-back Craig Cathcart.
There have been rumors in Watford this week that Newcastle were interested in signing the 6ft 2ins center-back, but they report no bid has been received from any club by Watford.
Craig Cathcart – a Rafa Benitez target?
It turns out that during our last Championship season there were rumors in September, 2009 that we wanted the then 20 year-old Cathcart for a season long loan, while he was still on Manchester United’s books.
There were also reports we wanted to sign him outright, but for whatever reason those deals never materialized and Craig finally left the Red Devils and signed on permanently at Blackpool the following summer.
This is what the Watford Observer are reporting today:
The Watford Observer understands Newcastle United have not made a bid for centre-back Craig Cathcart.
Rafa Benitez’s side were linked with a move for the Northern Ireland international this week with reports claiming a £7m offer had been made.
But the Hornets have not received an offer from the Championship side and it is believed they would have no interest in selling the defender.
The 27-year-old made 40 appearances for Watford last season and his consistency earned him third place in the player of the season award.
Cathcart was part of the Northern Ireland squad in France for the Euros and they did very well to reach the knockout rounds with Craig playing well in all four games.
He was at Blackpool for four years after leaving Manchester United in 2010 and he joined Watford two years ago.
Craig played one season in the Premier League and three seasons in the Championship for Blackpool and then one season in each of the leagues with Watford.
So he has the experience and background Rafa is looking for, with players having Championship experience who have also proved they are good enough for the Premier League.
Newcastle have today been linked with center-back Aden Flint of Bristol City, as Newcastle try to sign a center-back, hopefully before Saturday when the squad leaves for their week-long Ireland Training camp.
