There was news last night that Newcastle would go in with a third bid for Blackburn Rovers center-back and captain Grant Hanley – and hopefully the Magpies can be third time lucky this time and get the bid accepted.
Newcastle have had bids of £3.5M and £4.5M rejected so far by the Lancashire club and yes – the Magpies will go back in with a bid £1M more than the last one at £5.5M, according to several reports yesterday.
Grant Hanley – keen to join Newcastle
And further news this morning that Grant seems to be rather keen to join Rafa’s revolution on Tyneside and he will now seek talks with manager Owen Coyle, after Rovers have flatly rejected the two bids from Benitez for his services.
Hanley is reported to be watching events rather closely and it seems a pity we couldn’t have signed him earlier this week and had him join the first team squad in County Kildare in Ireland.
But Blackburn Rovers want to hold out for as much money as they can for their highly-rated Scottish captain.
But that could also be dangerous with Rafa Benitez having other center-back targets already lined up that he could turn to and give up on Hanley.
And that’s probably what Grant is concerned about, with reports the 23 times capped Scottish International is keen to join Rafa on Tyneside.
We may even hear something on this potential deal today, with Newcastle keen to end the impasse and get Hanley on Tyneside.
Not only is the 24 year-old a very good player with massive Championship experience, but he also has great leaderships skills – something that’s been in short supply in the Newcastle squad over the last few years.
This is the first deal that seems to being held up as the other five deals seems to have gone fairly smoothly, as far as we can tell.
Newcastle have already signed Matz Sels, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie (a team-mate of Hanley’s on the Scotland side), Jesus Gamez and Isaac Hayden in the last two weeks for a gross amount of about £30M.
