Benitez Makes Surprise Move In Transfer Market

1:16 pm, Tuesday, July 12th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 54 Comments

The Mirror is reporting today that Rafa Benitez is preparing to make a surprise move for former England striker Peter Crouch.

Of course Rafa signed Crouch for Liverpool back in 2005 and Peter stayed there for three years before moving to Portsmouth and the 35 year-old is now at Stoke City.

Peter Crouch – is Rafa after him?

Peter is way past his best and not young at 35 (he turns 36 in January), but perhaps Rafa thinks he can do a job for a couple of years at Newcastle – he would be  a stop-gap signing but could still do a decent job for us.

Crouch has only one year left on his contract at the Potters and could be brought in for chicken-feed and would likely be willing to drop down a level to reunite with his former boss, who got the best out of him at Liverpool.

Peter played 134 games at Liverpool and scored 42 goals and of course with his height of 6ft 7ins he is dominant in the air and is still a great header of the ball.

The Mirror is reporting that Newcastle would be able to offer him regular football in the Championship with the striker making only 18 appearances for Stoke last season with only four league starts.

Dropping down a level may also be good for Peter with him being in the twilight of his career and he is certainly a good physical player well suited to the Championship.

Peter has had a good career and played for over 10 top clubs and he’s  made 639 total first team appearances with 187 goals.

Would Peter Crouch Be A Good Signing For Newcastle?

Can’t see there being any truth in this at all.

  • 2 Jib // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:20 PM

Could end up a great swansong for the big fella.
I am sure Rafa thinks Mitro could learn from him.

  • 3 welshgeordie9 // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:22 PM

Since cisse left, we haven’t been linked with any forwards until now with crouch, plus Benitez wants experience and they know each other, don’t really know what to make of this story.

  • 4 Nufc-83 // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:22 PM

    No thanks next.

  • 5 martoon // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:23 PM

I like Crouch but I can’t help but feel a couple of years ago great but now just a bit too old.

  • 6 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:27 PM

like most,a few years ago aye maybe for crouch but not now,he looks semi retired as it is tbh,i see bamford mentioned again.

  • 7 welshgeordie9 // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:28 PM

It would make sense as Mitrovic is going to miss the first 4 games, we do need height up front.

  • 8 LGFUAD21 // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:29 PM

I think we are 100% spot on to raise the fee for Moussa.

He’s shown hos true colours at this tournament.

Couldnt be bothered to show up all season then plays like that at the Euros.

I dont want him anywhere near this team, but I also want to make an example of him and the bigger clubs who think they can just pinch players.

If this was Gini, i’d have more sympathy but Moussa is a traitor to this club. Let’s turn a negative into a positive and raise some cash for a good team to be built.

    On Crouchy?

Why not. Yeah he’s past it but he could be a good addition. Plenty of experience. Does his job. Could be great for winning tight games.

  • 9 Rotonda heights // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:31 PM

i thought rafa liked quick, mobile skilful strikers who can get in behind. Mitro isn’t and crouch never was.

  • 10 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:32 PM

chelsea apparently after kante and sissoko mentioned as replacement for him at leicester, sissoko could never get stuck in and have the defensive awareness to do kantes job.

  • 11 Jib // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:37 PM

Shearer finished his final season with 10 goals in 32 league games – older that Crouch is now.

Couch had groin surgery over a year ago and should this season be back to full fitness after only 18 games (9 as sub) last season for Stoke.

  • 12 Jib // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:43 PM

Mind Crouch has to be told in no uncertain terms to bin that shite goal dance !

  • 13 kilcline // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:44 PM

Crouch would be good for experience and seeing games out for final 20 with defending as well as we need a goal.

Would love to see us get Targett who saints fan rated more than shaw! Loftus cheek would be an amazing signing but can’t see it. If we got bamford in as he is proven at this level would be delighted and will improve so not bad for a season in prem.

Ibe would be icing on the cake as he will only improve and tore the championship apart when he was at Derby.

  • 14 clinath@ed // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:47 PM

I understand the club as to deal with the two problems going forward.
    1. Put a side together to get out of this division.
    2. Develop a side that can survive in the Prem and grow from there.
It’s a fine balancing act, but in neither of these scenarios do I see Peter Crouch helping!

  • 15 Jib // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:50 PM

    Aston Villa

Crouch may as well sign for us he’s played for everyone else !!!

  • 16 jimmysmith // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:50 PM

Crouchy was once asked what he’d be if he wasn’t a footballer. He said a virgin.

  • 17 Ron Knee // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:55 PM

    Not tall enough.

  • 18 WWSBRD // Jul 12, 2016 at 1:56 PM

Odd link not sure I see it being true. Same with Ibe (although the amount of time being take on him moving suggests some stalling from his side) but we won’t be looking at another winger until Sissoko and Gini’s futures are sorted

  • 19 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM

Newcastle United trialist Tyler Harvery scored from the half-way line while on loan at Bath City last season. Also scored for Beardsley’s team’s 3-0 win at Bradford Park Avenue

    See his goal on chronicle

  • 21 lesh // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:25 PM

Crouch could be a good addition to the squad if Rafa wants rotation and flexibility. Crouch can mix it in the penalty area and his height could work for us, provided the crosses were well delivered. Get him in but let’s have another main striking option too – over and above Mitro, Gayle and Arma if he’s with us.

As far a Sissoko and his agent being pi$$ed off at our reported asking price of 35m, he must realise that Sissoko’s talked himself up and made public his desire to move on and up. In not shutting Sissoko up, he’s allowed his client/ nephew to pi$$ Rafa off, big time. Had Sissoko gone about things a little less arrogantly, he might have gained some understanding from the Club and its fans and he might have been able to get his move.

