Newcastle After Swedish Center-Back

12:34 pm, Thursday, July 14th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 11 Comments

In Italy, Gazzamercato are reporting that Newcastle United are interested in 23-year-old Serie A center-back Filip Helander from Italian club Hellas Verona.

The player stands 6ft 4ins tall and only signed for the Italian club last summer from Malmo, his home town club  and last season he played 26 times for Verona with a couple of goals.

Filip Helander

Filip Helander – 23 year-old Swedish U21 player

Helander had been at Malmo for four seasons and played 94 times with 3 goals for his home town Swedish club during that time.

He made his debut for Verona last September against Inter-Milan in a 1-0 defeat at the San Siro and then he started the next game against Lazio.

In the first half of that game Helander scored his first goal for the club, but Verona ended up losing 2-1 to the Rome club.

Championship rivals Norwich City are also said to be tracking the player who has played 19 times for the Swedish U21 side but has yet to make his full debut for his country.

Rafa Benitez is keen to sign a center-back at Newcastle after allowing club captain Fab Coloccini to leave for San Lorenzo last week and Newcastle are having difficulty agreeing a fee with Blackburn Rovers center-back Grant Hanley.

There were rumors last night that Rafa  may even have gioven up in his attempts to sign Hanley.

And today Rafa Benitez has said Newcastle are close to completing a number of signings, so maybe Filip Helander is one of them?

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    repost:
On the kits…I personally dont like the style of them (the collar on the away/3rd are awful). Puma should have used their euro’16 kits as a standard template of style, or something like this years Borussia’s or last years Rangers!!

If Real Madrid do want Sissoko, how about taking Martin Ødegaard off their hands, even if only for a season loan?

I hope we secure Hanley, he’d add some much needed experience, strength and leadership at the back. This guy could offer some competition too, dont know much about him!

Gini to Everton? Do they not have any good youngsters to nab?!

No idea about him but I am getting twitchy about the lack of centre-back options with the season looming…

In Sweden he’s rated as a prospect. That’s about it. He’s way behind in the pecking order for the Swedish national team. And we have a shocking defense now-a-days so… I would like to see a fellow Swede in Newcastle but this one im not sure of. We’ll have to wait and see.

Highly rated here in Sweden, was part of the U21 winning side of the U21-european championships last year. Yet to make an appearence in the senior national team but is sure to make a few in the future.

We seem to have a difference of opinion between our Swedish friends 🙂

He was the 3rd choice in Swedens U21. Alexander Milosevic and Joseph Baffo was #1 and #2, but as I said. He’s a prospect, could become a good/decent player for us in the future. However.. there is a difference between the U21’s and playing for Newcastle United in my opinion.

I wish Newcastle would just ask Blackburn, if they would possibly sell thier other center half Shane Duffy, in my view he is better than grant Hanley, although i would be also happy if we got Grant Hanley, but as its starting to drag on a bit, i think they should agree the six million that Blackburn are looking, or put an offer in for Shane Duffy. HWTL.

Verona’s new manager is Rafas old nufc assistant so if there’s genuine interest this should go smoothly

Not heard anything about this guy. Goals from the center half position and good height sounds promising though. Hopefully has enough pace.

Looks like Rafa wants a squad that is 3 deep in every position. He will sign those better than the opponents in this division with the hope they will grow if NUFC is promoted.
Could this be transfer window hot air? Sure. Let’s wait and see.

So it looks like we are turning out as Hull City and Tottenham Hotspurs to really put the frighteners on the rest of the Championship.

I wish someone would ask Rafa a serious question rather than this continuous fluff we are getting. It is just like every other season but at least there is a trusted manager in charge.

Will the team rigidly stick to playing 4231? Can he outline his thoughts on strikers and how they should interact with the team? Will he resign if the club is not in the top two at Christmas?

But no we get the same tired cliches about players being under contract, pulling together and training going well.
