Newcastle Have Touched Down In Ireland

5:20 pm, Saturday, July 9th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 77 Comments

News on the Newcastle web-site that the Newcastle United squad have just arrived in Ireland for their week-long training camp in County Kildare.

Newcastle will play their first friendly of the summer in Dublin next Saturday against Bohemian.

newcastle squad arrive in ireland

Newcastle players arriving in Ireland tonight

Here’s some of what has just been put on the Newcastle web-site:

Manager Rafa Benitez has named a 26-man party for the County Kildare-based camp, which will conclude with a friendly against Bohemian on Saturday, 16th July (2;00pm kick-off).

Summer signings Jesus Gamez, Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Matz Sels are all included in the travelling squad, while youngsters Adam Armstrong, Rolando Aarons, Kevin Mbabu, Jamie Sterry and Paul Woolston are also involved.

Tim Krul, Massadio Haidara and Emmanuel Riviere are not on the tour as they all work their way back to fitness on Tyneside following injuries.

Here is the Newcastle United squad:

Rolando Aarons, Vurnon Anita, Adam Armstrong, Jack Colback, Karl Darlow, Siem de Jong, Paul Dummett, Rob Elliot, Jesus Gamez, Dwight Gayle, Yoan Gouffran, Daryl Janmaat, Jamaal Lascelles, Kevin Mbabu, Chancel Mbemba, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez, Matt Ritchie, Henri Saivet, Matz Sels, Jonjo Shelvey, Jamie Sterry, Florian Thauvin, Cheick Tiote, Georginio Wijnaldum, Paul Woolston

Florian Thauvin and Adam Armstrong are in the squad and it’s a little strange that Adam is in the squad since we though he wasn’t yet fully fit.

But neither is Rob Elliot so they are being taken along to bond with the squad for the team spirit.

Wonder if that means that Tim Krul, Massadio Haidara and Emmanuel Riviere will be sold?

But in any case, that’s a strong squad Rafa has taken to County Kildare for a training and fitness camp and also to do some bonding of the players to build up that all important team spirit.

Comments welcome.

Nut meg they’re in Austria for a training camp so it is quite possible he got injured in training, although I don’t believe it myself 🙂

  • 2 geordie157 // Jul 9, 2016 at 5:49 PM

Interesting to see that bigi, ameobi and vuckic aren’t with the squad. Would assume all three will be off.

  • 3 Ian Toon // Jul 9, 2016 at 6:01 PM

Just reporting in. Hope you’re having a good summer. Really looking forward to watching our starting line up at Fulham. What a great transfer window. I am going to have to swat up on our squad. Some things I guess though don’t change. Like Jail still conducting blog polls with his crayola crayons. I’ll save him the bother Rafa and Newcastle are on the up.

I can see a quality Striker being bought to replace Cisse.

  • 4 Fostino // Jul 9, 2016 at 6:08 PM

Plane for hayden and hanley as well ; ). Bigi..vuckic…Sammy are gone. Riverie might be too. Looks like no takers for tiote and goofy yet

  • 5 Toon-Barmy // Jul 9, 2016 at 6:19 PM

No Curtis Good either, will that lad ever be fit?

  • 6 ShirebrookToon // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:03 PM

Is this Isaac Hayden kid any good? Never seen him play and what’s his best position?

  • 7 Tsunki // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:08 PM

Ahhh…Belfast isn’t here atm Ian, had to take one of the whippets to get wormed, I’m sure someone can make you a cup of tea while you wait. Maybe you could put one his old comedy routines on to entertain you. I hear the Breeze Block Challenge is a classic.

  • 8 Tsunki // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:09 PM

You’d think they’d at least take part of Curtis Good with them, just to show willing.

  • 9 Our Toon // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:32 PM

There will be takers for tiote bit makes no sense getting rid of him. Don’t know why Welshy was discussing Carroll on previous thread, do ppl realise we are in the championship?

It’s interesting building this team bit hopefully we use common sense and not sign to many players as they’ll all need to gel, also for promotion we need players that can take to the prem if we go up.

  • 10 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:40 PM

    Our Toon

You are kidding right, championship season he scored 17 goals.

