Newcastle Linked With Venezuelan International Defender

1:21 pm, Thursday, July 14th, 2016 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 29 Comments

News today that Newcastle are considering a bid for 31 year-old Fulham center-back Fernando Amorebieta.

We have also been linked today with 23 year-old Swedish U21 center-back Filip Helander from Italian club Hellas Verona – so it seems that Rafa is busy trying to bolster the central defense at the club – maybe because he’s having trouble getting Grant Hanley in from Blackburn Rovers?

Fernando Amorebieta – 31 year-old Fulham defender

One of the advantages with Amorebieta, who is a Venezuelan International (15 caps), is his versatility and as well as playing in central defense he can also play at left-back.

He’s been at Fulham for three years since signing on from Athletic Bilbao back in 2013 – and he has made 48 appearances with 2 goals and 3 assists for the Craven Cottage club.

Amorebieta is tall at 6ft 3ins and it seems Rafa is looking for height at the back of the Newcastle defense.

The 31 year-old has had two loan spells at Middlesbrough – the first being from March of last year and then last season he was on loan at the Smoggies for the whole season.

In total he has made 21 appearances for Middlesbrough so he was not a regular starter for the north-east club.

Amorebieta made his senior debut for Venezuela back in September, 2011 in a friendly with Argentina, in a 1-0 defeat.

He was included in Venezuela’s squad for the 2015 Copa America last year and he managed to get himself sent off in the team’s 0–1 loss to Peru in the group stage and he has since decided to retire from international football – last November.

He seems a strange choice if Rafa is indeed interested in him, but Fernando did play in Spain until 2013 so perhaps Rafa is well aware of him because of that.

He has only one year left on his contract at Fulham so could be picked up for a modest transfer fee.

Comments welcome.

Lindisfarne – I do not think we are going to get too many clues from Benitez as to what type of players he is after/positions/numbers as it may tip the wink to others-effect prices.
I think he is going as far as he dare by saying other signings are in the pipeline.

Think it better getting players in before Sissoko is sold – everyone will jack their prices up.
Relatively exciting times – who is to be the new CB- is he going to get another striker.

Other clubs I think will be crapping themselves – as we aim to do the business this season and win the league -set the sights high.

See Shelvey has been working through the holis with a personal trainer and has shed 6 -7 kilos since last season. Looks like he is in the programme. Good stuff.

Does anyone knw how RAFA will set up?

I know he likes to play 4-2-3-1 like he did back end of last season where he played colback & tiote.. do you think he will play 2 defensive midfielders again?

also strikers, mitrovic being out for first 4 games is it going to be gayle up top on his own?

  • 4 kilcline // Jul 14, 2016 at 1:57 PM

I would go for the following centre backs:

    Denayer (city youngster)

If wini goes to Everyon I would ask for Galloway in return, he is a decent left back and can play centre back.

Benitez is obviously in for Hanley but still has,nt managed to agree a price. If we are just 1.5M short of the asking price, why dont we just pay it, after all, we will get 20 to 30m from Sissoko, and another 20m or more from Wini.
I know we are in the fizzy pop lge at the moment but we are supposed to be building for the future and the prem,,yet we are stalling over pocket money in transfer terms.

Previously Id agree but Rafa is running things now as far as I can tell so if he is holding out on an extra 1.5mill then there is a reason…maybe he wants the bulk of the Sissoko/Gini money to bring in a super star or two. Alternatively maybe he has no plans to sell Sissoko or Gini so is only making his plans on the budget he currently has

come on give Rafa a break we have signed 5 he has said today that more deals are in the pipeline 6 weeks to go not 6 hours
its only paper talk what blackburn are asking for we dont know the amount
cut him a bit of slack and let him do the deals so far we have not been disappointed

  • 8 MadisonToon // Jul 14, 2016 at 2:33 PM

Normally I’d agree about stumping up the extra cash and getting him through the door, but what would that show about Newcastle? We went in at 3.5, they said no, we want 6, we then went back at 4.5, they said no we want 6 and then we gave them 6, almost twice what we initially offered?

We won’t be getting any deals on players after that and teams will be greedily standing firm and asking for high offers on any player they know we are interested in as we’ve shown that we will pay it, regardless of how it lines up with our valuation.

We will get a useful CB sometime this window, of that I’m sure.

