Newcastle Could Bid For Talented England U-21 Left Back

The Sun are reporting today that Newcastle United are interested in Southampton left-back Matt Targett and it seems that Rafa Benitez likes the look of the England U-21 International, who would cost around £5M.

The 6ft tall player usually plays at left-back but he can also play out on the left wing.

And it seems Rafa Benitez is trying to get a balance of new young players coupled with experience in the team for the coming important season in the Championship.

So it looks like Targett is  a target for Newcastle  – sorry about that.

Matt played for Scotland at the U-18 level before switching to England and he has played for the England U-19, U-20 and U-21 sides – with 19 appearances in total.

He has played 9 times for the U-21s and was part of the England U-21 squad that won the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer.

He is local Southampton lad who was born in Eastleigh.

Matt joined the Saints as a 9 year-old and came through their famous Youth Academy and made his first team debut in August of 2014 in a League Cup second round game at Millwall.

He was named as Southampton’s Young Player of the Season for 2014–2015

Matt has played 31 times for Southampton with 19 of those being in the Premier League, and it’s a good question as to whether new manager Claude Puel would want to sell his young star.

It would not be surprising if Newcastle follow up their interest with a bid of £5M for this top youngster.

Comments welcome.

It looks like a massive overhaul of our squad this summer..

We already “sold” cabella, colo, taylor, townsend, cisse, obertan, marveaux,.. Saviet, goufrann, rivi and possibly wini, sissoko, tiote, thauvin, Janmaat, krull, de jong to follow..

    Jesus lescalles mbemba New LB
    Hayden shelvey
    Gayle Perez ritchie

    Anita New cb dummet haidara
    Colback New cm
    New rm New cam aarons

If the plan follows through we still need 5 more players in..mostly squad players, but still..

Rotonda don’t know how you can say Rafa transformed Townsend?? He was immense for QPR performed very well for England but something didn’t fit with Spurs and he fell out with the staff which made the situation much worse. Townsend has always been a good quality winger and will continue to be a good quality winger at Palace. Rafa did not transform him at all.

So we appear to be after 2 more CBs, a LB and another striker, then if anyone leaves we will replace them?

What the dickens is Rafa doing?!? This is not the NUFC I know anymore!

Seriously though he is doing some business isn’t he? We could be quite the outfit when he’s done

How about we try and do this with Gini and Sissoko…

Tottenham offer £10mil plus Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard (more midfield cover and Pritchard can replace Gini) for Wijnaldum

Liverpool offer £2-5mil plus Jordan Ibe for Sissoko?

This way we will have replaced both players and will have more depth imo

I’d also be over the moon with Ibe if we could take him from Bournemouths grasp (we won’t obviously but if we did oh I’d have to have a sit down)

Let’s be a bit balanced on that. Many people, not just me had doubts about Townsend from what we had seen previously. The fact he blossomed under Rafa is not just coincidence.

I agree with you. To display your talent and ability you have to be selected. Townsend kept himself fit and was looking for an opportunity prior to Euro selection to catch the eye. Managers fallout frequently with players often as a means of motivation. Townsend played for us as he reportedly did for the club’s he had previously been on loan to. He in my opinion is a true professional and I hope he continues to progress his career.

I’m slightly disappointed we haven’t signed a potential superstar from Spain or South America. I’m sure Rafa must have his feelers out in those countries. I would have liked an unknown from one of the lower leagues over there. There’s still time mind.

I like the look of Dominic Ball a good young CB at Spurs and on loan at Rangers last season. But he’s not as good not as good as Isaac Hayden who Arsenal fans I know rate very highly. They thought it was going to be a loan signing. Reportedly Arsenal are planning signings at CB and DM.

    Repost from previous thread

Bournemouth’ll pay £15m for Ibe and as they’re a Prem club with loadsamoney to blow, then yes market forces will prevail.

However, we’re not a Prem club and thus ain’t got the same amount of cash to throw around. So, if we’re in for a player, the selling club and/ or players’ agents will be keen to draw Prem or other cash-rich clubs into the bidding.

I think we’re seeing this with Hanley but maybe we need to ensure he’s keen to join us and make a realistic bid for him. We’re said to have made a second bid of £4.5m but that seems low in today’s market. Maybe Charnley’s handling the bidding while Rafa’s in Ireland and he’s doing his usual trying to look like a clever boy for Ashley? If we really do want Hanley, we should stop pi$$ing about and make a realistic take it or leave it offer for him. Have we got time to fanny about? No

You’re overlooking the fact that we have a special arrangement with Liverpool FC. They’ll have sackloads of cash to spend so if they want any of our players, then they pay top-dollar, say £35-40m for Gini and at least that for Sissoko!

Sissoko is keeping some very talented and expensive players out. I don’t quite understand why some of our fans are willing him to fail. To be proven right?

It’s a win-win situation if he has one more good game. We keep him, we have a very good player who’ll rip up the championship. We sell, we want 40+.

I would like us to see our other best player stay as well. You need better players than the rest of the teams, to win. A coach can’t actually play.

Thank you for showing some pragmatism. It seems that it has been exchange for a delusional amount of anger regarding those two. Imagine how much they could improve/showcase their talent if they played in a formation they were comfortable with and a squad that is as confident as we must be with Rafa in charge.

The Chronicle reporting TOON will sign Arsenal youngster Isaac Hayden on a five-year contract. Lee Ryder, the Chief Sports Writer at the Chronicle, also reveals that Rafa Benitez plans to use the versatile Englishman as a midfield player.

The deal will go through within the next 24 hours. Terms have been agreed between the respective parties, and once the medical goes through then he becomes an official Newcastle United player.

There is a good chance he will make his Toon Army debut in one of their pre-season friendlies on their tour of Ireland. That could be against Bohemian FC.