  • 11 Yo-yo // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:46 PM

Carroll is on £££ good money at a decent club with a decent manager. Why would he want to drop a division ?

  • 12 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:47 PM

    Am i seeing things.

On sky sports news, Sky sources, Bradford city activate £1 release clause in Blackpool goalkeeper Colin Doyle’s Contract.

  • 13 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:50 PM

Decent manager, decent team, drop down a league.

Didn’t we sign Ritchie and Gamez.

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:50 PM

How was your vacation in America, nobody realised you were over there, (c)arl told us. Did you read Jamie Carraghers book over there, the bit about Robbie Keane creased me up. Jack Root read it too!

  • 15 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:52 PM

Not to mention signing Benitez, who could have gone anywhere in the world, could have ended up in China with big money, could have joined cisse,

    Ha ha ha

  • 16 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:54 PM

read that he’s joined us to play def mid,and he came coz he was promised a regular start in that position as he was supposedly about to rejoin hull on a loan…as for is any good no idea but people have said on here earlier that they read he has massive potential….thats about it,he can play rb cb but prefers def/mid.thats just pieced together for different places…if it helps.

  • 17 Our Toon // Jul 9, 2016 at 7:59 PM

Have you been drinking mate? Carroll was cutting his teeth with the club when we last played in the championship, he’s on far to much money and wouldn’t want to come back to play in this league, not to mention he’d cost 20m plus.

Richie was signed from Bournemouth, big difference between nufc and Bournemouth compared to nufc and West ham. As for Rafa signing why wouldn’t he? He’s been given free reign complete control that’s why he’s here. Gamez played 4 games last season he’s come here for a final pay packet. Championship has its own set of rules on FFP and they are more strict than the prem.

Come back to reality unless you were talking of Swansea signing Carroll

  • 18 ShirebrookToon // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:00 PM

    Cheers springy

  • 19 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:07 PM

I have had a few drinks mate, wouldn’t mind him joining swans rather him than gomiss.

    Ha ha ha

  • 21 lesh // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:16 PM

Blackpool’s skint and a quid’s a quid. Every little helps you know.

  • 22 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:37 PM

Not overly thrilled about losing Cisse and Collocini with one year on their contracts, to be replaced by Gayle and Hanley for instance on longer ones, but I can understand it. It becomes a far bigger problem should we lose our better players like Janmaat, Sissoko and Widjnaldum and replace them with lesser ones. Then instead of an epl squad in the Championship, we have a good Championship one, which makes things less certain in terms of going back up, and then reshaping again to stay up, considering it’s easier to release players and replace than sell them and replace.

  • 23 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:45 PM

This kid Hayden will be on 5 years but Championship wages and with Championship experience, which is far less risky of course than untested players from foreign leagues signed to long contracts on epl money, who you can’t shift if they don’t measure up, which they often don’t. That little experiment now hopefully reigned in to some degree.

  • 24 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:51 PM

The Carroll idea is unlikely, but far from being beyond belief. He was offered to us last season for 15m, but I imagine his wages were a sticking point. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in our colours sometime though. Stranger things have happened.
Does anyone know how far Arma is along recovery? Last I heard he was running but not playing. Seems odd he’s gone to Ireland. Maybe he’s one of those quick healers? As much as I want him to show Rafa in person what he can do, doing it whilst injured would be just crazy. No doubt Rafa’s had a look at his vids by now, so he’ll have a clue how good he is. 😉

  • 25 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 8:59 PM

Jimmy, I reckon Rafa’s made it obvious that players will only go if it’s what’s best for the club. I honestly think he has no intention of selling both Sissoko and Wijnaldum because it would weaken the squad. The purpose is to go straight back up after all. He has complete control and if he doesn’t want to sell, he won’t. I’m not sure who we could get to replace them myself.

  • 26 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:05 PM

Yes, I really do hope we can keep them, and of course keep them happy and focused, and performing at peak level, otherwise we will have some problems we could do without.

