Some Confusion On Status Of Two French Wingers At Newcastle

There has been news all this year that once Remy Cabella played 12 games for Marseilles on loan, his permanent transfer for around £7.5M would be activated and the deal completed once the transfer window opened officially on July 1st.

But there has been nothing about Cabella recently and he did not report back for preseason training on July 1st, yet he is still officially a Newcastle player.

There’s some news in the local press today that his future could be cleared up this week.

Remy Cabella – what’s his status?

That hopefully should be straight forward, but the status of Florian Thauvin is not.

The news from Italy and Lazio earlier this summer was that incoming new manager Marcelo Bielsa was keen on getting Florian to Lazio, once he finally took over the Rome-based club.

Marcelo had been head coach at Marseille and had got the best out of the 23 year-old winger in France so a deal with Lazio – whether that is a loan deal or permanent deal – had been expected.

But then Marcelo walked out of the club after only two days as manager citing Lazio’s failure to sign one player this summer as the reason for him quitting the club.

A bizarre situation if ever there was one.

Florian Thauvin in Ireland this week – he still looks cold!

Lazio have threatened legal action against Bielsa, so while that mess is being sorted out they quickly appointed Simone Inzaghi as head coach; he has been interim coach since April when Stefano Pioli was fired.

Lazio have said they are still working on transfers and they will almost certainly need to replace their winger Antonio Candreva, who has been targeted by some big clubs like Chelsea and Napoli and would coast around £25M.

That’s where Florian Thauvin initially came into the equation – as a replacement for Candreva, but there is some confusion as to whether that potential deal is still possible.

Rafa Benitez will have taken a good look at Florian in training since he returned to Newcastle on July 1st.

But it looks like Rafa wants a permanent transfer of the player out of the club – unless Florian is really impressive in training and Rafa thinks about keeping him.

If that turns out to be the case – however unlikely – the Newcastle manager could send him out on a season-long loan deal and then bring him back next summer when hopefully we are back in the Premier League.

But whatever happens it looks like it could take some time to sort out Thauvin’s future this summer.

Hopefully Newcastle will get half of this puzzle sorted out this week, with Remy Cabella confirmed as having signed on permanently at Marseille.