It’s too late now for Sissoko to redeem what is a messy situation so both he and his agent have got to shut up and let things happen as they should – quietly.

  • 22 lesh // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:31 PM

Whilst Leicester can offer ECL football, I think that as a club, it wouldn’t be big enough for Sissoko. Furthermore, there’s achance that Leicester will have been found out and they may prove to be a one season wonder. Where would that leave Sissoko? Dragging his arse as he did with us and wanting away, again!

Let’s hope Rafa gets him shipped out quick, preferably to mainland Europe!

  • 23 Rafa Revolution // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:34 PM

    Crouch??? ffs

  • 24 kilcline // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Bertrand just signed a 5 year deal at saints, hopefully allows Targett to join us!

  • 25 lesh // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:37 PM

Charlie, let’s not get carried away with the U21 result. They were playing Bradford Park Avenue, not Bradford City.

  • 26 adwend // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:41 PM

Crouch has had more clubs then I’ve had wiman (mind that wouldn’t be hard) ?

  • 27 manxpie // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:47 PM

I wouldn’t mind him for a year he’s the kind of player who will get ya quite a few important goals i.e a few late equalisers or winners

  • 30 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:53 PM

    according to shieldsgazette

  • 31 Belfast // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:53 PM

No, but I’d be very interested in his missus.

  • 32 giimps // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:56 PM

crouch , not for me but if we can get good balls into the box , get Gayle, arma and Perez snapping up the 2nd balls in and around the box.
It’s an option for when teams are sitting deep with no room for pace in behind….Mitro can do that too, but he’s probably the only other one as most of our other forwards are relatively shortarses

  • 33 Goofy // Jul 12, 2016 at 2:57 PM

Is there going to be any live video links online for our Campionship games or is it going to be radio links again? I know the Fulham game’s on Sky, was just hoping.

Did JIB just compare Peter Crouch to Alan Shearer?

  • 37 Munster Mag // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:19 PM

Makes sense. Wud score goals if fit. Gives us defensive height for corners, simplfies our attack when needed especially against defences lying deep at home. I have a feeling rafa will go for a more mobile big man. He’s not particularly known for his tica taca is our rafa. I have a feeling he doesnt rate mitro.

  • 38 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:21 PM

sissoko, has’nt the work rate, commitment, team ethic or desire to stick his heed in where it hurts, thats why he is a liability when defending corners and free kicks, for a big powerful bloke…to be blunt… he’s a bit of pussy.

  • 39 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:23 PM

i mean with regards to playing for leicester.

  • 40 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:24 PM

    Off topic but nevermind.

Does anyone know when clubs started paying agents?

As in, rather than the player giving a percentage of his fee? Because that is the point in my opinion where it has all gone totally wrong. It is absurd. Should the clubs buy the players food, cars, prostitutes, houses, laughing gas etc.? If they feel they need an agent then they pay for it!

    How is this allowed?!?

  • 41 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:26 PM

needs must mate….if a club wants a player bad enough they will do anything, pay for anything to get them here and make them happy, and it’ll probably be a contract breaker if they dont!lol

  • 42 Jib // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:26 PM

    No I didn’t
But as you brought it up
    A Shearer 63 games 30 goals
    P Crouch 42 games 22 goals
I await your next insightful post with bated breath.

  • 45 martoon // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:33 PM

gonufc @40 – We discussed this quite a bit on the previous topic when I posted

    martoon // Jul 12, 2016 at 10:26 AM
The thing I don’t understand about agents is as they are acting for the players then why do the club have to pay them? In any other business if you have an agent acting on your behalf then you have to pay them e.g. buying a house and solicitors etc. So surely the footballers should pay the agents from their signing on fee or percentage of wages NOT the club!

  • 46 SPRINGY // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:36 PM

martoon they should pay but dont…they can tell the club to pay for all them things as part of there contract unfortunately.

  • 47 martoon // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:37 PM

Jib @43 – I take it you don’t have to work for a living like most of us on here?

  • 48 Tsunki // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:41 PM

That’s a stat Jib. A worthless pointless meaningless stat.

  • 49 Bowjaw // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:50 PM

aye he had a decent record for England and was a decent premiership striker but personally I couldn’t wait to watch shearer in his twilight games. The thought of watching Crouchy playing for us next season excite me in the slightest

  • 50 firebug666 // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:53 PM

Rafa hasn’t put any price tag on Sissoko, all just press lies to sell a story.

Speaking from the club’s training camp in Ireland, Benitez told nufcTV: “People are talking about this price, this price – we don’t want to sell, so we haven’t put any price. We are happy with him.

It will take a hefty wad of cash to get him though.

  • 51 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:55 PM

All crouch would give us is “the Andy Caroll” option. 10 mins to go on a wet tuesday november evening away from home. Ball stopping where it lands. Score is 0-0 and lanky is sent on to try and nod in a few long high balls. Other than that i cant see a use.

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Jul 12, 2016 at 3:55 PM

Most of Crouch’s goals came against teams like Trinidad and Tobago, still a very enviable record on paper mind.

  • 53 Mister Tuff // Jul 12, 2016 at 4:02 PM

martoon – of course Jib works.
He is a lecturer in Modern European History and also a lecturer in psychology (as he has told us).
So preparing lectures will take some time as will marking students papers.
On top of that he will have to respond to his fan mail.
On top of that there is the annual smuggling run to the Costa del Crime.
