Photos – Video – Rafa Gets Squad Down To Work Immediately

11:28 pm, Saturday, July 9th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 41 Comments

Once the lads touched down in Ireland late this afternoon Rafa Benitez had them out for a training session – initially in the pouring rain.

This man doesn’t mess around!

Love it.

    Ashley Out!

  • 2 Tsunki // Jul 9, 2016 at 11:52 PM

Just in case you thought that one had faded away.

  • 3 Tsunki // Jul 9, 2016 at 11:53 PM

Bit of a back slapping fest here lately, about twenty different posters but only three people actually agreeing heartily with themselves. Fantastic bloggery.

  • 4 bettyswallocks // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:03 AM

    I heartily agree.

  • 5 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:07 AM

Mr Multiple keeping the conversation pumping tonight…

On footballing matters I’d find it an odd decision to keep Sissoko. He’s shown nothing but contempt for our club since signing, deciding only to show up for the big games where he can showcase his wears to the “big” teams whilst going missing in the games we needed him.

I’d sooner keep Riviere on our wages doing absolutely f**k all than seeing that utter disgrace of a footballer don our jersey next season.

  • 6 bettyswallocks // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:12 AM

Ruddy………. As you were adamant that Rafa wouldn’t be staying and that we are doomed as a sporting institution whilst Ashley is the owner, how do you now foresee the approaching season.

  • 7 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:34 AM

I was very surprised Rafa stayed, Ashley still remains a scourge on our club and whatever positives we’ve seen this summer have come off the back of a 2nd relegation under his stewardship (or have you forgotten that…)

I personally think we’ll walk the Championship (as we should) and anything other than a record breaking points haul is a failure on our part.

Guess that means we’re not getting promoted eh Betty?

  • 8 jimmysmith // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:45 AM

Ashley’s never had a truly top notch football man at the club, and certainly one that was resistant to his will, until now. “Scourge” might have been a fair assessment in the past, but with all this long overdue sunlight, it’s hard to see how he still can be, for the present at least.

  • 9 bettyswallocks // Jul 10, 2016 at 12:54 AM

Ruddy…….. I have no interest in regurgitating the Ashley discussion but if he has finally realised that a football club can’t operate without a competent football person overseeing things then it does appear we have made a breakthrough.

Most fans seem to be of the opinion that a season in the championship with Rafa as manager, working to build a competetive team is more appealing than trying to muddle through in the PL with a useless Head Coach.
We have suffered relegation twice now under Ashley as you rightly point out so appointing a manager of Rafa’s calibre is hopefully a long overdue step in the right direction.
Expecting to walk the championship with a record points haul is a win win for you .You can enjoy the success if you are a genuine fan and continue your campaign of hatred for Ashley if not .

    You still

  • 10 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2016 at 1:06 AM

My campaign of hatred for Mike Ashley is eternal regardless of what comes from this point onwards. He can never regain my trust.

Rafa is indeed good for the club, I await to see what he can do. Early green shoots of recovery are looking promising but people need to temper themselves as we’ve had false dawns in the past.

Simply choosing to not have the MA discussion is your choice, you’ve a short memory, but please don’t ever question my credentials as a “real fan” you arrogant prick.

  • 11 bettyswallocks // Jul 10, 2016 at 1:29 AM

Ruddy………. It is likewise your choice to continue your hatred of Ashley and to discuss him and his failings to your hearts content with whoever feels the inclination to accommodate you.

What I do find unacceptable is for you to try and force your views down people’s throats and make them feel guilty about buying season tickets and attending matches you Ashley-Obsessed bully.

I was just thinking that actually – ‘magine if Ashley decides to do another Keegan on Rafa

    Ruddy and betty

Sounds like you lads need to get a room and kiss and make up!

You both sound like me and my missus having a stoush with each other.

John Paul Young said it best…. LOVE IS IN THE AIR…

No but on a serious note just learn to appreciate each others pasion for the club i know its hard with Fat Cashly in see both sides of the argunent he was good for the club paying off our interest bearing debt and not charge us any interest but on the flip side he did it too advertise his business worldwide and the way he has a pea brain non footballing chairmen and the risks that he takes with selling our best players just really shows he loves a punt or several and that too me me is not good business at all

  • 15 chicousa // Jul 10, 2016 at 3:42 AM

The current focus on strengthening the defense is so welcome after all these years of neglect. You might think Rafa knows what he is doing or something?!!! Now that Cisse is gone I hope the #9 shirt goes to Mitrovich! Mitro just has to learn how to control that agression, and harness it! He will be pivotal this season!

  • 16 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 10, 2016 at 5:32 AM

I hope Mitrovic gets the number 9 shirt too. I think he has a genuine respect for it. I like him as a player as well. Notwithstanding all his trials and tribulations I thought he was one of the highlights of last season. Despite the relegation we seem to be in a much better place than we were this time last year; wandering aimlessly around North America with the abject Wally at the helm, and Carr and Charnley back home cooking up their dirty transfer deals with Mondial et al.

  • 17 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 10, 2016 at 5:56 AM

In other sporting news, full marks to that bull in Spain. Well in son.

