Hanley Deal Proving Difficult – Hayden Signing Expected Today

8:23 am, Sunday, July 10th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

We didn’t expect new Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle to want to sell his captain and best player Grant Hanley and it seems that if Newcastle want to sign the 24 year-old  Scottish International center-back  they will have to bid higher – higher than the second bid of £4.5M Newcastle put in yesterday.

Grant did not feature at all in Blackburn’s first friendly of the season last night when they beat  SV Ried 1-0 in Austria with the only goal coming from Gateshead-born Danny Graham – the former Sunderland striker.

Grant Hanley – Blackburn don’t want to sell

Blackburn said that Hanley had picked up an injury on Friday in training.

Owen Coyle was interviewed after last night’s game and had this to say about his captain:

“I don’t want to sell Grant. Can’t stop clubs enquiring about your players. In my opinion they’re nowhere near the valuation of Grant.”

So assuming Newcastle lodged their second bid yesterday afternoon it would appear £4.5M is still not enough and Blackburn’s Indian owners, the Venky’s family, can be difficult negotiators.

Of course Rafa Benitez does have alternatives he can turn to if he thinks Grant is now too expensive,  so it will be interesting to see if anything materializes on the potential Hanley transfer today.

Isaac Hayden – signing should be announced today

But we expect 21 year-old defensive utility player Isaac Hayden to be announced soon as Newcastle’s 5th signing of the summer, with Sky Sports reporting yesterday the Arsenal player will sign a five year deal with the fee reported via other outlets to be around £2.5M.

The news was issued on Sky Sports’ Pete Graves’ Twitter account late yesterday afternoon.

This looks like another great signing by Rafa Benitez.

Finally, the Newcastle squad touched down in Ireland late yesterday afternoon and had a training session almost immediately as the week-long training, fitness and bonding camp got under way.

Rafa took a 26 man squad to County Kildare, but strangely it did not include goalkeeper Tim Krul – so there are rumors he could be sold.

We should get the news soon that Isaac Hayden is Newcastle’s 5th signing this summer – that would be good news for this Sunday morning.

Comments welcome.

Just noticed that 53% of fans would give the iconic no9 shirt to Mitro..Personally would leave it vacant as I don’t believe he did much last season to deserve that accolade.

From what I read last season, he has always worn 45

I think Ron Knee has been contemplating the fluff in his navel……

I read that if he can’t get the 9 shirt he takes 45 as 4 + 5 = 9, so if he was offed the 9 he would take it.

His idol is a certain Mr Shearer who made the No9 his own.Im sure he would take the shirt if offered

Quite simple mate…..based on the fact he is shyte…..a tually based on the fact that I dont believe he is worth the 5 million plus quid a very ordinary Blackburn want for him and yjat I would rathr produce one of our own kids as a back up centre half .

As an extention to my last post and apologising for the spelling errors on my phone, especially as I have just ordered my 5th glass of sav.blanc, we have Lascelles and Mbemba as first choice central defenders 0lus Dummett who is half decent and just spent 2.5 mollion quid on Hayden who us also a central defender, why would we waste 5 million plus on Hanley

Expat i dont know much about hanly but the more leaders we have around, the better. Why do u think he’s crap? How often have u seen him on tv etc?

  • 16 hibbitt // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:59 AM

so you haven’t seen him play
very good captain leads from the back takes no shit big solid player knows how to score can defend exactly what we need in the championship

as far as the kids go we haven’t got anyone coming through that’s any where near the first team
I don’t know about this new scottish kid

  • 17 Munster Mag // Jul 10, 2016 at 8:59 AM

Expat, because rafa is a defensive coach first and foremost. we still need a centre back for injuries. Hanly or a good championship centre half will either take a jersey or put real pressure to perform on the main 2

    morning all
with rumours late last night of interest from everton, spurs and liverpool for gini,i wonder if today is the start of flurry of bids coming in…and, since we need a cb.. is there any players at these clubs we realistically could ask for as part of a deal?

To be honest Newcastle should be trying to sign the other centeral defender at Blackburn, who is Shane Duffy, who also plays for Ireland, he is fantastic in the air and on the ground, reads the game very well, and is so dangerous at corners or free kicks, in my view he is the defender at Blackburn we should be going after.