  • 27 Jail for Ashley // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:07 PM

Who did you expect them to be replaced with mate. Rafa is putting together a squad to get us promoted not push for top six of the PL. Had that minor detail of relegation not happened we’d have seen a different type of signing no doubt. We need to get promoted before wondering how the team will fare in the PL. Like I said before I don’t think they’ll be planning an assault on the CL in our first season back so these players are laying down the foundations of future success. Collocini was great in the Championship last time but that was six years ago, it was better for all parties that he went on his way.

  • 28 SUTTY1978 // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:09 PM

Don’t believe that Isaac has been promised a start. He couldn’t get in the Hull team for half the games last season. I would hope he’s no more than a bench warmer. Wenger doesn’t let players with massive potential leave at 21, he lets the ones go that have no chance of ever getting into the Arsenal first team.

  • 29 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:13 PM

Jim, it’s probably down to Rafa’s powers of persuasion and if he can sell them the idea of one season. I would say you stay this season and i guarantee you a move next. Guaranteed. They are, after all, under contract and that would be a fair offer all round. They’d play well to keep clubs interested and we could replace them in the PL a lot simpler than we could now. We know from history he sticks by his word and we know 40k whining chelsea fans couldn’t shift him and boy, did they try!

  • 30 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:17 PM

I think the signings are understandable, as I said, just make the point that you can’t replace better players like Sissoko, Janmaat and Widjnaldum effectively in the Championship, and that it’s easier to replace a player coming off contract than to have to both sell and replace.

  • 31 carl // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:19 PM

Did you read Louise Taylor on Sissoko today?

  • 32 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:23 PM

Hippo Heed for England manager? WTF!! Is it any wonder England never win anything with that sort of mentality? How can he be even in the running? It’s worse than Pardew. I hope the FA get better, because they must be seriously ill to consider that clown. Let’s hope it remains ‘just an option’.

  • 33 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:23 PM

regarding arma,im a bit unsure of what his actual injury is,when it was first reported, they said it was a thigh strain, then it was knee problem…so hard to say where his recovery is for me.

  • 34 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:25 PM

Jail, I’ve been arguing for some time that they don’t need replacing for a Championship season, and would have come off contract at a time we would be looking at better players than Gayle and Hanley, who are fine now, but probably not what we’ll need beyond. Cisse and Collocini will have gone for a number of reasons, and they are replaceable, but the other three I mentioned far less so, but I do think Rafa is odds on to persuade them to stay.

  • 35 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:30 PM

just read that guardian article about sissoko, seems sissoko is the next captain apparently.

  • 36 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:32 PM

Springy, that’s what i heard mate. I know he was running with the squad, but not joining in with the ball. That was a few days ago, so you just don’t know. Have to wait n see I suppose.

  • 37 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:34 PM

Springy, that would make sense. I know how frustrating he can be, but he’ll destroy the Championship. If that keeps him here, then fair enough.

  • 38 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:36 PM

bobby where do you stand on gini….keep and maybe put up with the months of pet lips and half arsed performances or get rid and use the money to get a few more players in….unless he has a total 180 reversal and commits to the club i think there maybe bother with him….tbh the same could possibly be said for sissoko.

  • 39 jimmysmith // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:38 PM

Thanks Carl, just read it now. Sissoko won’t fancy a Championship season, but Rafa I’m sure will argue his and our case well, and we apparently don’t need the money. So I remain hopeful he and the others will stay, but accept it must be touch and go, and will be tough to keep all three, although important we keep as many as we can.

  • 40 manxpie // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:43 PM

Take a look at @NUFC’s Tweet:
bobby just for you arma is fully training in the pics of the site so he must not be injured mbemba looks a happy fella too

  • 41 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:46 PM

Springy, the problem is, they’re very good players and i’d keep them if possible. Lots of players have a tough first season in England and then come good. If they don’t give 100% nobody will want them next season, so I think if they stay they will try. This is why Rafa is gaffer though mate. Tough decisions and hard negotiations! 😉

  • 42 bettyswallocks // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:48 PM

Bobby……. Can you imagine the smug look on fat SAMs face if he got the England job. He’d be so up his own arse. He once said he should be managing one of the top clubs like Real Madrid . He’s the most arrogant egotistical tosser in football.