Wonder if Rafa will ever use the expression ‘Couldn’t get him across the line’?

  • 10 Pardews Priceless Bulls#*t // Jul 14, 2016 at 2:56 PM

What I would like to know is if rafa will be given the 35million andy carroll money?

  • 11 ToonMauritius // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:01 PM

    Hi friends.
I had not watch too much championship football, Can anybody tell me who is best the CB.. Hanley, Dunk, Maguire or Lee ?

  • 12 G // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:03 PM

@11, debatable mate, I would say Dunk looks the best, but others may disagree.

  • 13 SPRINGY // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:15 PM

i think this hanley on going bollicks will need the player to step in and say he wants to leave and put in a transfer if he really wants the move…or newcastle will move on, it seems like its getting near the end…one way or another.

  • 14 Spoof // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:28 PM

If we make it known that we are looking elsewhere for a CB it may force Blackburn into accepting our latest bid as they may not want an unsettled player on their hands, as others have already stated there are other CB’s so we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be held to ransom.

  • 15 lesh // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:28 PM

Surely Rafa fan make a sensible offer for Hanley otherwise we’ll be hit with another Delli Alle (spelling?) situation!

  • 16 SPRINGY // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:30 PM

that may be why today we have been linked with a couple more cb’s,just to light a fire under arses …before they bid one more time.

  • 17 lesh // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:35 PM

    Madison, WL

As is there appears to be a shortfall of £1.5m in the reported Hanley asking price.

    There’s a need for a face-saving offer to get him – maybe £4.75m plus add-ons?

  • 18 ToonRich // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:46 PM

TM, I know Lee had a very good season for the Owls – but that doesnt necessarily mean he’s good enough for us 😉
Hanley is strong and plenty of Championship experience, I’d stay clear of Maguire (hasnt progressed imo since leaving Sheff Utd). Dunk has alwyas looked decent when I’ve seen him.

  • 19 welshgeordie9 // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:47 PM

If Spurs and Liverpool are so desperate to get Gini and sissoko, how come they haven’t made a bid yet, it’s all talk, all you see at the moment is the word linked, it’s like us and Hanley, apart from him how many defenders have we been LINKED with today, until I see the words SKY SPORTS BREAKING NEWS on Sky Sports News then i think it’s pointless talking about it, the way they drag out transfers these days I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes on until deadline day.

  • 20 lordy_geordie // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:48 PM

Just ordered my Fulham tickets ??

  • 21 lordy_geordie // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:49 PM

That was supposed be kisses not ? Marks

  • 22 Munster Mag // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:50 PM

I dunno but names like this hardly fill me with excitement. Maybe rafa has one or two blockbusters up his sleeve but 31 yr olds frim fulham who were on loan at boro hardly set the pulse racing. I’d rather see more youth. Or perhaps talented older guys from spain etc like new boy Haysoos?

  • 23 welshgeordie9 // Jul 14, 2016 at 3:52 PM

If we don’t get Hanley because Newcastle won’t fork £1.5 million that little bit more then that’s like going back to the old days, and we’ll know how that turned out.

  • 24 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 14, 2016 at 4:15 PM

By all accounts Hanley is a decent player, but as far as giving in to Blackburns starting price I agree we shouldn’t do it. Somone else said earlier it would make other clubs hold out for higher prices that the players are not worth

  • 25 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 14, 2016 at 4:38 PM

    Blog death?

  • 26 Ron Knee // Jul 14, 2016 at 4:51 PM

    Slow news day.

  • 27 geordie157 // Jul 14, 2016 at 5:00 PM

We should turn our attention to Hanley’s fellow centre back Duffy. Think he’s a better player.

If Gini was to go to everton, I think as someone else mentioned getting Galloway or possibly Garbutt as part of the deal would be good business.

  • 28 Goromagpie // Jul 14, 2016 at 5:29 PM

We have very limited players playing in left wing
    Aarons,Goufran(who is useless),maybe wini ,….tats it

We should sign players in this position

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Jul 14, 2016 at 7:43 PM

    Toon Mauritius,
The only Championship football I watched was two minutes of Middlesbroughs highlights on Look North every Monday.
What’s Rafa playing at, he hasn’t got round to sorting out the box office staff yet, wants to pull his finger out.