  • 18 chicousa // Jul 10, 2016 at 6:38 AM

Gotta say it was comforting checking in on the blog tonight and seeing Tsunki log an “Ashley Out” post! Feels like old times!!! 😉

  • 19 JAMSHA // Jul 10, 2016 at 6:48 AM

any news,on issac ? been dull lately

  • 20 chicousa // Jul 10, 2016 at 6:56 AM

What are your thoughts on Moussa Sissoko? Granted, he dissappeared for much of the past season(s) but one cannot deny his strengths when fully motivated! I think many if not most top players would have been frustrated and unmotivated playing for the likes of McClaren and Carver. I would like to see him stay to see what Rafa could get out of him! I know that it is unlikely to happen of course…

  • 21 jazzyp // Jul 10, 2016 at 6:58 AM

Aaaahhhh it’s good to have Ruddy back.He sure knows how to make friends…..Nust anyone ??

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2016 at 7:04 AM

You just have to doff your hat to the level of double standards shown by the w 😉 nker bobbybee and welsh. Ian Toon ‘pops” in after months of not posting and has a snipe at me, considering I’ve hardly posted over the last few days. Not a peep from the winter or welsh, he then sends in carl to talk football and welsh accuses me of trying to spoil the blog. Qudos Ian you’ve now got welsh, Bobby and Belfast well on board.

  • 23 Ron Knee // Jul 10, 2016 at 7:17 AM

    Yes, well done, bull!

  • 26 Mister Tuff // Jul 10, 2016 at 7:35 AM

Jail – I was continually checking the blog last night to see if there was any further transfer news when to my surprise the Master Multiple appeared and I can confirm he for no reason had a pop at you. Clearly goading you for a ruck.
Fail to see how this transfers into Welsh saying you started the “trouble”.
As has also been remarked on, certain parties joined forces to have a pop – including big gob who brags he does no such things.
Horrible people -two faced hypocrites ruining the blog.

  • 27 Mister Tuff // Jul 10, 2016 at 7:38 AM

Anyway hope the French win tonight. Plus there should be another opportunity to see how Sissoko does – and hopefully the long awaited CR7 hissy fit.
    Back to the pit.

This is a blog. Personally i’ll talk to who i choose to talk to. In fact, i still don’t get the obsession with multiples. For all any of us know, we could be talking to just three people. Why does it matter? Nobody else cares. I don’t generally look to who i reply to, i reply to the content. In your cases i tend to just laugh. You’ve both done it again. First comments are to attack other posters. Why? This isn’t a popularity contest. People make their own choices as to who they talk to, nobody requires your permission. You really are a pair of clowns. I’m not ‘well on board’ with anybody. I DON’T KNOW ANYBODY ON HERE, so how can I be? People have just grown sick of your constant attacks on other posters and finally spoke up. Good for them. Just do yourselves a favour and stick to football, instead of whining that people don’t like you. This is a football blog and if ian, carl welshie, jib or anybody else is chatting football, i’ll join in because that’s the purpose of coming on here. The last thing i heard from you jail, last night, was an attack on ian. The first thing i hear today, is an attack on me and others. Is it any wonder people don’t like you? If you can’t stick to football, try another blog and do us all a favour.

  • 30 expatmag // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:04 AM

You started off your kast post really and I was actually quite impressed before half way through, you descended into the mire by calling them clowns, which in essence, doesnt make you any better than them. Does it?

  • 31 Bobbybee // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:07 AM

Not even eight o’clock on a sunday morning. I’m sure i’ve got better things to do than listen to this tripe.

  • 32 expatmag // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:13 AM

Then you know where the door is. Dont let it smack you on the arse on your way out…….lol

Hy the way.. 5pm on sunday where I am

  • 33 Bobbybee // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:14 AM

Expat, first thing i see when i log on? They are clowns, but the sort nobody laughs at. Nay bother, i’ve plenty other things to do, just thought i’d have an early start but maybe not. I’ll come back on when the grown ups come on, if i can be bothered. First posts – attack in union. Same people if you ask me! 😉

  • 34 expatmag // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:17 AM

Right to the three stooges, and I’m only saying this once.

Jail, it was peaceful all day yesterday with a lot of us talking about football then out of nowhere you come on wIth an attack on Carl, I couldn’t give a rats arse if he’s using 3 names like zippie, George or frigging bungle, then you got stirrers on like expat and tuff bringing it up, why, nothing against the three of you but you should be enjoying what’s happening this season, whatever was said in the past just leave it there.

That’s all I’m saying on the matter, don’t bother replying petty comments, I will reply to football matters.

  • 41 carl // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:42 AM

On Sissoko. I was at the Bournemouth game and Sissoko along with the rest of the team had been shocking an all time low. In fact for much of last season he had gone missing in matches and generally been inconsistent. Nevertheless, in the B’mouth game he had endured orchestrated abuse from a good number of our fans during the match and a barrage of abuse when he was subbed. All of which did not help him or the team. I have never understood so called fans shouting abuse at our players. In doesn’t help the player or the team.

Under Benitez, Sissoko has done very well and he has put in consistent performances and taken this form into the Euro’s. He’s got a clearly defined role and seems to enjoy himself in a way that he didn’t when I saw him.. Looking to next season in the Championship with his power and pace he could be a monster of a player leading the charge. I hope he stays and continues to thrive under Benitez.