We’d be better off with Bruce Forsyth and Jim Bowen as assistant. Brucie could say,”Good game, good game.” and Jim Bowen could say, “Have a look at what you could have won.”

  • 43 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:50 PM

some good pics of them training and all look fairly happy and enjoying it…even if it is pissing down!!lol

  • 44 SPRINGY // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:51 PM

    aye tough decisions ahead!

  • 45 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:55 PM

Cheers manx.betty, i know, the idea that he’s even under consideration is scary. I’m glad i remember 66 so well, coz i doubt i’ll see it again in my life. Who makes these lists up? He’ll probably get sunlun relegated this season and he’s in the frame. The mind boggles.

  • 46 Belfast // Jul 9, 2016 at 9:58 PM

He’s being considered because Fergies bum chum David Gill is on the panel that searches for the next boss, and Fergie is beating the fat Sam drum loudly.

  • 47 Belfast // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:02 PM

I’m enjoying it very much Ian thanks.

I think Jail gave up on his jail gov Crayola polls after the first one (thankfully)

  • 48 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:03 PM

Belfast, well he would do mate, he’s a flaming Jock! I bet he’d love to see hippo heed as England’s boss. Like we’d love to see john Carver manage scotland! 😉

  • 49 carl // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:04 PM

Given that Sissoko was booed off when subbed at around 70 minutes in McClaren’s last game v Bournemouth he managed to turn things round under Benitez.

“Rafa-ologists” expected Benítez swiftly to jettison Sissoko. Instead the new manager dropped the £12m Jonjo Shelvey, while shifting the Frenchman to No10 and making him captain.

“Moussa helps me a lot, the French players follow him,” said the Spaniard, who was repaid by a renascent attacking midfield leader as Newcastle ended last season on a five-game unbeaten run
Along the way the pair formed a strong bond, with the former echoing Deschamps in praising his “intelligence” and Sissoko’s four-year-old son even being allowed to steal the manager’s dugout seat on occasion.

Since then Deschamps’ longstanding faith has been similarly rewarded by his protege’s impressive interpretation of a right-sided role which maximises Paul Pogba’s talents while potentially disrupting Benítez’s plans. “I’m in contact with Moussa,” said Benítez, defiantly. “Hopefully he’ll help France win and then help Newcastle. We don’t have to sell anyone we don’t want to sell. If someone makes a big offer we’ll analyse it but, for now, we’ll say no to everyone.”

It’s significant that Benitez played Moussa in his preferred position. If he buys into Rafa’s programme going forward then he could play a key role and would enhance his value going forward.

What perverse enjoyment to you get from posting under different accounts?

  • 52 Belfast // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:06 PM

He would never be able to hack the England job anyway, mainly the criticism that comes with it. He loves himself too much.

  • 53 Belfast // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:09 PM

It was in the Sun a few days after Woy got the boot. Fergie was being heavily consulted and he was recommending big Sam.

  • 68 carl // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:26 PM

  • 70 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:31 PM

  • 73 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:47 PM

I’m fine thanks YMFB. I trust all is rosy your end? Aye, we’d be in trouble without Rafa for sure. He hasn’t won what he’s won by being lucky. Good time to be a mag at long last.

    According to tomorrow’s mirror

transfer chase for Liverpool and Everton target Georginio Wijnaldum of Newcastle

Spurs are confident of landing the goal-scoring midfielder as they have many players they can offer the relegated Geordies in exchange PLUS: Janmaat eyed

Also in the paper wanted to do deal with Liverpool for Gini, he wanted Jordan Ibe.

So then gents who would you like from Spurs, Deli Ali, Kane.

    Ha ha ha

  • 75 welshgeordie9 // Jul 9, 2016 at 10:52 PM

Benitez that is, that wanted Ibe.

  • 76 Bobbybee // Jul 9, 2016 at 11:07 PM

Right, got to depart. Thanks for the craic. Later.

  • 77 geordie157 // Jul 9, 2016 at 11:16 PM

If gini is worth 25 mill, 15 plus Carroll and Pritchard would be alright…..

If it’s Liverpool Ibe plus cash.
